Click on the picture to see the steps used to create this composition.Even with a telephoto lens I was unable to use the viewfinder alone to frame the subject. The original photo includes broader view of the ball game and their a number of elements that distract from the pitcher.

The first step was to crop the picture as shown by the black box.

However the cropped picture still contains some distracting elements. There are two ball players warming up behind the fence. There is a fire plug next to the coach and a large pole seeming to grow out of the fireplug. With considerable luck the action was a split second exposure at just the right moment. There was no time to carefully frame the photograph with the viewfinder. But editing software came to the rescue. I was able to remove the players behind the fence, eliminate the fireplug, and remove the pole. This enabled me to adjust the rule of thirds by positioning the pitcher in my new frame, to position the pitcher to the left of the frame formed by the horizontal format allowing him to throw into the picture, and to remove the distractions from the background. This editing significantly improved the composition of this photograph.
