SICO welcomed Sharol at the November 7th meeting. Born and raised on Oahu, Sharol Begonia was first introduced to The Salvation Army as a teenager when she was invited to a youth program. She is currently the Children's Ministry Director at the Ray and Joan Kroc Com- munity Center where she works closely with families and children ages 0-11. The mission of the Kroc Center is to save souls, grow Saints and serve suffering humanity. With Christmas just around the corner, we can achieve this by meeting the needs of struggling families through the Angel Tree program, and the Red Kettle campaign for programs throughout the year. President’s Message

NA MEA HOU

Happy Birthday

Lorraine Fukumae November 30th

Anniversary

Jane Murakami joined SICO,

November 5, 2005

Aloha Kakou!

“We Can Do It!” Remember Rosie the Riveter who repre-sented women who stepped up to serve our country while the men were away serving in the war? I believe that say-ing also exemplifies the members of SICO! Check us out serving the community and dedicated to causes to help im-prove the lives of women and girls! We have a year full of activities!

SICO was the recent community partner for the United Na-tions Day Celebration on October 24th at the State Capitol with a forum entitled, “Uniting the World with Aloha”. Janice Taketa presented eglobal’s Cambodia Project of the Waikiki Rotary Club helping orphans. Kathy Xian gave updates from the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery. I gave a lengthy introduction of SI Fellowship Award Winner, An-drea Aiona, who is working on her doctorate in elementary school curriculum. Andrea’s determination stems from a challenging childhood awry with obstacles. Finally, Joshua Cooper closed with United Nations goals and projects. www.unahawaii.org

See you all at our upcoming activities! Imua!

Wear you Soroptimist pin with pride. Mem-bers re encouraged to proudly wear their pins to each meet-ing, official Soroptimist functions and even away from meetings to show that you have made a difference for women by improving their self esteem and their social and economic status.

If you have the SIA “S” pin, it is to be worn on the left side of the chest above the club pin. Name badges go on the right side.

Members are reminded that there is a $5.00 fee for not wearing your pin to club meetings.

Congratulations and aloha to the newest Soroptimist Club in District VI, Soroptimist International of Northern Mariana Islands. Formally chartered on October 27th, SINMI is the ninth club in District VI.

They will reach out to women both on Saipan and Tinian with the initial 18 members being from Saipan. This new club is being sponsored by SI Marianas.

NEW MISSION STATEMENT

At the recent District VI Meeting on Maui, a new Mis-sion Statement for Soroptimist was revealed. It is now, “Improving the lives of women and girls through pro-grams leading to social and economic empowerment.”

This statement reveals the true nature of how the lives of women and girls are improved.

At the Biennial Convention in Vancouver in July, 2014, a new girl program will be announced that will also reflect the new mission statement.

The Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) Convention promises to bring forth exciting changes. Another reason to get ready to attend and learn first-hand.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE DISTRICT VI MEETING

Held in Wailuku, Maui and sponsored by SI Maui and SI West Maui, District VI clubs welcomed the Founder Region Board and District VI Director Lorene Hopkins. The convening of all the clubs provides the Region Board and District Director a venue to update members and to assist clubs to maintain the Soroptimist focus. As there were many club members who attended a District Meet-ing for the first time, this year’s Meeting provided a wealth of education. The informal setting allowed for lots of interaction in the sharing of information in a fun and less subjective atmosphere . Some of the fun might also have been due to the less inhibited SICO delegation.

Some Highlights:

ICI—Increased Collective Impact = all clubs working toward the same goals. Make Soroptimist yur charity of choice. Stop funding other organizations and invest in our own sustainable, defined programs by providing so-cial and economic empowerment; continue with Club Giving; share membership-recognize diversity, embrace and celebrate our individual uniqueness; promote the dream; share the Live Your Dream website with family and friends; join the Laurel Society.

Women’s Opportunity Award—Founder Region again had 100% participation and was recognized with an “Outstanding Region” award.

Dates to Remember: Requests for Grants due in Mid-March; Celebrating Success forms due by January 14, 2014; Ruby Award due to Governor-Elect Bobbie Ender-lin by February 1, 2014.

Soroptimist Liability Insurance: The policy now pro-vides coverage for the serving of alcoholic beverages. In order to be able to do this, a club member is required to have certification prior to the event by taking the on-line Alcohol Awareness Test. That member must then edu-cate club members.

Caught in the act. Leona claims it wasn’t her fault that she was giggling while Governor Dona was presenting!

Soroptimist is an international service organization improving the lives of women and girls through programs leading to

social and economic empowerment.

Lyn, Jackie Leona and Jane help out at the Easter Seals Annual Golf Roura-ment at the Klipper Kourse on Marine Corps Air Station in Kaneohe. With a last minute request to Leona Soto, SICO members were available to help out. Pres. Rene had a last minute call for assistance and wasn’t able to attend this function.
