• Today’s game marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams, although No. 18-ranked Carson-Newman is no stranger to Barron Stadium. The Eagles have played six times and are 5-1 in Rome, the last win coming in 2005 when they defeated West Georgia.• The Hawks enter the game coming off a 41-0 Gulf South Conference defeat last week at home to North ALabama, while the Eagles downed South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill last week 43-27.• When the Hawks take the field, it will mark the 90th career game for head coach Phil Jones, all of them coming at Shorter where he began the program in 2005.• Both Shorter and Carson-Newman have each played Mars Hill this season, with the Hawks falling in their non-conference matchup with Mars Hill 41-30 on Sept. 12, while the Eagles rolled to a 43-27 win in an SAC showdown last week.• This is the third straight home game at Barron for the Hawks, who return to the road and their GSC schedule next Saturday playing Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. After recovering from a preseason injury, he has played in the last two games for the Hawks.

• SENIOR DE RICHARD HYDE: One of five fifth-year seniors on this year’s team, Hyde has taken an active reserve role with Shorter’s defense for the past four seasons. Ever since the day he first stepped foot on the campus at Shorter University, Phil Jones has made relationships as the cornerstone of the Hawks’ football program he was tasked to begin.

Nine years later that founda-tion remains firm and one that Jones – he begins his 45th year in coaching – continues to build upon as the head coach and his 2013 edition of the Hawks head into a challenging new season that will be the third and final year of Shorter’s transition towards becoming a full NCAA Division II member a year from now.

What the veteran coach has seen, however, is just how his team’s relationship with God and with each other has already produced results.

In their first full season as play-ing as a Division II program last year, the Hawks produced their sixth winning season in the eight years of the team’s existence re-cording a 6-5 overall record and, much to the surprise of many, a 2-3 record in the conference they are a part of – the nationally-known Gulf South Conference.

Included in that inaugural Division II sched-ule was a season-opening win over Division I FCS foe Campbell University a pair of back-to-back victories to end the year over GSC opponents West Georgia and Delta State.

Prior joining the NCAA Division II ranks, Shorter emerged in rapid fashion as one of the top NAIA Division I teams in the nation and produced some of the country’s top players.

Just three years after starting the team, Jones saw the 2008 Hawks put the program in the national spotlight, winning their first Mid-South Conference West Division championship rolling up a record nine wins – Shorter was ranked No. 11 in the final NAIA national poll – and securing their first postseason appearance by earning a berth in the NAIA National Playoffs.

For his work that season, Jones picked up a wealth of post-season awards including Mid-South Conference West Division Coach of the Year and American Football Coaches’ Asso-ciation (AFCA) Region I Coach of the Year.

But what Jones was most proud of came after he honored as the 2008 Grant Teaff

FCA National Coach of the Year, joining an elite class of honorees that includes Tommy Bowden, Sylvester Croom and Tommy Tuberville.

In 2009, Jones’ charges returned to the upper echelon of the national polls, climbing as high as No. 10 in the rat-ings and produced a pair of players who received postseason accolades. Shorter’s A.J. Cooley and Logan Lollis repeated as Mid-South Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, and were each honored as College Fanz NAIA All-Americans, while Cooley became Shorter’s first-ever AFCA All-America selection.

The next year saw the Hawks turn in several landmarks in the team’s brief history when they defeated eventual Mid-South East Division champion and three-time NAIA national champion Georgetown College for the first time in school history; boasted the nation’s No. 2 rushing attack at over 310 yards a game; set school records for rush-ing yards and total yards in a single game in a blowout win over nation-ally-ranked Webber International; and became a part of college football

history when they lined up in front of 30,237 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta against NCAA Division I Georgia State University in the Panthers’ first-ever game,

Jones made sure that Shorter’s final year as an NAIA program in 2011 would be just as memorable and the Hawks responded by remaining in contention for a conference title and a postseason berth until the final week of the season, and in the process saw a num-ber of players achieve postseason honors.

That year Shorter placed 12 players on the Mid-South All-Conference team, five of which were honored with first team nods. Linebacker Demery Hawkins, the confer-ence’s leading tackler, was named the Mid-South West Division Defensive Player of the Year and was also honored as the program’s second-ever AFCA All-American.

Linebacker Dominique Henfield picked up MSC West Division Freshman Defensive Player of the Year as well.

At the same time the Hawks were being noticed for their athletic ability on the field during Jones’ eight years, they were being recognized for their achievements off the field, where nearly 100 student-athletes have earned conference All-Academic team status.

Jones came to Shorter in 2005 from NCAA Division I-AA (now Football Championship Subdivision) Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. He served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs, who won back-to-back Big South Conference championships during his tenure. Prior to Gardner-Webb, Jones served as an assistant coach at South-ern Methodist University and coached under Jim Donnan at the University of Georgia from 1997-2001.

In addition to his collegiate coaching success, Jones coached Georgia high school football for 29 years, his last stop coming at Winder-Barrow High from 1984-97 where he led his teams to the playoffs eight times and compiling an 81-58-2 record in those 14 years. In 1993, Winder-Barrow advanced to the State AAA semifinals, earning Jones the honor of 1993 AAA Coach of the Year.

A native of Thomaston, Ga., Jones gradu-ated from Mercer University in 1968. He and his wife, Janie, have two children and five grandchildren.

ROME, Ga. – The North Alabama Lions made sure their offense was clicking on all cylinders Saturday at Barron Stadium where the homestanding Shorter Hawks were never able to get theirs untracked.

In a Gulf South Conference clash in which both teams were hoping to stop a losing streak, the Lions rolled up 469 yards in total offense as they roared to a 41-0 win over the Hawks.

The setback leaves Shorter 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the GSC heading into a non-conference meeting next Saturday at Barron against South Atlantic Conference power and No. 20-ranked Carson-New-man, while North Alabama ends a two-game losing run to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, and did so combining a well-balanced attack as the Lions finished the game rushing for 237 yards and passing for another 232 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Wingo ended the game throwing for 129 yards and a touchdown, while his backup, Jacob Tucker, made the most of his playing time leading the Lions by rushing for 82 yards and two touchdowns and passing for another 103 yards.

The Hawks, who entered the game av-eraging more than 300 yards, were kept in check and were held to 178 total yards.

Shorter opened the game driving the ball to the Lions’ 46 before being forced to punt, with the Lions taking over at their own 19.

From there it didn’t take North Ala-bama long to go the distance with the big blow coming on the final play of the brief 81-yard march when Wingo found Jason Smith open behind the Shorter secondary for a 55-yard touchdown pass with 8:39 to go in the opening period. Will Craig added the first of five extra points.

The Lions added three more points on the board before the first quarter was over, this time moving from their own 46 to the Shorter 35 where Craig split the uprights for the first time in his career kicking a 42-yard field goal to give his team a 10-0 lead.

Shorter’s defense stood its ground for most of the second period, with Santavi-

ous Bryant recovering a fumble to end a UNA drive at the Hawks’ 13 midway through the second quarter and with 1:48 to go until halftime Austin Ingram inter-cepted a pass by Wingo at the Shorter 29 to thwart another drive by the Lions.

But when the Hawks’ offense was un-able to take advantage of the turnover, a 49-yard punt return Philbert Martial to the Shorter 43 set the Lions up for the final score of the half when UNA – a pass interference penalty of Shorter in the end zone set up the visitors at the Hawks 2 – broke into the end zone as time expired thanks to a 2-yard run by Wingo that gave his team the 17-0 lead.

The Hawks ended the first half manag-ing just 80 yards in total offense, while

North Alabama reeled off 217 yards.When the second half began, the Lions

continued their offensive juggernaut when on the opening series UNA went 66 yards in nine plays take a 24-0 lead, and in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter made it 27-0 when Craig hit a 30-yard field goal.

The Lions added two more touchdowns, both coming from Tucker who scored on a 6-yard run with 7:23 left and then on a 3-yard run that closed out the scoring with 4:20 remaining.

Freshman fullback B.J. McCoy led the Hawks on the ground gaining 59 yards on 11 carries, while junior quarterback Eric Dodson completed 5 of 8 passes for 71 yards.

• PREP TEAMMATES MEET: When Shorter senior wide receiver Kareem Hawkins lines up this afternoon, he will be do so opposite Eagle sophomore cornerback Dante’ Thomas. The two are both graduates of Dalton High where they played for the Catamounts.

• RUSHING UP THE LIST: Shorter senior fullback Bradley Moon needs just seven more yards to step into the No. 4 spot in career yards. Moon, who has rushed for 257 yards this season, now has 1,380 career yards. Ahead of him is Raymone Nesbitt (1,386 from 2005-08) and at No. 3 is Fabian Daniel (1,621, 2007-07).

• POISED TO SET A MARK: Quarter-back Eric Dodson’s 71 passing yards against North Alabama pushed the junior into the No. 2 position for ca-reer yards in the Shorter record book. Dodson has thrown for 512 yards this season that gives him 1,488 yards for his career, passing the Hawks first-ever quarterback, Alex Williams (2005-06.) Dodson is just 16 yards away from passing Ben Williams to become the program’s all-time leader.

• OUT OF SYNC: Shorter’s offense have fallen into a rare slump in the last two games as the Hawks have been kept out of the end zone in seven straight quarters. The last time the Hawks scored a touchdown came late in the first quarter against West Georgia when junior Devin Helvie ran for a 24-yard touchdown that gave Shorter a 14-7 lead. Helvie, the lone experienced slotback on the field as the team was without the services of injured seniors Roderick Jones and Kirk Wilson, was lost for the season in the second quarter. Since then, Shorter has been outscored 65-0.

• GROUND BATTLE: Looking at what Shorter and Carson-Newman do on offense, today’s first meeting between the Hawks and Eagles could become a test of who has the best ground game. Each team will be using an option attack, though from differ-ent sets with the Hawks operating from a Wing-T base and the Eagles lin-ing up in a Split Back look. After turn-ing in a season-low 107 yards rushing last week against North Alabama, Shorter saw its yards-per-game aver-age fall to 184 yards; the Eagles aver-age a healthy 347 yards a game, No. 4 nationally in the Division II ranks.

Games To Remember

The Shorter defense has certainly evolved into one of the youngest ones the Hawks have fielded in recent years as was evident last week when they squared off against North Alabama in a Gulf South Conference clash with just four seniors in the starting lineup, defensive end Jamal Denson, cornerback Austin Ingram, bandit Zach Mann and strong safety Kendall Lacey. The one junior of the starting unit was linebacker Domi-nique Henfield, but the remaining positions were filled by five sophomores - defensive tackle Howard Stephens, nose tackle Greg Carswell, linebacker Luke Wilson, rover San-tavious Bryant and free safety Reggie Brown - and freshman cornerback Willy Dorcin.

Youthful Defenders

Filling in the SlotsWith three of the most seasoned slotbacks the Hawks have out due to injuries, some

new faces have appeared at the position that is a cornerstone of Shorter’s option of-fense.

Two Hawks transitioned themselves from the defensive side of the ball as corner-backs to the offense to help out - red-shirt sophomore Wesley Clay, who made the move two weeks ago against West Georgia and became the first Shorter player to play offense and defense in one game, and senior Michael Peeples. Also making the move was senior Bradley Moon, who began the game as the Hawks’ starting fullback for the 16th straight game but saw action at the slot. Last week against GSC foe North Ala-bama, Moon rushed for 25 yards on 10 carries in a dual role and Clay had 12 yards on four carries.

Against West Georgia, Shorter junior Devin Helvie was lost for the season with a broken foot, while seniors Roderick Jones and Kirk Wilson have been sidelined for the past two games with shoulder injuries but hope to resume action soon. Last year the trio combined to give the Hawks 550 rushing yards.


Shorter University is entering its third and final year of transitioning toward becoming an NCAA Division II member. In July, the NCAA gave Shorter its approval to be a provisional member during the 2013-14 academic year and once the university meets all the requirements it will assume full mem-bership status on Sept. 1, 2014.

Shorter is also a member of the Gulf South Con-ference, and once it becomes a full NCAA member next year will become eligible for postseason play and player honors.

In addition, Shorter is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association and will serve as host of this year’s NCCAA Victory Bowl.

Conference, the Hawks not only proved they could compete on the field but can hold their own in the classroom as 25 players earned a spot on the GSC’s Fall 2012 Academic Honor Roll. To be nominated for GSC Academic Honor Roll honors, a student-athlete must have played during the Fall Sports Season with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —The Gulf South Confer-ence’s top ranked team’s notched league wins last week, setting up a much-anticipated GSC-TV matchup this Thursday.

No. 14 West Alabama (4-1, 2-0) kicked off last week, hosting Thursday’s GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week. UWA turned-in a dominate perfor-mance on both sides of the ball, scoring 45 un-answered points en route to a 48-14 home vic-tory over Delta State (3-2, 2-1). The Tigers held DSU to minus-seven yards rushing route to their first-ever GSC-TV triumph versus the Statesmen.

No. 1 Valdosta State (4-0, 2-0) remained per-fect on the season, celebrating Homecoming by cruising past Florida Tech (1-4, 0-3) on Sat-urday, 52-14. VSU found the end zone in all three phases of the game, scoring four offensive touchdowns, two more on defense and one more on special teams. The Blazers stretched their winning streak to 14 dating back to 2012.

All eyes will be trained towards Livingston, AL on Thursday when Valdosta State and West Alabama lock horns in Game Seven of the 2013 GSC-TV Game of the Week.

North Alabama (2-2, 1-1) secured its first Con-ference victory of the season, traveling to post its second straight shutout of Provisional mem-ber Shorter (0-5, 0-3). UNA earned its first road decision of the season by posting a 41-0 final against SU for the second year in a row.

West Georgia (4-1, 1-0) stepped back out of league action, celebrating Homecoming at NAIA member Point University’s expense, 49-3. The Wolves moved to 4-1 for the first time since 2001, rolling up over 600 yards of total offense for just the second time in school history.

2013 SHORTER HAWKS GAME NOTES 2013 Opponent Outlook

The Victory Bowl is the champion-ship football game between schools that sponsor football and are the top-ranked members of the National Christian College Athletic As-sociation and did not qualify for either the NCAA or NAIA play-offs. It is one of the few post-season bowl games for smaller schools.

Because the NCCAA is not exclusive, it is possible that schools from the NAIA and the NCAA may meet each other in this game.

In addition to the game, other activities include community service projects that involve players and coaches from both teams

Last May, the NC-CAA announced that Shorter University will host the Victory Bowl for the next three years at Barron Stadium in Rome. In addition, Shorter and the Rome Host Committee entered into a three-year deal to host the NCCAA National Track and Field Championships at Barron.

2013 SHORTER HAWKS GAME NOTES History Against Opponents


Home of the Hawks, historyBarron Stadium is part of

the beautiful West Third Street Complex along with Memorial Gym, Fitness Plus Sports and Fitness Center, John Maddox Track, Gymnastics Center and an award-winning 16 court Tennis Center and skateboarding/in-line skating areas.

The complex hosts Shorter Hawks and Rome Wolves Foot-ball and Track events, Peach State Band Festival, Rome Relays Invitational Track Meet, and sanctioned Tennis Tourna-ments. The stadium’s capacity is about 6,500 people.

Competition has been played at these fields for more than 100 years. The area started out as a Textile League baseball field for the Rome Hilltoppers. The game of baseball was a passion among mill workers who could make more money playing baseball than many workers who had professional jobs in the city.

Owners understood the game also offered participants preparation for working at

the mill. Baseball provided an atmosphere to teach respect for authority. It taught self-control, discipline and increased em-ployee morale. It also provided a place for people to socialize after work.

On September 21, 1925, the park was renamed from Ham-ilton Field to Barron Stadium. This was to honor William F. Barron for his contribution towards acquiring the property.

William Barron, whose father F.S. Barron first bottled and distributed Coca-Cola in Rome in 1901, was dedicated completely to the progress of the region.

Between 1928 and 1929, the field was changed from a base-ball to a football park.

The current stadium was

completed in 1967 with many upgrades coming over the fol-lowing years.

Barron Stadium was the first to receive a reslite surface, an all-weather rubber asphalt sur-facing for running tracks and other sports areas. It is consid-ered to be one of the best track venues in the South.

On March 30, 2001, Lee Mow-ry Press Box was completed. Lee Mowry, a broadcaster who spent 40 years covering sports in Greater Rome, was a Marine who fought in Iwo Jima.

Barron Stadium underwent a multi-million dollar renova-tion in the Summer of 2010, a project that included the instal-lation of a state-of-the-art syn-thetic turf surface, renovations to the locker room and shower

facilities, increased seating ca-pacity and the installation of a state-of-the-art, Beynon Sports Surfaces, eight-lane track that allowed Shorter to host track meets for the first time in the history of its program in 2012.

Since the renovations, Shorter track has hosted nu-merous events; including, the Rome/Shorter Relays, Peach Belt Conference Chamionship, and Southern States Athletic Conference Championship.

This past spring, the Nation-al Christian College Athletic Association announced that Barron would be the site of the NCCAA Victory Bowl football game and the NCCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships for tthe next three years.

The stadium also includes a newly-designed press box, locker room facilities for two teams, concession areas on both the home and visitor sides, side coaching boxes and training rooms.
