From teamwork to building leadership skills, and setting goals and striving to reach them. Jill and the coaches are not just teaching cheer, but life skills.” J. I can hardly believe it’s time for another issue; the months are flying by! It seems like I was just celebrating having both of my sons home from school and it will soon be time for them to be back!

My oldest son turned 20 recently and I was surprised how much it af-fected me. Every now and again we are sent reminders of how quickly time is passing and this was one for me. Warrior Challenge. Check out the photos with the story and cross your fingers for me. I am trying to raise money for St. Jude’s Childrens hospital. I am blessed to have two healthy boys and I feel it is only right that I do my part to help children

who are facing life threatening illnesses.

In this issue we have plenty of ideas for making your summer better. From fashion accessories, to waterproof beauty products, to outdoor entertaining idea. We have a little something for ev-eryone. I’d like to make a special point of mentioning Sara So’s update, she is making us proud through her service and her email will touch a soft spot in every heart.

Simply Hers remains a labor of love and I am definitely encouraged by your support and ac-ceptance. I never tire of your compliments but hope you will also feel free to share your ideas on how we can improve. We have an active presence on Facebook so be sure you ‘like’ us to post your comments, be eligible for special drawings, and keep up on our latest activities. I’m excited about ideas we are working on for upcoming issues and projects to give back to our community. We strive to fill every issue with something for everybody and hope as you open this one, you will find that we have met that goal! Enjoy the “dog days” of summer and STAY COOL!

CAR CARETIPS THATSAVE GAS

By Rob Shewman

FILL uP wITH A LowER-oCTAnE GASoLInE. Buy the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money. That pricey premium fuel won’t boost your car’s fuel economy or performance in the least, so skip it.

TIGHTEn THAT GAS CAP Gas will evaporate from your car’s gas tank if it has an escape. Loose, missing or damaged gas caps cause 147 million gallons of gas to evaporate each year, according to the Car Care Council.

Go FoR THE SHAdE. The hot summer sun that makes the inside of your car feel like a sauna also zaps fuel from your gas tank.

uSE youR GARAGE FoR youR CAR. do you have a garage? Clear it out and make room for your car. Parking in your garage will help your car stay warm in winter and cool in summer.

PumP uP youR TIRES. don’t get caught driving on underinflated tires. underinflated tires wear down more quickly and they also lower your car’s gas mileage.

KEEP youR EnGInE In TunE. Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost gas mileage by about 4 percent. So be sure to give your car regular tune-ups.

REPLACE AIR FILTERS. when the engine air filter clogs with dirt, dust and bugs, it causes your engine to work harder and your car becomes less fuel-efficient.

uSE THE RIGHT oIL. you can improve your car’s gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. opt for motor oil with the words “energy conserving” on the API performance label. This oil contains friction-reducing additives.we recommend Valvoline.

don’T SKImP on mAInTEnAnCE. Be serious about auto care. your car’s performance depends on it. Always follow the manufacturer-recommended maintenance. The car is designed to run a certain way, if it is neglected it won’t be as efficient.

paragraph #4

uSE youR GARAGE FoR youR CAR.do you have a garage?

not “got a garage”

paragraph #8

at the end: reducing additives. we recmmend Valvoline.

Well 6 months down and 6 months to go on my fabulous journey of getting fit and changing my life style of eating. Tyson has added more challenging workouts and I think the more he makes me sweat and I complain the more he adds to it. I keep telling him that he is 20 years younger but he just won’t

listen. I will be ready for the Warrior dash in September and I won’t have to find some poor guy to help me over the wall. So far I have lost almost about 28 pounds and 30 inches. After 22 years of marriage

my husband took me shopping and bought me a whole lot of new clothes. Love feeling this good. ~Cyndi

Here we are- the lazy (I wish), hazy (sometimes), crazy (for sure) days of summer! Is it just me, or is there really no “slow” time of year anymore?? I remember when I was in the throes of a full time job and the mother of two young sons; I would fantasize that when I got to this point in my life, my house would always be clean (& organized, of course!). I would have all the time in the world for reading the pile of books I could never get to. I would prepare meals instead of standing & stuffing on the run. I would never have to look in the dryer for the piece of clothing I wanted to wear. Well, I’m sorry to break this to the young women out there who still have this dream, but it doesn’t work that way! I think life speeds up as you slow down, I’m not sure.

Speaking of that, in this issue you will meet a woman who, at 86 years young, has no intention of slowing down! We should all strive to have her attitude and energy. I think you will be amazed at the way Doris Bavin chooses to spend her “golden years!”

As we celebrate the 4th of July holiday, we are honored to bring you the story of a local Vietnam Vet-eran, Edd Moore. The candid account of his experiences, gives a face and name to the unsung heroes who gave more for our country than can be measured. We are truly the home of the brave!

Once again, I thank you for allowing Simply Hers into your home and hopefully, your heart. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

13Accessorize

ith heavy layers and bulky jackets safely

stowed away, it’s time for accessories to really

shine. When it’s too hot to wear much more than a tank top and shorts, the right belt or hand bag can do wonders for your look.

Jewelry is the most basic accessory. If you’re wearing neutral colors, you can work with almost any color of jewelry. Just don’t go overboard. If you chose your neck, load it with necklaces dainty and clunky alike, but wear the most understated ear-rings possible.

Head accessories; hats, headbands and hair ornaments. If you wear a hat it needs to go with your outfit! A straw hat adorned with silk flow-ers would be cute with a gingham sundress but not so much with a silky evening gown. Headbands an other hair pieces are very versatile and can be worn for decoration, to keep your hair back, or both.

Belts Whether they are yellow, brown or purple and orange striped, belts are a cute way of accessorizing yourself and have the added bonus of keeping your pants up!

Handbags are nifty things to hold your “must have” things. Big totes in metallic copper, silver and gold colors are very hip, as are patch-work and quilted bags.

And of course shoes! For summer every girl needs some cute sandals or flip-flops (there IS a differ-ence), to slip on for a quick trip to the store or a day at the beach. Don’t forget to have a few pairs of shoes in your closet for a special occasion. Some brands can be very costly, but if you’d wear them often, they’re worth it!

Ok ladies, now that you know the basics it is ...

On uS 12, three miles east of uS 127, sits a charming, historic, one-room schoolhouse that celebrates the Burtka family’s award-winning delights. Over the past 100 years, four generations of Burtka’s have taken pride in their European roots and crafted some of the finest wines. Come inside and ensconce yourself in the old-world allure. Step across the golden hardwood floor to the knotted pine bar where John and Denise Burtka and their two children, Johnny and Jessica, allow a glimpse into the past and share with you samples of their heritage.

Last Wednesday, I partook in a relaxing trip to Cherry Creek Winery. The beautiful sunny afternoon allowed a perfect opportunity to share in the free wine tasting and sampling of the many Michigan made goods. Cherry Creek’s specialty is sharing the Burtka family’s wine craft but offers much more in their family-friendly establishment. June 30th thru September 15th, under the spacious pergola, Live bands will be performing from 4:00pm-8:00pm. A schedule of upcoming events can be found online at http://www.cherrycreekwine.com/ or picked up in their tasting room.

While enjoying the entertainment, savor your favorite glass of wine as well as other food and beverage offerings. Coming soon, the Burtka family’s Bad Bear Beer will be on tap; brewed at the sister store, Sleeping Bear Winery/ Micro Brewery, located off of I-94. unable to stay for the entertainment? Stop in and indulge in the creamy homemade butter fudge, jellies and jams, cherry salsas, balsamic vinegar -made in Modena, Italy, cheeses, Spanish olive oil and other wine related novelties; including gift basket arrangements.

In July, the kitchen will be opening, offering sandwiches and appetizers. Take some time for yourself and “Walk the Creek,” a stroll through the vineyard and nature preserve then picnic alfresco, under the pergola, basking in the serene scape of the Irish Hills. After much thought, Cherry Creek has decided to adjust their hours; open 11:00am-8:00p Monday thru Saturday and Noon to

6:00pm on Sunday. They are open year round and offer multiple events throughout the year and through holidays.

As members of the Pioneer Wine Trail of Southeastern Michigan, Cherry Creek Winery takes great pride in offering only the finest fruits from Michigan vineyards. They are knowledgeable and skilled in the trade and offer much insight to experiencing the best glass of wine. Their wine list spans the Lynn Aleksandr Premium Selections, Serious Dry, Sophisticated Semi Dry, to Sweeter Fun Wines. The Lynn Aleksandr Premium Wines are elite blends that are the most difficult to produce due to the short Michigan growing season, offering an elegant palate experience. The Serious Dry Wines include smooth Rieslings and leggy Reds. The Sophisticated Semi Dry Wines are featured to more easily please palates; showcasing Bronze Medal, La Mia Famiglia and Double Gold, Summer Breeze. While the Sweeter Fun Wines offer a more dessert-esque quality. Whether your looking for a evening of relaxed entertainment, a family-friendly outing, planning an event of your own (wedding, shower, bachelorette party, etc) or looking for a nice bottle of wine to pair with dinner, Cherry Creek Winery has what you are looking for. Stop in and swirl your cares away.

Cancer of the ovary is a disease condition that can be very devastating when diagnosed in a patient. Yet all is not lost in these modern times.

The ovary is a small organ in the female individual. There are two ovaries found in every female and their physiologic functions are so powerful that it is just unbelievable. Each ovary hangs on a tube on each side of the uterus and very close to the uterus.

Inside the ovaries there are many tiny structures called follicles. Each month one such follicle begins to grow and mature. This tiny follicle is what produces ALL the female steroid hormones including Estrogen and Progesterone.

When the follicle matures it then ruptures to release the “egg” and this phenomenon is what is called ovulation.

Two weeks after the ovulation the woman then may menstruate unless of course, she became pregnant.

This cycle of maturation and ovulation goes on every month, in a very coordinated and controlled manner and silently in the female individual until she enters into menopause when it finally stops.

Unfortunately, this time in menopause when the ovary is supposed to be quiet and resting is when one may encounter the disease state of cancer of the ovary. Fortunately, the incidence rate is low.

The symptoms of the disease are not specific and this is why it presents as a challenge for doctors to diagnose. Some may present with bloating, indigestion or fullness which are all symptoms of everyday complaints.

It is therefore, not surprising that most cases are diagnosed very late. Many women inquire about blood tests available for diagnosing ovarian cancer, like those available for other tumor producing cancers. Here again the commonly available blood test, CA-125 is non-specific as many other disease states inside the body may also produce a positive result.

Annually there are about 23,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States and most occur after the age of 40 years with the peak incidence at 56 years.

Majority of ovarian tumors in menopause are benign but about 30% may be cancerous. Most cases are also sporadic in occurrence but there hereditary patterns in about 5-10% of the cases. The hereditary ovarian cancers tend to occur in the younger women.

Once diagnosed, the mainstay of treatment is surgery combined with some form of chemotherapy.

It is interesting to note that oral contraceptive (the pill) use is known to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by about 50%. In fact, it is the only documented method of Chemoprevention for ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer can be a frightening disease to face but with the medical advancements available today it is possible to detect much sooner hence making it more treatable. Please contact Dr. Bediako for a consultation today at 517-437-5390. He will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your health.

CAPA, Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness, is dedicated to serving Hillsdale County. Through educational programs, events, fundraisers, and other activities we are working hard to try to make a difference for children and families. We work hard to stay focused on our mission. Our vision that all children will live in families and communities that love, nurture and protect them can only become a reality with all of us making it a priority.

WHAT iS PHYSiCAl ABuSe?Physical abuse is the infliction of physical injury as a result of punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning, shaking, or otherwise harming a child. The parent or caretaker may not have intended to hurt the child, rather the injury may have resulted from over-discipline or physical punishment.

WHAT iS CHild negleCT? Child neglect is characterized by failure to provide for the child’s basic needs. Neglect can be physical, educational, or emotional.

• Physical neglect includes refusal of or delay in seeking health care, abandonment, expulsions from the home or refusal to allow a runaway to return home, and inadequate supervision.• educational neglect includes the allowance of chronic truancy, failure to enroll a child of mandatory school age in school, and failure to attend to a special educational need.• emotional neglect includes such actions as marked inattention to the child’s need for affection, refusal of or failure to provide needed psycho-logical care, spouse abuse in the child’s presence, and permission for drug or alcohol use by the child. (The assessment of child neglect requires consider-ation of cultural values and standards of care as well as recognition that the failure to provide the necessities of life may be related to poverty.)

WHAT iS THe WiTHHOlding OF MediCAllY indiCATed TreATMenT? Withholding of medically indicated treatment is: The failure to respond to the infant’s life threatening conditions by providing treatment (including appropriate nutrition, hydration, and medication) that in the treating physi-cian’s or physicians’ reasonable medical judgment, will be most likely to be effective in ameliorating or correcting all such conditions.

But, the term does not include the failure to provide treatment (other than appropriate nutrition, hydration, and medication) to an infant when, in the treating physician’s or physicians’ reasonable medical judgment:

The infant is chronically and irreversibly comatose The provision of such treatment would - Merely prolong dying

- Not be effective in treating or correcting all of the infant’s life-threatening conditions - Otherwise be futile in terms of the survival of the infant

The provision of such treatment would be virtually futile in terms of the survival of the infant and the treatment itself under such circumstances would be inhumane.

WHAT iS SexuAl ABuSe?Sexual abuse includes fondling a child’s genitals, intercourse, incest, rape, sodomy, exhibitionism, and commercial exploitation through prostitu-tion or the production of pornographic materials. Many experts believe that sexual abuse is the most under-reported form of child maltreatment because of the secrecy of “conspiracy of silence” that so often characterizes these cases.

SIMPLY HERS has been following a local young woman, Sara (Armstrong) So, a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. This is the first correspondence since she’s arrived and began to settle into her assignment in Afghanistan ~ June 18, 2012 Hello from the sunny beaches of Afghanistan! Okay, well maybe there aren’t any beaches, but there’s sun, and plenty of dust/sand! By the time you read this we will have been in this country for about two months. Just getting here was an adventure in itself! Almost 20 hours spent on airplanes just to get close to the country, and a week and a half in between leaving and getting to our final destination. But it was worth it and even as I write this we are all settled into the rhythm of life here. I can’t really tell you a whole lot about where we are, other than we are in the Western part of the country. I can tell you that of all the things I leaned and expected Afghanistan would be like, very few of them ended up being correct. The Afghan people themselves are incredibly kind and welcoming to me. Almost nobody treats me differently or strangely because I am a woman. Of course people are curious and we all tend to attract a crowd wherever we go! But people remain very understanding that I am an American woman and they are just curious about me. It can still be a little nerve racking though, people want to take a picture with you if they can or they just take a picture without even asking. Everywhere we go we are always drinking Chai with the Afghans. The people of Afghanistan are incredibly hospitable and nobody will invite you into their home or workplace without offering you Chai and setting up a small spread of finger foods, nuts, fresh fruits and candies. I’m always joking with them that they are kinder to me than most Americans are, it’s lucky that I like tea so much!

My family and friends continue to be incredibly supportive through everything. I receive many care packages. It’s a five hour round trip to

pick up our mail and other items so we only do it a couple times a month. Nonetheless getting a letter or package never fails to make our days a little better. It’s always nice to receive a favorite food from home or a hand drawn picture. Many people have also very kindly helped out by sending me candy, easily shared American items like our own tea, little stuffed animals and toys. The Hillsdale Community Health Center even sent a whole bunch of pencils. These gifts are wonderful and mean so much towards making our days better but also towards helping us accomplish our mission. We share these things with the children of Afghanistan, many who have never gotten a gift all their own before. There are schools to be found but they are very rudimentary and children must bring their own supplies. Every little bit goes a long way in helping us to show the Afghan people that we are their friends and want to help. I also share things like American tea, candy, etc. with the adults that I work with. They spend so much time teaching me about Afghanistan I wish I had more things about America that I could share with them.

One of the toughest things for me to get used to here has been the weather. It is always dry, always hot and since summer has started, always VERY windy. The second you walk outside the sun hits you (since there is almost never any cloud cover), the heat wraps itself around you like a blanket, and the wind wants to carry away anything not nailed down. Some people have commented that the pictures I’ve sent home look like the u.S. west. I’ve never been out west, but if it also has spiders the size of my hand like here, I think I’ll be staying in Michigan. We all miss home terribly, however, our mission here is going great and it feels good to finally be doing what we trained so hard and so long for. Well so long and Hoo’ah from all of us out here. Take the time to hug somebody you care about today....just because you can, for those of us who can’t! 1LT Sara (Armstrong) SoSpecial Projects Officer210th MP BN

TRAVELING SOLO“You are never too old to enjoy a new adventure!”

by Peggie BildnerSimply Hers Magazine

Doris Bavin is 86 years old, has been married for 65 years, retired from Hillsdale College after 21 years, has

three grown children, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, likes to knit and crochet. That is pretty much the end of any stereotypical connection you can make with her and a retired senior citizen! The list of just some of her activities- golf, volunteering weekends at Sauder Village (which includes knitting demonstrations and playing the mountain dulcimer), fishing and being involved in her church- would be considered an active lifestyle by most. But, Doris also spends a good part of the year driving her truck all over the united States and camping, her only companion being a yellow lab-mix dog named Bailey. With a sense of fearlessness and a spark of adventure still in her eye, Doris, who started out in 1981 with a station wagon, tent and yellow lab named Hannah, is now on her second camper, third vehicle, third dog and still going strong!

Maybe being born in the Smokey Mountain area of Tennessee, instilled in her the appreciation and beauty of being out in nature. For years, she and her husband traveled to see their son in Colorado and she often went back to Tennessee to visit family. But when she retired, she got down to some serious road trips! By 1989, she was ready to take it to the next level, and traded her tent for a camper and new pickup. By the time she was ready for a new truck in 2004, she estimates she had approximately 108,000 travel miles on her first one. Doris explains that her husband George prefers a different type of vacation, finding her preference of camping in remote areas rather boring. So although he has met her at a couple of her destinations, it is usually just she and her dog that spend several months a year traveling and camping. Admitting there are some who might find her free spirit and trusting nature to be naïve, Doris says she has never had anything happen to cause her to be fearful or mistrustful. She has never had any vehicle trouble or an accident. She doesn’t use a GPS, but does appreciate having a

cell phone now. Once when traveling in northern North Carolina, she wanted to go into the wilderness but was refused entry because they had flooding that spring and didn’t think a woman alone without a four wheel drive vehicle should risk it. Another time, visiting the Outer Banks at Cape Hatteras in No. Carolina in the fall, she took a ferry onto the island of Ocacoke. The wind blew so hard she couldn’t keep her tent up so she had to sleep in her station wagon. She has also slept right through a tornado. A testament to her fearlessness, she tells the story of visiting Big Bend in Texas, where she drove into “the Basin” down thru 7825 feet of mountains and back up the same way! That is also the area where she was told if she had a small child or dog, she should carry them if she walked the trails, because mountain lions came down to the area looking for water! When asked if her family worries about her, she says, “If they do, they don’t tell me.” She says she has never been one to try to run her adult children’s lives, and they give her the same respect.

Doris’ travels have taken her throughout the united States including New Mexico, California, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky and of course, Michigan. She prefers campgrounds where she can have a shady, remote spot that will accommodate her dog and give her peace and quiet. She doesn’t mind traveling solo, enjoying the early morning walks with her dog and keeping her own routine and itinerary. But she has met many nice people along the way, and keeps in touch with a few. Doris also seeks out campgrounds with reasonable fees and returns to those she finds accommodating.

You might expect that Doris will slow down or give up her camping at some point, but that isn’t her plan any time soon. To put it in her words, “I never think about age. If I feel like it, I go!” And with that, she is packing her camper to head off to Midland, Michigan where she will spend a few days at a big antique market. Proving once again, you’re never too old to enjoy a new adventure!

DORIS SHARES SOME OF HER FAVORITE THINGS:

The International Amistad Reservoir, where the Rio Grande River was dammed up to make a large lake between the US & Mexico, at Del Rio in the U.S.

The Corps of Engineers Camp Grounds, where the corps had made a dam on a river. These are in the West, very nice and cost is low.

Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The park is just a few miles from the town. And the town is very interesting; with hot tubs you can sit in, a big antique store, and hiking trails that go across the river and into the mountains.

By Manistee, Michigan, on Lake Michigan, there is a beach that is divided; to the right you are on the “people beach” and to the left, you are on the “dog beach.” Since there are not too many places on Michigan beaches where you can have your dog, Doris appreciated this!

Twenty-three miles south of Deming, NM (just 3 miles from the Mexican border) Doris found the Pancho Villa Campground. The town of Palomas had a huge, nice restaurant and lots of shopping.

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky and Carlsbad in New Mexico. You need a guide for Mammoth, but can go into Carlsbad alone if you want.

The warm weather has arrived and conscientious pet owners typically reevaluate how to care for their pets. As the seasons change, so may a pet’s needs, and different safety precautions might be necessary.

Warm weather seasons are many people’s favorite time of year. Pets, too, enjoy the benefits of the warm weather, including more opportunities to frolic outside. But the sunshine and hot weather that is synonymous with the summer season can prove treacherous to some pets.

Although the hot-weather months are sometimes called “the dog days of summer,” that doesn’t mean that your dog enjoys them.

Dogs, cats and small animals who are left inside a hot car, even if just for a few minutes, can be susceptible to heat-related illness and even death. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to the heat because they can only cool off by panting and through the sweat glands in the pads of their feet.

Animal cruelty laws apply to just about anyone who endangers their animal’s life through negligence. Failure to take weather conditions into consideration may be a criminal act, depending on where a pet owner lives.

To avoid heat-related injury to a companion animal, keep these tips in mind.

* Even on a day that seems mild, an enclosed car can reach deadly temperatures. A Stanford university study found that even when it was a mere 72 F outdoors, the interior temperature of a car reached 116 F within one hour. Research further indicated that cracking the windows of the car had little effect on lowering the internal temperature of the vehicle.

* It is important to provide pets with extra water, as they may be more thirsty when it is hot outdoors. If you will be spending a day away from home, leave one or two bowls of water available and put in a few ice cubes, which will help keep the water cooler.

* If your pet is outdoors, make sure he has plenty of access to shady areas in which to rest. A child’s wading pool can provide a respite from the heat as well.

* Avoid walks and daily exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Try to reschedule these for early morning or early evening when things generally cool down. Remember, pavement and sidewalks can be very hot and burn the delicate pads of the feet.

* Stay up-to-date with vaccinations, as biting insects, such as mosquitoes, ticks and flies, are more prevalent this time of year and can transmit diseases.

* Avoid toxic gardening products if you and your pet frequently spend time in the yard.

The warm-weather season is one in which people enjoy lounging outdoors and soaking up some sun. You can ensure your pets enjoy it, too, by taking precautions and other safety measures.

Beth and Dan Eller thought they wanted to retire. They planned to find a quiet little farm house close to friends and family and fill it with treasures they had been collecting over their years

together. Beth said good-bye to her career as a special education teacher after 33 years and Dan decided he was ready to do the same with his own company, Eller Plumbing.

They found the perfect place, loaded up the truck and moved to Reading, MI. Everything was going just as they planned but life, as we all know, has a way of interrupting the best laid plans.

Beth realized she loved searching for treasures to fill their farmhouse. So much so, once she started, she just didn’t want to stop. And so was born the Basswood Corners Mercantile. The Ellers found the name in the local history books when they discovered the community’s beginnings in 1840. Settlers first named what is now Reading as Basswood Corners after a group of Basswood trees that grew nearby.

Basswood brings together both history and heritage in a setting that envelops visitors in yesteryear ambiance. From the counter that was handmade by a local carpenter from an old photograph found on the premises, to the art and collectibles prominently displayed throughout the mercantile, Basswood offers a little something for everyone. When the Ellers took over the building they found the cabinetry and cubby holes added character so they left them for their visitors to enjoy.

Mounted on the walls are original works of art from around the united States. They have found one-of-a-kind pieces at estate sales throughout the country. The Ellers buy what they like and what they think will appeal to people here. Beth and Dan do admit they have a soft spot for art that comes from dabbling with paint and photography.

Among some of their featured items are reproductions of a 1931 Christmas book titled “The Christ Child”, along with some note cards made by the same author and illustrator. The Ellers enjoy researching the artists who’s works cross their paths. They also subscribe to monthly publications on antiques and art in their never-ending quest to improve their mercantile.

Basswood Corners Mercantile has a little something for everyone. From rare, hard to find antique pieces that make you catch your breath to simply penny candy that is always on hand for their youngest visitors. The next time you are in Reading, MI be sure to make a stop at the mercantile. Basswood Corners is located at 112 E. Michigan Street and is open 11am to 7pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Happy Hunting.

PLAN AHEADEat a low-fat breakfast and lunch to save up a few extra fat grams to spend at the party. However, do NOT arrive at the party overly hungry either! In fact, eating a small snack before you go is a good idea.

INCLuDE EXERCISE BEFORE YOu GOLet’s face it, parties generally mean a few more calories than you usually eat. Overindulge on a day you don’t exercise and your fat cells will grow all night long! To prevent this from happening, be sure to exercise before you go.

MINGLE AWAY FROM THE FOODStanding beside a big bowl of cashews or Spanish peanuts can really throw a monkey wrench into your weight-loss efforts. Think I’m kidding? Just try to stand or sit near an enticing bowl of nuts and NOT unconsciously eat a little handful here, another handful there. Although you swear it wasn’t much, it was an unconscious downing of 10 grams of fat per handful!

uSE A PLATEOne thing that puts on weight is eating more than you’re aware of. Anytime you nibble on things directly from the bowl, you can end up eating more than if you put all the food on a plate. Therefore, create a healthful boundary for yourself: Everything goes on a plate. Make it a small plate for even better results! P.S. There’s freedom within boundaries.

PuT FOODS TO THE “PINCH, SLIP AND SHINE” TESTOne way to scout out fat is to perform what I call the “pinch, slip and shine test.” The test is simple. If upon pinching the item, you see a lot of “slip and shine,” that tells you there is a lot of fat. The following are appetizers that will undoubtedly give you a positive slip and shine reading, therefore alerting you to limit them.• egg Rolls• Buttery crackers• potato chips• chicken wings• Meatballs• pigs-in-a-blanket• Anything wrapped in bacon

Remember, while fat is enemy number one, number two is too many carbohydrates. Smart selections and portion control are what you need for success.

HALVE IT AND YOu CAN HAVE IT!When faced with an assortment of yummy dips, gooey sweets, or irresistible fried treats, think, “Halve it and you can have it.” This strategy works anytime, anywhere and will keep you from feeling deprived while halving the calories you would normally eat.

AVOID DRINKING ALL YOuR CALORIES“But I hardly ate a thing! How did I gain weight?”

Think before you drink:• Wine (3 oz.): 85 calories• Beer, regular (12 oz.): 150 calories• Beer, light (12 oz.): 100 calories• cider (12 oz.): 180 calories• Fruit punch (12 oz.): 180 calories• piña colada (6 oz.): 325 calories

Opt for: Club soda or sparkling water to dilute punch or fruit juice; mineral water, low-calorie soda or diet tonic water. Or better yet, add a slice of lemon or lime to a refreshing glass of pure water!

KEEP YOuR FOCuS AWAY FROM THE FOODWhile good food is certainly an important part of an enjoyable party, be sure you keep it in perspective. Appreciate the other great things: Socializing, music, games and activities.

STOP EATING EARLYEven if you stay late, decide when you will quit eating and do just that: Quit eating. This strategy can do wonders to prevent that continuous “just because it’s there” munching, saving you hundreds of calories.

NO MATTER WHAT, STAY POSITIVEEven if you did overdo it at the party, keep things in perspective. You do not need to be “perfect” all the time, and one event does not make you an overweight person or give you high cholesterol. Say, “It’s no big deal,” and start your next day back on your healthy fitness regime.

S.O.S.Sort, Organize, and Simplify Your Life!

ORGANIZING KID CHAOS!As the schools dismissed for the summer, and the teachers gave a collective “sighhh….” it was quickly followed by a collective “EEK….” by mothers everywhere! Let’s face it- where there are kids, clutter reigns, and having them home all day can throw your house into royal chaos!

Here are some SOS tips for getting the clutter and chaos under control:

SET THEM uP FOR SuCCESS! Put storage and organizing tools in place that make it easier for kids to cooperate and participate in the day-to-day cleanup.

• look for beds that come with storage options like drawers and shelves. Toys and art supplies can be tucked underneath the bed, and books can be at arm’s reach for sleepy time reading.

• Make a sports storage zone- an old wooden barrel, given a good coat of paint, provides storage for items from pool toys to sports balls.

• put clothes on open shelves and in color-coded bins (i.e. red for socks, blue for pajamas.) It will be easier for kids to dress themselves and <fingers crossed> put their laundry away.

• clear, stackable plastic drawers are perfect for storing Little People and Lego pieces. Kids are more likely to stay organized and actually play with toys when they can see inside the containers. Pull drawers out of the base for play time, then slide them back in at cleanup.

• put supplies on display. use a wall-mounted, magnetic strip (commonly used as a kitchen knife strip) as a supply station. Place markers, pencils and crayons in small, metal containers (or glue magnetic strips to the original boxes), and stick them to the strip.

• Try a little bribery! Give the kids a few good-sized shoe boxes and tell them to put all the toys they don’t want into the boxes. Offer to put $10 a box into their savings accounts!

• place a laundry basket on the closet floor to contain footwear. An errant shoe is a lot less likely to walk off if corralled.

• Sort toys with your kids on a regular basis. it always helps to schedule a purge right before a birthday or the holidays when they are looking forward to some new toys.

BE CREATIVE! Pare down keepsakes, clothes and toys to a realistic and manageable amount. Then use fun and unique ways to store and display them.

• exhibit the latest work from your budding artist with a casual display made of a clothes drying rack attached to the wall. use clothes pins or binder clips to show off art projects.

• instead of cramming stuffed animals into a bottomless bin, create a display and take advantage of wall space. Sew pieces of wooly Velcro to the back or side of each toy, and then apply strips of Velcro adhesive to the wall. Keep in mind the child’s reach. They can even re-arrange them to tell a story.

• incorporate a few high shelves into a child’s room for showcasing treasured or breakable items that shouldn’t be handled without supervision.

• look for fun storage. Vintage children’s suitcases found at garage sales can be packed with off season or to-grow-into clothing.

• show off art without nail holes. Create a gallery with colorful, wall-safe painter’s tape made into frames. The tape/frames will peel right off to change the exhibit at any time.

• invest in stylish boxes, a different color for each child, for piles of papers and assorted pipe-cleaner creations. Buy several in case the color is discontinued. If you stick with shallow boxes, it will help keep you honest about how much you can save!

• For children’s art or creative writings you love but can’t save, scan into the computer and make a book. You can condense a whole year of art into one slim keepsake.

• Make a habit of sorting through clothes three times a year- early spring, back to school and after the holidays. If there is a sentimental dress or onesie you can’t bear to part with, pin it into a shadow box as art.

• Attach a shoe bag with compartments (use one with clear vinyl pockets to easily view the contents) to the back of the door, or inside the closet. use it to store toys like small dolls, stuffed animals and cars.

• An inexpensive, colorful, plastic garbage container can also be used to hold toys. Let your child decorate it with his or her own graffiti and stickers.

I hope you will find these ideas for storing and organizing your kid clutter helpful. But remember-the first step is to free your family from too much stuff! By helping your children let go of items like toys, clothing and art work, you are teaching them boundaries (i.e. they can only have as many books as there is bookshelf space), and sending the message that having time and energy for enjoying each other, is more important than a bunch of stuff!

Growing up in a family of 15 children in a mining town in Kentucky, Edd Moore’s life certainly wasn’t easy. He was born in 1944 and, as was common in that time and place, left school at age 16. His father was a coal miner and farmer; Edd refers to their family as “dirt poor.” His first job was working for a paper wood mill where he loaded train box cars for $5 per car. When he was given a low classification after his Army physical at age 19, he thought he was likely to be passed up for the military draft. When he was 21, he moved to Michigan and got a job in the oil fields. In July of 1966, he married his girlfriend Susie. By January of 1967 they were settling into married life and were expecting their first baby, when Edd learned he was being drafted to serve in the U.S. Army. The Vietnam War was in full swing, surrounded by controversy as no other conflict had ever been. As many of his peers refused to serve, going so far as to leave the country to avoid the draft, Edd reported as required. Of course Susie didn’t want him to go, especially with a baby on the way, and tells that even her father had strong feelings, advising him to refuse to report. But Edd says deserting or running was not an option for him, simply stating,”I had to, I just had to.”

LET uSNEVER FORGET

THE SACRIFICES

In basic training, Edd learned 90% of their group would be sent to Vietnam so he knew early on that would probably be his destiny. He got a break when he was assigned to take his AIT (Advanced Infantry Training) in Hawaii. Even though Susie was eight months pregnant, she joined him so they were able to be together for the birth of their son, Alan. In December of 1967, 120 men were put on a boat where they would spend the next 16 days, headed to their assignment in South Vietnam. He says it was 16 straight days of KP duty and salt water showers! upon landing, they were taken by truck to a base camp where every few days they would be flown out and dropped off in the middle of conflict areas. Edd remembers the weather being miserable- very hot, constant rain- traipsing through rice paddies, sea rations that were inedible and hot meals being served only every five to eight days. He was assigned to carry the radio for a Second Lieutenant, the Platoon Leader of Company A. As part of Edd’s duties, he would often have to call for a Red Cross helicopter to carry out dead or injured comrades. In addition to the severe weather and living conditions, Edd says there was much confusion and misunderstanding about the war in general. He felt he had a good grasp of what they were trying to do, but many didn’t understand why our military was there. Even the South Vietnamese they were trying to help didn’t always welcome their presence.

At daylight on March 16, 1968, Edd’s company was one of three groups totaling 300 that were dropped into the large village of My Lai. Because of the terrain and unusual way the North Vietnamese attacked, it was common practice for the American troops to “round up” everyone in the village and put them in one place so they could be watched and accounted for.* They would then spread out in a long line and begin advancing into an area, prepared to go

to combat with any opposing forces they would encounter. On this morning as usual, Edd was with the Second Lieutenant, and in charge of the radio activity. They were just getting ready to eat some sea rations, when they heard an explosion. Edd was the third person to arrive at the scene, quickly calling for a medical helicopter. When it arrived, he volunteered to carry one of his friends, Douglas Cook, to be evacuated. As Edd was returning to where he had laid his radio, he stepped on a booby trap. The explosion blew him about ten feet, where he landed on his face. At first he thought he had just hurt his knee, but then realized the explosion had ripped off the bottom part of his leg. By 9:00 a.m. that same morning, Edd Moore was on a Red Cross helicopter with six other men. Even though the medic in the field had tied a tourniquet around the top of his leg, he recalls there being “lots and lots of blood.” He was flown to a big, floating hospital in an ocean (he’s not even sure exactly where he was), then later taken to a uS Military hospital in Japan where he had surgery to cut away the damaged area of his lower leg. He eventually ended up at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. While Edd was at the first hospital, he learned that his friend Doug had not survived.

In the meantime, Susie Moore was living in Jonesville with her parents and taking care of their son. She clearly remembers that day the taxi came to their house with a telegram. At first she didn’t want to take it. Her thought was that Edd may have been killed so she reasoned that if she didn’t read it, it wouldn’t be true. When she did, it told her only that he had been injured. They didn’t give her details or explain the severity of the injury, only saying he would be brought back to the states and she would get another telegram at that time. When he arrived in Washington, Edd called Susie and in two days she surprised him by walking into the hospital. Edd would spend the next six months in the hospital, receiving physical therapy twice a day, being fitted for a prosthesis and recovering- mentally as well as physically. Susie was able to stay in a visitors cottage on the grounds. In the years since, Edd has had eight different artificial legs. He has no feeling from the knee down and his leg is gone from just above his ankle. He has had to have his opposite knee replaced, a residual effect of his unsteady gate. He has never let it restrict him, saying the only two things he can’t do are run and stand to take a shower. In addition to his physical scars, he suffers from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder.) Although Edd admits that when he returned home, he often found himself depressed and spending a lot of time thinking about his experiences, he was determined to not let the physical or mental injuries keep him from taking care of his family. Although he is technically considered 100% disabled by the Army, less than a month after being discharged, he went looking for work and was hired at Vaco Products (later called Klein Tools) where he was employed until they closed. He didn’t ask for

special treatment. In fact, he assured them if he was hired that he would not let his leg keep him from anything they would ask of him; he kept his word, being a dedicated employee for 38 years. Susie and Edd went on to have two more children, daughters Amanda and Amy. Edd speaks highly of the Veteran’s Administration and the medical facilities, saying they have always provided him with good care. Now that he is no longer employed, he receives a full disability pension.

Because of the controversy and opposition to our involvement in Vietnam, many Vietnam vets were disrespected upon returning. Edd says he never experienced that. But when he made the decision to obey the draft order to serve his country, he was a young, naïve, country boy. His son Alan was a newborn when he shipped out to Vietnam and was a one year old toddler when he returned. In less than two years, he experienced more fear, sadness, trauma, loss and pain, than many do in a lifetime. When asked if he was forced to kill while serving, he drops his head and quietly responds, “I don’t like to talk about it.” And people who know him, even those closest to him, will tell you, he doesn’t. But that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten. As our time together came to an end, Edd pulled out a small wooden box of treasures. Inside were several medals, including a Purple Heart (a military decoration awarded to those wounded or killed while serving with the uS military.) And among some faded pictures, there was a special one of his friend, Douglas Cook…..a reminder of another one of the many things Edd Moore lost that morning in Vietnam.

As we celebrate our freedom on this July 4th, my prayer is that Edd’s story will help us remember that freedom isn’t free. Let us never forget the price paid by our service men and women, and the sacrifices made by their families. May God bless America.

Postcript:*Edd would later learn that after he was evacuated out that morning, Lt. William Calley ordered the killing of all the civilians they had brought together. Reported death totals vary from 347 to over 500. There was an attempted cover-up and Calley was later court martialed. For further information, research the ‘My Lai Massacre.’

Did you know when you’re feeling weak, you can be so strong? I am learning this one big concept in my latest three events of public speaking ministry. First, as I am sharing at a ladies luncheon, I am prompted go off my planned message to reveal the raw reality of how draining, demanding, and difficult life can be raising a special-needs child. I love my daughter to the moon and back, but at times I feel inadequate as a parent. This is not in my notes, but I feel compelled to just get real about my parental challenges. As I am speaking, my eyes meet with a teary-eyed woman in the audience who obviously relates to the struggles. I explain I can not do this earthly life without the heavenly power of God. Jesus did NOT say life would be easy breezy. Storms will come, yet Christ is the anchor to hold us secure. After my talk is over, this watery-eyed woman in the audience comes up to tell me she too has a child with the same issues as mine. She could totally relate to my journey, and today she put her faith in Jesus Christ! Her new-found faith and strength are start-ing instantly to give her encouragement for the long uphill climb.

The next speaking/concert event, I am again prompted to go a different direction from my notes. I am talking on the subject of how life can be hard, but God gives us the courage to carry on. At the front of the room, a fidgeting woman appears overtly uncomfortable. As I am sharing how Jesus loves each person in the room and desires a close relationship, the restless woman stands up and walks out right in front of me. Awkward. As I continue to speak to the group, my mind silently prays for whatever is hap-pening in her heart. Is she just late to be somewhere? Is she wrestling with the concept Jesus loves her and longs for a relationship? What just happened here, and can I stay focused as I speak?

The next day I am speaking at a mother/daughter dinner, and I forget to bring my notes. I know the message pretty well, but this could get ugly. I am feeling a bit out-of-sorts without the reliance of the notes incase I draw a blank. Before I start, I pray a brief prayer for wisdom to speak what God has planned. What an encouragement this no-notes night turns out to be. The audience and I are as one

on the same page. The ladies are mostly Believ-ers is Jesus, so I encourage them to take their pain and make it a pearl for God by helping others with similar problems. I emphatically cheer them on to take the messes in their lives and make them into ministry. I say take their junk and make it a jewel for Jesus.

Three very different days in ministry wrap around my human failings and struggles. I share my weak-ness and exhaustion in the first, and the life of one divinely appointed audience member chooses to follow Christ for strength in her strenuous journey. In the second, I struggle to stay focused on the mes-sage, as a woman walks away when I come to clearly share the life-changing power of God for their lives. Some may not think this is a successful speaking op-portunity, but if a spiritual seed is planted and later on it blooms in her heart, then this disconcerting moment may grow into peaceful life in Christ. And in the third event, I absolutely had to trust every word to be God’s victorious plan, because I was a failure at preparedness with absolutely no notes. God gets the glory for making the night a glorious blessing!

Have you ever, like me, felt fragile and feeble in fol-lowing Jesus? Parenting life far from perfect, people walking away when you speak, absentmindedly for-getting important things…these failing times can be winning moments with God. The Bible strengthens our sometimes weary way in these inspiring words found in 2 Corinthians 12: 9b-10 NIV, “…My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecu-tions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

At times do you feel feeble, frail, or even a total failure? When you find yourself lacking, look to the LORD, learn by heart inspirational verses, and lean on our Almighty God. His power is perfect when our strength is gone. For when you are weak, then you are strong.

ENTERTAININGSuMMERTIPS FOR OuTDOOR

Ahhh Summer. The feel of freedom is here at last. Finally we can kick off the shoes, prop up our feet and let the soft summer breeze remind us of how lucky we are to live in Michigan. Nowhere else can one find the pure joy of sitting outside and embracing the warm sun in quite the same way. There is just something magical about summer in Michigan. Perhaps it is the long winter months that we had to endure the gray skies and whipping wind. Perhaps it is the plants that have finally grown lush from the weeks of drenching rain that we made it through in the spring. Whatever it is, being outdoors this time of year is incrediblly satisfying.

With all that being said, we also LOVE to be comfortable and surrounded by special touches that make the outside feel more “homey.” So here is a collection of fun decorating ideas that add style and pinach to any outdoor setting.

CREATE A FESTIVE MOODCreate ambience with themed decorations. Let’s face it, red, white and blue will never go out of style. Especially during the dog days of summer. You don’t have to go overboard to show your American patriotism. A well placed flag garland coupled with some quaint hanging lanterns will instantly transform any outdoor space into a spirit lifting oasis. Or, bring the seashore to your backyard by filling colorful buckets with sand and sunflowers.

INSIDE OuTWho said that outdoor furniture could only be made of wicker or teak? Bringing a few of your indoor pieces outside is a great unexpected touch to make your yard feel cozy and enjoyable. Create cozy sitting areas to encourage your guests to sit and relax. A few stragically placed throw pillows will add color and comfort.

TABLE TALKSetting a table outside can be a challenge, make wind less of an issue by skipping a tablecloth. Small bowls of fresh fruit can weight dishes and greet guests. You may also use theme appropriate citronella can-dles, they will add a splash of color while keeping visiting pests from pestering your visitors. Set up tables in separate areas say, drinks in one spot, dessert in another to encourage guests to roam.

RING OF FIREAll the crackle of a campfire without the need to rough it. Set up a fire pit on grass or a stone patio. There is something magical about sitting around a dancing fire and enjoying the fresh evening air. Go a step further and surprise your guests with a cart loaded with a S’mores buffet and let them get involved in the action by creating an end of the evening treat.

Michigan summer is in full swing and outdoor entertaining is a per-fect way to spend an evening with friends and family. So throw down some pillows, light some candles and eat a S’more for me.

With a passion for creativity, hard work, and use of natural materials, the owner and operator of Frontier Earthscape, Kevin Kirkingburg,

has quite a portfolio of beautiful projects he’s completed over the last few years. Specializing in rock walls, seawalls, pathways, staircases, flagstone paths and patios, fire pits and water features, Frontier Earthscape has a reputation for creatively blending nature and function to please each customer’s sense of design, while still being mindful of their budget.

Focusing on being different than other landscapers, this is how Kevin describes his business- “We are earthscapers, specializing in the use of native, natural materials. We limit the use of heavy equipment and power tools, combining artistic vision with good, old fashioned physical labor. We are a small company and plan to remain that way, making each project custom and unique. I enjoy working with a customer who has a vision or idea, and then making it come to life.”

Part of what makes Frontier Earthscape unique is the way Kevin hand-picks the material and uses creative planning to make each project special. Customers are amazed at his work ethic and often comment on his long hours and focused determination to take the job from design plan to completion. Knowing his work will last for many years, he takes pride in the fact that it will be enjoyed by future generations.

Frontier Earthscape is now booking for late summer and early fall projects in Hillsdale and Branch counties in Michigan, Steuben and DeKalb counties in Indiana. Check out some of their awesome work by going to the website at www.FrontierEarthscape.com, where you will find a contact link. Don’t assume custom plans and personalized attention to detail will cost you more. Talk to Frontier Earthscape today and let them make your vision come together with nature…..one rock at a time!

Here’s what customers of Frontier Earthscape are saying ~“Kevin is a craftsman who carefully creates beautiful outdoor spaces. He turned a grill area into an outdoor living area which is now a showpiece. He’s very focused on ensuring that his creations will blend into the surrounding areas, complementing adjacent areas. He’s a true professional who is great to work with.”~ Peter Ronan, Farmington Hills (lake properties in Reading, MI)

“We hired Kevin to install a winding flagstone path leading from our drive out to a small cottage in our woods. The completed project is even better than we had imagined or pictured. Kevin’s expertise made the entire process a smooth one: he listened to our idea, drew on paper our thoughts, presented us with options for the material to use for the entrance steps, and created a charming path! He even seeded it, and planted lemon thyme in one section. When he returned to check on the grass growth, he even pulled weeds (yes, for free!). We are very happy with Kevin’s work, his communication skills, and his follow through. He was here when he said he would be here, and that means a lot. We plan to ask Kevin back in the future, and recommend him without hesitation for any landscape project!”

I’d like to host a cook-out this summer but I need a few things first; some new grilling recipes, cooking utensils, a stand mixer - so I can bake my famous cupcakes. Oh ... and maybe a new patio set, too!

You probably didn’t know that with a quick drive over to H J Gelzer & Son Furniture all of this is available along with a whole lot more!

Located in downtown Hillsdale, Michigan; it’s fourth generation proprietors, Grant and Catherine Baker are available to help meet your needs, be it something used everyday or one of those specialty home needs.

Upon entering the well-kept building on North Howell Street, I am met with a multitude of various small kitchen appliances, kitchen gadgets, cookbooks, and gourmet products. I thought finding my new stand mixer would be a snap but with the great selection it actually took some thining for me to decide on the perfect one.

On the second floor I discover more treasured offerings from bath beads and candles to fine glassware and novelty housewares. I’m impressed with the expanse in selection and how well everything coincides with the conventional idea of a furniture store; this is not what I had expected.

Throughout the store I found an array of pictures, lamps, and furniture collections spanning from modern and sleek to country chic.

Just when I thought I had browsed through it all Grant told me to be sure not to overlook the third floor; where I found additional furniture groupings, that Inmay have otherwise missed.

The attending associates are polite and knowledgeable and offer a certain relaxed

quality that I appreciate in my shopping experience. If by chance you are unable to locate what you are looking for, be sure to ask an associate if they can place a special order to help fulfill what you seek.

Often times when one thinks of a “furniture store” one thinks “expense,” but that isn’t the case here. I was pleasantly surprised to find Grant and Catherine have broken down that wall of misconception; even being competitively priced with many large chain stores.

It’s easy to see that they offer many USA made goods throughout the three floors of home furnishings. They believe that it’s important that their ‘family provides a quality service to people to accommodate the community.’

Their 90 years of experience, is accredited to their personable service and the ‘good people who work with them.’ It’s through this strong foundation that Gelzer’s Furniture Store is able to provide an in house budget financing program and layaway service, a bridal registry, gift wrapping service, as well as a “Saving’s Club,.” Plus, they offer free delivery within the county limits.

Stop in and see Grant and Catherine and any one of the friendly staff at Gelzer’s Furniture; perhaps, I’ll see you there.

CHUCK NEWTONINSURANCE AGENCY

There are some beautiful summer days in Michigan that inspire me to throw away that “responsible adult” badge and go outside to enjoy it like we did when we were kids on summer break. These are the days when a gently blow-ing breeze caresses makes 80+ degrees comfortable. The sky is that clear blue of summer days at the beach, the blue that “sky blue” crayons are named after. An occasional puff of fluffy, white cloud passes overhead. These are the summer days in Michigan when I would like to forget about all the adult responsibili-ties that keep me indoors. Forget dirty laundry that needs to be sorted. Forget about sitting in front of the computer to write. Turn off the air-conditioner, open the windows and head outside to play! When summer weather is this perfect, forget about being an adult for a while. Get outside. Lay in the cool grass to watch a line of ants busily carry sand out of their tunnels. Dip your toes in the nearest body of water. Contemplate the movement of the shadows under your favorite shade-tree. Sit in a lounge chair and sip sweet iced-tea while watching butterflies sip nectar from the flowers in your garden. Take a walk around your backyard or around the

block. Sit in the park and listen to see how many different bird songs you hear. If you just can’t bring yourself to leave behind all responsibility for one day there are plenty of things you can do outdoors that will let you enjoy the relief from the oppressive heat of previ-ous days without too much guilt about not accomplishing something. Go on a search-and-pull mission for weeds that are poking their sneaky little heads up in your flower beds and vegetable garden. Mow the lawn. Dead head the flowers in the potted plants that live on the front porch. Wash the lawn furni-ture. Clean out all the cubby-holes on your boat. Take the kids or grandkids fishing for their dinner. Hang the wash out on the clothesline. Do some door-to-door campaigning for your favorite political candidate. If there is absolutely no way you can get outside for anything else, take your dinner outside. You have to eat at some point during the day, no matter how busily responsible you are. Don’t worry about the fact that your meal wasn’t cooked on the grill. Spread a blanket on the lawn, fill your plate, and enjoy an old-fashioned picnic. Weather this good is too precious to take for granted.

Ladies, this time the column is all about us. Men, take a hike. This is personal and private stuff we’re talking about today so move on. What are we talking about you ask? Urination. Yes, you heard it right; the need to urinate, pee, relieve our bladders, go potty, whatever you want to call it. It all means the same thing and it’s this “need” that can put us over the edge.

Kids! That’s what did me in. I love my boys dearly, wouldn’t give ‘em up for anything. Well...

No, no, I mean it, I wouldn’t give them up for any reason whatsoever, even though carrying them for nine months ruined various body parts, especially my blad-der. I have four great kids; the two I carried for nine long is it ever going to end months, and two I got “by default” when I married their dad. The two I carried did terrible things to my innards. What the four of them did to my mind is even worse, but that’s a story for another time. For nine months my boys kicked, they punched, they bounced, and they laid heavily on my bladder. God gave that specific body part just so much elasticity and my kids stretched it to the limit, plus some. Now I’m left with leaky parts.

So the question is what does a bladder impaired woman do when the “need” arises? As a BIW myself, I believe we’ve all probably developed our own little tricks to deal with these situations. I know I have. Mostly it’s just shoving and pushing people out of the way so I can get to the bathroom first. Women, chil-dren, old ladies, I don’t care, just stay outta my way and nobody will get hurt. The “need” hit me suddenly just yesterday and it’s a good thing my mother had a tight hold on her walker, otherwise she might have had my footprints on her backside. Lest you think me heartless, had I knocked her down, I would have helped her back up after I was done in the bathroom.

I had planned on sharing a few of my best ploys with you in this article, but then I thought about it and I was afraid someone might use them against me. One of you could see me standing in a hallway not moving, with a look of panic on my face. You would real-ize I’m having a moment and can’t move for fear of tinkling down my leg. You may be tempted to startle

me or try to make me laugh. Please don’t. You may be a BIW one day yourself. Remember that old saying about paybacks! I’d hate to have to hunt you down.

The thing is I know I have bladder issues so I usually try to avoid those urgent situations at all costs. Some-times though I get caught up in something and the next thing I know, I’m searching for a bathroom while standing there jumping from foot to foot trying desper-ately not to hold myself like a little girl. If you see me in a frantic situation like that, please don’t interfere. Just point the way to the bathroom and step back. I’d do the same for you. Just to show you what a good person I can be, here’s a hint for any BIW: wear dark pants. I’ve learned from experience, it’s harder to notice the wet spots.

My husband and I have devised a plan when we travel. It’s similar to the game, stoplight that kids play. When I’m on green he can keep driving, but when I start to feel the “need,” I tell him I’m on yellow. That means I’m okay for now, but if he sees a rest area don’t even ask, just put the turn signal on. If I tell him I’m on orange, it means I’m not quite at crisis status yet, but I’m getting really close so find a bathroom … NOW.

When I’m on red I’m dangerous and people need to get out of my way. At that point I better be right out-side a bathroom door ‘cause I am now at emergency levels and my bladder is screaming for immediate relief. I need to pee now and I mean RIGHT NOW!! At this point I’m usually running and dribbling in my underwear at the same time. I don’t hit red often, but when I do it’s not pleasant. I end up in the bathroom stall trying to dry out my panties with toilet paper. This is not something I’m proud of and I’d like you all to know that I find these confessions to be painful and embarrassing.

So tell me, ladies, what tricks do you have up your sleeve or pant leg as the case may be? We’re all in this together so email me at [email protected] so we can share secrets. From one BIW to another, let’s stand united and not let our “need” put us over the edge.

Summer Cure:

Summer is Here

You just learned from an acquaintance that your man’s best friend is having marital problems. You ask your man. He’s surprised to learn the news. They’re best friends, you think, why doesn’t he know already?

Men’s brains are designed to look for facts and solutions so we can solve problems and fix things. Indeed, Louann Brizendine, PhD, describes the male brain as “a lean mean problem-solving machine.”

We’re also built to compete. For men life itself is a competition. You think your man is talking about sports with his friends? He’s not. They’re talking about who knows more about sports. It’s a verbal competition.Men’s desire to fix and compete explains why we don’t ask for help unless we really need it. Men want to feel competent. If we can’t fix our own problem, we’re not competent. Giving your guy unsolicited advice tells him that you think he’s incompetent. When men meet socially, we want to escape the serious problem solving and competition of the workplace; but we still do what we’re designed to do: Fix stuff and compete. However neither of these involve finding out how our buddy’s life is going. Learning whether his wife enjoys her new job doesn’t provide information that will help fix anything. Why seek answers that won’t help us fix things or compete better?

When men relax together, we’re interested in the new car our buddy is looking at and how our favorite sports teams are doing. But, if our buddy is having problems at home, we’ll tread lightly

around the subject. If he wants our help, he’ll ask. Meanwhile, we’ll let him solve his own problems.

So what should you do? Women play a huge role in their man’s life as the only close friend he may have, who he can talk to about personal issues. There are several basic rules that will make it easier for your man to talk to you.

First, you have to wait for him to bring up personal matters.

Second, NEVER share what he tells you with your friends or family. If he wanted them to know, he’d tell them. Telling your friends breaks trust and may make it the last time he’ll ever trust you with personal information.

Don’t mock him. Men thrive on respect. Mocking his secrets will end the conversation, and may end your relationship.

Only make suggestions when he asks for them. If he sounds upset, he may only be venting. Wait for a specific question.Don’t criticize him for what he’s thinking or how he got in the situation. Just like women often want men to listen, without trying to fix things, he wants you to listen, without criticizing.

You hold a special position in your man’s life. His male friends are extremely important, but you’re probably the only one who has a chance to see the deepest parts of his heart. Treat this position with special care and your relationship will flourish.

ASK A GUYWhy don’t men know much about thier friend’s lives?

In the Brown household another day has started fast and furious with Jamie looking for a lost library book and John unable to start his day with the green bowl his mom has on the table. No, he needs the blue one that is in the dish washer not clean. Hurriedly Mrs. Brown washes the bowl, pours the cereal and finds the lost book.

Something is nagging at the back of her mind as she hurries the kids along. What was it that she was going to check on this morning? Oh, that’s right, her husband had wanted her to check on the car insurance and be sure they had the right coverage. No time to think about anything extra right now, she meant to get it done but the kids couldn’t find their socks and the dog needed to go to the vet.

Right after everyone gets to school, there will be time to check on that coverage.

... BUT WAIT... she forgot about taking cookies for the classroom snack. Guess the insurance will have to wait.

Racing to the grocery she gratefully grabbed some chocolate chip cookies from the bakery and threw them into a bowl from the house. We all know how terrible it would be for the other

mom’s to know she didn’t bake them at home.

She gets the cookies safely into the car, checking the clock. Oh My... twenty minutes until snack time! Boy, she’ll have to hurry if she is going to get there on time. No time to put on her seat belt before she starts the car. As she begins to pull onto the road she reaches for the seat belt.. it is stuck... she gives it a tug and looks back to see what it is stuck on.

BAM! Out of nowhere, a large diesel truck slams into the side of her vehicle. The little car is tossed into a spin with her along for the ride. Helplessly, she tries to hang on as the force of the hit sends her reeling. Chocolate chip cookies fall all around. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured. Things could have been much worse. The authorities arrive and begin taking down her information. What type of insurance do you have Ma’am? Do you have collision on your policy? Ma’am ... MA’AM?

This story is just that... a story, but each of us can relate to the family involved. Shopping for auto insurance may not be much fun but it is a necessary step in protecting yourself and your loved ones from risk. ln Michigan we have

no-fault insurance. What does this mean? lt means that every driver is responsible for his/her own medical expenses regardless of fault. Every driver must carry a policy with PIP coverage. PIP stands for Personal lnjury Protection and provides coverage with medical expenses as well as lost income or funeral expenses. lf you sustain injuries in an auto accident, Michigan auto insurance laws require your insurer to pay the claim for your medical expenses. Take a moment today to check on your auto insurance policy.

Having the right insurance can make all the difference should anything happen. Call Barrett Insurance today for a consultation. Together we will find the auto insurance policy that is right for your family.

InsurIng sweet BusIness suCCessSarah Stewart knew how to bake. She loved baking cupcakes most, and she was very good at it. Everyone said she could make a living with her talent. Friends from church, mom’s from school and ladies from the neighborhood all told her she should start a business.

so sarah went to Office Depot and had her business cards made. she also had some really cute signs made up for car and even went the extra mile with adorable shirts to wear when she delivered her cupcakes. what more would she need?

Business was booming and sarah couldn’t be happier. every day there seemed to be another order, another delivery. she visited the school at least three times a week with everything from dangerous dinosaurs to dancing ballerinas.

One particularly busy Friday sarah had two deliveries at the elementary and another at the middle school. They all wanted the cupcakes delivered between 2 and 3 pm. sarah made it to the elementary but of course everyone was so excited it took her a little while to get on her way. Looking at her watch she knew she had to hurry because the middle school was on the other side of town.

sarah turned left onto Mains st. but she didn’t see the truck in her path and... wham... sarah managed to hit him square in the driver’s door. she quickly exchanged insurance information and hurried on to the middle school.

After the treats were delivered sarah called her insurance company to report the accident. telling them what happened, sarah was dumbfounded when she learned the claim had been denied because

she was not carrying business insurance on her vehicle. remember those cute signs sarah had put on her car? That changed the insurance requirements on her vehicle but she had no idea until it was too late.

small business can be fun and rewarding but it is very important to be sure that you are carrying the right insurance. everyday decisions like adding a sign to your automobile can alter your insurance coverage. Don’t guess about your coverage, call the professionals at Barrett insurance to discuss the dangers to your business. Call today for a risk free consultation. The professionals at Barrett Insurance will design an affordable insurance program to cover your expanding “cupcake” business.

AGING WITH ATTITUDEOld Enough To Know Better!

Bullying is defined (Einarsen, 1999) as: Repeated actions and practices that are directed to one or more persons, which are unwanted by the victim; may be done deliberately or unconsciously, but clearly cause humiliation, offence or distress, and may interfere with performance and/or cause an unpleasant environment.

unfortunately, bullying is even alive and well in the senior community. Just take a look around and you’ll realize little bullies grow old too! If we are concerned with community health and wellness, we must acknowledge that bullying is an issue even for the elderly.

Last fall I attended a workshop by Loraleigh Keashly from the Department of Communications at Wayne State entitled, “Bullying in Senior Communities: Old enough to know better?” After the workshop I asked questions and spoke about the subject with several community members. The examples they gave may surprise you, as they did me:

From a senior gathering/resource center: “It happens every day in the community room where people want to eat with their friends and exclude others for various reasons. Some of the unkind reasons they give can be anything from a bad smell, dirty clothes, or even their inability to eat ‘correctly’ because they’ve had a stroke or a disease such as Parkinson’s.”

From a nursing home aide: “In the dining room one lady was mean to another because she couldn’t hear. The lady

and her friends bullied and made fun of the deaf woman until she cried.”

From a senior housing resident: “Two 80 year old ladies apparently had dated the same guy in high school and still hated each other, one believing the other had stolen her boyfriend. They happened to move in to the same complex, unbeknownst to each other. They met at the elevator one day and proceeded to get into a fight, with canes and walkers flying! The police were even called!”

There are many ways seniors can be victims of bullying and abuse- abuse by family members, caregivers or staff, bullying among fellow seniors and fellow community members, and bullying by organizations, condominium boards, homeowners associations or policies of a senior facility.

If you attend senior facilities or live in senior housing, ask if they have a policy against bullying and be sure it is carried out. If there is no policy in place, get involved and encourage them to adopt one. Facilities that serve seniors should educate their staff and make them aware of the seriousness of bullying. As a community we need to encourage everyone to behave respectfully and professionally, regardless of age!

No matter what your lifestyle, career or home life are like, you encounter stress in various ways throughout your week.Stress can re-ally take a hold, making it difficult to function, bringing illness and discomfort in the form of neck pain, headaches and physical anxiety.

If you’re finding it difficult to manage stress then consider these tips for some helpful re-minders of how to manage stress and not let it drag you down:

Have an outlet. Whether it be listening to music, writing, boxing or playing chess, it’s im-portant to have a healthy way to express your emotions. This is a great way to combat other emotions that may tie in such as anxiety or de-pression as well.

Get some rest. Everything seems more exag-gerated when we’re not well rested. While you may not need or be ale to get a full 8 hours of sleep, the goal is to feel rested each morning.

Plan ahead. If you’re going into a situation an-ticipating a stress response then try to prepare yourself for it. Sometimes imagery can help prepare you for the situation and when the actual encounter takes place, it’s not as bad as you imagined.

Chiropractic care is also a healthy way to manage stress. Not only can an adjustment be great for you physically but it’s a great way to manage your body’s stress response. We all en-counter and manage stress differently. Finding what works best for you may take some time but now you have the tools to make stress play by your rules.

With summer upon us and everyone heading for the lake, there is nothing like a good beach read! The romance novel genre is blessed with a slew of very good authors who each have a good writing style in addition to happy love stories; nothing too heavy—just lighthearted fare. That’s what you need when visiting the beach. So grab your beach bag, suntan lotion, and lawn chair and settle down in front of some Great Lakes waves!

Speaking of lighthearted fare, if you haven’t read Sophie Kinsella you are in for a treat. She has written a series of books entitled “The Shopaholic Novels” that will make you smile. Some of them are a tad preposterous, but on the whole, you will enjoy the series. In the first one, Confessions of a Shopaholic, we are introduced to Becky Bloomwood, our heroine for the series. She loves to shop and has, little by little, put herself into great debt. The first story takes us through her life as a shopaholic and, of course, ends with a future husband, Luke, and a managed budget. There was a movie based on this book and it was a bit silly, but entertaining. Her second in the series, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, revolves around her new job and her new guy, Luke. The third, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, well you can guess what that’s about. Shopaholic and Sister reunites her with her long-lost sis-ter, with whom she thinks she has nothing in common. The fifth, Shopaholic and Baby, is also obvious. In the final novel, Mini Shopaholic, we find a harried Becky with Minnie, her out-of-control two-year old. Minnie wants everything she sees (like her mother) and mommy Becky just doesn’t know how to say “no”.

Sophie has also written a couple of stand-alone books, and one I enjoyed was Can You Keep A Secret? Our her-oine, Emma Corrigan, is traveling on an airplane which she believes is going to crash. She begins babbling all of her regrets and secrets to the man sitting next to her on the plane. And, of course, when she gets back to work she discovers the stranger is her company’s elusive CEO, who has come to inspect and familiarize himself with the

workings of his company. Naturally, by the end of the book they are…...well, you’ll have to read the book!

Sophie Kinsella also writes under the name of Mad-eleine Wickham. I have read one of her novels, Cock-tails for Three. It is a good story about three gals who have become friends working for a fashion magazine in London. They each have a secret in their life, and when a chance encounter at a cocktail bar sets a chain of events in motion for them, their secrets are eventually revealed. Other books under this pseudonym are Sleep-ing Arrangements, The Wedding Girl, The Gatecrasher, Swimming Pool Sunday, A Desirable Residence, 40 Love, and The Tennis Party. I am looking forward to finding these books and reading them over the course of the next year. If you read a lot like I do, it’s good to mix authors up so that their individual writing styles don’t go stale. I recommend reading one author, then switching to a couple of other authors before revisiting the first. That way, you will find a renewed delight in rediscovering each writing style.

Have a great summer, and see you at the library!

Calling all my Simply Hers supporters... We will be running in the Warrior Dash to support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and we welcome your support.

Warrior Dash is a mud-crawling, fire-leaping, extreme running event. This fierce running series is held on the most challenging and rugged terrain across the globe. And now, it’s also a great way to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital face these deadly diseases.

St. Jude is one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treat-ment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases. It costs $1.7 million a day to operate St. Jude, where families never pay for the care they receive.

Service like this would be impossible without the support of the Warrior Dash and events like it. Every donation, regardless of the amount, is a great help. The funds we raise as a St. Jude Warriors will help fuel the hospital’s groundbreaking research that leads to pioneering care and treatments for childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. As of April, St. Jude Warriors have raised over one million dollars for the children’s hospital!

One of our goals is to raise enough pledges to earn some luxuries during the Warrior Dash that will make the day a whole lot easier including private showers and bathrooms. St. Jude Warriors who raise at least $250 each will gain access to the St. Jude Warrior Battle Tent and everything they’ll need on race day.

Thanks in advance for your support and We’ll be sharing our experiences in the next issue of Simply Hers.

Celebrate the Tastes of Summer!

2 racks pork spareribs, about 2 lb each

6 bottles of beer

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 bay leaves, 6 to 8 large sprigs fresh thyme,

6 to 8 large sprigs fresh sage (or 2 tablespoons seasoning salt)

Coarse salt to taste

2 to 6 jalapeno peppers (according to taste) seeded and sliced

1 cup store-bought or homemade barbecue sauce

In a saucepan large enough to hold the ribs, combine all the ingredients except the ribs and barbecue sauce and bring to a boil. Immerse the ribs into the hot liquid, they should be completely covered. Bring back to a boil, lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 1 hour until the meat is tender.

Turn off the heat and let the ribs cool in the cooking liquid. This can be done several hours before grilling. Refrigerate if necessary. Keep the ribs in liquid.

When ready to serve, lightly oil the grate and preheat the grill to hot.

Remove the ribs from the cooking liquid and pat dry. Brush both sides with BBQ sauce and place the ribs meat side down on the grill. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, basting with barbecue sauce, until golden and crisp. Turn on the other side and cook for another 6 minutes until nicely brown.

Remove from the grill and serve immediately with extra barbe-cue sauce on the side.
