The Plank-Top Workbench inissue No. 75 will work fine in

most workshops. If you need some-thing smaller, all you have to do isshorten up the stretchers and cleats.

A Longer Workbench – But ifyou’d like a longer workbench, you’llwant to consider adding some addi-tional support for the top, like yousee in the drawing below for a 12'-long plank-top workbench.

The additional support is providedby adding a center assembly. Thenice thing is this center assembly isidentical to the end assemblies. Soyou don’t have to worry about anydifferent parts or measurements.

Work on the Stretchers – Onceyou have the end and center assem-blies complete, you can work on thelonger stretchers. What’s differenthere is that to fit the center assemblyin place, you’ll need to cut a centeredhalf lap on the inside face of each ofthe stretchers (see drawing below). After completing the half laps, youcan assemble the workbench.

Add the Cross Rails – The nextstep is to add the cross rails that sup-port the top. How many you need toadd depends on the overall length ofthe workbench. But it’s best to addenough cross rails between the endand center assemblies so the rails

are spaced evenly and they’re nomore than 22" apart.

Cleats and Slats – All that’s leftto do is add the cleats and slats. Aftersizing the cleats to fit between theend and center assemblies, you canadd the slats. For the even numberof slats shown between the end andcenter assemblies, it’s best to workout from the center of the openingand cut the end slats to fit.
