Badger Region Operations Manager Ryan Thompson has been named the head men’s volleyball coach at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. His last day with the Region office was Friday.

Beach season has arrived — let’s playGraduation season is here. The

calendar says June. And with that comes your

short (and much anticipated) opportunities to get in some much-needed fun in the sun – and the beach and grass volley-ball that goes along with it.

The Badger Region is hosting two great events to help get your summer started right.

The first is the brand new Amer-ican Beach Tour stop that will take place June 11 at Center Court, 815 Northview Road in Wauke-sha. (Register for the Wisconsin’s Cheese Curd Classic at www.badgervolleyball.org.)

The second is the Junior Beach Tour stop June 17 and 18 at Center Court, too. (Register at www.usavolleyball.org and click on “Beach” then on “Junior Beach Tour” and finally on “Tour Schedule.”)

The June 11 ABT will all be on June 11. And then the JBT will have B12s, B14s, B16s, B18s, G12s and G18s on the first day of competi-

tion. G14s and G16s will be on the second day of competition. Cost breakdowns based on entry date are available on both registration pages.

Winners from the American Beach Tour will be invited to the Open Division of the Junior Cham-pionships July 26-28 at Hickory Point beach in Tavares, Fla. The ABT Tour Championships also feature an HP and Club Division for non-bid winners.

Winners from the Junior Beach Tour will receive bids to the Ju-nior Beach Tour Championships taking place in Siesta Key, Fla., July 20-25. A club division in this tournament is also available.

There are so many great bene-fits to playing outdoor volleyball.

The biggest being that the sport requires all the athletes on the court (whether it be two, three or four) to be able to do all aspects of the game — serving, hitting, passing, digging and blocking.

This forces players to develop their weaker skills and cover more court. It also involves reading your opponent more than indoor sport and controlling your shot more on offense.

And the sand really works your muscles — athletes will feel like they are jumping out of the gym once they go back indoors after doing some rigorous sand training.

Thanks to the success at the Olympic level, beach volleyball is exploding on national level with numerous colleges now offering

sand volleyball as an NCAA sport. Over 50 schools offer the sport in 2017.

Former Stanford University women’s coach John Dunning said in an interview with Art of Coaching Volleyball that he tells his athletes that if they learn to play sand volleyball, it’ll allow them to play longer as an athlete.

And he appreciates beach doubles and what they do for an athlete as an individual.

“People who only play six-per-son volleyball don’t understand what happens to a tennis player when they are by themselves,” he said. “Sand volleyball is close to that. If you make a mistake, everyone knows it.”

In the Badger Region, you can play in the sand and grass tournaments while not conflicting with your indoor club. They are recognized as two separate entities — meaning you can play for your indoor team and sign up to train or play beach volleyball with another organization or as an independent player.

spent eight years at West Allis Lightning as a boys coach for teams of various age levels, all of which qualified for the Open Di-vision of Boys Junior Nationals. In 2007, his team finished fifth in 15 Open, in 2013, his team finished third in 15 Open and in 2014, his team finished ninth in 16 Open.

Throughout his many years as a club volleyball coach, he has had five athletes named to the USAV All-Tournament team, three athletes named Fab 50 by Volleyball Magazine, three athletes named to the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team and two athletes named to the U.S. Boys Youth National Team.

Thompson is also a Carthage alum who played for the men’s team from 2004-2007. In both 2005 and 2007, his team finished runner-up at the Molten Div. 3

National Championships (as it was known before 2012). Also while at Carthage, Thompson’s team won the 2004 NIRSA Div. II championship for college club

teams in Charlotte, N.C.He also serves as a camp clini-

cian for Carthage College and has helped with the Badger Region and National High Performance programs. During the 2015 NCAA Women’s Division I Vol-leyball Season, he was a volunteer assistant coach at Marquette University, a team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth year in a row under head coach Ryan Theis.

A resident of Waukesha, Wis., Thompson also served four years at Arrowhead High School (Hartland, Wis.) as a JV and as a freshman coach. Until 2014, he was a Team Sales Representative at Burghardt Sporting Goods based in Brookfield, Wis.

Badger Region staff members Jen Armson-Dyer, Ryan Thompson, Sara Voigt, Brian Sharkey and Terry Paulson said goodbye to Thomp-son on Friday. Thompson recently accepted the head men’s coaching position at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

In Wisconsin, where the num-ber of days you can spend on the beach are limited, finding the op-portunity to play sand volleyball in great weather is like finding a needle in a haystack.

But the stars aligned in many ways for beach volleyball enthusi-asts on Wednesday, June 14.

As part of Olympic Day activ-ities that are taking place across the country in June and July, the Badger Region Volleyball Asso-ciation hosted a free, two-hour boys beach volleyball clinic on the shores of Lake Michigan in downtown Milwaukee.

There, 34 boys all between the ages of 10 and 16, were able to take advantage of the 80-degree weather and sunny skies above Bradford Beach.

“We had close to 45 kids sign up for the clinic, but when the weather is perfect in Wisconsin, people have a tendency to change plans and take advantage of a great day as best they can,” said Badger Region program director Brian Sharkey. “We would have had a couple more had the U.S. Open at Erin Hills not been tak-ing place right in our back yard, too. I know a lot of kids who said they would have come to beach had they not gotten tickets to the

final practice round that day.”Leading the athletes through

training and game play was longtime player and coach Gary Tome, a native of Wauwatosa, Wis. In April of 2016, Tome was inducted into the Wisconsin Vol-leyball Conference Hall of Fame, and continues to give back to the sport both indoors and outdoors.

“It was great to see all the boys improve throughout the day,” Sharkey said. “There was a wide range of talent and experience, and Gary and his crew did a great job making sure that all the athletes had the opportunity to succeed against other athletes their level.”

The clinic was scheduled for

June 14, between two national beach events being hosted in the Badger Region. On June 11, the Region hosted the American Beach Tour stop. And then the Region organized the Junior Beach Tour Central Open June 17-18 in Waukesha, Wis.

“A lot of the boys who trained with us on June 14 also were signed up for the June 17 boys division of the JBT,” Sharkey said.

“So they got a lot of good advice heading into the big national qualifier beach tournament.”

As they say, all good things must come to an end. At the conclusion of the clinic, all the athletes received a free Badger Region t-shirt. And, what fol-lowed was typical in Wisconsin: A massive storm that generated a few small tornadoes in the north-east corner of the state rolled through and soaked the beach less than an hour after everything was packed up.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better window of great weather,” Sharkey said. “We can’t wait to host some Olympic Day and beach volleyball clinics again in the future.”

Wisconsin Youth Volleyball League continues to grow

The WYVL is ramping up in preparation for their ninth year of providing quality com-petition for boys and girls teams from fifth through eighth grade. This league is made of many school districts from around the area to help better prepare middle school athletes for high school competition, have fun while developing skills at a young age, and allow athletes to play volleyball with other team-mates from their own schools.

The league matches are run on week-ends out of Center Court in Waukesha and occasionally at the Milwaukee Sting Center in Menomonee Falls. Typically, the league starts the first or second weekend in Sep-tember and runs through the last weekend of October with the league wrap up, two-day tournament at the end of October.

The league has been growing from year to year and had 98 teams participate in 2016. The anticipated number of teams this year will break 100 with the exciting addition of Arrowhead and Franklin school districts. Many high schools are taking advantage of this league opportunity in efforts to reach out to their younger players and pass on their love of the game.

In keeping with the overall “spirit” of the league, which is providing high school feeder programs, the teams are made up of athletes that are all from the same school district. If an athlete does not have a WYVL program in their district, please reach out to Tom Jurczyk at 262-548-3838 or Sara Voigt at 262-349-9785.

Badger Region announces dates for winter CAP clinics

Boys middle school leagues return to Oshkosh, Kenosha

The Badger Region Volleyball Association will host a Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) clinic Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 in the state of Wisconsin.

A site will be announced at a later time, but it is worth putting on your calendars now if you are seeking CAP I or CAP II certification.

What is CAP?The USA Volleyball Coaching Accredi-

tation Program (USAV-CAP) provides an opportunity for professional preparation and advancement for the volleyball coach. The curriculum addresses the essential topics for all coaching levels (from the volunteer to the internationally aspiring coach).

Each course level includes a special emphasis on building the foundation and creation of a

well-prepared coach. This knowledge, coupled with hands-on coaching experience, creates an ideal learning experience. USAV-CAP has been helping coaches further their coaching educa-tion for the past 17 years. In that time, more than 35,000 coaches have taken USAV-CAP courses across the United States.

This program assists in meeting the prima-ry objective of the 1978 Amateur Sports Act, which is responsible for allowing the National Governing Body of Volleyball to provide and coordinate technical information on physical training, equipment design and performance analysis. USAV-CAP addresses one-third of these directives within its daily activities.

PhilosophyAny player who enters a volleyball program

has the right to expect quality coaching and instruction. USA Volleyball’s CAP program strives to present an on-going, progressive format in which coaches at all levels receive the most current information available on volley-ball. CAP instruction is based on sound princi-ples in the areas of skills development, tactical systems, physical training, motor learning, sports psychology and administration.

CAP is intended to provide coaching standards for those administrators employing coaches to have a valid means for measuring the qualifica-tions of a given volleyball coach. It is a continuous education process due to the dynamic nature of sport and technology. The four solid corners of the program are integrity, education, commitment and enthusiasm. These are the qualities of any successful coach and program.

The Badger Region is again helping to expand boys volleyball opportunities in two parts of the state of Wisconsin.

2017 marks the third year the Region is helping to operate a middle school league in the Kenosha/Racine corner of the state. This year’s league will be at Kenosha Indian Trail High School, 6800 60th St.

The other league will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the second year the Titans have assisted in helping foster boys volleyball growth around the Fox Valley area.

In both leagues, athletes and coaches from around Kenosha/Racine and Osh-kosh will serve as clinicians and trainers

for the first hour of each night. Then the second hour of the league will consist of play, where the coaches and high school/college athletes will serve as referees and coaches for the various teams.

There is no cost to join either league, but USAV/Badger Region memberships are required to participate. Anyone without a membership will be given a complimentary membership but will have to fill out paperwork (in person or online) before play begins.

For more information on the leagues throughout the Badger Region, click here.

Have questions, email program direc-tor Brian Sharkey at [email protected] or call 414-313-9055.

New program gives coaches more training

USAV announces cities for 2018 national events

“The best way to learn is through a good mentor.”

Over the next few years, the Badger Region will help deliver information to coaching mentors throughout the region, to help the next generation of coaches get better, faster. We want to help place our experi-enced coaches in a position to share their knowledge, see new coaches in action, and guide coaches toward proven methods.

The region has five FREE mentor-training clinics to give away. At each two-hour clinic, all club coaches partic-ipate, while three coaches are trained to be mentors by an Advisor Coach. We have done a good portion of the work for the new mentors.

In 2015, I AM Volleyball Club was the first club to take part as a guinea pig in the 3C

program. According to Master Coach BJ LeRoy, who is help-ing write the manual for the 3C program, “The I AM folks were excellent. They wanted all the tips and critiques they could get and were happy to have us there. We all learned some new things last night.”

Mentor information comes from the latest High Perfor-mance clinics, and other USA Volleyball Education resourc-es that are hard to attend in person. Please consider claiming a clinic just as the season starts to get underway.

Contact BJ LeRoy ([email protected]) or the Badger Region Office for more infor-mation. For the full 3C website being started by the Region, go to: http://badgervolleyball.org/coaches-coaching-coaches/

One of the building blocks of my coaching philosophy is teaching the ability to move on and look forward. I’m not sure who this idea came from or when I realized how

important it was, but I do my best to instill this con-cept in any of my teams. Volleyball is a game made up of many 5-10 second intervals, and if an athlete or team contin-ues to dwell on

the past, they will never be able to move forward. I think everyone can think of at least one opponent or teammate who has stormed away or clapped their hands in frustration after making a mistake. These ath-letes are so consumed with the past that they are often guilty of being the next to make a mistake. If you’re

one of the few who thinks they haven’t noticed this, watch for it at the next match you’re at. If you’re the coach of this athlete, teach them to focus on passing the next serve, or setting up a teammate, whatever their role for the next five seconds may be. If you’ve tried teaching your athletes those concepts with no luck, try taking a step back to see if you are exhibiting the ability to move forward yourself.

If you’re not familiar with boys’ volleyball, let me give you a quick background. Wisconsin is one of the few states that plays high school volleyball in the fall, which means our club season does not start until November. Most other states play high school volleyball in the spring, and have club tryouts in September, which gives them months to pre-pare and play together before our teams are even formed. Although the boy’s club season is not yet over,

I want to share one of my favor-ite coaching moments from this season. We were in the gold bracket at an early season (for Wisconsin teams) qualifier, playing a team that on paper, most would have expect-ed to easily beat us. We were losing the first set 8-0, and our opponent continued to increase their lead up to a margin of 18-5. At this point I could only guess how frustrated our athletes and our team parents were, but during time outs we kept encouraging the kids to move forward, focus on the next point, and continue trying to chip away at the deficit. I am fortunate enough to not have any of the previously mentioned athletes on my team, which I believe is a key reason why our team began to rally back. We ended up rallying back to have set point at 25-24, only to end up losing 28-26. Some may credit this run as a breakdown by the opposing team,

but I credited this as a huge mental win for my team. I had goosebumps as each play went on, and my team kept chipping away at the huge defi-cit we were in. Despite being down by 13 points to a team that should have beaten us, they didn’t give up. After we switched sides, one of our athletes came off the court, panting and smiling, looked at the head coach and myself and said, “coach that was fun, let’s do it again!” Although we ended up losing that set, and eventually the match, this match set a great tone for the rest of our season.

Even though we lost, through-out the season the boys have con-tinued to remind us how much fun that match was. While it may seem a bit strange to be excited about losing, I couldn’t be more excited that they have held on to one of the lessons we taught them earlier this season.

U.S Men’s Team to play Aug. 18-19 in IllinoisVolleyball fans can relive the excitement of last summer’s Olympic

Games when the U.S. Men’s National Team hosts Brazil for two USAV Cup international matches on Aug. 18-19 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

By BJ LeRoyBadger Region Education ChairCoaching friends sometimes

frown when I refer to this picture of Karch, which hangs in the Badger Region office. One friend went so far as to say that it’s irre-sponsible to use this photo when teaching youth. In some sense, he was right.

I believe the photo (courte-sy USA volleyball) is from the 1984 Olympics, where Karch and Aldis Berzins passed with 83 percent efficiency…5 out of 6 passes ranked as a 3 (or “perfect” pass.) No idea if this one was good or not.

On the surface, we obvious-ly do not want our athletes to regularly emulate everything the top players do. You might also say, Karch was one of a kind, we don’t all have his physical gifts. Maybe that’s true. At 6’3” and fairly thin, I’d like to think many boys could reach Karch’s level of fitness if they put in the time and effort that Karch did (though I’ll acknowledge he was a pretty athletic guy. Check him out on here as he competed in the mu-lit-sport contest The Superstars in 1985 against NFL greats of the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhL_AKS1QJA&index-=14&list=FLWrJCYvr-rbSGMu-vYrk-Qrg )

Is it irresponsible to point to Karch or Ngapeth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wAt-8GUNBAw ) and their ridicu-lous skill level? Only if we do it without further understanding. Certainly it would be wrong to say, “Pass like this.”

Somewhere in the thousands of serves Karch received, he learned this was the best way for him to deliver this EXACT ball, with it’s speed, angle and trajectory, from the position that he was in at the time. While con-fusing to look at, he’s not going to hurt himself. I’d argue that this technique, if it worked, was acceptable in that situation.

Here’s what you might see when you look at this picture.

* Creativity – we (should) want our athletes to solve the

problems they are presented in the game. Since the “problems” widely vary, the athletes are constantly moving and reacting and deciding how to solve what they see in front of them.

* Concentration – use the word you like; focus, intensi-ty…he is in the moment, fully dialed in to the task he wants to accomplish. Some directed attention should always be appreciated.

Those two items are certainly worth teaching to our athletes.

Being a little more realis-tic…we’ve heard that right is wrong, left is right for passing. That comes from the long understood fact that it’s usually harder (from most locations) to angle the ball back to setter when the ball is on our right, than when it’s midline or left. Some coaches move their players to take more on the left, or assign passing lanes based on the ball being on a passer’s left.

Going back to Karch; at High Performance, he mentioned that the National Team coaches were working on getting passing reps on the right. Why? Because it was their weakest location. Why not just pass midline, or have the other player take that seam? Because it’s not feasible

to take every ball midline or left. The ball sometimes is on your right, so we need to be better

at it. Maybe at 12’s it’s feasible, because of the slower ball speed, to hammer in that footwork to pass midline every time. By 14’s, there are many serves that won’t get played on the midline.

We hear a lot lately about making mistakes, failing faster and training ugly.

Those ideas come from the study of ecological dynamics, which I’ll tackle in a future article. For now, let’s just say that no two passes are alike (similar, but not the same) and the serves vary widely.

It’s important to learn from our top players that creativi-ty and concentration will be important, as players learn to deal with the ball that the other team gives them; serving, hitting, tipping, overpassing, or other.

There may be a best way to perform a skill according to sta-tistics, beliefs, or experts. There is also the way that worked.
