etc (More information will be provided about the Maze Day in next weeks Shout Out) This Shout Out is dedicated to two GMS AVID students who volunteered to help two visually impaired students be able to participate and enjoy the days events Ana Flores 7th grade AVID student and Taylor Matherly an 8th grade AVID student attended Maze Day with all the visually impaired students from around the district They were partnered with two visually

impaired students who needed a buddy for the day It takes a great deal of maturity to agree to be responsible for a stranger and even more to be responsible for a stranger with special needs These girls did not falter in their task They did an awesome job and learned a lot while doing it The whole experience was educational as well as beneficial to all involved These girls and I had a fantastic day and made many new friends It is just one more example of the awesome opportunities provided to our AVID students Great Job Ana and Taylorrdquo (photo above Taylor at left Ana)

Shout out to Performing Arts Students in ABSS

Lisa Segars is an EC teacher at Eastern High She shared this news about two of our students from ABSS that were chosen for leading roles in Community Theater of Greensboros Center Stage version of Les Miserables Carole Segars a 5th grader at Alexander Wilson and Lauren Gornto 7th grader at Western Middle ldquoThese actresses had 4 performances this past weekend at the Broach Theater and also again this past Wed and Thursday night at 700 Each of these students has practiced almost nightly until 1000 and both have maintained A averages in their school work Both girls also just finished Willy Wonka the day before their practices for Les Mis started They have been busy with doing both of these since Jan 3rd and deserve a Shout Out for their hard work and talentrdquo Carolinersquos role was Madame Thernardier while Lauren performed as Fantine

Remember a previous Shout Out about Briggette Slivinksi ABMC senior earning First Place in the Regional North Carolina History Day competition out of 20 counties Well this past weekend Briggette competed in Raleigh at the State level National History Day competition held at the Museum of History in Raleigh She made it to the finals (second round of competition) and earned 4th Place honors for North Carolina We are all VERY PROUD of how well she did in this highly rigorous academic competition Briggette is the first ABSS student to ever enter a project for North Carolina National History Day

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Special thanks to the Jack Orsquo Kelley Sertoma Club and ABSS SEPTA (Special Education PTA) for funding this event entirely for these students and families Another special thanks to all of the ABSS staff that planned this event and came out to participate (Christina Armfield Justine Gatsche Debbie Kincaid Aimee Gerringer Elaine Wall Denise Lott Jovon Key Donna Pleasants Jessica Sink Tricia Medford Phyllis Crisp and me) This will be the first of many gatherings for this great grouprdquo

Shout Out to Heather Stephan at Southern Middle Jodi Hofberg Math Specialist for the Secondary Curriculum Support Team says ldquoCongratulations to Heather Stephan 7th grade teacher at Southern Middle School She has been named the A-B Outstanding Secondary Math Teacher for 2012 Ms Stephan will receive a year-long membership to NCCTM a personalized award and recognition at the state math conference in October

Shout Out to North Graham Elementary

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Technical Education Department on Wednesday May 2nd The fair focused on the 3 Ersquos (Employed Enlisted Enrolled) and also provided other contacts for students to learn about scholarships and local community resources

AP Angela Lynch at GPE shared ldquoHeather Fahnrichrsquos Class at Grove Park is mad about Matt Students received autographed pictures from University of South Carolina Pitcher Matt Price The students wrote to Matt Price wishing him good luck on his games this season In response Matt Price wrote back to each student answering questions and telling them all about the hard work it takes to get where he is today Matt mentioned the importance of not only working hard in his sport but also on academics as wellrdquo

Shout Out to Eastern Eagles and the Red Carpet Treatment Lia Long prom advisor at EAHS sent this in ldquoThe Eastern Eagles are hosting the 2012 prom on Saturday May 5th at Ramada Inn and we are doing a Red Carpet Arrival from 9 pm to 10 pm The event has an Oscars Night theme and our very own celebrity Jake Foushee is going to be the EA Tonight host ldquoroving reporterrdquo with my daughter Allie who goes to Williams The reporters will be interviewing prom-goers as they get out of their cars and make a grand entrance Spectators are invited o come and watch the arrivalsrdquo If you are out and about in Burlington on Saturday night head on over to the Ramada to watch and prepare to be glitzed

Shout Out to Southern High Simone Royal and Meredith Gilmore juniors at Southern High are state semi-finalists in the North Carolina Letters About Literature Competition The North Carolina Center for the Book a program of the State Library of North Carolina within the Department of Cultural Resources hosts the annual reading and writing competition for students in grades 4 through 12 The contest encourages students to write a letter to an author about a book by that author The letter is to tell the author how the book impacted the students life in some way There were nearly 2000 entries in the North Carolina competition Nationwide almost 59000 students entered this yearrsquos competition which is a project of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (The photo above is courtesy of Lynn Bare AP and Honors III English teacher at SAHS Simone is pictured at left Meredith right) Congratulations Patriots

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Special thanks to the Jack Orsquo Kelley Sertoma Club and ABSS SEPTA (Special Education PTA) for funding this event entirely for these students and families Another special thanks to all of the ABSS staff that planned this event and came out to participate (Christina Armfield Justine Gatsche Debbie Kincaid Aimee Gerringer Elaine Wall Denise Lott Jovon Key Donna Pleasants Jessica Sink Tricia Medford Phyllis Crisp and me) This will be the first of many gatherings for this great grouprdquo

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out to Southern High Simone Royal and Meredith Gilmore juniors at Southern High are state semi-finalists in the North Carolina Letters About Literature Competition The North Carolina Center for the Book a program of the State Library of North Carolina within the Department of Cultural Resources hosts the annual reading and writing competition for students in grades 4 through 12 The contest encourages students to write a letter to an author about a book by that author The letter is to tell the author how the book impacted the students life in some way There were nearly 2000 entries in the North Carolina competition Nationwide almost 59000 students entered this yearrsquos competition which is a project of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (The photo above is courtesy of Lynn Bare AP and Honors III English teacher at SAHS Simone is pictured at left Meredith right) Congratulations Patriots

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out to Southern High Simone Royal and Meredith Gilmore juniors at Southern High are state semi-finalists in the North Carolina Letters About Literature Competition The North Carolina Center for the Book a program of the State Library of North Carolina within the Department of Cultural Resources hosts the annual reading and writing competition for students in grades 4 through 12 The contest encourages students to write a letter to an author about a book by that author The letter is to tell the author how the book impacted the students life in some way There were nearly 2000 entries in the North Carolina competition Nationwide almost 59000 students entered this yearrsquos competition which is a project of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (The photo above is courtesy of Lynn Bare AP and Honors III English teacher at SAHS Simone is pictured at left Meredith right) Congratulations Patriots

Lisa Segars is an EC teacher at Eastern High She shared this news about two of our students from ABSS that were chosen for leading roles in Community Theater of Greensboros Center Stage version of Les Miserables Carole Segars a 5th grader at Alexander Wilson and Lauren Gornto 7th grader at Western Middle ldquoThese actresses had 4 performances this past weekend at the Broach Theater and also again this past Wed and Thursday night at 700 Each of these students has practiced almost nightly until 1000 and both have maintained A averages in their school work Both girls also just finished Willy Wonka the day before their practices for Les Mis started They have been busy with doing both of these since Jan 3rd and deserve a Shout Out for their hard work and talentrdquo Carolinersquos role was Madame Thernardier while Lauren performed as Fantine

Remember a previous Shout Out about Briggette Slivinksi ABMC senior earning First Place in the Regional North Carolina History Day competition out of 20 counties Well this past weekend Briggette competed in Raleigh at the State level National History Day competition held at the Museum of History in Raleigh She made it to the finals (second round of competition) and earned 4th Place honors for North Carolina We are all VERY PROUD of how well she did in this highly rigorous academic competition Briggette is the first ABSS student to ever enter a project for North Carolina National History Day

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out for ABSS Stefanie Nance Related Services Coordinator for the EC Department shared this photo and news for a district-wide inaugural event ldquoOur ABSS team for Hearing Impaired students hosted the Inaugural Deaf and Hard of Hearing Family Night on April 24th Fourteen students ranging in age from 3-19 years old came to eat pizza and cake at Country Club Lanes in Burlington bowl game after game meet new friends and catch up with old friends This night not only gave our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students the chance to be with their peers it gave their parents time to talk and network with one another From oral language users to sign language and cued speech users the language of laughter was shared and understood by all

Special thanks to the Jack Orsquo Kelley Sertoma Club and ABSS SEPTA (Special Education PTA) for funding this event entirely for these students and families Another special thanks to all of the ABSS staff that planned this event and came out to participate (Christina Armfield Justine Gatsche Debbie Kincaid Aimee Gerringer Elaine Wall Denise Lott Jovon Key Donna Pleasants Jessica Sink Tricia Medford Phyllis Crisp and me) This will be the first of many gatherings for this great grouprdquo

Shout Out to North Graham Elementary

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Technical Education Department on Wednesday May 2nd The fair focused on the 3 Ersquos (Employed Enlisted Enrolled) and also provided other contacts for students to learn about scholarships and local community resources

AP Angela Lynch at GPE shared ldquoHeather Fahnrichrsquos Class at Grove Park is mad about Matt Students received autographed pictures from University of South Carolina Pitcher Matt Price The students wrote to Matt Price wishing him good luck on his games this season In response Matt Price wrote back to each student answering questions and telling them all about the hard work it takes to get where he is today Matt mentioned the importance of not only working hard in his sport but also on academics as wellrdquo

Shout Out to Southern High Simone Royal and Meredith Gilmore juniors at Southern High are state semi-finalists in the North Carolina Letters About Literature Competition The North Carolina Center for the Book a program of the State Library of North Carolina within the Department of Cultural Resources hosts the annual reading and writing competition for students in grades 4 through 12 The contest encourages students to write a letter to an author about a book by that author The letter is to tell the author how the book impacted the students life in some way There were nearly 2000 entries in the North Carolina competition Nationwide almost 59000 students entered this yearrsquos competition which is a project of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (The photo above is courtesy of Lynn Bare AP and Honors III English teacher at SAHS Simone is pictured at left Meredith right) Congratulations Patriots

Shout Out to North Graham Elementary

Marilyn Clayton ESL teacher at North Graham shared ldquoMy third graders (a group of four) read a story this year about a boy who had an idea to improve his Florida community and wrote to his mayor about it

My students decided to think of something they could do to improve Graham They chose two locations where they had seen litter which they could clean up After school one day in March we went there with latex gloves

plastic bags and grabbers The kids enjoyed cleaning up the creek at Greenway Park and a ditch on Travora Street Next they wrote letters to Mayor Jerry Peterman about their experience They expressed a desire to meet him and he agreed Mayor Peterman met my students and me at Greenway Park in Graham after school on May 2 to pick up some more litter in the park and in Town Branch Creek and see an old family cemetery adjacent to the park Howard Tash from Team Alamance NC Big Sweep also came to give my students environmental education materials and talk about the watershed David Duarte Migdalia Pozos-Guido Jessica Quevedo-Agustiniano and I enjoyed our afternoon with the Mayorrdquo Thanks Mayor Peterman

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out to Southern High Author Leslie Morris Lynn Bare English teacher at SAHS shared ldquoLeslie Morris won first place in the Jack OrsquoKelley Sertoma Club 2012 National Heritage Essay Contest She won $500 This is an annual contest and the prompt usually connects to something relevant to todayrsquos world This year the background information referenced the economic situation of our country and world and how this threatens the way we live today and in the future Students were asked to think about how to prepare to meet the challenges caused by this uncertainty The actual prompt was Many of you have already decided or are in the process of deciding on a direction field or profession for your life Thatrsquos commendable But what if your plan your Plan A doesnrsquot work out Do you have any alternative or a Plan B Do you think one is necessary How will you decide what it will be What steps or resources will you use to help you decide Leslie wrote about the how important it is to have determination to succeed but that sometimes failure is inevitable She used examples of people that did not succeed at their first attempts at success but continued until they realized their dreams such as Abraham Lincoln and Walt Disney This is the second time wersquove had the 1st place winner from SAHSrdquo Congratulations Leslie

Shout Out to Southern High Simone Royal and Meredith Gilmore juniors at Southern High are state semi-finalists in the North Carolina Letters About Literature Competition The North Carolina Center for the Book a program of the State Library of North Carolina within the Department of Cultural Resources hosts the annual reading and writing competition for students in grades 4 through 12 The contest encourages students to write a letter to an author about a book by that author The letter is to tell the author how the book impacted the students life in some way There were nearly 2000 entries in the North Carolina competition Nationwide almost 59000 students entered this yearrsquos competition which is a project of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (The photo above is courtesy of Lynn Bare AP and Honors III English teacher at SAHS Simone is pictured at left Meredith right) Congratulations Patriots
