I am pleased to be able to share Simpson University’s 2008-2009 Annual Report with you -- a report that draws attention to

God’s faithful provision. It contains several valuable components. First, we have listed key developments on campus within

the past year, particularly related to curriculum development, campus improvements, and service opportunities. All these

developments grow out of our new mission statement: As a Christ-centered learning community, Simpson University develops

students in mind, faith, and character to influence the world through leadership, scholarship, and service.

Second, we have included a list of individuals, churches, businesses and foundations that have contributed to the

educational ministry of Simpson University during the past fiscal year. I am grateful for the hundreds of people and groups

who have partnered with us.

Third, we are able to give you a financial report for 2008-2009. In spite of the economic recession, God continues to

meet our needs. We concluded the year with an operating surplus; however, we had a decrease in net assets, largely due to

recession-related investment losses. Fortunately, the investment income picture is starting to improve in 2009-2010 as the

stock market continues to recover.

I trust this report is helpful for you and will enable you to participate more fully in the educational ministry of Simpson

noted by the Academic Office, Business Services, Enrollment Management, Marketing & Development, and Student Development. We are so

grateful for your part in these blessings. Please continue to pray with us for God’s future provision for Simpson University.

During 2008-09, Simpson University:

• Appointed three new full-time faculty, in Psychology (Danielle Beck, Ph.D. candidate); Education (Dr. Paul Jones); and Outdoor Leadership (Paul Stonehouse, Ph.D. candidate).

• Started a Military Leadership (ROTC) minor, in cooperation with the U.S. Army and the University of California-Davis, with 13 student cadets in the entering group.

• Began a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership (MACL) degree program, in A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary, with the approval of our accrediting body.

• Opened a distance site for our Master of Arts in Education degree in South Korea, with 15 students enrolled in the first cohort.

• Earned a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary efforts in community service.

• Graduated our first Master of Divinity students in Tozer Seminary.

• Promoted Dr. Jean Kachiga to the rank of associate professor of history.

• Enjoyed record-high enrollments in both ASPIRE and Tozer Seminary.

• Inducted 22 undergraduate students into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, and eight students into Kappa Mu Epsilon, an honor society in Mathematics.

• Remodeled the university coffee shop and partnered with YAKS, a local coffee provider with four Redding-area locations, to provide service.

• Hosted more than 21,000 guests who have been on campus for events, tours, overnight stays, seminars, conferences, camps, church retreats, etc.

• Received approval from the California Board of Registered Nurses for our feasibility study for a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

With the help of the Student Development Office, Simpson students participated in local and global service opportunities that included the following:

•10 mission trips worldwide during school breaks.

• 7,000 hours of service to the Redding community through churches and other agencies.

• Reduced residence hall water usage by 24 percent and raised hundreds of dollars for Blood: Water Mission through a “Waste Not” competition.

• Participation by 175 volunteers in the 4th Annual Day of Service partnership with the city of Redding.

• Collection of more than a truckload of canned food for the Shasta Women’s Refuge.

Your generosity and support helped us celebrate many milestones during the 2008-09 school year. Here are a few of the accomplishments

noted by the Academic Office, Business Services, Enrollment Management, Marketing & Development, and Student Development. We are so

grateful for your part in these blessings. Please continue to pray with us for God’s future provision for Simpson University.

• Surpassed $550,000 in Conference Services revenue.

• Renovated the weight room and Mod 8 to add ROTC offices, classroom and computer lab. Installed an ROTC training area south of the outdoor basketball courts.

• Resurfaced the gym floor and constructed a patio around the fire pit for the student body. Created a new practice soccer field.

• Celebrated with Kori Oechsli, who received her Professional Human Resources Certification, and Merlin Weber, who received his Senior Professional Human Resources Certification.

• Initiated university logo design and new Web site design (simpsonu.edu).

• Secured $250,000 grant from The Fletcher Jones Foundation and $50,000 in additional grants for the Science and Nursing Building.

• Wrapped two Simpson buses with the Red Hawk and university logo design, making them “traveling billboards.”

• Increased number of new students in ASPIRE by four.

• Increased number of new students in Education by 25.

• Increased number of new students in A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary by 27. • Facilitated approval of a new Student Government constitution and senate structure.

• Launched a new residence life model of two resident assistants per floor and one lead RA per building.

• Strengthened our commuter student program by opening a commuter lounge in the Owen Center, starting a monthly commuter worship evening, and purchasing mini-laptops for commuters to check out.

• Introduced the “New Song Chapel,” in which students submit original worship songs to be presented in chapel at the end of the year.

• Recruited more than 45 students to be prayer leaders in their dorms.

• Launched a weekly student-led worship gathering called “The Lounge.”

• Hosted five local pastors, four local worship teams and three global missionaries in separate chapels.

• Started women’s softball, which finished one win away from NAIA nationals in its first season.

• Started a golf team, which finished third in the California Pacific Conference.

• Honored Val Rodriguez as Cal Pac softball Freshman of the Year.

• Recognized the following Cal Pac All-Conference First Team honorees: Danielle Crisosto, Brianna Melgard, Corinne Alexander, Stefanie Singh, Sylvia Parker, and Shelby Sweatt (volleyball); Mitch Card and Casey King (golf ); Courtney Opie and Dave Barnett (soccer); Katie Garringer, Lynette Garringer and Ezra Mutai (cross-country).

• Recognized the following Cal Pac All-Conference Second Team honorees: Candice Vallerga (softball); Stacy Viss and Nicole Eileen (volleyball); Heather Perez, Morgan DeFazio and Jordan England (women’s soccer); Matt Deacon and Michael Guzman (men’s soccer); Aundre Sheard (men’s basketball).

• Recognized the following Cal Pac Honorable Mention honorees: Mitchell Flinn (men’s soccer); Justin Sparks (men’s basketball); Liz Thomas and Sara Fairburn (women’s basketball).

• Inducted Troy Fast and Brian Jobson into the Red Hawks Athletic Hall of Fame.

• Launched the pre-engineering phase of a campus baseball field/stadium.
