• They live between 12 to 15 years in the wild
• Measuring up to abou700 pounds • Measuring between 4½ to 9½ feet.• No 2 tigers have the same stripe patterns
Interesting Facts
• One of the 2 cats that actually fish and swim. The other cat that likes water is the jaguar.
• Hunting mainly at night, the tiger relies on its excellent night vision, which is 6 times better than that of a human.
Why are they endangered?
• They live in a harsher climate• Female tigers give birth once every two
years at any point during the year, very slow reproduction
• Often she cannot catch enough food for the cubs, and some will die
• loss of habitat due to deforestation• They are poached, or illegally hunted, for
their fur and for body parts that are used for traditional medicines.
How are they important to the world?
• They serve a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems.
• This means that while they have many prey species, they have no naturally occurring predators.
• If the population of deer were to exceed these boundaries, overgrazing of vegetation would likely occur.
What is being done to help save them?
• have created laws that outlaw the importation and selling of tiger parts.
• There are also breeding programs to help sustain the tiger population.
• officially protected areas and conservation leases that secure a continuous landscape for tigers.
What can be do to further help?
RAISING PUBLIC AWARENESS, WWF strives to spread the word about the importance of a healthy Amur tiger population.
How successful are efforts?
Pretty successful because there was about only 60 tigers in 1992 & now there is about 500 currently.
