Mic#e$"The Holidays are a time for family and friends, for martinis and Turtles

chocolates, for giving (and yes, getting). We hope this guide filled with

Canadian designs inspires you and makes your shopping experience fun

but more importantly stress-free.

We’ve done our best to present to you some great holiday fashion

options for your specific body shape, pieces that will take you from the

office to evening events effortlessly. We’ve sprinkled this guide with gift

ideas for your sister-in-law, your child’s teacher and your best friend.

Gifts under $50, gifts for that person who has everything, and, heck,

gifts for yourself. Take advantage of our wishlist service on-line or in

store and take the guess work out of holiday shopping.

Your jewellery pieces are often described as wearable art. Where do you draw your inspiration from to come up with these unique ideas?

I love using unconventional items to create wearable jewellery and often

the materials themselves will inspire the outcome of the piece. Having

studied at Nscad, a conceptual art school, the idea of wearable art has

always stayed at the forefront of my mind. The training I later gained from

LCF solidified my desire to create pieces that can become part of people’s

everyday lives while adding a twist to something ordinary. I like things

that aren’t quite perfect, and my attraction to art and design that is

somewhat askew and asymmetrical really inspires each collection.

Your first solo collection involved both clothing and jewellery. What made you decide to only focus now on the jewellery?

After designing my first solo collection in women’s wear, I made the

decision to return to Canada to focus on jewellery as I had already started

to build a following in that industry. Although I love the idea of designing

a total look using both clothing and jewellery, I find people will take more

risks with their accessory choices, using them as a form of self expres-

sion which I find exciting. However, my love of designing clothing and the

precision that accompanies tailoring has never diminished and I do hope

to expand my label in the future.

What materials do you enjoy working with most?

Vintage or reclaimed materials are what I enjoy working with most. They’re

already infused with character and history by the time I get my hands on

them, and their properties often dictate what they will become. Further,

the whole process of sourcing them is just as thrilling for me as creating

the actual piece.

Where are your favourite places to hang out in Toronto?

I’m always discovering new favourites, but staples have to include Trinity

Bellwoods (in the summer), 416 Snack Bar (all year round) and I recently

moved into the south Annex and am developing a slight obsession with

Sam James coffee. I hope to become a neighbourhood regular!

What advice would you give to young creatives wanting to start their own collections?

Experiment and don’t stop...you’ll never know what’s hiding in your

imagination until you let it out in ways that may seem unconventional.

Always carry a notebook - it’s like having a studio in your pocket. To

remember that is okay to start small and build slowly - don’t rush it.

And don’t forget - it’s a business...take business courses!

You’ve been known to create clothing items that fit women of all shapes. Is this something that is important to you?

Absolutely! Each woman is beautiful and everyone should be able to look

and feel pretty through the clothes they wear.

How do you decide which fabrics to use in a collection?

The philosophy of the MN line is to feel comfortable and sophisticated.

To achieve this we look for soft materials that are fluid or supple with a

certain amount of depth or texture.

Congratulations on your adorable new little one! How has being a mother affected running a successful company?

Now I have three babies (I include my husband) and time is a precious

commodity. Having a child has allowed me delegate and view our production

and creative process from an external view as a client. I believe the

collection has never been stronger.

You were cast in La Collection, Québec’s version of Project Runway a few years back. How has that experience helped get to where you are today?

It allowed me to leave my job and give me the confidence to start my own

company. It also gave me the motivation to succeed and bring something

new to the Canadian fashion industry.

What does your typical day look like?

The morning is baby time with Olivia and then it’s non stop meetings,

meetings, and more meetings.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

In Montreal with my babies! I am happy where we are with the life

we are building.
