Description This simulation study report investigates the structural integrity of an Edwardian Double-Hipped Roof design, an image of which is given above. The main design constraint is that the vertical deflection of the roof apex does not exceed 14mm. We are therefore primarily interested in the displacements and stresses under load of the JJI joists, which form the roof support joists. We consider the case for a snow loading of 0.8kN per metre squared and a roof loading of 920kg. We present any relevant calculations and simulation considerations, together with results and subsequent conclusions.

Simulation Setup
The following details are incorporated into the simulation setup:
Bonded contact sets are present where the JJI Joists meet each other at the apex of the roof.
No penetration contact sets are present where the JJI Joists meet the Eaves Beams, a necessary requirement for the
simulation of the screw connectors.
Where the JJI Joists meet the Eaves Beams, 2 M4 x 80 counterbore screw connectors are set either side of the JJI
joists.
Any contacts not mentioned above are set as bonded.
Fixed geometry is applied on the lower surface of each Eaves Beam, in order to simulate the roof
and joist supporting stru

ctures.
Gravity is applied in order to take into account the self-weight of the structure.
A total pressure of 4298 is applied in order to simulate the roof and snow loadings.Nm
With the considerations above, the JJI joists move in a roller/slider fashion under load, restricted
by the screw connectors and bonded contacts.

Conclusion We see from the table above that the maximum value of von Mises stress at the apex of the JJI 220 A+ joists falls well below the tensile and compressive strengths of the OSB/3 web, which are 7.2MPa and 12.9 MPa respectively. Also, the maximum displacements at the apex of the roof fall well below the allowable 14mm criterion for the design. Consequently, this design should easily be fit for purpose, at least within the confines of the findings of this report.
