Princeton, B.C. – TELUS is investing $300,000 in Princeton this year to enhance its wireless and wired broadband Internet coverage for area residents and businesses.

“TELUS’ $300,000 investment means people and businesses right here in Princeton will have more access to the Internet and enhanced wire-less services,” said Steve Jenkins, TELUS gen-eral manager for the Southern Interior. “The demand for advanced communications services is exploding in Princeton, and TELUS is com-mitted to bringing the latest technology, both wired and wireless, to the community.”

Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists enjoyed a 2 ½ hour nature walk through Melissa and Wayne Manning’s property on Copper Mountain Road, Saturday, June 8. Fourteen of us, led by Peter Antonick, spent the sunny morning scouting for wildflowers, mushrooms, old growth trees, birds and other wildlife. We were rewarded with the discovery of various varieties of wildflowers, including fireweed, rosy pussytoes, and small-flowered penstemon.

One of our club birding experts observed 25 species of birds, while others discovered two

types of tree frogs and a striped garter snake that conveniently slithered up the branches of a small tree to allow us great viewing! Many thanks to the Mannings for graciously allowing us to wander at will throughout their acreage.

Our next field trip will be held on June 22, when Tip Anderson will take us to Wolfe Lake for some hiking and/or kayaking. Phone Tip at 250-295-3369 to confirm and meet at Billy’s at 9 am. We have a full slate of field trips lined up for the next 3 months; for more information on them call 250-295-7560. After this month’s meeting we will not meet again until September 10, when Zoe Kirk will speak on bear awareness, specific to this area.

It is official! The RDOS Board has passed a resolution to place the Granite Creek ghost town on the Heritage Register for Area H. Special thanks to Lindsay Bourque of RDOS for her hard work. Lindsay provided us with information on how to prepare a Statement of Significance which was needed for the Board presentation and she patiently advised us on amending and editing the Statement. Lindsay then added this subject to the RDOS meet-ing agenda to be voted upon. We are so very grateful to her. Without her help this could not have hap-pened.

What does this mean? Placing a site on the Heritage Register does not protect the site. It for-mally recognizes Granite Creek as an historic place. Having Granite on the Historic Register will

“enhance the public’s appreciation of the identity and character” of the town.

So now what happens? Lindsay explained she must provide notice to the province within 30 days. After that we are hoping applications can be made for funding for interpretive signs to be placed in the town. High on our wish list is to get RDOS to turn the Granite Creek ghost town into a park, however, that will be a massive undertaking which could take years to complete.

For right now we can all rejoice in the fact that our 1885 ghost town called Granite Creek has offi-cially been recognized as an historic place.

Garden trends Terracotta, wood, and warm tones are all the rage

Plastic is out; long live terracotta! That is a pretty accurate summary of the trends that will shape the 2013 gardening season. Green, as in environmental and natural, is everywhere. With eco-friendly design in the spotlight, the yard is being transfor med into an outdoor room where all the family loves to hang out.

Fun, food, and relaxationThe infatuation with cocooning or outdooring,

or whatever else you’d like to call this phenomenon, is catching. People want to make the most of their homes and are organizing their yards so they can spend as much time there as possible, day as well as night. Outdoor kitchens and li ving areas are more popular than ever, and numerous products are in the stores to prove it. The beauty of outdoor furniture is remarkable, and the quality of the materials and fabrics, exceptional. Forget about those soaking wet cushions after a few drops of rain, or colours that fade with exposure to the sun!

Wood furniture is still popular for 2013. It can be elegant or rustic and it always fits perfectly with con-sumers concerned about the environment. Because wood is more expensive to buy and also requires upkeep, many people are turning towards synthetic rattan, a resin that can be recycled and that is often

mistaken for a natural fibre. The trend in colours for cushions and accessories

is turning towards warm to nes, such as red, poppy, lemon yellow, royal blue, or emerald green. These are the same colours that are dictating summer clothing fashions this year.

Pots here, there, and everywhereContainer planting, far from being a thing of the

past, is more popular than ever. Balcony gardens and urban vegetable plots are definitely in. Why? Because this type of gardening is ultra “green”. You can savour your own potted organic tomatoes, grow fresh herbs to sprinkle over your pasta, and plant fragrant native flowers in every nook and cranny. To stay in keeping with the latest trends, pots and containers should be made of terracotta, wood, or stone. These can be found in natural colours or in vibrant shades like the warm tones of your patio furniture. In the yard, pots decorate pathways and bring a touch of colour and warmth to the land-scape.

Speaking of landscaping, flowers that bloom all summer long are in great demand again this year. We’re talking about gardens that are in flower from spring to fall. Let yourself succumb to the charms of ornamental grasses, and you’ll be right in keeping with the trend.

Be greener than greenYou can never be green enough, or so they say.

For 2013 and into the future, opt for methods that save water and energy, such as rainwater recupera-tion, the installation of a drip irrigation system, and low-energy lighting. In other words, think first and foremost about the environment as you plan your garden and yard.

The trendiest balcony gardeners use pots and containers made of terracotta, wood, or stone.

For 2013, outdoor furniture is embellished with accessories in warm tones such as red, poppy, lemon yellow, royal blue, or emerald green.

SpotlightOPINION

VICTORIA – As she unveiled her new cabinet, Premier Christy Clark promised a “line-by-line” review of government spending to deliver a balanced budget this year.

Statements such as this would have more credibility if politicians subjected their own personal spending to the same scrutiny. That’s still not happening in B.C.

Expense accountability has come a long way in the last year, thanks mainly to the work of now-departed Auditor General John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. Chaired by the speaker and run by senior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it wanted with MLAs’ own expenses.

Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inac-curate bank records and inadequate management of the legislature gift shop and dining room. The operating budget of the legislature and constituencies runs to more than $60 million a year.

Now-retired speaker Bill Barisoff asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual allowance for each of the 85 constituency offices. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were verified, but constituency expenses were not, likely because these records weren’t kept either.

I’m not suggesting that there has been any misuse of public funds. The point is we don’t know, and the notion of an “honour system” for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable.

A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa. It has its own secretive committee called the Board of Internal Economy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Duffy’s housing claims under the red rug of the Senate chamber.

Duffy has lived in Ottawa for decades, first as a TV host and then senator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could

claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his principal residence. An audit has also found he was claiming living expenses in Ottawa while campaigning for the Conservatives back east. It turns out the key ingredient in an honour system is honour.

This mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the British Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, including construction of a “duck house” and maintenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle.

Many years ago, British MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid, and rather than create a pub-lic fuss by giving themselves a big raise, they would

be able to top it up by claiming up to 250 pounds at a time without receipts. Cheers!

You can imagine how well that worked out. As one observer put it, the system was not only open to abuse, it was actually designed for it.

Here in B.C., the next step is obvious. If you go to the website of Alberta Premier Alison Redford, you can easily find the link to her detailed expense reports, itemized for travel, meals, hotel rooms and so forth. Alberta cabinet ministers provide the same disclosure.

B.C. cabinet ministers’ travel expenses are now reported, but only as an occasional lump sum.

As a result of Doyle’s revelations last summer, B.C.’s Legislative Assembly Management Committee now meets in public, with tran-scripts of proceedings available. But MLA expenses are still not item-ized. Total expenditures are being reported on a quarterly basis, but with no detail to explain why some MLAs have much higher totals than others.

It’s time to sweep out the cobwebs.

Mystery Twins; Who are they? Check next weeks Spotlight for the answer.1) They were 2 1/2 years old when this was taken in 1997 2) After high school their father became a pilot. 3) The family lived on the Coalmont/Tulameen Road.Answer to the previous week: Inga Worthing

Well, at least she didn’t show up riding a Jet Ski.It’s a week since Premier Christy Clark announced

her choice of Westside-Kelowna, neighbour to the Penticton riding, as the place she would be running for a seat in legislature, after failing to win Vancouver-Point Grey in the May 14 election.

Since Wednesday, there’s already lots of negative commentary about her choice. But politics aside, it was a near inevitable choice. The Central Okanagan is a stronghold for the Liberals, and has provided two of the province’s longest serving premiers — W.A.C. Bennett and his son Bill — whom Clark was quick to try to identify herself with.

After losing Point Grey, Clark had no choice but to choose the safest riding possible to run in. And with Ben Stewart willing to step aside gracefully after tak-ing Westside-Kelowna with 58 per cent of the vote, it would be hard to imagine a more suitable riding.

What remains to be seen is whether having the premier in an Okanagan riding will benefit the area. In the past, the valley has benefitted from having a strong caucus within the caucus — the so called Okanagan caucus. Even if you don’t share the conservative ide-ology, it would be hard to discount the work done by Rick Thorpe and Bill Barisoff who, working together with other Okanagan MLAs, managed to make sure many needed and beneficial projects for the valley got pushed through the legislature.

The first test for the new Okanagan caucus will be the expansion of Penticton Regional Hospital. Promises abounded during the election that this project was going to move forward, especially from Clark, who pledged to remove any barriers to the long delayed and badly needed project.

The question is, will Clark work with her fellow Okanagan MLAs to fast track the project, or will she act first as premier and chose whichever politically expedient path presents itself?

Choice of seat inevitable

Reverend John Goodfellow honouredDear Editor,A sincere thank you is due to Area ̀ H` Director,

Brad Hope and Ms. Anne Hazlewood, Area Manager, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure for the placement of signs marking Goodfellow Creek on the Hope Princeton high-way in Manning Park.

The creek was named after Reverend John C. Goodfellow D.D. (1890-1968) in the early 1950s by then-park ranger Robert Boyd. John Goodfellow resided in Princeton for many years and served as United Church Minister at St. Paul`s United from 1927 until his retirement in 1958. He was very active in the community with a special interest in local history, working closely with the BC Historical Society. In 1958 `The Story of Similkameen` was published and, although now out of print, it is still considered to be an accurate and well documented account of the valley`s timeline and events. The connection to Manning Park stems from a boys group that Rev. Goodfellow mentored through the church and each year he would lead them on a hike over the Dewdney Trail to Hope. He completed this nineteen times from 1927 to 1946. Goodfellow Creek was always a favourite stop for a drink of water by John Goodfellow in his later years, and it was surely reminiscent of his many hikes over the mountains there.

It is indeed an honour to have the creek marked with signs and this would not have been possible without the time and attention given by Mr. Hope and Ms. Hazlewood.

Again, many thanks for your efforts.Chris Goodfellow (Grandson)Coalmont, B.C.

Dear Sir,My concern with the Coalmont

Road, is that a very narrow, moun-tainous by-way, has become a major transportation corridor for large commercial vehicles, includ-ing b-trains. The Coalmont Energy Corp. mine and numerous logging companies use this route to trans-port their goods to market. This road was never designed for these huge, heavy trucks, the vehicles have a tendency to take up the whole road and even the shoulders on the curves(of which there are many). The edges of the road are breaking, crumbling and in many cases sinking and threatening to break away and slough off, down to the river. We need commerce and jobs, but we have to consider the infrastructure and the main-tenance of same, when encourag-

ing this type of activity. Do these company’s pay anything toward the maintenance of this road? Those of us that live beyond Coalmont and rely on the road for transportation for access to medical and access to ambulances, access to shopping, and all the other things required to sustain life, need this road. It is slowly becoming unusable due to the heavy traffic. It is also becom-ing  dangerous, as we never know what kind of monster truck will be just around the bend. This road needs to be up-graded, with proper signage, weight limits and mainte-nance. It needs to be widened( there is even one section that is one-way only) Let’s not wait until someone is killed, to address this problem.

PXA grounds get lit right up

Lisa [email protected]

For the past year and a half, The Princeton Exhibition Association (PXA) has been work-ing diligently to organize and initiate a five year plan for maintaining and upgrading of the PXA Grounds. With the assistance of Councillor Jason Earle - town liaison, the group was successful in creating the plan. “Jason is an asset, said Paul Bedard, PXA president, “he was instrumental in getting us organized.”

Upon hearing their direction during the 2012 Annual General Meeting, Area H Director Brad Hope set himself to work to find a way to assist the group of volunteers.

With thanks to the dedication and hard work of Director Hope and the cooperation of the Town of Princeton, a grant of $30,000 was pre-sented to the PXA.

One of the major issues for the PXA has been the cost of power for many years. The grant has been applied to changing over all the aging lights/fixtures to that of new energy efficient lighting.

Hayes Creek Electric was contracted to do the work and has done, “a great job.” Bedard adds his commendation to vice president Danny Kastor. “Danny really got things going with Brad and Jim—you folks have rolled up your sleeves and really made it happen,” he said.

“Our group (the PXA) works very well togeth-er,” said Kastor, “We have many projects under-way and a great deal of support.”

We have a great relationship and arrangement with the Town of Princeton, Jody Woodford working to repair barns, Mike Grgich working on grandstand (also loaning his equipment for other work on grounds) All Purpose Roofing crew has replaced two roofs and Director Hope has given us the lighting—explains Kastor.

Hope was pleased to assist with the lighting upgrade. “It’s good work,” he said, “and I cer-tainly appreciate the diligence of the PXA.”

Greg Palmar, Jim and Todd(not in photo) Barnes of Hayes Creek Electric, PXA president Paul Bedard, Mayor Frank Armitage, Area H Director Brad Hope and PXA vice president Danny Kastor are all pleased with the major improve-ment to the lighting in the Ag Barn and other areas on the PXA grounds.

The commemoration of a partnership

Krankin’ Vintage celebrates 6th Anniversary

This 59’ Chevy Parkwood demonstrates how camping was done in the good-ole-days...“This brings back memories,” said Folk as he reminisced about “Uncle Mike, Aunt Dorothy and the kids during a camping trip when I was about five.”—”This set up reminds me of them.”

On June 1, Randy Folk owner/operator of Krankin’ Vintage Restoration celebrated his 6th anniversary in business by rescuing 30 cars from the “crusher” and showing a few of them in his annual car show.

Classic was the theme for this years show and featured a ‘53 Pontiac Chieftain, ‘67 Dart, Gouda and Ford Galaxie, a’66 Meteor and ‘73 Dodge Scamp.

Visitors to the car show were treated to a bar-becue lunch as well as baked goodies from the Princeton Dollar Store Bakery.

Krankin’ Vintage specializes in “bumper to bumper” auto repairs and welcomes all ICBC claims and repairs. The ICBC adjuster visits Princeton on Wednesdays.

The folks at Krankin’ send out a big thanks to all those who came to take in the car show and an extra special thanks to the Princeton Dollar Store Bakery for their support.

In celebration of partnership and giving back to the environment and community, a commemorative tree planting afternoon with representatives of the Mitsui Homes/Weyerhaeuser partnership took place on Friday, June 7, at a community forest site up China Creek Road.

Looking back on accomplishments and work-ing together to forge ahead plans for the future are components of a great partnership. Celebrating such a partnership are Mitsui Homes Canada Inc., and Princeton Weyerhaeuser.

On June 18, 2009 representatives from both companies came together to celebrate their suc-cess by sharing in a tree planting excursion up on Snowpatch Road, where they planted over 600 trees.

The tree planting takes place to give the rep-resentatives of Mitsui Homes the opportunity to understand the work that goes into reforesting B.C., and to give all participants the opportunity to give back to the environment and community.

On June 7, 2013, Mitsui Homes and Weyerhaeuser representatives joined forces again in a sharing of information session at the mill site and to perform a commemorative tree planting up on China Creek Road.

Hiroshi Kuratsu - president, Takayoshi Fujitake

– executive vice president, Shohei Matsumoto – general manager, Linda Morita, Rosemarie Catenaccio, Pieter Dippenaar, Reynaldo Gopez and Daniel Parker of Mitsui Homes joined Weyerhaeuser employees; Jeff Larsen – general manager, Denis Thibert – products supply man-ager, Bill Gysel – export sales manager, Chris Pemberton – Timberlands consultant and Ed Collins in the day of learning, teaching and cel-ebration.

“Mitsui Homes is a pioneer in construction in Japan,” said Bill Gysel - export sales manager for Weyerhaeuser, “They are the largest builder of 2x4 construction.”

President of Mitsui Homes, Hiroshi Kuratsu said that “Weyerhaeuser is our most important supporter.” He explained that the housing mar-ket in Japan was booming - 26 percent higher in April of 2013 than in April 21012. “We need your stable supply,” he added with a smile.

Kuratsu also said that Canada was very quick to react to aid Japan after the Tsunami. Weyerhaeuser gave 1/2 a million dollars—a huge donation, “We are very grateful,” he said.

CAPRICORN: Capricorn, changes at home are in store and you may be feeling both excited and anxious at the same time. This is perfectly understandable as you await the news.

AQUARIUS: Aquarius, vacation plans may have been elusive until now, but you finally have the funds and the time to take the trip you desire. Your traveling partner is still up in the air.

PISCES: Pisces, a new season inspires you to make changes and reconsider old relationships. Call it a late spring cleaning of your life.

ARIES: You could be feeling under the weather this week, Aries. Even if your to-do list is a mile long, you need to take some time to recuperate before getting back to business.

TAURUS: Life experience is your advantage, Taurus. When your company is looking to fill a position, they will most likely hire from within. Make the most of this opportunity.

GEMINI: Gemini, just when things seem hopeless, a small ray of light shines through and you find a solution to your problem. Scorpio has some wise words, so listen up.

CANCER: Cancer, once you think you have all of the answers, something pops up to make you reassess a situation. It could take a few days for you to find the answer you’re looking for.

LEO: Leo, you may have fun in the sun on your mind, but others are urging you to buckle down and focus on some tasks that need to get wrapped up before you leave.

VIRGO: There are some changes coming at work, Virgo. You just don’t know if they will be to your advantage or be something that could tilt you off your axis.

LIBRA: Libra, you have much to learn, but you cannot cram it all into one week. There is no crash course on life. Make the most of a getaway opportunity.

SCORPIO: You can’t seem to focus on one thing for very long this week, Scorpio. You might have to spend a few days clearing your mind before you can refocus on the tasks at hand.

SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarius, you are not one to let an obstacle block you from your goal. Rethink your strategy and you will soon find yourself back on the path to success.

Flatiron Steak and tomatoeS With anchovy

vinaigretteServes 4

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil6 anchovy fillets packed in olive oil1 clove garlic, minced Pinch of crushed red pepper2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon red

wine vinegar1 flatiron steak, 1 pound Kosher salt and freshly ground

black pepper2 large, ripe tomatoes

Prepare and light a charcoal grill for cook-ing.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a 6-inch skillet over low heat. Add the ancho-vies and break up with a wooden spoon.

Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until the ancho-vies become aromatic. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper and cook for about 2 minutes, or until the garlic is cooked through but not browned. Remove from the heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of the vinegar. Set aside.

When the grill is at its hottest (when the coals are red and glowing and too hot to hold your hand over the grill for more than a couple of sec-

onds), season the steak on both sides with salt and pepper. Place the steak on the cooking grate directly over the coals and cook uncov-ered, turning once, for 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium rare; the timing will depend on the thickness of the steak. Transfer to a cut-ting board and let rest of 5 minutes.

Slice the tomatoes and arrange in the center of a serving platter. Drizzle with the

remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and the remaining 1 teaspoon vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Slice the steak thinly across the grain and arrange over the tomatoes. Pour the anchovy vinaigrette over the top of the steak. Serve. PC126213

The Erris Fire Hall build site located at 2254 Princeton Summerland Road was a-buzz with activity the weekend of May 30 to June 2. Once the concrete slab was cured, walls went up and the installation of roof trusses soon followed. When completed, the Fire Hall will be able to accommodate two fire trucks and a first responder vehicle.  The finishing touches of roofing, siding and bay doors are scheduled in the next few weeks. Pictured at right are:Top row: Dave Stringfellow, Joe Tosczak & Chris WillingOn the ladder:  Wayne Ross (Project Team Leader)Bottom row:  Debbie Blue, Rick Lawlor, Corinne Stringfellow, Rick Freeman and Rick Blue

In a shameless bid for sympathy, I am about to describe to you the trials of plein aire painting, that is, painting directly from nature. It sounds like such a lovely idea to be in the midst of perfect nature, intoxicated with your prospects. And it truly is, but you can’t just stand there forever, so you focus on the job at hand.

That means unloading your portable (?) sixteen and a half pound easel from the car as well as twenty more pounds of paraphernalia including a stool, you won’t use it - ten colors of paint, you only need six for plein aire - a half gallon of water, - what were you thinking?—Then lugging the works up a hill, it’s always up - to be in the perfect spot.

Well. There it is. You have before you the million dollar view, and you need to decide which part of all this you will choose as your composition. To do this you need to pace back and forth, measuring and frowning. It’s very hard to settle sometimes. Finally, you arrive at a decision.

The easel is set up in a suitable spot. After a few false starts whereby the easel col-lapses drunkenly and then is restored to attention, you squeeze out paint onto the palette and take up your favorite brush. The white canvas, firmly attached, glows expectantly at you and just as you move forward with said brush, a wasp begins to circle your head. He has friends and he’s brought them to you for a look-see. In silent panic you try not to smell like fear and you will them to buzz off and leave you alone. They inspect the

dabs of paint, check the brush, do one more run around you at nose level and then casually fly off.

Suddenly, you are very thirsty. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea after all to bring all that water. After a good long pull on the water bottle you begin. Forgetting your very recent torment, you block out your composition, lay down your values starting with the darks.

Next, you add color, mood and mystery. You’re in the zone now and things are looking fine. You’ve managed to stay within your original com-position, maybe moving a rock a little to the left or a tree to the right. It’s working. Right about this time you begin to twitch a bit around the eyes but you’re grooving now and it’s no big deal. As you wind things up, the skin around your eyes is beginning to itch. Really itch. You realize that while you were in the zone, little black flies were behind your glasses, helping themselves to your skin. Why there for heaven’s sakes you ask? There are so

many other parts of you they could have dined on. You manage to get packed up and to drive home before your eyes become little tiny slits through which you can barely make out your day’s work. By now you’re feeling persecuted by Mother Nature and her little flying friends and not quite sure if you should have made her look so good. But you know what? When you can see again, you’ll be right back out there, doing it once more.

What’s really crazy is, so will I! See you then!

ARTI-FACTSMERRILYN HUYCKE

Persecuted by Mother Nature, but it is worth it

In Loving Memory of Marilyn McKenzie

October 22, 1932 ~ June 10, 2012

We did not know that morning,What sorrow the day would bring. The bitter grief and shock severe,To part with one we love so dear.

You bid no one last farewell,No chance to say good-bye.

You were gone before we knew it,Only God knows why.

It broke our hearts to lose you,But you did not go alone,

For part of us went with you,The day God called you home.

Though your smile is gone forever,And your hand we cannot touch,We will never lose the memory,Of the one we loved so much.

Love your Sisters & Brothers
