SPONSORED INVESTIGATION No. FSV 1530A FIRE-RESISTANCE TEST ON A NON-LOADBEARING
VERTICAL SEPARATING ELEMENT
SUMMARY IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIMEN:
The sponsor identified the specimen as a non-load-bearing 75-mm thick Sigma Panel(M Panel) Wall System.
SPONSOR: M PANEL PTY LTD C301/3 Avenue of Europe Newington NSW MANUFACTURER: SOOVEE (H.K.) LIMITED
Hongmao, Sanshe Village, Guankou Town, jimmied District Xiamen China
TEST STANDARD: Australian Standard 1530, Methods for fire tests on building
materials, components and structures, Part 4-2005, Fire-resistance tests of elements of construction.
TEST NUMBER: FS 4277/3542 TEST DATE: The fire-resistance test was conducted on 16 February 2012. DESCRIPTION OF SPECIMEN:
GENERAL
The specimen consisted of a panel wall system of overall nominal dimensions 3000-mm high x 3000-mm wide x 75-mm thick. The wall consisted of 3000-mm high x 900-mm wide x 75-mm thick vertical orientated panels, fixed on top and bottom by 1.5-mm thick steel channels through bolted at nominal 600-mm centres along the top and bottom. PANELS
The M Panel consisted of a 900-mm wide x 63-mm thick expanded polystyrene core (core density of 17.73 kg/m3), lined on both faces with a single layer of 6-mm thick magnesium oxide board (board density 179.2-kg/m3), glued to the core with Tian Ma Xing 601# glue. Each panel comprised tongue and groove profile joints along its vertical edges as shown in drawing titled “M Panel detail 2”, dated 27 February 2012, by Boss Design Pty Ltd.

INSTALLATION
The wall panels were fitted to the top and bottom steel channel as shown in drawing titled “M Panel detail 2”, dated 27 February 2012, by Boss design Pty Ltd. The first panel was fixed to the vertical edge with Vicoustic Flexi Glue. Subsequent panels as well as the first panel, were restrained along the top using steel channels, a 77-mm wide x 30-mm high x 1.5-mm thick channel along the head and a 65-mm wide x 1.5-mm thick along the bottom. The channels were bolted to the specimen containing frame at 600-mm centres. The 5-mm tongue and groove joints between panels were sealed with Vicoustic Flexi Glue. The resulting gaps along restrained edge, head and bottom of the wall were sealed flush on both sides with Vicoustic Flexi Glue. The resulting gap of 20-mm between the unrestrained edge of the wall and specimen containing frame was filled with ceramic fibre. ORIENTATION
The wall panel system was of symmetrical construction. DIMENSIONS
The wall specimen was nominally 3000-mm wide x 3000-mm high x 75-mm thick. All dimensions are nominal. RESTRAINTS
The specimen was unrestrained along one of the vertical edges. CONDITIONING
The specimen wall was left to cure for a period of 9 days.
DOCUMENTATION:
The following documents were supplied by the sponsor as a complete description of the specimen and should be read in conjunction with this report:
Drawing titled “M Panel detail 2”, dated 27 February 2012, by Boss Design Pty Ltd.
Confidential information about the test specimen has been submitted
and is retained at CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering. EQUIPMENT:
FURNACE
The furnace had a nominal opening of 3000-mm x 3000-mm for attachment of vertical specimens.

The furnace was lined with refractory bricks and materials with the thermal properties as specified in AS 1530.4-2005 and was heated by combustion of a mixture of natural gas and air.
TEMPERATURE
The temperature in the furnace chamber was measured by eight type K, 3-mm diameter, 310 stainless steel Mineral Insulated Metal Sheathed (MIMS) thermocouples. Each thermocouple was housed in high-nickel steel tubes opened at the exposed end.
The temperatures of the specimen were measured by glass-fibre
insulated and sheathed K-type thermocouples with a wire diameter of 0.5-mm.
Location of the thermocouples on the unexposed face of the specimen is shown in photograph 2.
PRESSURE
The furnace pressure was measured by a differential low-pressure transducer with a range of ± 50 Pa.
The pressure probe was located approximately 1000-mm above the sill of the furnace. MEASUREMENT SYSTEM
The primary measurement system comprised of multiple-channel data loggers, scanning at one minute intervals during the test.
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE:
The temperature of the test area was 22°C at the commencement of the test.
DEPARTURE FROM STANDARD:
There were no departures from the requirements of AS 1530.4-2005. TERMINATION OF TEST:
The test was terminated at 132 minutes by the agreement with the sponsor.

TEST RESULTS:
CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS
The following observations were made during the fire-resistance test:
5 minutes - Small amount of steam is being emitted from the head of the wall.
17 minutes - Cracks have developed along the joints.
Moisture is collecting along the joints.
30 minutes - Glue on the channel along the head of the wall is starting to fall off.
61 minutes - Insulation Failure – maximum temperature rise limit of 180K is exceeded by the thermocouple on the head of the specimen.
74 minutes - Joints are getting wider.
112 minutes - Moisture along the joints is drying out.
132 minutes - Integrity Failure – a gap wider than 6-mm and longer than 150-mm has developed along the left joint (photograph 5).
Test terminated.
FURNACE TEMPERATURE
Figure 1 shows the standard curves of temperature versus time for heating the furnace chamber and the actual curves of average and maximum temperature versus time recorded during the heating period.
FURNACE PRESSURE
Figure 2 shows the curve of average pressure versus time inside the furnace chamber recorded during the heating period.
SPECIMEN TEMPERATURE

PERFORMANCE
Performance observed in respect of the following AS 1530.4-2005 criteria:
Structural adequacy - not applicable Integrity - 132 minutes. Insulation - 61 minutes.
This report details methods of construction, the test conditions and the results obtained when specific element of construction described herein was tested following the procedure outlined in this standard. Any significant variation with respect to size, constructional details, loads, stresses, edge or end conditions, other than those allowed under the field of direct application in the relevant test method, is not covered by this report.
Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.
FIRE-RESISTANCE LEVEL (FRL):
For the purpose of building regulations in Australia, the FRL of the test specimen was -/120/60.
The fire-resistance level of the wall system is applicable when the
system is exposed to fire from either direction.
For the purposes of AS 1530.4-2005 the results of these fire tests may be used to directly assess fire hazard, but it should be recognised that a single test method will not provide a full assessment of fire hazard under all fire conditions.
APPLICATION OF TEST RESULTS: The results of the fire test contained in this test report are directly applicable, without reference to the testing authority, to similar constructions where one or more changes listed in Clause 3.8 of AS1530.4-2005, have been made provided no individual component is removed or reduced.
