It looks like this summer will be another hot one … although probably not for the economy. Most financial forecasters are predicting that tough times will continue

through the next few months. But that doesn’t need to ruin your summer. Here are some ways to save money – and have some fun – in the summertime. Vacation 2009: The More the Merrier (and Cheaper). This could be the summer for a real family vacation. Particularly if you’re driving on vacation this year and have some extra room in the car, minivan or RV, consider inviting relatives or friends to join you. Not only is it a great way to spend time with people you love, but you can save some serious money by splitting the cost of gas, camping fees, cottage rentals, admission fees, etc. It’s a perfect way for kids to spend time with their grandparents or for old college friends to reconnect for a cost-conscious summer road trip. Think of it as the “cheaper by the dozen” approach to planning a vacation. Mentor a Young Entrepreneur. When it comes to spending time with your children or grandchildren this summer, it doesn’t need to cost money, it might even make money. Help the kids in your life start a business of their own this summer. Choose something that’s enjoyable for everybody and that you can work on together, like growing a garden and selling the produce at a roadside stand, having yard sales, or starting a pet walking/sitting business. It will teach your kids valuable lessons about work, responsibility and money, and it will also put some cash in their pockets that might otherwise have to come from you. Cut the Grass. Nobody loves their lawns like we Americans. But between the water they require, the pesticides, fertilizers and pollutant spewing four-cycle lawn mowers, our lawns really aren’t as green as they look. They’re tough on the environment and tough on our wallets: lawn care is now a $12 billion annual industry in the U.S. Get rid of your lawn or even reduce its size by returning it to nature, mulching or planting no maintenance ground covers like pachysandra or creeping thyme. It’ll no only help save the planet and keep more green in your wallet, but think of all the free time you’ll have since you don’t have to cut the grass. Cool It on the AC. U.S. homeowners spend more than $15 billion a year on the electricity their air conditioners suck up. A do-it-

yourself energy audit (www.energysavers.gov) will give you a plan of attack for lowering your AC costs through better insulation, replacing and cleaning outdated equipment, and other alternatives to AC inside and outside your home, like ceiling fans, cross ventilation, and shading your house with landscaping. Keeping your house even a couple of degrees warmer during the summer can save you big money on your electric bill. Stay in School. It may not sound like much fun, but if you’re a college student, think seriously about taking classes this summer. Most college instructors will tell you that summer classes are often less demanding on students, in part because of shorter sessions, which means that you can take a hefty course load and be that much closer to graduating. At some schools, tuition and other fees for summer sessions are lower as well. Although you might not be able to handle a summer job if you’re going to school fulltime, by being able to graduate in three years instead of four, you’ll be entering your career field that much sooner and, hopefully, start earning significantly more than you’ll make flipping burgers during the summer.

You’ve paid off the college bills, helped with setting up an apartment and proudly listened as your once adorable toddler talked about career moves. You’re tempted to sit back, heave a sigh of relief and

relax in the knowledge that your child is now a financially independent adult. Adult, yes—but financially independent? That may be another story, especially today. Recently, a Young Adults & Money survey suggested that 49 percent of 23- to 28-year-olds still rely on their parents for some sort of financial support. Interestingly, last year’s Parents & Money survey indicated that 34 percent of parents anticipated having to support the young adults in their lives in some way. Taken together, these statistics underline the ongoing role parents play in their kids’ financial lives. I often talk about the importance of early financial education, teaching young children to set goals, save, manage an allowance and handle credit cards. And according to this year’s survey, 56 percent of young adults attribute their knowledge of money management basics to their parents. However, it’s also significant that 43 percent say they continue to turn to their parents for ongoing financial advice. Which means, as a parent, you still have the opportunity to help your adult kids learn and practice responsible money management.

FiLLing in THe FinanCiaL gapS • Talk about monthly budgeting. Discuss where the shortfalls are, and help come up with ideas on where to cut back. Suggest an online budgeting tool that can be updated easily. For instance, mint.com is one example of online help—and can be especially helpful for someone just starting to get a handle on their finances. If you’re comfortable doing so, use your own budget as an example. How do you manage it? What’s your routine? Do you pay bills online? Use a program like Quicken to keep track? Sharing your ideas and experience on the practical side of money management can be just as valuable as writing a check—in the long run, maybe more. • Ask about credit card debt. This is a big one. Respondents to the Young Adults & Money survey on average carried more than $14,000 in debt (excluding mortgages), and only 33 percent paid off their balance each month. Suggest guidelines. One good rule of thumb is that all housing costs (mortgage or rent, insurance, property taxes) shouldn’t exceed 28 percent of gross income; housing plus all consumer debt should be no more than 36 percent of gross income. Reinforce the importance of not carrying a balance, and help with debt consolidation ideas if necessary.

• Review insurance options: health insurance, car insurance and renter’s insurance. There are so many questions here: What type is needed? How much is enough? Show your kids your own insurance choices and talk about why you made them. Discuss different companies and ratings. This information isn’t taught anywhere else. Discuss savings goals, particularly the importance of saving for retirement. Offer to review a 401(k) plan, or help set up an IRA and give suggestions on how much to contribute. (Saving 10 percent of their annual salary for retirement is a good starting point for people in their 20s.) • Get specific about taxes. The amount the IRS takes can come as a surprise, especially if someone has a contract or freelance job where taxes aren’t withheld. A word of advice now can help a young person set aside money for taxes on a regular basis when necessary and avoid an unexpected tax bill come April 15.

When it comes to money, the truly crucial part you play as a parent is that of educator and role model.

FINANCEBy Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

• Explore investing opportunities together. With so much happening in today’s markets, now would be a great time to talk about risk and the pros and cons of different types of investments, from stocks to CDs.

Keeping THe Door open Money can be a tough topic to bring up with your grown kids, especially if they’re having problems. Keeping the door open for discussion is the first step in helping them handle their daily concerns — and make smart decisions in the future. With our economic woes so much in the headlines, you have a perfect opening to bring up financial issues, and find out what’s on everyone’s mind and what type of information would be helpful. Then you can work together to answer questions, come up with positive plans and help each other feel more financially prepared. The more open and honest you are about your own finances—and nonjudgmental about theirs—the more receptive your kids are likely to be. A s a Coupon Queen, part of my job is to share the best secrets for saving on your grocery bill with coupons. But are you ready for one of the biggest secrets of all?

Surprisingly, this one does not involve a single coupon … The day of the week we shop makes a huge difference how much money we can save. To understand this tip, consider this: Many grocery stores run two sales cycles each week. One flier comes out on Thursday and runs for seven days. This is the “long” cycle, which runs Thursday to Wednesday. But the same stores often have a second sales flier that comes out on Sundays and runs for four days. This is the “short” cycle, which runs Sunday to Wednesday. Now, look at a calendar and pay attention to the days. There are four days each week when both cycles and sales fliers overlap: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If your store participates in two sales cycles, these are the days you want to shop in order to maximize your savings. By shopping Monday through Wednesday, you gain the advantage of two concurrent sales rather than just one. Why do stores do this? Look at the remaining three days in the week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. These are busy days for a grocery store. Statistically speaking, they’re also the days people are most likely to shop without much forethought. The weekend is approaching, the workweek is almost done and people head to the store. By contrast, when Sunday rolls around and the new week arrives, store traffic drops off. The store issues more sales and more deals on those days in order to drive traffic back into the store. These are the days we want to shop! People often ask me how many times I’m at the grocery store during the week (I can’t imagine why, but many people are under the impression that I practically live there!) The truth is much less exciting. I really do shop just once a week. But I always shop on one of days when both sales fliers are active. Another reason to shop earlier in the week is that stores will raise prices on many items later in the week. My store recently had a sale on a brand-name cereal. At $1.25 a box, it was already a great price; with a $1 coupon, I took it home for a quarter. That sale ran Sunday through Wednesday. On Thursday, the same cereal was still on “sale,” but the new sale price? $2.50 a box. The price doubled in one day! This is one of those games the stores play, too. The same items may be on sale, but the sale price is a lot less attractive as the higher-traffic shopping days approach.

If you never clipped a single coupon, you would save a great deal of money just by shopping earlier in the week. If I had purchased my cereal on Thursday instead of Wednesday, I would have paid twice the price! Now, think about many other items in the grocery store take similar jumps in prices as the end of the week nears, and you’ll see why it makes sense to shop on the days the sales overlap. If you need even more convincing, consider what happens when the same product is on sale in both sales fliers. I’ve seen crackers on sale for $1.99 in the long-cycle flier while in the short cycle flier; the same crackers were on sale Buy One, Get One Free! The smart shopper who is in the store on the days that the sales overlap, will not only get the crackers for $1.99, they’ll take home a second package for free. And if they use a coupon on each box … Oh, the possibilities!

P lanning on vacationing this year? Knowing you’ve created a family vacation that will not only bring smiles to the faces of your clan, but also leave you free of burdensome debt is worth every ounce

of time you’ll put into planning. Allow me to gently guide you into the unknown world of the frugal vacationer; a place where no family goes without a splashy summer excursion, a place where keen strategy reigns and overpriced admission-fees die, only in The Travel Tightwad Zone... Plan ahead. The main ingredient for debt-free vacation success is planning and saving well in advance of the actual trip. My husband and I recently took a trip to South Dakota. We saved for many months until we mustered up $1,000. Budgeting for our one-week trip according to the amount of money we had helped us to come back from the trip with money in our pockets. Go to a state that touches yours. Don’t think you can afford a vacation across the world? How about across the state? By driving a few hours to a bordering city in another state, you can get the feel of an

exciting adventure with little time and monetary commitment. Spring for the kitchenette. By booking either a kitchenette hotel room or choosing a small housekeeping cabin, you will have the freedom of grocery shopping when you arrive at your vacation spot. This will enable you to be in full control of how much you eat out. Of course, you’ll still want to indulge in a restaurant or two, but doing most of the cooking in your room will end up saving you tons of cash. Yet another miserly twist, be sure to bring along an ice chest and an electric frying pan. Some motels offer small refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms as well. Do your homework and opt for foods which are a bit easier to cook—you are on vacation, after all! Plan for only one admission-based activity. Our family opted to visit South Dakota for its unique Reptile Gardens facility. We purposefully planned our week stay and included only two admission-based activities on our itinerary. We enjoyed cave-discovering hikes, traveled the streets of local historic towns, and were even blessed with

planning a Frugal Family Vacation

The main ingredient for debt-free vacation success is planning and saving well in advance of the actual trip.

a binocular view of ten prancing deer running along the base of the beautiful South Dakota mountains—all completely free! Get in that car and go! The cost of gas is certainly much less than the cost of your entire family’s airline tickets. For a ten-hour drive round-trip, you may have to fill your gas tank only 6-7 times. Compare this cost to the average airline ticket price of $350 per person. If the wear and tear on your vehicle really bugs you, renting a car is still a cost-effective way to travel by highway. Road trips also allow you to see many things you would certainly miss from the sky. Stay in your own state. Don’t forget the wonderful tourist possibilities in remote locations of your very own state. There are bound to be attractions in tiny towns you’ve never been to, or better yet , never even heard of! In my opinion, the smaller and older the town, the better. Many local cities offer unique namesakes such as “Home of the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine.” Now, how many people can say they’ve traveled from afar to see that? Take a mini-vacation. Our family thoroughly enjoys what we like to term mini-vacations. These are simply one-night stays in any city and in any hotel with a swimming pool. Even if you are only a few miles away from home, just being out of your native environment for one measly night has the ability to revive the spirit. This type of vacation is perfect for a winter getaway. Pitch a tent. If we are wise with our spending, camping trips can be a very economical way to vacation. Compare $15 per night of tenting to $65 per night in the cheapest motel, and you’ve got yourself a deal! If you are not fully equipped with all the gear you’ll need to camp, ask friends and family if they wouldn’t mind lending you their equipment for your tree-hugging excursion. Chances are that their gear has remained untouched in their attic or garage for a long time, so offer a trade-off. Surf the Web for flight deals. If you decide to fly, don’t forget to use the Internet to uncover some terrific deals on airline tickets. I have personally used Priceline.com to name my own price on $150 round-trip tickets from Minnesota to Nevada and back again numerous times. The more willing you are to make connections, the more flexible your arrival and departure dates, the better chance you have to secure a whopper of a bargain. Ditch the souvenirs, would ya? How many times have you received a well-intentioned can-cooler plastered with the name of a recently visited city from relatives? Now, be honest, how many of you have felt the pangs of guilt as you slyly continued to scoot the nude-woman-silhouette-sporting Key West seashell further and further out of eyesight until it accidentally fell off the table? (Oops!) The internal pressure we feel to bring something back to friends and family is real, but let’s do them a favor this year and opt for sending the 25 cent postcard. Your pals and relatives can send their thank you cards directly to me. Vacationing this summer does not have to send you dipping into the 401K. If we take a little time to plot and drop some of our old “I want it this way or else!” habits, it is very possible to travel without racking up the credit cards. Use the advice above to get your mind started in a frugal-vacation-thinking kind of way and then come up with new ideas! Bon voyage! nSS

Spring is finally here, and summer is coming up fast. Ladies, it is crunch time to update your spring and summer look with the latest trends from the Spring/Summer 2009 runway season.

Spring and summer fashion and beauty have returned to a simpler aesthetic that appeals to all sizes and walks of life. Shirts. Trends in spring shirts focus on the most prevalent trend of the season: fabric manipulation. Ruffles are a great example of this trend. This ultra-feminine design detail is found mainly around sleeves, necklines and hems to make any woman look sweet and coquettish. Some of the more daring and flirty uses of ruffles are found along the neckline creating a flounce effect that softens any look. Pants. This spring, pants will stay monochromatic in lighter hues for the daytime. Loose silhouettes complement the flouncy feel of the popular ruffled shirts. Fabrics range from lightweight denims to sheer silks in full leg and cropped styles. Dresses. The trendy dresses of the Spring/Summer 2009 season are simply breathtaking. With an ethereal feel that brings to mind the song “Earth Angel,” the dresses of the season leave no doubt that femininity is still alive and well. Incorporating an empire waist and Grecian influence, dresses in light weight silks are fitted at the bust and cascade freely to the floor. Beachwear. Beachwear trends for the summer encompass three of the four top trends for the season. Bikinis in colorful graphic and optical prints abound this season. One pieces and cover-ups are vibrant in light colors or white with smocked, shirred and gathered detailing. Accessories. The trendy

accessories of the season range from bold metallics to fun graphic and pop art prints.

The shoes and leather handbags of the season made beautiful use of

satchels bring added fun to the flirty feminine trend of the season.

BeauTy TrenDS Hairstyles. Hair this spring fit into two basic categories: long, loose curls or waves and hair that is pulled back into a bun or ponytail. The most stunning is the loose and tousled waves that graced runway shows of designers like Ralph Lauren. However, the bun and ponytail are by far the easier looks to achieve this season. This look can be made to appear gracefully undone with a few strands hanging loose or it can be neat and sleek. Makeup. Three easy makeup looks arose this spring and all are based

from the main look of the season: The Fresh Face. The fresh faced look is makeup applied to look as natural as possible. It is best to use colors that mimic the way you naturally blush, and the way your skin tans during the summer. Colors that mimic these hues in your skin are your personal natural palette. The second makeup look for spring focuses on the eyes. A more dramatic eye with minimal color for the rest of the face is a great spring evening look. One option is to forgo eye shadow and go for heavily lined eyes. Heavily lined eyes with pale cheeks and lips go great with a ponytail or bun hairstyle. The second option is a smoky look for the eyes. Dusky pinks, smoky mauves and taupes paired with peachy cheeks and salmon lips look great this season. The last great beauty look of the season is the classic red lip. Red lips, which typically are a fall look, have emerged as a darling for spring. Red lips paired with a fresh face give a dramatic and beautiful pop of color. Overall, this spring and summer will be full of trends the average woman will be happy to wear. While a whole new wardrobe may be out of the question, purchasing a few of the trends from this season will certainly add value to your look. Don’t forget that the natural and “fresh-faced” beauty trends are much kinder to your wallet. So take a look around and dare to be flirty and fresh this season. nSS
