NSWTHMN303 Investigate Australia’s Asia Pacific Relations

ORAL PRESENTATION – 40%

Presentations will take place in Week 12 – 6 and 8 May, 2014Investigate an issue relevant to Australia’s Asia Pacific relations. Demonstrate knowledge of differing perspectives relevant to the selected issue.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO1. Choose your topic2. Do your initial research (keeping a note of where information comes from)3. Decide on the perspectives or viewpoints or opinions you will discuss. Who has these

opinions – government, political parties, business organisations, NGO’s, interest groups, communities, individuals. You need to present at least two perspectives or viewpoints but in many issues there will be more than two points of view.

4. Further research (keeping a note of where information comes from)5. Prepare your speech

Introduction – outline your topic (what/where/ when/ how), what makes the issue significant and outline the viewpoints you will discuss (what/who)Body – detailed discussion of the viewpoints or opinions with evidenceConclusion – why you favour one view, the difficulty of deciding between views, the complexity of the issue, long term/short term solutions

6. Prepare visual material to accompany your speech. Your visual material should be used to tell the story. Don’t use a lot of writing.

7. Prepare a one page summary, 250 words, use dot points8. Prepare a bibliography of at least 5 items. All bibliographies should be in alphabetical order

according to the first word in the item. Include as much information as you can – author, date, title, publisher, place of publication (this is the URL if you are using an internet source)

9. Annotate three references using the guides provided10. Present your seminar 10- 15 minutes11. Know enough about your topic to be able to answer questions from the class12. Each class member is expected to at least ask one question of another speaker. This will be

recorded. It helps you pay attention and give the speaker and opportunity to expand their knowledge as required in criterion 5.

An issue relevant to Australia’s Asia Pacific RelationsThis is very broad and could include issues related to trade, tourism, migration, human rights, terrorism, international law, people smuggling, drug smuggling, foreign aid, defence cooperation, peacekeeping, etc. You need to make a clear statement about why your chosen issue is significant to the Asia-Pacific region and /or to Australia’s relationships in that region.

Two differing viewpoints/opinionsOnce you have chosen your topic you need to consider some of the opinions or viewpoints about the issue you can investigate. One way to do this is to pose questions and then try to look at those questions from different viewpoints, (at least two) remembering always that your comments must be based on evidence. Viewpoints will generally come from the stakeholders involved in the issue. You must be able to clearly say who/which group has that perspective and why they have that perspective or viewpoint.
