APRIL 2017TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Potentate’s MessageWell, here it is April already

and we have two of our big fund raisers over. Thank you, Nobles and Ladies, for all your hard work and support with both the Circus and Corned Beef and Cabbage. We hope you enjoyed the great corned beef and we thank you again for your hard work and support.

Lady Harriet and I would like to thank all the nobles and ladies who helped with and attended the Potentates Ball. What a great time we had and such a great turnout.

Hospital Benefit Days is the 29th of April. Thank you all in advance for your help.

Well, April showers bring May flowers and it also brings the start of parade season and the annual Walk for love on May 7th. Get your vehicles and walking shoes ready! Hope to see you all there.

There is still room to go on the hospital trip on May 19th and 20th. Please call the office to make your reservation.

We are working hard on the Christmas Tree Fundraiser. If you have questions, please call the office for the date of the April Meeting.

Thank you all for attending hamburger nights. We enjoy seeing all of you. The weekly Specials have been a great success.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who have lost nobles and family members. We have lost too many good people to the black camel.

APRIL 2017TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

ChantersBy: Bernie Hauber

It is with a heavy heart that I must report the passing of two of our long-time Chanters. On February 10, 2017, Del Campbell, who had been one of our basses, was called to his reward. Del was also a member of Scottish Rite and the Botna Valley Shrine Club. Del was honored with the YMCA Richard Porter Leadership Award, Westfair 31 year Service Recognition Award, Westfair Hall of Fame, and Rotarian of the Year 2013-2014. The Chanters sang at his funeral service on February 15, 2017.

Doug Nielsen, who was one of our top tenors and sang the National Anthem at nearly all the Tangier Shrine Circus performances for several years through 2015, joined the “great celestial choir” on February 15, 2017. Doug retired from OPPD with 42 years of service, was a loyal member of the John J. Mercer Masonic Lodge, and lifelong member of St Luke’s Lutheran Church. The Chanters joined with members of St Luke’s and sang at his funeral service on February 21, 2017.

There was discussion about possible performances this summer (August and September). This includes performances at local churches and other events. The specific dates and times, that we plan to sing, are still tentative. The exact locations are still to be determined. This illustrates that there are often public and Masonic Family events, and if you want us to sing at such events, your request should be received early to verify our availability.

The Chanters continue their weekly meeting and practice schedule. As is noted in the listing of Units & Clubs, we practice nearly every Monday in the Main Room at the Shrine Center. We usually start practice promptly at 7:00 pm. Any noble with even a small interest in singing and a willingness to join us should contact any Chanter or leave a message at the Shrine Center. That’s my update for April.

“There is the happiness which comes from creative effort. The joy of dreaming, creating, building, whether in painting a picture, writing an epic, singing a song, composing a symphony, devising new invention, creating a vast industry.” Henry Miller (American Author)

Daughtersof the Nile

By: Queen Samantha GunnSpring is finally here! With

that comes a new sense of life and beauty. Within Sat-ra Temple it means that a new corps of officers has taken an obligation to serve the Temple for the year. I want to thank everyone who made our Installation at the Scottish Rite a day to remember. This truly shows how the Masonic family works together; no good deed went unnoticed! From those who helped set up, to the behind the scenes team, to all of the members of Sat-ra Temple...thank you!

We have a lot of fun things planned for the year first up on April 22 from 1:00 to 5:00pm is the return of Diva Day, the cost is $20 and allows access to wine tasting and some pampering. Tickets may be purchased in advance; just ask any member. It’s sure to be a great time! Another fundraiser is May 20 we will be hosting the author of the B.O.O.B Girls for a lovely brunch and I’ve been assured we will be laughing out of our seats.

My goal for the year is to build the camaraderie within our Temple. We will have a true FUNdraiser which will go on the entire year, for $1 you can purchase a Pixie which is full of warm fuzzies and pixie dust. This can be given to anyone as a token of your appreciation. For those who are shy you can have it delivered anonymously too. Often in this busy world we forget to say “thank you”. Purchasing a Pixie is a nice way to contribute to our mission of helping the children but also to build each other up. This is open to anyone reading this, please contact any member if interested.

I hope for many great things this year and to build on the relationships we all have started. It will be a wild ride but we’re going to have a blast!

“Fairy tales are stories of triumph and transformation and true love, all things I fervently believe in.”

Corvette ClubBy: Pete Larson President

I’d like to thank all the Corvette Club members who helped man the Annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Fundraiser for Tangier. As always, we manned the drive-through lane during the busy dinner crowd and handled the pace of the meal delivery in the same manner as a fast-paced Corvette road trip.

The parade season will soon be upon us, so with the warmer temperatures of April, the Corvette Club will be planning several road trips under the direction of Richard Roenfeld. In fact, we are planning a road trip to the Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities in May which will coincide with the hospital bus trip sponsored by Tangier.

Our hats are off to the Potentate’s Ball committee for the fine job they did to make this event memorable for Illustrious Sir Jim and Lady Harriett. Several couples from Tangier’s Corvette Club attended the Ball and a fun time was had by all.

Put April 29th on your calendars for the Annual Shrine Hospital Benefit Day. This is a great time for all units and clubs to help support Tangier in its collection of donations for the Hospitals. This is also a day to help recognize Tangier Shrine in the Omaha community for all the work Shiners do to help kids with their medical needs. In conjunction with SHBD, the Annual Walk for Love will be held one week later on May 7th.

REMEMBER – The TCC is looking for a few new members who own a parade-worthy Corvette. The club meets at Tangier Shrine Center at 6:00 pm the second Monday of every month. Please contact Pete Larson at (402) 659-5960 or email him at: [email protected] if you would like more information about becoming a Tangier Corvette Club member.

Until next time, keep your top and windows down when it is warm and sunny, but UP when you go through the car wash!

Road RunnersBy: Stanley Garner

Tangier Road Runners made six trips to the Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities in February, transporting seven patients. Fifteen patients provided their own transportation to Minneapolis, and one patient traveled to St Louis on their own. Four patients were flown to the Chicago hospital, and one to the Philadelphia hospital.

Drivers in February included: B. Thummel, J. Wehling, G. Eckert, F. Kroupa, S. Garner, J. Bishop, H. Fouts, K. Throckmorton, R. Lyon, J. Ryan and M. Dreier.

Thank you all for your efforts!

APRIL 2017TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Golf LeagueBy: Bill ‘Sully’ Sullivan

League play for 2017 will begin on Thursday April 27 at Elmwood Golf Course, and will continue for 20 weeks with two weeks off for the Moila Tournament (July 13-16) and CSSA (August 30 - September 3). See our ad in this issue.

An attempt has been made to contact each league player from last year to verify their plans to continue playing in the league this year. If you have not been contacted, please contact Sully regarding your decision so we can determine if new players will be needed to fill each team. Also, please contact Sully if team rosters or captains are expected to change.

The league is in need of new players. Any Mason interested in joining the Shrine or the league and is available to play Thursdays at 3:30pm sharp is welcome and should contact Bill ‘Sully’ Sullivan or Pete ‘Knickers’ Larson so team assignments can be completed. Current teams are 6-man teams and each player is generally scheduled by their team captains to play 12 of the 18 weeks. We require members to play “ready golf” and we expect to finish each 9-hole round in approximately 2 hours.

Players joining the league must be dedicated and committed to arriving on time and playing each week they are scheduled to play. All players must be in good standing with their Blue Lodge (and the Shrine if a Shriner), and pay for the full season up-front so they have a vested interest in participating when scheduled. Check the league ad in this issue.

Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls.

Howdy Cuzins! How ya’ll doin? Hope you and yours are doin well. A big thanks to everyone that helped with the Corned Beef and Cabbage last month and helped make it a great success. What a fun time too! We’ve got so much stuff going on, I can hardly keep up with it all.

Since we have so dang much stuff going on the Hillbilly bosses have told we are gonna have a meetin. We wanna get your input on a couple of things that are on the calendar. We are having the meeting on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7 pm. The meetin will be at Tangier in the big room. We’ll be discussing the plans for the Initiation in June, the parade season and several other topics. Save the date and please plan on attending.

CHANGE OF PLANS! Speakin of the Hillbilly bosses, we had a meeting and finally realized that the Spring Initiation on April 15th was set for the day before Easter. We did some thinkin and decided that date was not a good idea! So we moved the date. It’s now scheduled for Saturday, June 17th!.. SAVE THE (NEW) DATE! One of the big changes we started last year was doing the ceremonial at Tangier! We have also purchased some fabulous raffle prizes for you to win! We have some other neat ideas too. This is gonna be a heck of a hootenanny! Of course we are going to need lots of help for this event too. So if you can help out, that would be greatly appreciated. Please mark it on your calendar and tell all your friends. Along with the great vittles, we are looking to be changing a few things up this year too. Its gunna be a fun time!

If you have any ideas you’d like to share, please get ahold of one of the HB officers. My email is [email protected]. We appreciate your input. Please keep an eye on the Hot Sands and computer mail for more info on the Spring Ceremonial.

Sweet Cheeks and I hope you and your families are having a great Spring!! Ain’t it great to be a hillbilly!! - Honor the Cob!

Hospital FloatBy: Mike Donham

Spring has sprung and the parade season is fast approaching. Mini Car drivers, check your vehicles as the first parade will be Florence Days on Saturday, May 13. Please check the Hot Sands schedule for further details.

We are still looking for a buyer for the old float trailer. I’m sure there is a farmer out there in need of a trailer to haul hay bales. Give Mike Donham a call at (402) 558-9032.

Hospital Float members are still selling circus shirts at Hamburger nights.

Under sickness and distress: Noble Dick Whiteman’s brother passed away. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Noble Marvin and Lady Renee Kovar are recovering from injuries and Noble Mike Donham is pretty much back to full activity after a Knee replacement.

Happy Birthday wishes to Lady Pat Whiteman. Noble Marvin and Lady Renee celebrate an April anniversary.

Nobles: “Success is not what you think it is…it is what you believe it is…and most never believe.” – Doug Firebaugh

Keystone KopsBy: Capt. Randy “Donkey” Jaccaud

Hello Kops, Kuties, and fellow Nobles. It’s time again for another update on those krazy Keystone Kops. Well, we managed to make it through a Nebraska March with summer temps and snow. First, I would like thank everyone who came out and worked and supported the “Roast the Past Potentate” event. We had a great time despite the small turnout.

A big thanks to all the Keystone Kops and Kuties who supported the Corned Beef and Cabbage fundraiser. Your time and effort was greatly appreciated. Then there was the big event of the month, the Potentate’s Ball. What a great showing we had, I personally thought the decorations for the breakfast were amazing, LOL. I think it’s safe to say that everyone had a good time.

Now it’s time to turn our attention to this month. Our monthly meeting will be on April 14th at 7:30 pm in the lower level of the Shrine. If you don’t belong to a club or unit, stop by and check us out. Get out and support the Shrine – the hamburger nights are every Wednesday, the Stated meeting is April 13th at 7:30 pm, with dinner at 6:15. The end of the month brings Shrine Hospital Benefit Day; get signed up to collect donations.

Also as of this printing we are planning a spring outing which will happen sometime this month, so stay tuned for that.

I would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to everyone, on behalf of the Wonder Family for your Prayers, Love and Support during John’s illness and passing. Special thanks to the Masonic Brothers for the wonderful service. Thank you all for your donations to the Tangier Membership Fund and the Transportation Fund. Your kindness and support has meant a lot to all of us. - Cheryl Wonder and Family

APRIL 2017TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Legion of HonorBy: Jeremy M. Martin

Commander

Here it is April already; time sure does fly by when you are having fun.

April brings with it the first of two Legion of Honor Biscuits and Gravy feeds. A big thank you for everyone who could come out and join us at the Shrine for some good food. As well as a big thank you for all who could help put on this event.

The next big thing on the list is Memorial Day weekend coming up in May. For those who don’t know and as a reminder for those who do know, the Legion of Honor places flags in the front yard of the Shrine during Memorial Day weekend. These flags can be purchased for $10 a flag and can be dedicated to veterans and patriots alike. Just fill out the flag form in the Hot Sands and turn it in with the $10 per flag to either your friendly LoH member or Sandy at the front office. If you are in need of an extra form, there will be some left near the front office or nudge an LoH member and ask for one.

Membership is always on the mind of all the clubs and units and the Legion of Honor is no different, if you would like to see what the Legion of Honor is all about, please feel free to stop by the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm, downstairs at the Shrine. No military experience required.

Mobile NoblesBy: Dave Stolp OK Mobile Nobles, it’s time to consider

parades. One more month before we roll “OLD 357”. The 1st parade is Florence on Saturday May 13th, and then we travel to Council Bluffs on May13th. Check the parade schedule elsewhere in this publication for start times.

As I promised in the last edition, we are proud to announce another new member to our unit. We are pleased to welcome Noble Daryl Cleaver and Lady Anna to the Mobile Nobles unit.

I announced a new member last month by the name of Brad Graham. I need to correct Brad’s Lady’s name to Lori. Again, Welcome!

By the time you read this article our 357 Dinner will be over and we will have awarded some lucky ticket holder a cash prize of $10,000. We will announce this winner and the winners of other cash prizes in the May issue.

Well that’s all for now as I must go wash some windows in the train Club Car. Please remember to support all the Tangier Units and Clubs when you can. We also want to support all the advertisers of the Hot Sands.

See you down the tracks. Quote: Humor is just another defense against the Universe. - Mel Brooks.

By: Noble Don

Tell you what guys and gals, April is going to be one busy month for Mo-Ri. For the 44th year in a row, Sunday morning April 9th, that’s correct, Palm Sunday, Mo-Ri will be teaming up with the Blair Lodge Brothers and making breakfast. Pancakes off of the round cooker, fresh scrambled eggs from scratch, juice, coffee, and from previous comments, the best link sausage at any feed for miles around. We certainly hope many of you will consider driving that County Mile and join us for breakfast before or after church. Doors open at 7:00 am until noon-thirty at the Blair Lodge on the south side of Blair, 1245 Calhoun Blvd., $7 at the door.

Thursday evening, April 20, 2017 Mo-Ri will be meeting at the Blair Marina for our first Dinner Meeting since January. This is the long-established Blair restaurant where Mo-Ri held its first dinner meeting in March of 1973. Take advantage of an opportunity to attend a Mo-Ri function and appreciate the friendship and camaraderie we have become known for. The location is the last right turn in Nebraska before crossing the Missouri River heading East on Highway 30.

Saturday, April 22, 2017 Mo-Ri will be out assisting at one of Tangier’s Hospital Benefit Day collection locations.

Please take a look at who we are and what we do at www.tangieronline.org and click on the Units and Clubs tab.

MO-RI

Motor BBy: Ed Hatter We are hitting the road for Dinner Ride

meetings. We will be at the Farmhouse for the April 3rd meeting. Starting in May, we will riding to some of our fairly local favorite restaurants. On May 2nd we will be meeting at Tangier at 5:30 and riding to Round the Bend Steakhouse for dinner at 6:30. Round the Bend is located near the Ashland exit on I-90 at Mahoney State Park.

We are going to be planning some short rides this summer to some fairly local attractions. If something comes to mind, please email me and we will try to set up a ride. I like heading to some of the close orchards during the fall harvest for some apple pie and ice cream.

If you have a motorcycle or have an interest in motorcycles. We have all kind of bikes in our unit, so don’t think you have to ride a Harley. Feel free to call or email me at [email protected] or contact any of us with questions.

Ride Safe and watch out for Motorcycles.

Motor ABy: Larry Hulsebus

A big thank you to Al and Kelley Patton for hosting the March Motor “A” meeting and their home. After our meeting Al introduced us to extensive collection of Single-Malt Scotch. If you don’t know, Al travels to Ireland every year and is a connoisseur of single-malt scotch. Our sun birds, Gene and Sandy were at our meeting as they just returned from Texas so welcome back!

Motor “A” is getting ready to get our Little 57s out of storage and those fine tuned machines ready for parade season to begin in May. And we want you to know you can’t fool us in the Hot Sands, we know the Council Bluffs parade is May 20th and not the 21st! We are exploring our options for the April Meeting, but if anyone is interested in joining our fun unit please know you are welcome and we would love to have you.

Happy Birthday to Darrin, Brandon, Steve, Ralph and Kelly, and Happy Anniversary to Gene and Sandy, Scott and Andrea, Al and Carole, and Ron and Tami. Until next month, “Keep your gas tanks full and remember to turn the key.”

Shrine Bowl UnitBy: Tom Erickson, Secretary

Greetings from the Shrine Bowl Unit. Our commander John Golden would like to thank everyone who helped out and made this past season’s Big Red Dinners another successful year. Instead of our normal monthly meeting, where the date landed on February 14th, we treated our Ladies to a Valentines Day dinner at Anthony’s and a good time was had by all who attended. I’d also like to thank the unit members who were able to volunteer time at the Circus.

It seems like its hard to believe but preparations are already being made for the 2017 Shrine Bowl Game. The Player/Parent Dinner is scheduled for April 30th at the Tangier Shrine Center with more events to follow.

If interested, any noble is more than welcome to attend our meeting to learn about our unit. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month downstairs at Tangier. Dinner is at 6:30 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00.

APRIL 2017TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Greetings Nobles!

The 2017 Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game is only two months away! Please join us for another fun-filled weekend in Kearney on June 2nd and 3rd.

Rooms have been blocked for Shriners at multiple hotels around the Younes Conference Center. Ask for the “Shriners Rate” when you place your reservations, directly, at the following hotels. The hold on the rooms will expire May 4th, 2017.

Kearney Holiday Inn - Shriners Rate: $99.95 standard rooms, $159.95 for suites. o 110 S 2nd Avenue o (308) 237.5971

Comfort Inn - Shriners Rate: $109.95, includes a free breakfast o 300 W Talmadge Rd. o (308) 236-3400

La Quinta - Shriners Rate: $109.95, includes a free breakfast o 108 3rd Avenue o (308) 237-4400

Again, please call the hotel of your choice directly to make your reservation. The rates identified above are not available online or through any other booking method. All hotels will release any rooms in the block that have not been reserved on May 5, 2017. Reservations will still be accepted at the group rate after that, but will be subject to availability.

Before we get the Shrine Bowl Players to camp and Kearney, we have several opportunities for Nobles, Ladies and our families to interact with the players. Shrine Bowl of Nebraska, Inc. will be hosting a Bowling Tournament on April 29th at Mockingbird Lanes (S 96th Street and Mockingbird Lane). Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Tangier Transportation Fund. Put a team together and come out and meet some of our local Shrine Bowl players. Those interested in this event should contact Dave Workman at [email protected]. Registration forms need to be in by April 19th. More information will follow via our newly redesigned Shrine Bowl of Nebraska, Inc. web site – neshrinebowl.org.

The Tangier Shrine Bowl Player and Parent Dinner will be held Sunday, April 30th at 5:30 pm at Tangier. Once again, we are asking Tangier’s Units and Clubs to “sponsor” a local Shrine Bowl player and share a dinner with his parents or guardians. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the player and his family and inform them about the Shrine, Shriners Hospitals and the Masonic fraternity. If interested in a player “sponsorship,” please contact the Tangier Office or Paul Gonzales at [email protected].

Our Beyond the Field event will be held Tuesday, May 30th at the George A. Knight Field House on the Campus of Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. All Nobles and their ladies are invited to attend. The event begins at 10 am and will run until 2 pm. Our Nebraska-based Shriners Hospital patients and Twin City hospital staff will show the Players and Coaches what being a Shriners Hospital patient is all about. After lunch, the Nebraska Shrine patients will get a chance to play with our Shrine Bowl Players in Abel Stadium. Local and statewide media personnel will also be present so we ask all Nobles to wear your Fez! This is a fantastic event and opportunity to meet and interact with the patients and players.

The Shrine Bowl Game Banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn Kearney on June 2nd at 6 pm. You may make your reservations with the Nebraska Shrine Bowl, Inc office (402) 477-8908. Cost is $25 per person.

Saturday, June 3, 2017 is PARADE AND GAME DAY. Parade will start at 10 am in downtown Kearney. Game starts at 2 pm at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.

Other Dates to keep in Mind:

April 14 – Shrine Bowl Program ads due April 19 – Tangier Player / Parent Dinner reservations due

Thank you to all Tangier Nobles, Ladies and families for your support of the Nebraska Shrine Bowl!

We will see you in Kearney!

- Paul Gonzales
