Similarity and Congruency,Scaling Up and Scaling Down.Introduction to Developing Floor Plan Models

Objectives: By the end of the lesson you will be able to construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationship between them.

Lesson DescriptionYou will have two weeks to complete this assignment. You will learn how to use Excel to create floor plans. The major part of the assignment is to create a scaling up or down model of a floor plan in Excel. In total you will create three floor plans.

Lesson Guidelines

Download the PDF file with instructions on completing the project. Right click on the document and open the file, then print the Guidelines .

Scaling UP and Scaling down

Guidelines

This project has several components. You are expected to create three floor plans. The first floor plan is a model plan to get you familiar with Excel. The second and third floor plans are created for your final project. You are to complete an Activity page on BrainPop and a Quiz after watching a short movie on ratio and proportion. Review the PowerPoint video which can be found on Edmodo and on Slide Share In your final project you have to measure the rooms of your home and create a floor plan of one level of your home in Excel. You can choose the level, however, the floor plan must include at least rooms, a closet can count as a room for this assignment. Read over these Guidelines for detailed instructions and have fun. Ask your family for help.

1. Use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of each room in your home located on one floor.

2. Create a sketch of the floor plan to use when creating an Excel spreadsheet. 3. Each cell in the spreadsheet should be used to represent 2 feet. Use pixels of 48

which correspond to 0.50 inches. 4. (Optional) Color code the rooms by using the paint bucket feature. 5. Include the measurement of each room on the floor plan and determine the total

square footage of one floor. 6. Label each room as living room, dining room etc. also include the area of each

room 7. Your family is rebuilding your original home after it got destroyed by a natural

disaster and decided to build it bigger so that every room is enlarged by the same scale factor or must reduce the size by the same scale factor.

8. Create another floor plan that demonstrates the scaling up or scaling down. The pixel are still at 48 and the corresponds to 0.50 inches

9. Explain in writing the scale factor from the old home to the new home and how you made your calculations. (create a word document)

10. Create a comparison between the total sq footage of the original home to the new home. ( include in the word document)

11. Send the Excel and Word documents to your teachers e-mail account by the due date. (label the Excel document and word document with your name)

Genius Bar

You can also get assistance from the Genius Bar in the computer lab after school on Monday thru Wednesday from 1:45 pm until 3:00pm during the timeline of this project. You can also ask for assistance by logging into your Edmodo account and asking the Genius Staff remotely any Excel related questions that you have. You can expect the last reply by 9:00 pm Mon thru Fri.

How to Create a Floor Plan in Excel

1) Open a blank Excel spreadsheet. 2) Click on the box to the left of Column A to select all cells. 3) Click on any of the vertical lines that separate two columns and start dragging left or right.

4) A tooltip will display on screen, noting the width in pixels- refer only to the number of pixels 5) Set the pixel to a width of 48 pixels (which equals 0.5 inches). When you stop dragging, all

columns will be set to the width of 48 pixels. 6) Click on the horizontal lines and do the same thing, setting the number of pixels at 48. All rows

will be stretched or reduced. 7) Click on View and select page layout and you will have a ruler on the left pane that can be used

to measure the width of the cells. 8) Click Page Layout and select a scale of 50% 9) Create a rectangular box with the dimensions of 10 feet wide by 20 feet long and create a

border around the box. (review YouTube video at time 2:54) 10) Create a recess in the top right hand corner of the floor plan that is 2 feet wide by 5 feet long. (

review the YouTube video at time 4:20) 11) Create a recess in the bottom right hand corner of the floor plan that is 2 feet wide by 5 feet

long. ( review YouTube video at time 6:02) Create an opening that is two feet wide by three feet long in the top section of the floor plan (Review YouTube video at time 6:57)

12) Let 0.50 inches = 5 feet. Give the dimensions of the floor plan in feet and inches. 13) Name your Floor Plan and send the Floor Plan to your teacher via e-mail
