The ride gives us the opportunity to also enjoy the wonderful colours and distinctive scents of the Sicilian countryside.- Arrival at Chiafura, the city’s pre-historic zone, which is situated at the side of the hill of San Matteo. This prehistoric necropolis was later colonized by the Arabs in the Middle Ages. The side of the hill is a limestone canyon.- We continue on our way by crossing the underground river, near the Church of Santa Maria La Nuova, that leads to the sea.

- Arrival at the pine forest, Chiaramonte, our point of departure of the excursion.

-Departurewithmountainbikes.Wefollowan asphalted road in the middle of the woods which later on becomes a country track. After a short hill climb we will start our descent to the old abandoned Ragusa-Siracusa railway which we follow, crossing the forest and valleys and passing through some countryside tunnels, all the way to Giarratana.

- Arrival at the restaurant for lunch (set menu). The restaurant sells a good selection of typical local products such as olive oil and other Sicilian delicacies (no obligation to buy).

- The forest of Calaforno, which we will be crossing after lunch, is one of the biggest and amongst the most important forests in Sicily. Inside the forest one can easily see foxes, rabbits, hedgehogs, deer, heron, falcons, kestrels and buzzards.


- Following a gravelled path, we will reach the famous Santa Rosalia lake, which is where the excursion ends.

Brief DescriptionThe excursion is extremely interesting from the archaeological point of view; lovers of unspoiled nature will also have afielddaywithmagnificentpanoramicviews as an extra bonus. The 520 meters highcanyonthatwevisitisdefinitelythe deepest and most spectacular of the Iblea Range. Along the canyon there are numerous, splendid lakes and the cascading water falls with emerald coloured water surrounded by white rocks, sculptured by the flowing water. The fauna and flora as well as the wildlife are also extremely interesting withmanyspeciesoffish(troutmacrostigma), aquatic animals, birds and various mammals including porcupines, foxes and rabbits.

- Arrival at the starting point of the excursion, Cava Grande del Cassibile. We will start the descent along the ancient steps until we reach the chosen route.

- The walk along this flat path allows us to admire the amazing views of the valley and the cascading waters and ponds.

- The path leads to the Byzantine village (optional visit). We then follow a trail along the river until we come across a series of wonderful bathing ponds of crystal clear waters where one can stop for a swim in the midst of spectacular sights of unspoiled nature.

- We take the main path back up to the departure point.

- Mini buses will be waiting to take us to lunch (set menu) at an agriturismo.
