About the American Quilter’s Society (AQS)The American Quilter’s Society is the largest quilting membership organization in the world. For 35 years, AQS has been the leading voice in quilting inspiration and advice, through a broad suite of products—magazines, books, live events, contests, workshops, online networks, patterns, fabrics, and catalogs. At AQS, we believe that with inspiration and advice, the creative individual can take their quilting projects beyond what even they had imagined. That is why inspiration is central to everything we do. The leading authors in quilting choose to publish with AQS; the best in quilt artistry select AQS events to display their work; the newest quilters learn from the knowledge and inspiration of AQS members.
To the maximum extent of the law, your attendance and participation, including that of your children and minors accompanying you, in any AQS QuiltWeek workshops, lectures, or special events (paid for or not), is conditioned on your agreement to hereby indemnify American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors from and never to make any claim for injury, loss, or damage to you or your children and minors accompanying you, against American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors, caused by its very own negligence, strict liability, or for any other reason. By signing the registration form, registering online, or paying for show admission, you agree to the above terms and conditions.

Welcome to Lancaster! It’s a beautiful week in Lancaster! The scenery here is always gorgeous, and you’ll find incomparable sights indoors at the AQS QuiltWeek Show in the Lancaster County Convention Center as well. We’re happy you are here to enjoy this incredible event. It wouldn’t be AQS QuiltWeek without you!
You’ll see 463 quilts on display overall, an amazing mix of machine- and hand-quilted masterpieces in every style. Watch for the Viewer’s Choice ballots and be sure to mark your favorite AQS Contest quilt. We’re pleased to present Bethanne Nemesh: Walk a Creative Path as the featured instructor exhibit. It’s just one of 10 very special exhibits on display, including the exciting PRINCE Cherrywood Challenge 2018 exhibit, SAQA: Tranquility, Desedamas – Spain, a preview of the 35 Years of AQS Anniversary Showcase, and many more.
Are you looking for a new project? Absorb inspiration from all the quilts around the venue, then browse the vendor booths to find just what you need to complete your next quilt. Stop for a demonstration here and there!
Learn in workshops with world-class instructors and hear lectures from renowned quilters. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced quilter, you will find classes at AQS QuiltWeek to help you improve your skills. Stop by the AQS Information Center to find remaining spots in classes and lectures.
Don’t miss the opportunity to learn and laugh at QuiltWeek special events with Deb Tucker, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and Charlotte Angotti. The ever-popular All-Star Review is the perfect place to meet this year’s instructors, see technique demonstrations, buy exclusive products, and get an autograph or two.
Let the maps in this showbook be your guide. You won’t want to miss a thing! Comfortable walking shoes are a must as you immerse yourself in the world of quilting. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask any AQS staff member.
When you’re not at the show, we hope you’ll take some time to enjoy Lancaster’s beauty and enticing cuisine. Thanks for spending time with us at AQS QuiltWeek Shows this year as we celebrate our 35th Anniversary!

Quilts of
ValorA 50 State Salute
by Sue Reich
Celebrating 15 years of wrapping service members and veteransin quilted comfort.
Fifteen years ago, while her son was serving in Iraq, Catherine Roberts had a dream. She envi-
sioned a young soldier on the battlefront seated on his bunk in a hunched position. In Catherine’s words:
“I could see the war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and wellbe-ing. The quilt had made a dramatic change. The message of my dream was Quilts = Healing.” 1
Catherine immediately set to work making quilts for those serving in our current war and established the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Enlisting her many Delaware quilt guild friends, they created patriotic quilts to “wrap military touched by war.”2 Her first Quilt of Valor (QOV) was awarded at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Fifteen years later, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has grown to nearly 10,000 members nationwide, and in November, 2018, QOVF awarded its 200,000th quilt.
Quilts of Valor are made by a volunteer grassroots organization following specific parameters set forth on the website, www.qovf.org. Most quilts are red, white, and blue, very patriotic with stars, stripes, eagles, and symbols of military service. Some are more generic, less patriotic quilts made for service members suffering from the invisible wounds of war for whom a patriotic quilt might prove too painful.
Another very successful QOVF (Quilts of Valor Foundation) program is the Under Our Wings proj-ect. Its purpose is to teach young people, members of senior centers, and those who are just beginning to sew how to make a Quilt of Valor and provide an opportunity to participate in a QOV Award ceremony.
First row, from left: Red, White and Blue and ScRappy too: Original design, pieced and long-arm-quilted by Andre Emmell, Vermont; StaRS & StRipes: Pieced and longarm-quilted by Kelly Harvey. Original design by Kelly Harvey and Patty Gallmeyer, Illinois; old GloRy Quilt: Pieced and longarm quilted by Elaine S. Breiner from a kit by Simpson and Minnick. Awarded to Colonel Renelda Peldunas-Harter, US Army Retired and QOVF Board member; Sadie Birky of Nebraska displays her QOV top made in the Under Our Wings® program; Middle row, right: Marianne Fons awarding a quilt at Walter Reed National Medical Center; Bottom row, from left: Sleepy time Gal: Original design, pieced and longarm quilted by Janice Hobbs. This quilt was awarded to Wilburn Rowden, who was a WWII radio operator on a B-17 Bomber named Sleepy Time Gal; QOV Award at the Vietnam Wall by Major General Walt Davis, US Army,
Retired and QOVF Board Emeritus (left) in June, 2016; Blessing of the QOV at Walter Reed.
A tribute Quilts of Valor: A 50 State Salute, the book of the Quilts of Valor
Foundation, was published in September 2018. Marianne
Fons of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting fame, QOVF Emeritus,
wrote in the book’s foreword. She penned, “National service
can be as complicated as giving your life for your country or
as simple as making a quilt and giving it away.”3 She also
reflected on the experience of giving a quilt to a veteran or
active duty soldier, saying, “I found my own heart healed.”4
Quilts of Valor: A 50 State Salute authors Ann Parsons Holte,
Renelda Peldunas-Harter, Ann Rehbein, and Sue Reich fol-
lowed with chapters including Quiltmaking in Times of War;
Quilts of Valor Foundation - Then and Now; Quilts of Valor
from Fifty States; and Quilt of Valor Patterns. The pattern sec-
tion of the book includes extensive instructions for making 16
quilts of all levels, all appropriate for giving through the QOVF.
Benevolent quiltmakingDuring the Civil War, women in towns and villages in both the
North and South sent quilts to the battlefront. Those from
the North became known historically as Sanitary Commission
quilts. It has been estimated that 350,000–500,000 quilts were
packed in barrels and sent to soldiers in the battlefields through-
out our divided nation at war. Over one hundred and fifty years
later, less than 10 Sanitary Commission quilts have survived.
There is little documentation about the making of these quilts.
Quilts of Valor makers are replicating that same benevolent
quiltmaking of the Civil War years. In Quilts of Valor: A 50 State
Salute, today’s quiltmakers share their motivations to honor
our nation’s military. They record their inspirations for choosing
quilt patterns and designs in patriotic red, white, and blue fab-
ric. They also share their very personal, heartwarming stories
of the QOV Award ceremonies and the reactions of the “mili-
tary touched by war” who received a QOV. The testimonials
below express the profound impact of participating in QOVF.
From a Quilt of Valor maker: “Making Quilts of Valor is my passion. It has touched my life in so many ways. I hardly know where to begin.” 5
From a veteran: “As silly as it sounds, with over three years in Iraq and Afghanistan…that blanket became a true item of com-fort and peace for the road ahead.” 6
Be sure to see the Quilts of Valor: A 50 State Salute
exhibit located in the exhibit hall here at Lancaster and
consider making a QOV to honor a soldier or veteran.
Ann Rehbein, Executive Director of QOVF (2015-2019), awarding a QOV in Iowa.

Bethanne Nemesh’s interest in quilting began when the subtle influence of her grandmother intersected with her move to eastern Pennsylvania, an area rich in Amish quilting designs. Each quilt design is drawn four times; first sketched on paper, then finalized with a permanent marker before being traced onto the quilt fabric and finally drawn with thread. Singular Stars: Lone Star Quilts from Judy Martin Sponsored by
This exhibit features groundbreaking Lone Stars from Judy Martin’s most recent book, Singular Stars. Here, Judy explores strip-pieced Lone Stars, taking them in new directions with the addition of undulating curves, gradations of color, starburst elements, satellite stars, strip-pieced diamond borders, and other design elements. She even adds Log Cabin-like setting
possibilities to several of her Lone Star quilts.
Desedamas - SpainCecília and Mercè González made a series of quilts capturing the experience of eating. They used fabrics to build a bridge between cooking and textile art. Cecília portrayed the dishes, transforming something as ephemeral as food into a contemporary and two-dimensional textile piece of art. Mercè dealt with the beverages, from water to spirits, to turn these liquids into translucent ethereal works full of color,
movement, and sensuality.

What happens when you give artists the same fabric, same color, and same inspiration? The result is an amazing variety of ideas! All the pieces in this collection are created with Cherrywood Hand-Dyed Fabric. Artists took inspiration from Prince, the late musician from Minnesota (also home of Cherrywood). Because of the cohesive nature of the quilts,
the exhibit makes a huge visual impact.

Quilts of Valor –A 50 State Salute
The Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) presents quilts representing
24 states that will be awarded to veterans and military who have
been touched by war. The “50 State Salute” exhibit features
quilts made in patriotic designs from the simple to the complex.
Members of the QOVF range from young beginning quilters in
the “Under Our Wings” program to experienced members who
have been making Quilts of Valor for many years. These quilts are
meant to inspire all levels of quiltmakers and showcase the many
possibilities for expressing gratitude to our military through quilts.
This exhibit will be displayed at AQS QuiltWeek Shows throughout
2019. After its last stop at The National Quilt Museum from
November 2019 to February 2020, the quilts will be awarded to
veterans and military in Paducah, Kentucky. Stop at the Quilts of
Valor booth in the exhibit area for more quilts, the exhibit book,
and information about the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
