L. farmer, Bryn-Lyfryd Roberts Edward, farmer, Tan-y-coed Edwards In. farmer, Rhandir Isaf Lloyd E. farmer Williams John, farmer DAWLEY MAGNA is a town and parish on the road from Wellington to Bridgnorth, with a station at Horsehay in this parish on the Wellington and Severn Junction branch of the Great Western railway, 4 miles south-east from Wellington, about 2! north-west from Madeley and 5 south-west from Shifnal: it is in the Wrekin division of the county, in Wellington division of South Bradford hundred, Madeley county court district, petty sessional division of Wellington, rural deanery of Shifnal, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The town is lighted with gas from works in Chapel street, built in 1857, and belonging to the Dawley Gas Co. Limited. In 1909 an arrangement was made with the Madeley and Broseley Water Co. of Harrington, for the supply of water at a cost of about £15,000; the pump- ing station is at Little Dawley; the engines are of the Producer type and force the water to the two reservoirs at Lawley Bank for distribution to the district. The parish was formed into a Local Government District in 1876, but under the Local Government Act, 1894 (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council was established. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1845, is a building of sandstone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, baptistery and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: there is a font of Norman date: on the east wall is a tablet in memory of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, !914-18. The register dates from the year 1666. The living- was declared a vicarage Dec. I!, 1866, net yearly value £350, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the g-ift of the Bishop of Lichfield, and held since 1936 by the Rev. Edgar Stanley Banfield, of Lin- coln Theological College. There is a Mission church in Hinkshay; a Baptist chapel, erected in 1846, seating 5'50 persons; also two Methodist chapels. The Town Hall, a commodious building, is the property of the Urban District Council. The Market Hall, erected in 1867 and also the property of the Urban Council, is an oblong structure of red brick, with an ornamental frontage and vaults underneath, and is surmounted by a turret containing one bell and a clock, presented in 1867 by the late Lt.-Col. William Kenyon-Slaney. A piece of ground of about 2 acres in extent was given by the late Rt. Hon. Col. William Slaney Kenyon-Slaney M.P. and H. C. Simpson esq. to be used as a public park, and was opened in 1901. In the High street is a monument, erected in IgIO, in memory of Capt. Webb, born in this parish in the year 1848, who lost his life in an attempt to swim the Niagara rapids in 1883. A charity of £7, derived from land, was left in 1684 by Richard Hodden, gentleman, of Ludlow, and a third of this is distributed to the poor of this parish on St. Thomas' Day. Lewis' charity of £200 was left in 1887, and the interest is given to the poor annuallv ~n blanke.ts: Greenhalgh's charity of £1 yearly, left III 1892, IS also for the poor. The Coalbrookdale Co. Ltd. are the principal landowners. The soil is various. The minerals are ironstone and coal. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,259 acres of land and inland water; the population in 1931 was 7,669 in the civil parish and Urban District and of the eccle- siastical parish, 2,815. MALINSLEE, or Dawley Nova, is a township, and of Wellington, Madeley county court district, ruralwas formed into an ecclesiastical parish July 28, 1843, deanery of Shifnal, archdeaconry of Salop and diocesefrom the parish of Dawley Magna, which township it of Lich1ield.
