TRANSCRIPT
During this season of
Thanksgiving and Christ-
mas and the busy holiday
season I would like to say
thank you to the Mayville
community and surrounding
areas for the confidence you
have shown in Luther
Memorial Home. In Sep-
tember we welcomed our
2,000 resident to Luther
Memorial Home. Thank
you for the opportunity and
the trust you have in us to
care for you or your loved
one. We also had 268 ten-
ants in Sun Center Apart-
ments since it was opened
in 1984. We started with
only 9 apartments, added 16
in 2000, and another 16 in
2005. We have maintained
a constant occupancy
throughout those years.
This is another sign of the
confidence you have in our
facility.
The North Dakota De-
partment of Health was here
in August for our annual
survey of the Medicare and
Medicaid programs. They
spent a week inspecting all
areas, jotting notes and talk-
ing with both residents and
staff. I am pleased to say
that Luther Memorial Home
received 5 minor deficien-
cies, all of which have been
corrected. LMH continues
to be rated as a 5-Star facili-
ty which is the highest rat-
ing available.
The Fire Marshall also
paid a visit in July and
found zero deficiencies.
This is an example of the
fine work our staff does in
maintaining our high stand-
ard here at Luther Memorial
Home. Hats off to our fan-
tastic staff!
I would like to
acknowledge with deep
appreciation the $10,000
donation Luther Memorial
Home received from the
estate of Jo Ewen. Knowing
how much Jo enjoyed the
outdoors and gardens we
used part of the donation to
buy permanent lawn fix-
tures for the courtyard. Our
residents certainly enjoy
going outside during the
spring and summer months
and the furniture is a nice
addition.
Donald and Ardyce
Newman also bequeathed
$45,000 to Luther Memori-
al Home from the Newman
remainder trust. A portion
will be used as an ongoing
scholarship for the nursing
students at Mayville State
University. My sincere
thanks to these individuals
for thinking of Luther Me-
morial Home with their be-
quests. These donations will
certainly make a difference
in the quality of life for our
residents and future nursing
students. Again, thank you.
We will face many chal-
lenges with the State Legis-
lature in the upcoming year.
The State of North Dakota
will be cutting our rates by
$500,000 per year in fund-
ing starting in January
2017. We have been work-
ing closely with our three
State Legislatures and have
assurances they will make
our needs known to the new
Governor. Without this
funding, Luther Memorial
Home will certainly lose
hundreds of thousands of
dollars. This cut will affect
all of us and we are looking
for ways to cut our budget
without jeopardizing our
quality of care. Rest
assured, quality of care is
not an area that we will
compromise.
As the Christmas season
approaches we will be hav-
ing our annual Hanging of

the Greens on Sunday, De-
cember 4th. Families are
invited to help residents
decorate their rooms and to
participate in the Tree of
Lights & Dedication. There
will be refreshments and
special music by Noel Kan-
gas and Lesley Buegel.
You may purchase a dedi-
cation angel ornament for
the Tree of Lights either at
LMH front reception desk,
from Activity Department
or by completing and mail-
ing form at the back of this
newsletter to LMH. It
is a wonderful way to
acknowledge a loved one.
We look forward to seeing
you on December 4th.
May you all have a
wonderful and blessed
Christmas season and a
special thank you to all
the staff that make Luther
Memorial Home such an
exceptional place to be.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN - Nathan Strong
The holidays are soon
upon us. We shall gather
together rushing around to
make sure that everything is
so perfect and that we have
everything that we want.
Yet in the midst of this
rushing and anxiety, we can
miss the people that are
truly at the heart of the
holidays. We may think of
the food and the presents
but it is truly the people that
are the gifts that we have
this year and the memories
that we share throughout the
whole year.
Once a year, we are
called to do that as a nation
on Thanksgiving. While this
is a national holiday, it can
help us as Christians and
families as well. You can
gather together and perhaps
share what is on your list:
1. List one thing that
you are glad you have.
(This is something that you
can buy.)
2. List one thing that
you are glad you have.
(This is something that you
cannot buy.)
3. Think of one person
who is family who you are
thankful for. Talk to them
and thank them.
4. Think of one person
who is not a family member
who you are thankful for.
Now write them a thank
you.
5. Thinking of the next
year, what would you like
to do (by yourself).
6. Thinking of the next
year, what would you like
to do as a family (include as
much of your family as you
are able).
7. Thinking of next year,
what do you feel God is
calling you to do.
Yet when we gather for
Christmas, may you cherish
the gift of the people that
surround and God who gave
you this gift of life. As we
continue on this journey of
life and faith, may you

“what is my name?” or say
“do you remember me?”
Because this can become
stressful for the resident as
they actually can’t remem-
ber. The resident may be
upset when they realize
they didn’t remember their
family or a friend. Bring
something with you to look
at such as old family pic-
tures. Someone with de-
mentia may not remember
what happened yesterday,
but they can recall things
from years ago. Most of all
smile, spend time, and lis-
ten to their stories even if
you have heard them a 100
times before because there
will come a day you won’t
hear those stories
again.

we were blessed with
some very nice new
youth volunteers,

Do you find visiting resi-
dents at a nursing home a
challenge? Do you struggle
with what to say? Our resi-
dents love to have visitors;
they love to hear about your
family, current events and
things going on in the com-
munity. Some of our resi-
dents have dementia, they
may repeat themselves, or
they may not recognize
their family. This can be
very difficult. I would like
to share with you a bit of
what we reviewed at a
recent conference. One sug-
gestion for these times is to
greet the resident by their
name and tell them your
name. Please don’t ask,

With Thanksgiving and
Christmas just around the
corner, please take time to
remember your family and
friends with a phone call,
e-mail, a letter, pictures, or
just stop by for a cup of cof-
fee and share some conver-
sation, stories and enjoy the
moment. The coffee is
always on.

As holiday gift
giving begins,
please remem-
ber that all
clothing items should be
marked with your loved
ones’ first and last name.
Blank name tags and pins
are located inside each
resident’s closet for easy
labeling. If the item needs
to be tried on before it can
be marked, please let their
caregiver know so they can

mark it after it has been
tried on. Every year we
have so many beautiful
items that come through the
laundry unmarked. Items
are unable to be claimed
because no one recognizes
who they belong to. Please
help us make sure your
loved ones are able to enjoy
their gift (s) you have given
them by marking their name
on clothing items. FYI: We
have found that fleece items

do not tolerate the heat in
the dryers well and the gar-
ments become scratchy, so
for your loved one’s com-
fort it is best to avoid this
type of fabric.
A reminder regarding
holiday decorations:
1. NO live or real Christ-
mas trees or wreaths are
allowed anywhere in the
facility. Artificial trees and
wreaths may be permitted
if they are UL listed for
flame retardency.
2. For residents residing
in Meadowlark Lane we ask
that family not bring live
poinsettias or any other
plants/flowers as many can
be harmful if ingested.
3. No extension cords or
power strips are allowed.
Have a safe and joyous
holiday season!!!

Cherished Hopes provides a
“Fun in Life” experience for
LMH Resident
“I wish I could take my
mom and sister to dinner
when she is here visiting me
from Maine” - that was the
simple wish of LMH resident
Delberta Rossignol. So Lisa
Del on the ride to Grand
Forks while Molly Lenaburg
drove.
Everyone had a wonderful
time enjoying different din-
ner entrees and desserts at the
Red Lobster. Del came home
with several boxes of lefto-
vers and two bags of those
delicious cheese biscuits. She
said she was looking forward
to enjoying them the next
day. Del said making this
wish come true was
“Absolutely the Best”. The
big smile on her face certain-
ly indicated that was true.
The activities staff and
Cherished Hopes are happy
that we could be a part of
Del’s a “Fun in Life” experi-
ence. Anyone wishing to do-
nate to Cherished Hopes can
do so through the activities
office at LMH. It is a nice
way to make someone else’s
day a little brighter.
Hanson Transitions to North Dakota Center for
Nursing Board of Directors Presidency
Julie Hanson, RN, BSN, recently transitioned into
her new role as President of the North Dakota Center
for Nursing’s Board of Directors. Hanson previously
served as President-Elect and prior, Secretary on the
Center for Nursing’s Board. As President, Hanson
will serve for two years.
Hanson, Director of Nursing at Luther Memorial
Home in Mayville, North Dakota, says she is both
excited and honored to serve as the Center’s Presi-
dent.
“I am greatly honored to be stepping into this new leadership role,” says
Hanson. “The North Dakota Center for Nursing has grown tremendously
over its past five years and accomplished so much for our nursing communi-
ty. With so many exciting endeavors in the near future, I couldn’t be happi-
er to continue moving the Center forward as President. I’m really proud of
our work and am really excited to see what the future has in store.”
The ND Center for Nursing was created in 2011 as a centralized coordi-
nating organization for North Dakota’s nursing community. The mission of
the North Dakota Center for Nursing is to guide the ongoing development of
a well-prepared and diverse nursing workforce to meet the needs of the citi-zens of North Dakota through research, education, recruitment and reten-
tion, advocacy and public policy.
