Powering the Future
IEEE 802.3bt Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard more than doubles PoE power
90 W PoE expands the capabilities of wireless access points and IoT gateways
Higher power also makes PoE powered 5G small cells and digital buildings a reality
Silicon Labs new 802.3bt portfolio simplifies 90 W PoE with industry leading
PSEs and PDs

PoE Applications
Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)
Enterprise & SMB switches
iPBX voice switches
Lighting control systems
Inline Power Injectors/Midspans
Powered Devices (PDs)
VoIP phones
Wireless Access Points
IP security (cameras, entry systems)
Lighting/Luminaires
Silicon Labs powers both ends of the Ethernet cable from 15 to 90 W
5
PoE is a great choice for when power and data are needed at a device connected to an Ethernet switch
Power and data are injected at the Source (PSE) and delivered to the PD through an Ethernet cable
PoE lowers total installation cost and simplifies wiring using standard Ethernet cables

Why UART on the Si34071 PD?
802.3bt defines 8 power classes granted by the PSE
PD system must determine the power granted from the PSE and adjust power draw accordingly
Competitor parts require 3 digital pins on the PD to communicate the received class to the system
Si34071’s UART requires only two low cost opto couplers or a single Si8621 to provide the same information
Si34071 UART port register map includes
Class granted by PSE
Enable or disable MPS (low power mode)
Si34071 autoclass configuration
