A NOTE FROM JWOWW “Just because I have chosen this lifestyle

doesn’t mean that readers should. I am not a role model! The publisher and author advocate safety when it comes to drinking and sex and specifically disclaim any and all liability for any outcomes, consequences, and damages (including property damage, physical injury, or death) that may occur as a result of attempting any of the activities described in this book.”

– Jenni “JWOWW” Farley

JENNI “JWOWW” FARLEY Jenni "JWOWW" Farley, 25, is

originally from upstate New York and later moved to Long Island, New York. She studied Computer Programming for 3 years followed by 4 years of Graphic Design.  Later, she opened her own Graphic Design business, Jenni Farley Designs Inc. In between her studies, she worked in clubs and conquered the "club scene" in the Tri-state area before moving down to the Jersey Shore and Miami.

INTRODUCTION AND THESIS This book offers a detailed guide that a girl should live

by in order to land the perfect guy.  JWOWW provides self-tested rules that deal with being on the prowl, dating, relationships, break ups, fashion, body, beauty, and "smushing." Some of these rules include the correct way to dress in order for a man to notice you, how to keep your man from cheating, how to deal with breakups, etc.  It also includes a recipe so you can cook for your man and a workout plan so you can stay in shape for your man, and yourself.

The main thesis of this book is to guide girls in the dating world and give advice on dealing with all of the ups and downs that go along with it.

RULE #1“YOU GOTTA BE IN IT TO WIN IT” Girls have to get themselves out there in

“the scene.” The book suggests bars and clubs.

“Besides, what other options do you have? Well let’s see…[you] could try to find your match online—because anyone halfway decent is gonna hide behind a keyboard and call himself ‘2Hot4U.’ I know a lot of people are into online dating and would disagree with me on this, but I think it should be a last resort” (Farley, 2011, p. 17).

IS IT TRUE? Research both agrees and disagrees. To date: no legitimate, peer-reviewed,

scholarly article that shows the statistics of success rates in online dating.

According to Viegas (2010), “statistics on the success of online dating remain questionable, but research has shown that if people can navigate the sometimes murkey arena of online dating, it can prove to be a helpful tool for finding life partners.”

According to Egan (2003) with the New York Times, “a consumer behavior on the Internet reported 40 million Americans visited at least on online dating site in August – 27 percent of all Internet users for that month.

Egan (2003) also points out, “The societal reasons for this fury of activity are so profound that it's almost surprising that online dating didn't take off sooner: Americans are marrying later and so are less likely to meet their spouses in high school or college.”

-A response from an interview conducted in Viegas’ article complements this statement:-Her place of work results in having contact with mostly gay men.-Online dating can be beneficial when one has exhausted their usual social circles.

RULE # 26“A GUY’S BRAINS ARE LOCATED BELOW THE BELT”

Men only think with their penis, meaning all they want is sex.

Physical attraction is most important.

“Let me be perfectly clear on this: a man thinks with his penis and is always on a quest for one thing and thing only: sex. Once you grasp this concept and make peace with it, you will understand what makes him do the things he does. You are not dealing with a rational-behaving individual. You’re dealing with a dick. This is why you always have to be on top of your game physically and emotionally.” (Farley, 2011, p. 83).

Page 8: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

IS IT TRUE? Research agrees.

According to the article, Beliefs About Men: Gender Differences Among College Students, 54% of men reported that they think about sex several times a day. Men also reported higher rates of masturbation, more sexual partners, and being motivated to engage in sexual intercourse for sexual pleasure, conquest, and a relief of sexual tension. (Knox, Mcneely, & Zusman, 2004).

RESEARCH FROM 1986 TO 2004

In 1986, physical attractiveness was only the 4th most important quality in selecting a mate. In 2004, according to Beliefs About Men: Gender Differences Among College Students, men highly stress the importance of the physical appearance of a woman. 3000 people were interviewed and the research found that men ranked physical attractiveness as the most important quality in selecting a mate. (Knox, Mcneely, & Zusman, 2004).

RULE #33“YOU GOTTA GET BACK IN THE GAME SOMETIME.. DATE ONE OF HIS FRIENDS”

Dating your ex’s best friend is great revenge. It will get your ex jealous and make you feel

triumphant.

“Nothing makes a girl feel more appreciated than two men punching each other in the face over her! In terms of the friend you befriended.. I don’t suggest keeping the guy around long term, just long enough to see your ex cry in his beer. Keep it cool and casual, except for the make-out session a few feet from where your former dirtbag is standing” (Farley, 2011, p. 121).

Page 11: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

IS IT TRUE? Research disagrees.

According to The Breakup of Romantic Relationships: Situational Predictors of Perception of Recovery, a healthier breakup consists of staying away from your ex.

A healthy breakup also goes hand in hand with social support and family.

You can feel more triumphant and over your ex by using healthier methods. (Hackney, Locker, & McIntosh, 2010).

The article also states that people who see their ex’s have more difficulty getting over them.

Why risk this just to hook up with your ex’s best friend in front of him?

RULE #18“MAKE HIM PAY” If a guy likes you, he’ll always be willing

to pay. No cheap guy will ever make a good

boyfriend.

“If he is interested, he is interested enough to ensure you eat well and get home safely in a cab. No cheap bastard makes a good boyfriend. Even though it’s 2011, that doesn’t mean a guy can’t pay for dinner” (Farley, 2011, p. 69).

IS IT TRUE? According to the article,

It’s complicated: Who pays on dates, an msnbc.com survey of about 74,000 online readers found that 2/3 of guys want girls to help with the check, and 57% of women always offer to pay, and 46% of these woman are bothered if the man refuses her offer. Also, a third of women believe that they should pay more of the dating expenses if they earn more money than a guy. (Persch, 2008).

RESULTS The data we found both supports and refutes the

data used to support the book thesis.

This book is helpful in some ways. For example, JWOWW gives great tips for a healthy diet, an exercise plan, how to present yourself in a classy way, and to treat people the way you want to be treated.

JWOWW is not properly trained to write a self-help book. She has a graphic design business; she doesn’t have a significant professional experience with studying relationships. She gives her advice based on personal experience.

Page 15: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

DISCUSSION/CONLUSION Through searching scholarly articles, we

have found that many of JWOWW’s tips are not supported by data collected.

This leads to the conclusion that JWOWW based her tips solely on personal experiences, not on if they worked for a large sample, let alone a few other people.

Page 16: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION JWOWW’s rule about how the men should always pay

on a date does not match our data found. We found that many men expect the women to help them out with the bill and that more than half of women offer to pay.

JWOWW had a rule that online dating is not the way to land a man. We have found some data that concludes that many adults are finding their mates through online dating. There are some findings, however, that show that online dating is not always reliable.

We also found data that did not support JWOWW’s rule about dating your ex’s best friend. Data found that support from friends and family was the best way to cope.

Page 17: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION JWOWW’S book ranged from how to get over a guy, get

yourself in shape, and land a guy. A book with such a wide variety would be hard to write with all accurate data collections.

If an author wanted to rewrite this book with proper large data sampling, the writer would have to have accurate data in all three areas.

An author might want to divide the book into three separate novels in order to thoroughly and correctly write each tip.

Many of JWOWW’s unsupported tips would have to be left out.

The problem of getting over breakups does exist. The issue of who pays the bill is not exactly a problem. The problem of finding a guy may not exist at all! Online

dating may or may not be a problem depending on personal preference.

Page 18: Shore Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb Liz Salner – salnere1@mail.montclair.edusalnere1@mail.montclair.edu

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION The data in JWOWW’s book may not be

very reliable due to the fact that it was based on personal experience.

This does not mean her tips may never work. However, it means that for the majority population, they do not work.

This also does not mean that all of JWOWW’s tips were unsupported, however, the ones we chose to focus on were.
