Just after the storm, several of our custodians, in addition to our maintenance coordinator, Bill Vaughn, reported to South Woods Elementary school to help out at the pet-friendly hurricane shelter. They worked so hard, keeping the school clean and helping those who had been displaced by the storm with many various needs. Mr. Chris even sat up all night long keeping vigil over a 6-year old who couldn’t get to sleep so that his parents could!! I can’t tell you all how much I appreciate all that you did.

Notes from Principal Taylor

Dear Hartley Families,

I hope everyone is recovering from the effects of Hurricane Matthew and that you have

been able to resume some sense of normal in the aftermath.

I have been overwhelmed by the generosity, care and concern of our Hartley family

over the past few weeks. First of all, we exceeded our goal of $18,000 for our annual

fund raiser in spite of the terrible timing around Hurricane Matthew. We’ll have exact

amounts later this week, but thank you so much for being Super Heroes for our Super

School. Coach Masters is excited about being able to purchase new playground and PE

equipment for our students, and we’ll be ordering iPads soon for teachers to check out

from the media center. Your contributions will also help us to provide subscriptions to

academic programs that help students to master foundation, as well as challenge, skills

in math and reading.

On top of that, we had families contact us with offers of help for those who suffered

great loss during the storm. We’ve been able to link those in need to those who were

able to help in order to lessen the loss of many who were affected which has affirmed

what I’ve always felt about this school. We are truly Hartley family, and to see how so

many have stepped up to care for each other has been beyond heart- warming.

Finally, I want to thank our Hartley “maintenance engineers”. Just after the storm,

several of our custodians, in addition to our maintenance coordinator, Bill Vaughn,

reported to South Woods Elementary school to help out at the pet-friendly hurricane

shelter. They worked so hard, keeping the school clean and helping those who had been

displaced by the storm with many various needs. Mr. Chris even sat up all night long

keeping vigil over a 6-year old who couldn’t get to sleep so that his parents could!! I

can’t tell you all how much I appreciate all that you did.

Hartley Visitors: If you would like to visit your child at school during lunch, attend a field trip, and/or volunteer at school, please

fill out the volunteer application on the following website: https://knt3.keepntrack.com/HTML/KnTOnlineVolunteerApplication.html?db=stjohns&version=3.16.1-20160701

You must be an approved volunteer to come into school and do any of the above fun things at Hartley. You can

no longer sign-in as a visitor. You must be an approved volunteer or an approved vendor. Once your application

has been cleared through the school district and the St. Johns County Sherriff’s office, it will be valid for three

years. You will not need to fill out another application in the future, just let us know you need to be

renewed. Your volunteer status, once cleared, will allow you to sign in at all St. Johns County Schools.

Please do not check your child out early from school, or call after 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Wednesday) to change the way your child goes home (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY). Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Notes from Nurse Rosemary

If your children become ill, please

do not send them to school until they

have been fever free for 24 hours

without the aid of Tylenol or Advil-

type products. Together we can keep

Hartley healthy.

Occasionally students may need to

borrow clothes from the clinic. If this

is the case with your child, please

launder and return these items as

soon as possible.

BOX TOPS

Congratulations to MRS. JOYNER’S Third Grade Class. They have won the classroom box top contest by collecting 1,825 box tops. Hartley has collected over 14,000 box tops as a school! That’s over a $1,000.00 profit! We will have another school collection in the new year, so please continue to collect your box tops. Also, the box top bonus app has proven to be an extra way to earn bonus box top money. If you haven’t downloaded it, please do so today. Thank you for your support.

SHORT NOTES

Excellent attendance

Being in school every day means your child

wouldn’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule

appointments and family trips outside of school

hours. If he asks to stay home “just because,”

remind him of what he’ll miss, such as his

reading group or art class. Explain that he can be

absent only if he’s sick or if there’s a family

emergency.

Celebrate progress

Suggest that your youngster create a fun

reminder of all the things she has accomplished.

Let her cover a container with construction

paper and label it “I did it!” Then, she can

write each success (“I memorized my time

tables”) on a slip of paper and put it in the

container. If she’s feeling discouraged, have her

read the slips.

Worth quoting

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to

cheer somebody else up!”

Mark Twain

2016-17 Gifted Parent Advisory Council Meetings The Gifted Parent Advisory Council meets four times per year to inform the school district about ways in which we can improve our efforts in serving our gifted students. Parents of K-12 gifted students from throughout the district are encouraged to come to all of the meetings. The Gifted Parent Advisory Council meetings have been scheduled for the 2016-17 school year. We communicate this information for inclusion in school newsletters. We hope to make St Johns County Schools a parent friendly environment!

Blessings in a Backpack Program

I want to thank the Shores Methodist Church for their generosity and dedication in supporting the

Blessings in a Backpack Program at Hartley. For three years, they have donated 10 bags of nutritious

snacks each Friday which were given to our children to bring home and provide them with snacks for the

weekend. This year they have pledged to donate 15 bags per week. Please contact Brigid Garbini at 547-

8387 or [email protected] if you would like your child to participate in this program or if

your Church or community organization would like to help supply snacks for this program.

HALLOWEEN DENTAL TIPS: Increase oral hygiene during Halloween. An electric toothbrush is always better than a regular one. Floss all the teeth that are touching no matter the age. *Children are not great at brushing on their own until around 8. Flossing should also be assisted by a parent until around 10. *Toothbrushes should be sized for the child by their age along with age appropriate fluoride toothpaste. *Sealants are a protective coating on permanent molars that are a great preventive procedure to decrease the chances of cavities on the chewing surface.
