Similar Characteristics of my pop magazines
(Font covers)
I have noticed that both magazines follow convention when considering the layout anddesign of the magazine. Both of the main images are very much so dominated by the cover
lines and text which works well, giving the audience many different angels of the magazine
to find attractive. Also if the magazines where not to follow convention here is a possibility
that they would look unprofessional, becoming distasteful to the audience.
I can also see that both the magazines have adopted a house style. Top of the pops has gonefor a pink, purple and black colour system and we love pop has gone for an orange, black
and white colour system. By the magazines doing this it shows that the magazine is
consistent, suggesting to the audience that the magazines content will be consistent in its
topic of pop. However the colours used have different connotation which would make the
audience approach the magazines in different ways. The colours used in top of the pops are
stereotypically very feminine and pretty. By doing this the female audience would approach
the magazine like they would a fellow girlfriend, expecting the magazine to be female driven
with predominantly female music artist. However we love pop has chosen the colour
orange. This has connotations of anger and fire which could be seen to link to the audiencesview of the male model as being hot. By doing this it suggests to the audience that the
magazine will focus on the likeability and attractiveness of males.
Both magazines have got a masthead to give their magazine a name. Both magazines seemto have enlarged their mastheads in order to attract the audience eye, making them
subconsciously remember the masthead thus allowing them to tell other about the
magazine. I can also see that both mastheads are in bold, making them stand out from the
surrounding text. On the other hand we love pop has decided to place its masthead to the
far left which could be seen as developing convention. By doing this it makes the audience
focus on the model, thus supporting my idea of the magazine promoting itself by showing
images that would attract female attention.
Both magazines also have a main image however we love pop has chosen a male whereastop of the pops has chosen a female. By doing this it creates different meaning. It could be
said that by top of the pops using a female it emphasizes female empowerment, attracting
the audience this way whereas we love pop has used a male to give the audience some eye
candyattracting them this way. However I can see that both the magazines have used a
medium shot, allowing the audience to see the artist close up.
Both magazines also have a footer that are of the same topic. The only difference here isthat we love pop has chosen to use images which is in my opinion are more effective as
sometimes people can forget who people are from their names, but when they see a picturethey can figure out who it is quite quickly.
Both of the magazines language is informal. This is effective as commonly the younger targetaudience are more inclined to use this language when interacting with others, making the
magazines seem approachable and friendly.
Both magazines have chosen to go with a white background. By doing this it makes theaudience focus on the main image and surrounding text, making them attracted to the
magazine due to the persuasive language used in the cover lines and the striking appearance
of the models.
