2WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE UTAH MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

This has been a landmark year at 20 S. West Temple, and we are thrilled that you are joining us in the celebration that brings the year to a close. At the end of our 80th year, we are happy to report that our new name, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, has been well-received by the community and has provided much-needed clarity about our mission and offerings. Just two years ago, our total audience was 19,000 people; this year, we broke 100,000. Our programming has received critical accolades from the nation’s leading funder of contemporary art, the Andy Warhol Foundation, which awarded UMOCA the largest two-year support grant given to any arts organization in the country in 2011. Locally, we were honored to be recognized as Utah’s Best Museum for the second year in a row by the Best of State organization.

Tonight we are providing you with a sneak peek at two exhibitions—organized by our new Senior Curator Aaron Moulton—that will not be seen by the public for several days yet. In our Main Gallery, Cantastoria explores the continuing role of contemporary artists as the bards of our age, communicating our histories and cultures through languages, song, storytelling, and lyricism. The exhibition features works by a panoply of artists from Utah and around the world. In our New Genres Gallery, you have an opportunity to enjoy the United States museum premiere of Christian Jankowski’s Casting Jesus, a wonderfully-nuanced, poignant, and ultimately bittersweet exploration of faith and the human institutions (religious and cultural) that sustain it. Jankowski’s work has been featured at both the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial. (For those who are intrigued by Casting Jesus, on July 19, 2012, we will be hosting a panel discussion exploring the themes of the work with Rita Wright, Chief Curator of the LDS Church History Museum.)

And, of course, there is tonight’s party. Organized by Trustee Gary Vlasic and an unwavering committee of volunteers, our evening’s festivities offer you the opportunity to purchase some truly amazing items in our silent, art, and live auctions, enjoy an astounding assortment of food and beverage as part of a tented dinner in our courtyard, be astonished by a live performance courtesy of SB Dance, and dance until you drop with DJ Jesse Walker. In short, you are in for one heck of an evening as we launch UMOCA boldly into the coming year.

Thank you for supporting the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. None of this would be possible without you.

SILENT ART AUCTION

Forty of Utah’s most talented and collectable artists have created paintings

exclusively for the UMOCA silent auction.

Creating an element of surprise, this year’s paintings will be presented with the

names of the participating artists concealed. Not until the end of the evening

will each Silent Art Auction winner learn which artists they will be adding to

their collection. Will you be able to identify the creations of established Utah

artists whose works routinely command tens of thousands of dollars? Or will

you pick pieces by emerging artists destined to lead the Utah art community in

years to come?

The Silent Art Auction opens at 6:00 PM and closes promptly at 8:00 PM.

MAKE A SMART INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF UTAH’S ARTISTIC COMMUNITY

In addition to our world-class exhibitions, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art also supports the

growth of Utah’s artists at every stage of development. You may not realize it, but UMOCA offers a

range of services to our artistic community, including:

• Holding free, hands-on art-making projects for young children

• Conducting intensive programs for at-risk youth who show creative promise

• Offering paid commissions for original work by Utah artists

• Providing artist support services, such as access to legal advice and portfolio reviews

• Building a sense of community with social gatherings for artists

• Creating early opportunities for solo exhibitions in our new Locals Only Gallery

• Arranging exhibitions of Utah artists out-of-state to help bring them to the attention of other art

markets

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art is there, every day, helping to build Utah’s creative

community and to ensure that Utah—your home—will be the source of some of America’s richest

culture in decades to come. Please support us in our efforts.

“I can never thank you enough for the opportunity you gave me as an eighteen year old nobody,

unskilled, untrained, having nothing but a level of curiosity in art. [UMOCA’s programs] really lit a

fire inside me and I haven’t looked back since. It gave me a direction that my life really needed at the

time. Currently I am set to get my BFA in Printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

this coming May.”—Chase Sperry, Utah artist

“[The new direction at UMOCA] promises exciting times ahead, a fresh point of view and broad vision...guaranteeing future innovation and a sense of humor previously absent from the Salt Lake art scene.” –Salt Lake Magazine

“[UMOCA’s] metamorphosis...is a momentous event for our community.” –Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon

“UMOCA is at an exciting moment in its history; its new leaders are ambitious in their vision for its programs and exhibitions and committed to deepening connections with the local, national, and international contemporary art community.” –The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts

31TESTIMONIALS

“The space [at UMOCA] is absolutely beautiful and the exhibitions there...were quite compelling. But I think what impressed me the most was the energy of the place. It reminded me a lot of the Hammer Museum, which I believe is the best art venue in LA. They both seem to avoid the distancing of art and public that can be so stifling. I really loved it and will go back.” –Susan Narduli, visiting artist

“In the current bid of art organizations everywhere to redefine their mission, connect with the public in new ways, and yet still promote art with all the earnestness that mission entails, it is apparent to almost anyone that [UMOCA] has hit a hole-in-one.” –Salt Lake Tribune
