In the months before Julie and I moved to Milwaukee,
news of our imminent arrival began to spread. Theyre from
California, said some. I hear they are vegetarian, said oth-
ers. Both were at best half-truths. While we moved here
from California, only Julie actually grew up there; Iam from New Jersey. And while we had beenvegetarian in the several years prior to Michaeland Sophies birth, their gestational need for pro-
tein brought us back to meat with a vengeance. There was some disappointment among
the most environmentally committed in our com-munity, when they discovered they we were notideologically committed fellow travelers.
Then a funny thing happened: as ourchildren began to grow, we became more environ-
mentally conscious and committed. We recycle. Our kids participate in twice yearly river clean-upson the Milwaukee and Kinnickinnic Rivers. We use biodegrad-able soap. We drive a hybrid car.
We are not alone in this transformation. Over the pasttwo years, Congregation Sinai has become a green commu-
nity. We have a new multi stage boiler that uses less energy.Weve switched over to energy saving light bulbs throughout
the building. Weve cut down our use of paper by relying more
on electronic communications. We even buy less water in plas-
tic containers, and less paper plates, preferring to use reus-able utensils. We planted a garden last summer that yieldedbeautiful gourds, corn, and other ornaments for the Sukkah.
These efforts are more than a fad. At its core, Judaism
has always taught that we are to live in harmony with the landand with nature. The first chapter of Genesis is often trans-lated to say that God has given us dominion over the earth;the Jewish translation stresses that we are given the responsi-

bility to be good stewards over the land. A midrash depictsGod giving Adam and Eve a tour of the garden and saying, this is the last world I am going to make, so take good care
of it.Hopefully, the world community will find common
ground through efforts to curb greenhouse gasemissions that threaten to accelerate globalwarming. Closer to home, there is so much wecan do as a community and as individuals. I urgeyou to follow the progress of Sinais Greening
Committee under the leadership of Deb Scher-
mer and to join the committee if you are ready todevote time and effort.
The upcoming holiday of Tu BShevat is a
most propitious time to think about the environ-ment. Originally the first day of the fiscal year for
trees (back when the age of a tree would definewhen one could eat its fruit), Tu BShevat wasappropriated by the Kaballists Jewish mystics who saw acorrespondence between the natural world and the spiritualrealm.
Ive been participating in a multi-year programthrough the Institute for Jewish Spirituality along with thirty-seven other rabbis from the various movements. One practi-cal product of this journey has been the creation of a TuBShevat Seder. Modeled on the Tu BShevat seders pio-
neered by the Medieval mystics, Sinais Tu BShevat seder
includes music, introspective texts, and delicious food. Weare holding our third Tu BShevat Seder at 4:00 pm on Sat-
urday, January 30th, in the Worship and Learning Center.

The rabbis teach us mi shen-ichnas Adar, marbim bsimcha! WhenAdar enters, our happiness increases! The rabbis must have known there wasa place in the world like Milwaukee, WI.Who doesnt need a little extra happi-
ness in the midst of a cold winter? Ok,
okmaybe that wasnt ex-
actly their plan. The story of Purim
is a great one it includesall the necessary charac-ters to make for interestingreading (worth repeatingyear after year!). There is abeautiful queen, an evil
villain, a simple but heroicmember of the commu-
nityand there are, of
course, eunuchs a-plenty!The telling of this incredi-ble story is fun; shouting and noise-making, costumed silliness aboundingwho cannot say that every custom ofPurim is linked to incredible, almostoverwhelming joy and happiness? Andwhy shouldnt it be so?
The Shabbat before Purim isknown as Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath
of Remembrance. On this Shabbat weread the story of the Amelekites, thedescendants of Amelek, and foes of theJewish people. We are taught that Ha-man (boo and hiss here) is a descen-dant of these people. What ShabbatZachordoes for us as a people, in link-ing the story of Purim with the story of the Amelekites, is remind us that notonly once, or twice, or ten times for thatmatter, were the Jews the target of ha-tred and destruction in history. Perhaps the abundance of joy we are meant tofeel then, is a reminder of our freedom
and our continued peoplehood. As a people, we are obligated
to feel joy and also, to spread that hap-piness around. The tradition of mish-loach manot is just that a tradition of
Page 3January/February 2010
helping others to increase their happi-ness at this festive time. Under the lead-ership of member Mari Katz in 5770,Congregation Sinai is happy to sendmishloach manot to many of our congre-gants who might benefit from their happi-ness increasing this Purim. Each year,
as a congregation we delivermishloach manot to mem-bers who have lost family in the recent past, are feelingill or under the weather, arebusy with the everydaystresses of new babies andcan use some extra happi-ness in the winter months.
We fill festively decoratedbags with homemadehamentaschen, fruit andsweets and fun Purimmasks and surprises, with
the hope of, through a simple gesture, helping to fulfill the teaching of oursages, mishenichnas Adar, marbimbsimcha!
I sincerely hope youll consider
helping us spread the joy this Purim. Ifyou and your family are willing to deliverone bag, you can help make this mitzvah
a reality. Please let us know by emailingme at [email protected] email you back with all the details
about when to pick up your bag to deliverit to a member of our congregation dur-ing the week of Purim. Know someonewho you think can use this gift of joy?Dont hesitate to let us know. We are so
grateful to have congregants like youthat make holiday time so meaningful forone another.
Best wishes to you and yours for a ChagPurim Sameach a Happy Purim! Cant
wait to see you in costume around Sinaifor Purim!
Cantor Rebecca Robins
Cantors Notes
Increasing our Happiness at PurimAlthough we are quite re-
mote in our political ideologies, myfavorite columnist, who writes for theNew York Times, is David Brooks. He
is bright, well learned, and arguescogently. Sarah Palin, on the otherhand, despite her popularity with acertain segment of the population, isan individualwith little edu-cation andmodest intel-lectual prow-ess. One of
the reasonsour nation isin its present
economic dif-ficulty is thatit has been managed by individualswith limited understanding. Not eve-ryone agrees with the Presidents
political philosophy, but it is hard toargue that he is not well read andhighly intelligent. A professor at YaleLaw School reported that in all hisyears of teaching, he had never en-countered a student as bright as Ba-rak Obama.
The democratic notion thatVOX POPULI VOX DEI i.e. that the
voice of the people is the voice ofGod is not in accord with traditional
Jewish belief. The expression AMHAARETS, people of the land is not
a term of respect. By the first cen-tury, there was universal education in the Jewish community. The brightestand most learned went on to becomerabbis, and it was the rabbis, not thepopulace, that established rules for
the community. Different rabbis haddifferent political philosophies, but
the fact that all were intelligent and
learned enabled them to work outeffective compromise positions.
I would suggest that both theI.Q. results and the academic recordsof all political candidates be available
to the public prior to elections.

Reflections
Rabbis Bible StudyRabbi Brickman has held a class on reading the Bible on Wednesday mornings at 9:30since 1955. We began with the first chapter of Genesis and have just begun the Bookof Nehemiah. Newcomers are welcome to join the class at this time (or any time). A
reading knowledge of Hebrew is helpful but not essential.

Lifelong Jewish Learning
Judaisms Contributions to Civilization:How well are we teaching these contributions to ourselves?Dr. Sherry H. Blumberg, Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning
Join Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Dr. Blumberg as wewelcome Shabbat in story and song!
Minyan Katan is a family-friendlyworship experience for infants 2nd graders.
Our Religious and Hebrew School is embarking on aprocess of assessment that is based upon an outstandingassessment tool developed by both Jewish and Secular Stud-ies educators. The assessment is the beginning of a process to help our school grow in excellence as we plan for the fu- ture. As we begin this process I, the Rabbi and our profes-
sional staff, as well as our parentsand teachers will have to ask andanswer some very difficult ques-tions. Looking at ourselves is nevereasy, especially if we are honest,
but asking where we want to grow to is even more difficult. What dowe mean by excellence in our
school? What are the Jewish val-ues we want our students to knowand do at the end of their time withus? And, are we really teachingthese values in all the ways we can,
as a congregation, school and community?Upon reflection on these questions I recalled an
amazing experience from my past. In November of 1998 Iwas invited to speak at the International Symposium on Reli-gious Culture and Ethics which was held in Beijing, China.During that symposium I met persons from around the worldwho represented most of the major Religious traditions. Weeach met with our counterpart in China who studied our relig-ion at the University level and we gave and listened to aspeech from each of the participants. The Chinese were try-ing to understand how our religious tradition developed itsethical standards and how we lived them in our daily lives. Ina lecture, the task was very difficult, and very limited. Teach-ing Jewish ethical standards and Jewish practice for daily lifeand holidays is and has been my lifes work; defining what
3000 years of history has developed was very difficult in thehour of my presentation.
During that hour, I defined four major contributionsof Judaism to the world: a sense of purpose and hope that
the world and humans are perfectible; a body of literature
that explores and affirms values that lead to a reverent, justand compassionate life; a day of rest and reflection for allpeople regardless of their station in life; and an amazing abil-ity to adapt and change to the modern world within theframework of those values and ethics.
So, are we teaching our own children about thesecontributions of Judaism to the world? Does our educationalsystem help our students to know that there is always hopebecause the world and human beings are able to improveand perfect this world? Will our students be conversant withand knowledgeable about the great body of Jewish literature
(Torah, Talmud, Midrash, Responsa, Philosophy and Fiction) that affirms our values and challenges us to explore themmore deeply? Do we help our young people to cherish theday of rest (Shabbat) that Jews introduced to the world? Fi-nally, are our congregation and school allowing our learnersto struggle with Jewish values and ethics as we adapt to the21st century?
I will say that we try to accomplish all of these. I amconfident that we do numbers one and four fairly well, but wehave a way to go to accomplish two and three. Some thingsmay not be possible in the limited time that we have with thereligious school, and that is why at Sinai, Jewish learning islife long. When I consider our adult educational offerings, Iknow that we are making a stab at number two. When welook at all of our programming, we can understand how Shab-bat services, Torah study on Shabbat morning, and our Shab-bat dinners are ways in which we try to reinforce numberthree.
Join us as we begin to assess our school. What doyou want from our education here at Sinai? What is criticalfor us to teach in our limited time in order to insure the nextgeneration of Jews carries our tradition forward? What wouldyou have liked to learn that your didnt? What can you offer
to teach because of how you have lived your life? We needyour input, you are important to us and the process. If youwould like to be part of the discussions, call and talk to me.

The Immigration Debate: A Jewish Response
Congregation Sinai will host a Learning Shabbat session on February 19, 2010 at 6:15 PM. The program will feature a speaker from MIKLAT,
Rachel Ida Buff, as well as a representative of Voces de la Frontera, a non-profit organization that seeks to educate and improve the quality
of life of immigrant workers.
The goal will be to explore the historical parallels between the situations of contemporary immigrants and the history of the Jewish people. We will discuss the notion of a Jewish response to the contemporary immigration debate, keeping in mind the teachings of the Jewish tra-dition (i.e. You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.) Finally, we will hear about the New
Sanctuary Movement, a contemporary response to the immigration crisis in diverse religious communities.

Presidents Message
Synagogues are vibrant anddynamic, stimulating and renewing theJewish spirit. The reality is that syna-gogues have also experienced seriousissues with the current economic situa- tion. We were all fortunate to haveshared the High Holidays together, tocelebrate Sukkot and recently Chanu-kah; I know you share my overwhelmingsense that Sinai is a happy, healthy con-gregation on very sound footing. But aswe look to the future, we are faced withunprecedented challenges. We are notalone in this struggle; non-profits andJewish organizations globally are all
working to find a new financial structureto meet the needs of their communities. Our congregation is no different.
There are very special financial
challenges to running a synagogue ofour size. It costs over $2,500 per family to open our door to congregants. Weare trying to prioritize and face thosefinancial challenges ahead. The simplefact is that membership dues can nolonger fully cover our staffing and pro-gramming needs, as well as our build-ing. We need to explore other financialavenues.
We recently convened an ex-pert group of congregants, a Sinai Fi-
nancial Future think tank, to set goals
and problem solve some of these finan-cial challenges. This group is chaired byMadeleine Lubar and Marc Kartman. We are examining the various aspectsof securing the financial well-being ofSinai. It is always inspiring to know howmany wonderful families are committedand dedicated to our future. Those feel-ings are empowering for all of us.
We all know our congregationcontinues to rest on a firm foundation, but it is important that current informa-tion be readily available to all our con-
gregants. We will continue to keepyou posted on developments.
Our congregation has manywonderful opportunities for giving. Ourchildren need to understand tzedakahand you can set an example. Thankyou for all that you do. Thank you forsaying yes, for volunteering, for givingfinancially and emotionally to help ourcongregation to be everything we wantit to be.
My personal feelings are thatleadership can be a privilege, but itcan also mean sacrifices. It can meanpainful decision-making. I need eachof you. Your continued support andcommitment to our congregation en-sures a strong future together.

Sinai Outside: Night Hike
October 24th
was a dark and brisk night. Luckilyit was dry; the only break in rainstorms for days.Twenty seven brave adults and children with
Sinai Outside embarked on a sensational night -timeadventure at Riveredge Nature Center, no flashlightsnecessary! After congregating in the beautiful lodge wemoved outside for a spirited Havdalah service to endShabbat. Then we broke into two groups, adults, andfamilies, for a naturalist-guided hike to learn about localnocturnal life and to explore our own senses in the dark.Using our eyes, ears and senses of smell and taste we
tried to identify colors, aromas, flavors, two different owlcalls and constellations. It was more challenging than we
thought! We listened to a real babbling brook and weeven got to see the sparks we created by munching onpeppermint suckers! Walking together in groups feltreally safe, but we also walked by ourselves to feel howvulnerable a lone animal might feel crossing an openfield. At the fire pit we heard a Native American tale, anda true scary story while toasting marshmallows and ourchilled feet. It was a beautiful evening.
Many thanks to Naomi Cobb for helping connectSinai to Riveredge, and for her knowledge and expertisein leading the hike. And thanks to all our participantswho continue to support Sinai Outside.

Hello congregants! The Brotherhood will present
its third coffee of the season entitled"Finding Faith In A Troubled World". Adiverse group of Sinai congregants willshare their story of the various pathsthey have taken in their search for someform of spiritual connection. One of myfavorite poems "Stopping By The WoodOn A Snowy Evening", always left me
Winter has settled upon Milwaukee and much of ourgreenery is not so green right now. It is no accident that we
celebrate the birthday of the trees, Tu BShevat, in the deadof winter. Scholars believe that Tu BShevat was originally
an agricultural festival, marking the emergence of spring inIsrael, but here in the northern part of the US, we are perhapsoffered this holiday as an opportunity to celebrate our grati-tude and love for trees; a time to think about relating to thenatural world at a time when we are unable to benefit from itin a physical manner. The holiday is celebrated by planting trees, eating fruits (that are flown in from other parts of the
world), and participating in a Tu BShevat Seder.
And since it is SO cold outside, here is a suggestionfor an indoor activity that can scratch your environmentalitch. Check out the Green Furniture exhibit at the MilwaukeeArt Museum: Green Furniture Design focuses on the concept
of sustainable design, which centers not only around a re-sponsible use of materials and methods of manufacture, butalso on issues of object life span, energy usage, and recy-cling/disposal (www.mam.org). The Exhibition runs throughMarch 14, 2010.

Sukkah garden project next year? Join the Greening of SinaiCommittee by contacting Deb Schermer @

to hear your ideas, interests and musings.Tip of the month: Hot New Trend: the CLOTHESLINE.
Wait isnt that really old fashioned? Did you know that the
second biggest energy user in your household, after the re-frigerator, is the clothes dryer? You can save a bunch ofmoney on your energy bill and reduce your households car-
bon footprint by doing a very old fashioned thing hangyour laundry on a clothesline. More and more environmen- tally conscious folks are turning to this age-old method ofdrying their clothes. It just takes a moment to rig up a fewlines in the basement, and ten minutes to hang your clothesfresh out of the washing machine. Once dry, a quick tenminutes in the dryer to soften and fluff, and you will neverknow the difference except when you see your energy bill.

Introducing Sinai's Culture ConnectionGet connected with Milwaukee's arts and culture scene--and with fel-
low congregants--with Sinai's new group, the Culture Con-nection! SAVE THE DATE for our first event: Saturday, Janu-
ary 23rd, an evening at Milwaukee Rep to see Almost,Maine. The New York Times called this play a "whimsical
approach to the joys and perils ofromance."
On a cold, clear, winter night, the north-ern lights hover over the remote town of
Almost, Maine. All is not quite what itseems as the towns residents find
themselves falling in and out of love inhilariously unexpected, and often un-
usual ways. This enchanting midwinter nights dream
touches audiences with laughter, heartbreak and hope.Grab a date, grab a friend and join us for a fun night at the
Stiemke Theater! Tickets are $25--RSVP by January 8th:http://sinaicultureconnectionmaine.eventbrite.com Elyse Cohn

Help Us With Chesed!
Chesed means loving-kindness, a quality we try to exhibit in our per-sonal interactions. Sinai's Chesed committee needs your help as we reach outto members of our congregation. Purim is the time to send Mishloach Manot,
or gift baskets, containing nuts, hamantaschen, etc. In the past, we sent such
packages to our college students. In addition, we distribute Mishloach Manotto congregants who have experienced a loss during the past year, or who areelderly or disabled and unable to get out during the cold winter months.
This year, we need your help. We have created a Mishloach Manotfund. If you can support the costs of postage and supplies, we would be grate-ful! Further, if you would be interested in helping make and bake Haman- taschen, please let Karen Hintz know (shes in the Sinai office 414-352-2970). Details about when well be baking will be shared through the weekly
Sinai enews, which comes by email (if you arent currently getting the enews,
let us know and well add your email address to the list!).If you are a parent of a college age student, please let us know their
current address so we can send a package. Our update postcard got very littleresponse. Due to the cost, we can only send packages to college addresses
we know to be current. Please contact Jeri Danz at Sinai with the current ad-dress (414-352-2970).
