System Overview
Municipal Officials’ Meeting
New York State Electric & Gas serves 890,000 electric and 264,000 natural gas customers across
New York State
Brewster Region is 531 square miles and serves approximately 86,379 electric customers
The electrical system is comprised of; • 32 substations; 15 Transmission lines;
• 95 distribution circuits - 2,399 circuit miles,
(1,630 overhead miles, 769 underground miles)

NYSEG Reliability Targets
Municipal Officials’ Meeting
2017 Customer Average Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI) target
• CAIDI is the average outage duration that a customer would experience. • CAIDI is calculated by taking the sum of all customer interruption durations and dividing it
by the total number of customer interruptions. • Brewster Division had a goal of 2.25 and ended the year at 1.86
2017 System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) target
• SAIFI is the average number of sustained interruptions per consumer during the year. • SAIFI is calculated by taking the total number of customer interruptions and dividing it by
the total number of customers served. • Brewster Division had a goal of 1.70 and ended the year at 1.80

Major Contributing Causes - Motor Vehicle Accidents
Municipal Officials’ Meeting
A major contributing cause of outages in 2017 is Motor Vehicle Accidents (3rd Party)—23.1 % of all interruptions
www.nyseg.com 6 Municipal Officials’ Meeting
Trees are one of the leading causes of power interruptions and power quality issues. NYSEG routinely prunes and removes trees under and adjacent to
power lines for both safety and reliability.
Vegetation Management
www.nyseg.com 7
• Brewster Division is on a 5 year trim cycle, and trees remain a leading cause of outages
49.1% Trees - 38% Out ROW / 11% In ROW
• Continued focus on specification enforcement and individual customer outreach
• Develop new partnership strategies with the communities to strengthen the Right Tree Right Place philosophy

Why are trees the top cause of outages and interruptions if we’re on cycle?
One refusal has an impact on numerous customers and potentially causing impact to several towns at the same time Improper clearance leads to vegetative growth contact prior to the next scheduled maintenance year Overly mature tree population coupled with granite bedrock leads to more tree failure and uprooting Emerald Ash Borer is here and will continue to have a significant impact on safety and reliability in years to come.
Refusal to trim or cut trees affects customers impacted: 49.1% of outages are caused by trees
