Report of the DST – SEATS – INSPIRE Programme
INTERNSHIP SCIENCE CAMP
Held from 20-12-2011 to 24-12-2011 (5 Days Work Shop)
COURSE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF COURSE MODULE
A five day workshop sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST)
was organized by Shree Velagapudi Ramakrishna Memorial College, Nagaram, Guntur
(Dist.) Andhra Pradesh during 20-12-2011 to 24-12-2011. This workshop was an
important opportunity to bring out the discussions about the ongoing research works of
various Science fields. The important aim of discussions was to Inspire the Intermediate
Science students towards Science subjects. This will help the nation to attract more
students to science and hence to research purpose. Eminent personalities and Scientists
opened the workshop. It was attended by 150 participants, the Intermediate students of
Science stream from various Jr. colleges in and around Nagaram of Guntur and Prakasam
(Dists.)
Sri BurraRatnaRaju, Principal and Sri M. SudhakaraRaoH.O.D of Chemistry Department
acted as the Convenor and Organizing Secretary of the INSPIRE – SEATS Programme.
Inaugural Function
The Inaugural session was initiated by the Chief Guest Dr. V.S. Rao, Director, BITS
Pilani, Hyderabad Campus who highlighted the aims of the INSPIRE Programme. He also
inspired the participants by taking the eight point oath formed by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam
former president of India photographs and models related to suggested broad themes of
Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics were displayed and they were much
attracted by the participants. The inaugural session was also attended by Prof. G. Prasad,
Registrar, A.N.U. Prof. S. K. Dogra, IGNOU, New Delhi , Sri K. SambasivaRao, O.S.D., S.V.R.M.
College, Nagaram and Sri BurraRatnaRaju, Principal, S.V.R.M. College, Nagaram. All this
eminent personalities spoke on different topics related to INSPIRE (SEATS) programme
and they gave valuable suggestions to the students and other participants.
KEY NOTE ADDRESS
The Keynote address was delivered by Dr. S. Mohan, Director NITTTR, Chennai who spoke
anBiomimicry – Growing Green with Nature. He said that Biomimicry as a concept is based
on the belief that we can find solutions to all our needs as passengers on planet earth by
learning from the plants, animals and natural process that are all around us. He focused his
lecture on the History of Biomimicry and gave live examples like the Tokay gecko’s a lizard
type creature, which climbs vertical surfaces.
Day – I (20-12-2011)
Talk : 1
Prof. S.K. Dogra, IGNOU, New Delhi, gave a lecture on “Physical Chemistry concepts through
Problems” He highlighted the dimension analysis with examples like the simplest constant
can be Plank’s constant, h; units of h; Dimensions of h etc. other important constant he
focused is GAS CONSTANT R. he also explained the thermodynamic quantities in lecture.
Talk : 2 Another lecture on “Innovation in Pharmaceutical
Industry” delivered by Dr. B. Gopalan, CSO Orchid Research
Laborites, Chennai contrasted what is creativity and innovation.
He told about the novel innovations of eminent scientists of the
world. Later, he focused his lecture on Drug Discovery Research
and Told about the development of novel drug delivery systems.

Next talk was presented by Prof. M. Ramachandra Mohan, Bangalore University, Bangalore
on “Urgency of Rehabilitative Measures for Down Stream water bodies of magadi hill
ranges” In this lecture Dr. Mohan mentioned about the innumerable inland water resources
of India particularly of Karnataka. He said that Uncoordinated planning development and
management of water resources greatly increases health risks. He also mentioned the
different systems of water use like surface flows, ground water etc.

Next talk on “Mathematics from Nature” was delivered by Prof. P. Kanda Swamy,
Bharatiar University, Coimbatore. He quoted “Many mathematical principals are based on
ideals and apply to an abstract, perfect world”. He also explained the importance of series
numbers and Fibonacci etc.
Day – II (21-12-2011)
Talk : 1
Dr. Mannem Krishna Murthy, Varsity Education Management Limited, Hyderabad gave a
lecturer on “Earth materials” In his speech he mentioned the uses of limestone. He said that
lime stone is made of calcium carbonate which is available in various minerals. He also
mentioned commercial production of Ammonia, Ethanol, etc. he further spoke about
Cement which is produced by heating powdered limestone and clay.

Second talk on “Limitation of the Knowledge of time” delivered by Dr. B. Satyanarayana,
ANU, Guntur he said that negative numbers were not in the realm of Babylonian
mathematicians. He gave different examples on Hamilton Quantum. He concluded his
speech by saying that mathematics is an open – ended subject.

The next speech was addressed by Sri K. SambasivaRao, O.S.D., S.V.R.M. College, Nagaram
on “Nature’s Role in Biological Control” he started his speech by saying that nature is the
best expert or manager, in the sense of balancing the non-living and living matter. He told
the differences between organic and non-organic matters. Later, he told about the inter
changeable biological reactions by giving examples on photosynthesis and respiration
reactions. He further told about the role of nature in maintaining biodiversity through food
chain and the role of nature in the control of population.

The last talk was given by Prof. S.K. Dogra, IGNOU, New Delhi on “Intermolecular Forces”
Prof. Dogra started his speech by asking various questions on “Intermolecular Forces”. He
said that when temperature is raised, heat energy is supplied to the system which increases
kinetic or translation energy of the molecules and thus moves with increased volcity. He
further explained what is dipole and induced dipole attraction. He mentioned later about
the Ionic bond, lattice energy, conditions of electrical conductivity etc.
PRACTICAL SESSION
In Physics practical session Dr. M. Krishna Murthy, demonstrated experiments
related to Chemistry laboratory, a practical session – “Separation of Amino acids by paper
chromatography” was conducted. In Life Sciences laboratory, DNA isolation by Gel
Electrophoresis seperatio of Pigments by Paper choromatography by Sri K. Sambasiva
Rao.
WALK – TALK
We played Science Videoson NASA & Bigbangand as a walk-in-talk session,
interaction between the participants and Prof. S.K. Dogra, Dr. M. Krishna Murthy,
Sri K. Sambasiva Rao, and the staff members of our college Physics and Chemistry
departments was held.
Day – III (22-12-2011)
Talk : 1
Prof. A.K. Kapoor, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad delivered a lecture on “Silicon and
its compounds in daily life” he gave introduction to what is silicone and its compounds. He
explained the properties of Silicon, in what way it is important to plants and how it
contributes to form sand. Pure silicon is used in the manufacture of electronic devices like
chipping, LCDs, thin – films; Solar Cells, and lastly used Silicon in Alloy wheels motor car
industry.

Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Sri Chaitanya IIT Academy, Hyderabad, gave a lecture on “Physics of
Running”. In his speech he pointed out the velocity or speed of the famous Olympic athlete.
Usian Bolt popularly known as lightning bolt. He derived the formula for speed from the
physical laws and got the value of the power by comparing the empiscal formula with
derived one. Lastly he explained Olympiad Exam.

The third talk on the third day was delivered by Dr. Manned Krishna Murthy on “Subjective
and objective orientation in learning” In his speech he brought about the various
differences in child education and matured education. Later he told about subject
orientation and objective orientation. He told about listening, reading , writing and
speaking skills. He further explained the types of objective testing, teaching requirements,
typical objective questions.

The last talk was addressed by Dr. A. Anjaneyulu on “Graph Theory and its Applications” He
began his speech by giving definition for linear graph. He told about parallel Edges multiple
edges, simple graph, general graphs, Koingsberg Bridges problem, utilities problem,
seating arrangement problem, types of graphs etc. and also gave examples for all of them.
He further explained real numbers.
PRACTICAL SESSION
In Physics practical session Prof. A.K. Kapoor, UOH, Hyderabad
demonstrated experiments related to Optics and Luminescence. In chemistry
PracticalsSpectrophotometric ,PHMetric titrations and Conductometrictitrations.
In life sciences laboratories Fossil impressional of Angiosperms and their
formation, evolution tree regarding Angiosperms Museum Specimans-
observation of some economic interestClassification of Bryophyta and
pteridophyta with examples and plant physiology experiments anatomy slides

Day – IV (23-12-2011)
Talk : 1
The first talk on fourth day was address by Dr. S. Shivaji, CCMB, Hyderabad on “Bacterial
Biodiversity of Antarctica and Stratosphere Via The Indian Ocean” he started his by saying
about “Extremophiles and Thermophiles” later he said that how for Ice covers in the fifth
largest continent “Antarctica”. He showed the pictures of the scientists who explored in
Antarctica. The explorers from India who went to Antarctica were shown. The minerals,
animals, birds living in Antarctica were mentioned.

Next lecture was delivered by Sri G. HanumanthaRao, Lecturer in Mathematics S.V.R.M.
College, Nagaram on “Fuzzy set theory – some applications”. He explained that one of the
recently developed branches of Algebra is “Fuzzy set Theory” Dr. Rao gave definition for
“Fuzzy set theory” its concepts, application, development of Fuzzy set theory, operations in
Fuzzy sets, its sub-groups, Fuzzy sub-modules, corollary and its proof, converse etc.

Next talk was given on “The Beginning of Quantum Mechanics” by Prof. N. Veeraiah,
Krishna University, Machilipatnam. Prof. N. Veeraiah began his speech by mentioning the
pioneers of Quantum Mechanics, like Max Planck, Einstein, NielsBohar, Compton,
Heisenberg, de Broglie etc. He told about how Black body radiation, Wien’s displacement
Law, the Rayleigh – jeans Law. He further said about Planck’s Quantum radiation law;
Bohr’s Atomic Spectra and some photo electric effect line spectra etc. later he told about de
Broglie’s Waves, the uncertainty principle, the wave function the postulate of quantum
mechanics, the Schrodinger’s Equations etc.

The last lecturer was given by Prof. K. Gopalan, NGRI, Hyderabad on “Age of the Earth” he
mentioned that it has been fascinating to know how old the Earth is” He brought forth the
time managing devices like clock or chronometer. He said that according to biblical view
the Earth was created in 4004 BC, that is 6015 year ago, though it is unrealistic. He gave
various formulas to know the Age of Earth.
PRACTICAL SESSION
In Physics practical session Prof. N. Veeraiah, Krishna University, Machilipatnam
demonstrated experiments related to Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism. In Chemistry
laboratory, a practical – “Separation of Amino acids by paper chromatography” was
conducted. In Life Sciences laboratory, DNA isolation by Gel Electrophoresis seperatio of
Pigments by Paper choromatography by Dr. S. Sivaji & Prof. K. Gopalan.

Day – V (24-12-2011)
Talk : 1
The third lecture was delivered by Prof. K. SambasivaRao, IIT, Mumbai on “Macro
Molecules” Prof. Rao defined what are polymers and the word was coined in 1833 by Jons
Jacob Berzelius. He said that Macro molecules are big molecular formed from a large
number of small molecules. The big molecules are known as polymers plastics are derived
from polymers. Later he mentioned the types of polymerization. He showed the structures
of polymers etc. He also explained Nylon, and how if is used in various products.

Prof.K. Lakshmi Narayana, Director, Sindhur Institute of Technology, Siddipet.gavea
video presentation on the law of attraction and water boiled at 212 degrees. He also
showed the generation of electricity through mechanical energy with different models.
Talk : 3
The first talk on day 5 was delivered by Sri K. SambasivaRao, O.S.D. S.V.R.M. College,
Nagaram on “Plant Tissue Culture”. He mentioned in the beginning what is Tissue culture
and defined it. Next he explained the methodology of tissue culture and the advantages of
tissue culture. Later he brought out the types of plant tissue culture like callus culture, cell
culture, organ culture, meristem culture and protoplaste culture.

VALEDICTORY SESSION
The valedictory session was attended by Prof. K. Sambasiva Rao, Dept. of Chemistry,
IIT, Mumbai act as a Chief Guest of the function. Prof. K. Lakshmi Narayana, Director SIT,
Siddepet and Prof. K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, Biotechnology, ANU, Guntur were also present as
guests of honour. Our college Secretary and Correspondent Sri A.D.L. Prasad was acted as
president of the function. In this valedictory function the mathematics book was released
by Honourable guests. The Chief Guest and Guest of honours was inspired the students
with their speeches on the importance of science in the day to day life. They distributed
certificates and material to the participants. Lastly Sri S. Dass, Lecturer in English
extended the vote of thanks.
