    A scale must be set prior to savinga downloaded DC Logger file

    for the logger to function correctly

    To create scales with the Logger connected:ThefirsttimeaDCloggerisusedwithafreshinstalloftheSimpleLoggersoftwareascalemustbesetforeachdifferentDCloggermodel.Onceascale issetforaspecificmodel, thesoftwarewilldefault to this scale each time that model is connected. To set a scaleforthemodelinuse,connecttheloggerandaScale menu will appear. Click on Scaleandthescalingwindowfor themodelusedwillappear.Fromthescalingwindowyoumaysetacustomscaleoropenapredefinedscale from theFile-Open menu. The predefinedscaleisinthedirectoryfortheSimpleLoggersoftware.

    To create scales without the Logger connected:Go to Scaling from the Filemenuandselecttherangeforthemodelused.FromthescalingwindowyoumaycreateacustomscaleandsaveitusingtheFile-SaveCommand.ThepredefinedscalesaresavedinthedirectoryfortheSimpleLoggersoftware.

    A scale may be set prior to or after downloading,but before saving.

    2.1 Indicators and ButtonsTheSimpleLogger® has one button and one indicator. Both are located onthefrontpanel.ThePRESSbuttonisusedtostartandstoprecordingsandtoturntheloggeronandoff.

    TheRedLEDindicatesthestatusofthelogger:

    • Single Blink: STAND-BYmode• Double Blink: RECORD mode• Continuously On: OVERLOADcondition• No Blinks: OFFmode

    2.2 Inputs and OutputsThe left side of the Simple Logger® incorporates 4mm safety banana jacks for the Models L410 and L430 and a screw connector for the Model L320.

    Therightsideoftheloggerhasafemale9-pin“D”shellserialconnectorusedfordatatransmissionfromtheloggertoyourcomputer.

    2.3 MountingYourSimpleLogger® is equipped with clearance holes in the base plate tabsformounting.Forlesspermanentmounting,theVelcro®pads(sup-plied loose)canbeattachedto the loggerandthesurfacetowhichtheloggerwillbemounted.

    OPERATION

    4.1 Software Installation

    1. InserttheSimpleLogger® CD into your CD-ROM drive.If auto-run isenabled, theSetupprogramwill start automatically. Ifauto-run is not enabled, select Run from the Start menu and type inD:\SETUP (ifyourCD-ROMdrive isdriveD. If this isnot thecase,substitutetheappropriatedriveletter).

    2. The Set-up window will appear.

    There are a several options to choose from. Some options(*) require an internet connection.

    • Simple Logger, Version 6.xx-InstallstheSimpleLogger® soft-ware to the computer.

    • *Acrobat Reader - Links to the Adobe® web site to download themost recent version of Adobe® Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader isrequired for viewing PDF documents supplied on the CD-ROM.

    • *Check for Available Software Updates - Opens the AEMCSoftware update web site, where updated software versions areavailablefordownloading,ifnecessary.

    • View User Guide and Manuals - Opens Windows®Explorerforviewingofdocumentationfiles.

    3. To install the software, select Simple Logger Software Setup inthe top section of the Set-up window, then select Simple Logger,Version 6.xx in the Options section.

    4. Click the Install button and follow the on-screen prompts to install thesoftware.

    4.2 Recording Data• Connecttheloggertothecircuittobetested.

    NOTE: Be sure to observe the polarity oryoumaynotgetareading.• PressthePRESSbuttononthetopoftheloggertobegintherecording

    session. The LED indicator will double-blink to indicate that the record-ingsessionhasstarted.

    • When thedesired recordingsessionhasfinished,press thePRESSbuttontoendtherecording.TheLEDindicatorwillsingle-blinktoindi-catetherecordingsessionhasendedandtheloggerisinStand-by.

    • Removethe logger fromthecircuitunder testandtransport it to thecomputerfordatadownloading.SeetheUserGuideontheCD-ROMfordownloadinginstructions.

    4.3 Using the SoftwareLaunch the software and connect the RS-232 cable from your computer tothelogger.

    NOTE:Alanguagewillneedtobeselecteduponthefirstlaunch.

    Select PortfromthemenubarandselecttheComport(COM1,23or4)youwillbeusing(seeyourcomputermanual).Oncethesoftwareautomati-callydetectsthebaudrate,theloggerwillcommunicatewiththecomputer.(IDnumberoftheloggerandnumberofpointsrecordeddisplayed).Select Downloadtodisplaythegraph.(Takesabout90seconds.)Select Filefromthemenubar,thenScalingandtheRangeofyourlogger.

    4.3.1 Scale and Engineering Unit Programming

    TheSimpleLogger® Models L320, L410, and L430 allow the operator to pro-gramthevaluesforscaleandengineeringunitsfromwithinthesoftware.Thispermitstheusertodisplaytherecordeddataonthegraphorinthetabularlistingdirectly,intheunitsappropriatetothemeasurement,ratherthanmathematicallyconvertingavoltageoracurrenttotheproperscaleandvalueafterthegraphisdisplayed.

    Scales can be programmed from two locations in the software:• File menu option: Use this option to create a library of scales to use

    withDCvoltageandDCcurrent loggers.Thiswill allow theuser toselectanumberofpredefinedscales.

    • Scale menu option: Usethisoptiontocreatescalesforloggerscon-nectedtotheserialportfordownloading.

    TheSimpleLogger®softwareallowstheoperatortodefineupto17pointsalongthescaleforDCcurrentmeasurementandupto11pointsforDCvoltagemeasurementtypeloggers.Any combination of points may be used to create the scale, which allows theusertoplotbothlinearandnon-lineardata.(SeeFigures2and3).

    4.3.2 Creating a Library of Scales• SelectFile and then Scaling from the main menu.• Selectthetypeofloggertobescaledfromthechoicespresented.• Awindowsimilar toFigure4willappearassoonasyoumakeyour

    selection. This window shows the programmable scale points andtheprogrammableunitsfield.Theleftscreenprovidesthescaleandunitprogramming,whiletherightsidedisplaystheprofileofthepro-grammedscaleinrelationshiptotheactualinputtothelogger.

    Scalevaluesenteredherewillnoteffectthecurrentgraph,shouldonebeonthescreen.Thiswindowisstrictlyforcreatingtemplatestobeusedatalaterdatewithnewlydownloadedloggers.Creatingandstoringthescalesandunitsherewillsaveyoutimelateron,especiallyforfrequentlyusedscalesettings.

    Two buttons are available from within this window:• Clear All button: This will clear all scale numbers entered and any

    unitsenteredallowingyoutheopportunitytostartoveragain.

    • Close button: Returnstothemainmenuwithoutsavingthedata.

    Perform the following steps to create a Template:• Clickinanyoftheblankslotsandtypeinanumber(upto5characters)

    toenterascalevalue.Theminussignanddecimalpointcanbeusedasvalidcharacters(e.g.-10.0wouldbeavalid5characternumber).As you enter numeric data in the scale slots, the scale profile willappearonthesmallgraphintherightsideofthewindow.Bothlinearandnon-linearprofilesareacceptable.

    • Once the scale is defined, click in the Units box to program theengineeringunitstobedisplayedonthegraph.Upto5alphanumericcharactersmaybetypedinthisbox(e.g.PSIGorGPM,etc.).

    • Afterall thedata isenteredandyouaresatisfiedwith the template,click on Fileatthetopleftsideofthedialogboxwindow.

    • Chooseoneoftheavailableoptions:- Open: Retrieves a previously stored template.- Save: Saves the current template you just created for future use.- Print: Printsacopyofthescaleandunitprogrammingwindowas

    seen on the screen.

    4.3.3 Creating Scales for Connected Loggers

    • ConnecttheSimpleLogger® to the computer’s serial port for download-ing.Seemainmanualfordownloadinginstructions.

    • Once theproper port is selected, datawill appear in theupdate boxat the top righthandsideof thescreen.This isan indication that thesoftwarehasmadeconnectiontothelogger.TheScale command willalso appear on the task bar if the logger detected allows scale andengineeringunitprogramming.

    • AscreensimilartoFigure5willappear.Theleftsideofthescreenpro-videsthescaleandunitprogramming,whiletherightsidedisplaystheprofileoftheprogrammedscaleinrelationshiptotheactualinputtothelogger.

    • Theoperatormaysetthescalebyprogrammingasfewastwopoints,thelowendandthehighend,orbyenteringasmanypointsasnecessarytodefinethescaleupto17pointsforthe4-20mAloggerandupto11pointsfortheDCvoltageloggers.ThepointsentereddonothavetobelinearbutshouldbeanaccuraterepresentationoftherelationshipoftheDCsignalto the scale points.

    • Toenterascalevalueinanyoftheslots,clickontheslotandtypeinanumberupto5characters.Theminussignanddecimalpointmaybeusedasvalidcharacters(e.g.-25.4wouldbeavalid5-characternumber).

    • Once the scale is defined, click in the Unit box to program theengineeringunitstobedisplayedonthegraph.Upto5alphanumericcharactersmaybetypedinthisbox.

    • Onceyouhaveenteredthecorrectscaleandunitdata,clickonOKtoproceed.ThescreeninFigure6willappeargivingyoutheopportunitytosavetheentereddataforfutureuse.ClickonYestosavethedataorNotobypasssavingthedataanduseonetimeonly.

    • IfyouclickYes,adialogboxwillopensimilartoFigure7whereyoucantypeinthename(upto8characters)youwishtouseforthefile.

    • ClickonOKtosavethefileandplotthegraphwiththenewscaleandunit data or click on Cancel to discard it and return to the scale and unitprogrammingscreen.

    MAINTENANCE

    5.1 Battery InstallationUnder normal conditions, the battery will last up to a year of continuous recordingunlesstheloggerisrestartedveryfrequently.IntheOFFmode,theloggerputsalmostnoloadonthebattery.UsetheOFFmodewhentheloggerisnotinuse.Replacethebatteryonceayearin normal use.Iftheloggerwillbeusedattemperaturesbelow32°F(0°C)orisfrequentlyturnedonandoff,replacethebatteryeverysixtoninemonths.

    1. Makesureyourloggeristurnedoff(noblinkinglight)andallinputsare disconnected.

    2. Turntheloggerupsidedown.RemovethefourPhillipsheadscrewsfrom the base plate, then take off the base plate.

    3. Locatethetwo-wire(red/black)batteryconnectorandattachthe9Vbatterytoit.Makesurethatyouobservepolaritybyliningupthebattery posts to the proper terminals on the connector.

    4. Oncetheconnectorispluggedontothebattery,insertthebatteryintotheholdingcliponthecircuitboard.

    5. Iftheunitisnotinrecordmodeafterinstallingthenewbattery,dis-connect it and press the button twice then reinstall the battery.

    6. ReattachthebaseplateusingthefourscrewsremovedinStep2.

    Yourloggerisnowrecording(LEDblinking).PressthePRESS button for fivesecondstostoptheinstrument.

    NOTE:For long-termstorage, remove thebattery topreventdis-chargeeffects.

    5.2 CleaningThe body of the logger should be cleanedwith a clothmoistenedwithsoapy water. Rinse with a cloth moistened with clean water. Do not use solvent.

    Importing .TXT Files into a Spreadsheet

    Opening a Simple Logger .TXT file in Excel

    ThefollowingexampleusedwithExcelVer.7.0orhigher.

    1. After opening the Excel program, select “File” from the mainmenu and then select “Open”.

    2. In the dialog box that appears, browse and open the folderwhere your logger .TXT files are stored. This will be locatedin C:\Program Files\Simple Logger 6.xx if you accepted thedefaultchoiceofferedbytheloggerinstallationprogram.

    3. Next,changethefiletypeto“Text Files”inthefieldlabeledFilesof Type.Allthe.TXTfilesintheloggerdirectoryshouldnowbevisible.

    4. Double-clickonthedesiredfiletoopentheTextImportWizard.

    5. Reviewtheselectionsinthefirstwizardscreenandmakesurethatthefollowingchoicesareselected:

    OriginalDataType: DelimitedStartImportatRow: 1FileOrigin: Windows(ANSI)

    6. Click the “NEXT”buttonatthebottomoftheWizarddialogbox.The second wizard screen will appear.

    7. Click on “Comma” intheDelimitersbox.Acheckmarkshouldappear.

    8. Click the “NEXT” buttonatthebottomoftheWizarddialogbox.The third wizard screen will appear.

    9. A view of the actual data to be imported should appear in thelowersectionofthewindow.Column1shouldbehighlighted.IntheColumnDataFormatwindow,select“Date”.

    10. Next,clickon“Finish” to complete the process and import thedata.

    11. Thedatawillnowappearinyourspreadsheetintwocolumns(AandB)andwilllooksimilartothatshowninTableA-1.

    Formatting the Date and Time

    Column ‘A’ contains a decimal number that represents both date and time. Excelcanconvertthisnumberdirectlyasfollows:

    1. Click on column ‘B’ at the top of the column to select the data,then click on “Insert” from the main menu and select “Columns”from the drop-down menu.

    2. Next,clickoncolumn‘A’atthetopofthecolumntoselectthedata,thenclickon“Edit” from the main menu and select “Copy”to copy the entire column.

    3. Click on cell 1 of column ‘B’ and then click on “Edit” and select“Paste” to insert a duplicate of column ‘A’ into column ‘B’. This isnecessary if you want to show the date and time in two separatecolumns.

    4. Next,clickonthetopofcolumn‘A’,thenclickon“Format” andselect “Cells” from the drop-down menu.

    5. Inthedialogboxthatopens,selectthe“Date” option from thecategorylistontheleft.Selectthedateformatyoudesireandclick on “OK” to format the column.

    6. Click on the top of column ‘B’, then click on “Format” and select“Cells” from the drop-down menu.

    7. Inthedialogboxthatopens,selectthe“Time” option from thecategorylistontheleft.Selectthetimeformatyoudesireandclick on “OK” to format the column.

    Table A-2 shows a typical spreadsheet with date, time and value displayed. Itmaybenecessarytochangethecolumnwidthtoseeallthedata.

    Time-Extension Recording (TXR™)

    Timeextensionrecordingisanautomaticprocessthatupdatesthesamplerate and the number of stored data points based on the length of therecording.Themaximumnumberofstoreddatapointsis8192.

    When thedata logger starts a new recording session, it does soat itsfastestsamplerateof4096pointsperhour(0.88secondsperpoint).TheSimpleLoggers®canrecordatthisratefortwohours.Iftherecordingses-sioncontinuesbeyondtwohours,thetimeextensionrecordingtechniquebecomes active.

    Beginningwiththesample,afterthecompletionoftwohoursofrecording,theloggercontinuesrecordingbyselectivelyoverwritingpreviouslystoreddata.TheSimple Logger® also halves its sample rate to 2048/hr (1.76secondsperpoint) for thenewstoredvalues tobecompatiblewith thepreviously recorded values.

    Recording continues for the next two hours at this new rate until theremaining4096storagepointsarefilled.

    Limited Warranty

    The Simple Logger® Model L320/L410/L430 is warranted to the owner for a period of two years from the date of original purchase againstdefects in manufacture. This limited warranty is given by AEMC® Instruments, not by the distributor from whom it was purchased. This warranty is void if the unit has been tampered with, abused or if the defect is related to service not performed by AEMC® Instruments.
