    The post explains how to make a pure sine wave inverter using ordinary components and yet get reasonablyoutstanding results.

    The circuit basically uses a push pull topology through a couple of 24V batteries. The use of two 24Vbatteries allows lower AH batteries to be incorporated with higher efficiency and wattage.

    12V batteries can be also tried however the power output would be reduced to half.

    Since a dual supply is used the connected transformer does not need to be a center tapped type, rather atwo wire ordinary transformer becomes suitable here.

    The couple of designs shown below are all that would be required for implementing this simple puresine wave inverter circuit.

    The first circuit is the basic sine wave generator which becomes the feeding input to the main sine waveamplifier or the output stage.

    The sine wave generator produces a pure sine wave output with the shown components at about 50Hz, forother frequencies the 2.5K resistor may be altered, and tested in a simulator for fixing the desired results.

    The sine generator circuit should be supplied with +/-12V, and not directly from the 24V battery supply asthat might damage the IC permanently.

    The opamps used in this sine generator are from the IC TL072

    The next diagram shows the output stage of the proposed simple pure sine wave inverter circuit. As can beseen the design is not at all complicated.

    All the involved components are standard, and easily available.

    The mosfets are IRF540n and IRF9540n which compliment each other to produce the required push pulleffect over the attached transformer.

    With a 0-24V/25amp transformer, and a couple of 24V batteries the circuit would be able to generate ashigh as 600 watts of pure sine wave output at the relevant voltage.

    The output across the right hand side opamp of the sine generator is to be connected across the input of thesecond circuit for initializing the proposed operations.

    the transformer here is 0-24V, but you can also use a 24-0-24V to make it a 48V transformer,but the batteries will have to be 48V x 2nos...this will make the inverter 1KVA rated.

    Hi Swagatam

    There are two questions I would like to ask:

    1. Efficiency of this inverter2. If I use salvaged power transformer (heavy iron core type, 50hz) from an APC UPS 650, how it can beused in 12V+0+12V circuits since its windings are 8 to 9 volts each instead of 12V. How am I supposedto use such transformers in schematics mentioned at your site, would u like to suggest any change inschematic etc.?

    Hi Sam,

    I am not sure about the efficiency because I haven't tried it yet.

    8 to 9 volts in each half winding is in fact perfect for most of my designs as it would provide alittle higher than the rated 220V, so even at lower input voltages the output would stickaround 220V.

    Hi Swagatam

    Thanks for your quick response. However I have two more question:

    1. if salvaged transformer winding is 8-9 volt then 12-14 volt from a juicy battery is going to damage thewinding by overheating it since it was wound for a lower voltage.

    2. Moreover if salvaged transformer is from a sine wave UPS then a modified square wave or squarewave inverter may slowly damage it due to extra transients since it was made for a sine wave and notfor square wave. I think square wave transformers are made with extra winding (head room fortransients) but am not sure what do you say?

    Hi Sam,A transformer is a solid state device which is made up of metals.

    It would get damaged only under conditions where it gets very hot, otherwise I don't think youcan damage an iron-cored transformer through any other means.

    9V is just under 12V so it would make the transformer slightly warm, not much, moreover it'sthe wattage consumption at the output that may be responsible for heating up thetransformer, if it's controlled appropriately, things would be all right.

    You may incorporate my circuits which have a 555 pwm controller attached, this would giveyou an option of controlling the RMS so that the transformer is not operated under incorrectvoltage parameters.

    It is not a battery charger circuit, it's an inverter circuit, if you want to include a charger circuit,you can attach the following circuit with it:

    Hi Sir,

    Your skills building inverters are amazing. I've seen inverters that do not rely on the transformer to make the output, instead, they first transformlow DCV to high DCV (H-bridge)using FETS and small HF transformers, and then modulate for puresine AC through another H-Bridge i think.

    Is it possible that you can give us such a design, cause it seems one can get outputs over 2000W usingsmall transformers.

    Such inverters are not difficult to design except the output ferrite transformer which requiresspecific calculations therefore becomes a fairly complex parameter to handle.

    Due to this reason I haven't posted any of these circuits.

    Sorry to bother you again with this, i've tried to zoom in but still can't figure out somenumbers, specifically:R9-R10 - i see 1K(something) i assume 1K0 meaning 1K OhmR19-R20-R21-R25- i see (somthing)E22 i assume 0E22 meaning 0,22 OhmR24 i assume 10E meaning 10 OhmsQ7-Q8 i assume BD140also a assume international notation meaning for example 2k2 = 2,2K Ohm

    it could be a tantalum or electrolytic, doesn't matter, but tantalum would be more accurate.

    I find this design very similar to what I am looking to build for my project.

    First, I need to step up 12V DC input to 240V DC output through a Flyback converter. Then, I need toinvert that output to an AC form. Can I use this circuit?

    Hi Mr.Weizhuan,

    This circuit is not what you are looking for. The above circuit makes use of iron-core bulkytransformer, so it won't suit your application.

    Simulators can be compared with a "blind man with a stick" so I never use them.

    Sir Swagatam,I'm working on the circuit at the moment,but I have a some confusions which I'l be reallyhappy if you can clear me on. First is the use of "couple of 24v batteries". does it mean I cant build thecircuit and use single 12v battery?secondly, The outputs in the first circuit, are two. Which of them do i connect to the second circuit asinput? If its the one on the RHS,where does the second one go?Finally,how can i determine the Amperage of my transformer?

    The above circuit works with two batteries, you can use two 12V batteries but the relativepower output will be 50% reduced than two 24V batteries.

    Use the output from the green line, extreme right side.

    for knowing the trafo amp apply 220V at its relevant winding, connect an AC ammeter set atmax current range on other side of the trafo for a few seconds until you get the requiredcurrent reading.

    Ignore the red line, it's unused...

    12-0-12 will work but the center should be left open and a 24V batt should be used.

    You will not get any power from a 1.3amp trafo...use at least a 5 amp rated trafo.

    As mentioned in my previous comment, the supply needs to be applied to the supply pins ofthe IC, the lines which are marked with ground symbols will go to the series point of the twobatteries, because in the above design we have used two batteries in series for getting therequired dual supply voltage.

    You will need a series battery connection as shown in the diagram for getting the required (+)(-) and ground terminals, without this the circuit won't work.

    Hi Paul,

    you can use the 0-18V tap and connect it with the above circuit, and use two 24V batts inseries as indicated.

    it's nonpolar, can be any low leakage type. IRF840 is 600v rated won't be a good match with24v supplies. use irf540 instead.

    it will almost equal to 24V.

    if RC4558 is rated to handle 24V comfortably then you can use it.

    A simple BJT or mosfet stage won't understand a sine wave, it'll start conducting fully themoment sine voltage exceeds 0.6V or 3V for mosfet.

    Dear Sir, is it possible to shift the phase so the the output from the first IC TL072 and the second are at120 degree? Iam thinking of adding a third OP AMP to get three outputs at 120 degrees shift. This willallow me to connect the three sine wave outputs to a power stage and transformer in order to get highpower three phase.

    Can it work by varying the capacitors? I can also see that the gains are different at each output so weneed to make them equal before feeding them to power stage. Could you please help with such designsir?

    Hi Edward, yes the circuit can be used for all day long if appropriate heasinking are providedto the devices.

    2.2nF will not do, 2.2uF could work, but it's better to use a 2uF cap[, you can use two 1uF inparallel for making a 2uF cap.

    zinnaboy, you will have to make the circuit exactly as its presented, 2uF should be 2uF only,any other value will not do, use two 1uF caps in parallel. This project is a difficult project andis recommended for experts so please be cautioned.

    Hi Prasad,

    Single battery will not work because the above design uses a single winding push-pullconfiguration.12-0-12v will work, keep the center taps shorted and unused and use 2nos 24v batts.

    The above design is not a center tap type inverter so center tap cannot be used here.

    biannz, pure sine wave circuits are difficult and only recommended for expert hobbyists, if youare confident you can go ahead wit the above circuit.

    all pats should be exactly as given in the schematic, you cannot replace them with othervalues, it will produce wrong results.

    biannz, please check the datasheet of the IC and find out the Vdd(+) and Vss(-) pins of theIC.

    It will definitely need power from the battery otherwise it will never work.

    biannz, the mosfets should not become hot if the cirucit is built correctly.

    take the help of an expert electronic engineer who can schematics well.

    how can a n-channel work for p-channel?? think before you ask.

    0.22 are in fact for safeguarding the devices, so they are definitely not causing the heatingissues, it's surely due to some hidden fault in your design.

    dont worry about the TL072 output, first make sure the inveter devices remain cool on switch.

    the green output is the sine wave output, the red one is square wave.

    No, you cannot use the sine output with any inverter's power stage...that will not yieldsinewave output...that's why only the above circuit has been recommended
