A t h i r d t r i a l of r u b b e r f i r i n g a t S t . C o n s t a n t , K i l n # 2 , w a s c a r r i e d o u t f r o m O c t o b e r 1 8 t o O c t o b e r 2 7 , 1982 . . D u r i n g t h e t e s t , t h e k i l n was f i r e d w i t h n a t u r a l g a s . A s u b s t i t u t i o n o f 30% o f t h e n a t u r a l g a s w i t h s h r e d d e d t i r e s was a c h i e v e d o n a l o n g r u n . The p e r f o r m a n c e o f t h e m a t e r i a l h a n d l i n g e q u i p m e n t was v e r y s a t i s f a c t o r y and p e r m i t t e d f a i r l y good k i l n c o n t r o l d u r i n g t h e t r i a l . Samples of r u b b e r u s e d , c l i n k e r p r o d u c e d , as w e l l as s a m p l e s f o r v o l a t i l e r e c i r c u l a t i o n a s s e s s m e n t were s e n t t o B e l l e v i l l e l a b f o r a n a l y s i s . K I L N STABILITY

The k i l n s t a b i l i t y was n o t too good d u r i n g t h e t r i a l r e s u l t i n g i n e l e v e n k i l n s lowdowns a s s o c i a t e d w i t h s e v e r a l s t o p p a g e s o f t h e r u b b e r i n j e c t i o n . T h e poor r e g u l a t i o n of t h e water spray s y s t e m seemed t o c o n t r i b u t e l a r g e l y t o t h i s c y c l i n g c o n d i t i o n . On O c t o b e r 2 3 , c h a n g i n g t h e water s p r a y s y s t e m t o manua l mode improved t h e k i l n s t a b i l i t y and t h e oxygen v a r i a t i o n u n t i l Monday m o r n i n g , O c t o b e r 25 . (See t r e n d s on k i l n c h a r t o f O c t o b e r 2 3 , Append ix 11).

C o n s e q u e n t l y , r u b b e r f i r i n g d u r i n g t h e t e s t was n o t t h e main u p s e t t i n g f a c t o r o f t h e k i l n , and seemed t o be q u i t e c o m p a t i b l e w i t h good k i l n s t a b i l i t y .

IMPACT ON BURNI1,lG ZONE

The ma in e f f e c t of i n s u f f l a t i n g s h r e d d e d t i r e s i n t h e b u r n i n g z o n e i s t o c o n c e n t r a t e t h e h e a t where unburned r u b b e r is f a l l i n g i n t o t h e k i l n . T h i s g e n e r a t e s , on 1 0 t o 1 5 f e e t of t h e b u r n i n g z o n e , a h i g h c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f h e a t w h i c h becomes t h e i m p o r t a n t f a c t o r t o be c o n t r o l l e d by t h e k i l n operator .

A too h i g h temperature a t t h i s p o i n t w i l l cause c o a t i n g e r o s i o n , h i g h e r s h e l l t e m p e r a t u r e and on a l o n g e r term c o u l d r e s u l t i n a s h o r t e r b r i c k l i f e , T h i s p rob lem c a n e a s i l y be c o n t r o l l e d , t o a c e r t a i n e x t e n t , by t h e oper- a tors , b u t w i l l l i m i t t h e p e r c e n t o f p o s s i b l e s u b s t i t u - t i o n a n d t h e s i z e of t h e pa r t i c l e s o f t h e s h r e d d e d t ires u s e d .

D u r i n g t h e t e s t , t h i s p o s i t i o n was n o t r e a c h e d d u e t o p h y s i c a l c o n s t r a i n t o f t h e e q u i p m e n t l a y o u t . T h i s w i l l be corrected i n t h e f u t u r e . D u r i n g t h e t e s t , t h e r u b b e r s p r a y w a s c u t t i n g t h e f l a m e i n a s l i g h t a n g l e and a b o u t 70% of t h e r u b b e r w a s f a l l i n g on t h e opposi te s i d e o f t h e l o a d b e f o r e b e i n g i g n i t e d . The exac t p o s i t i o n o f t h e i n s u f l a t i o n p i p e is g i v e n o n t h e s k e t c h i n c l u d e d i n Append ix 111.

9 . BURNING ZONE CONTROL

B u r n i n g s h r e d d e d t i res d o e s n o t cause a d d i t i o n a l problems w i t h t h e b u r n i n g z o n e c o n t r o l and t h e k i l n o p e r a t i o n i n g e n e r a l , and i s s u b j e c t o n l y t o t h e f a m i l i a r i z a t i o n o f t h e k i l n operator w i t h t h i s p a r t i c u l a r new process. N e v e r t h e l e s s , s t o p p i n g a n d r e s t a r t i n g t h e r u b b e r f i r i n g u p s e t s t h e b u r n i n g z o n e by s h i f t i n g t h e c l i n k e r i z a t i o n p o i n t u p and down t h e k i l n . The complete details of the precipitator, reaction appear in Appendix 111. Also, a sample of the precipitator dust, collected during and after the test, was sent to a specialized lab for resistivity analysis.

The deterioration of the precipitator efficiency is the only negative aspect of the trial made in St.Constant, and the reasons for this are unknown at this time but are under study.

SAMPLING DONE DURING AND AFTER TEST

Three samplig campaigns were made during the trial in order to determine the volatile recirculation:

a) Two were made during rubber injection on October 20 and 22, between 9:00 and 12:OO.

b) The last one was done on October 29, 48 hours after the rubber firing test was completed. All these samples were taken under very stable kiln conditions and should be very representative for volatile recirculation evaluation.

Daily rubber and clinker samples were taken during the test and sent to the Belleville lab for analysis. The results of these analysis are not yet known but will be included in the final report. A sketch showing the sampling points on the kiln circuit is included in Appendix V.

INDUSTRIAL GRINDING OF CLINKER PRODUCED

A four-hour grinding test of pure clinker produced during the test has already been done, and the internal test results are included in Appendix VI.

The S t . C o n s t a n t K i l n # 2 r u b b e r f i r i n g t es t was g e n e r a l l y p o s i t i v e . However, t h e d u s t co l l ec to r r e a c t i o n was a n e g a t i v e p o i n t i n t h i s t e s t and r e m a i n s t h e major q u e s t i o n mark of t h e f e a s i b i l i t y of b u r n i n g r u b b e r i n o u r c e m e n t k i l n s on a p e r m a n e n t b a s i s i n t h e f u t u r e .
