Six Days War1967 - Invasion by Egypt, Jordan, and Syria

After Israel wins, Arab nations issue the "Three No's"1. No recognition of Israel2. No negotiations with Israel3. No peace with Israel

Led by Yasir Arafat, the PLO called

for the destrucon of Israel

Suicide bombers blow up houses,

buses, stores, businesses, etc.

Obstacles to Peace

Mistrust between all groups

Palestinians want the "right to return"

Jews in Israel know this would create Palestinians in a Jewish nation

Radical Islamic groups have joined the Palestinian fight

These groups condemn the USA and any country helping Israel

Syria has a very diverse populaon

of cultures and religions

It has historically been ruled by

totalitarian dictators

The current leader is Bashar al-

Assad

Pro-democrac protests were met

with brutal force and led to civil

war

The Syrian Civil War

Islamic FundamentalismThe Islamic radical movement is partly a response to the rise of

Western culture and secular governments in many Muslim naons

A backlash against foreign support for Israel and foreign powers in

the Middle East

For some, terrorism is “jihad” or holy war to defend Islam

Al Qaeda

Best known Islamic terrorist organizaon

Founder is Osama bin Laden

He has called for the overthrow of un-Islamic governments and the

expulsion on non-Muslims from Muslim countries

Al Qaeda built a global network to train and finance terrorist acvity

On September 11, 2001 Al Qaeda hijacked four airliners and crashed them

into buildingshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kct2DgQQN5w

US Response to Terrorism

In the ensuing war between the US and Afghanistan, the

Taliban was overthrown and Al Qaeda was hunted down.

Bin Laden was found in Pakistan in 2011 and killed

Even as fighng has connued, NATO forces have ended combat in 2014.
