Buying locally carries benefi tsCollectively, we all have a lot to gain by
supporting our local shops and producers. Indeed, every time we encourage the mer-chants in our neighbourhood we are making a gesture that is profitable for ourselves and our community. We are contributing directly to the economic development of our region as well as strengthening its social fabric.
The people who offer products and servi-ces in our immediate surroundings are often our family members, friends or neighbours. By supporting them we are, in a way, supporting ourselves. When we show solidarity with local enterprises, we are contributing, in concrete terms, to job creation and, consequently, to an increase in purchasing power and local employee revenues.
Moreover, we should remember that a
region with a strong economy brings many dividends to the community that allows it to prosper. This generally translates into the creation and maintenance of infrastructure and quality services for citizens. Building parks, playgrounds for children, libraries, sporting complexes or landscaping communal areas are just some examples of the improvements that are directly tied to the local economy’s health. Collectively, this contributes directly to the improvement in the quality of life within the region and, to a certain extent, can even help in slowing down the exodus of young people and qualified manpower to large urban centres.
We are all links in the long chain of a regional economy which we strengthen each time we buy locally. En courage your local merchants, it’s profitable for everyone.

Shop LocalBuying local stimulates the economy
I n j e c t i n g new money into local businesses by buying their products helps to stimulate the economy right across the country. And a healthy e c o n o m y means great-er purchas-ing power for all consumers. It also means low, competi-tive prices and quality jobs for the Canadian workforce.
FAIR AND EQUITABLE TRADE — The direct purchase of products which are manufactured or cultivated here ensures that the manufacturer, the farmer or the craftsman receives a fair and equitable price for their mer-chandise. Inversely, the manufacturer of an imported product often sees his profits gradually melt away due to the fact that his product must pass through many different hands before arriving on our store shelves.
LONG-TERM INVESTMENT — Several studies also prove that businesses cre-ated here have a greater tendency to keep their factories and other instal-lations in the community where they were first established. Large foreign
enterprises on the other hand move regularly depending on what area can offer them the most inexpensive oper-ating costs at that particular moment in time. By encouraging local busi-nesses, consumers support those com-panies whose lasting presence in the community is virtually guaranteed.
And don’t forget that investing in local business is to invest in the local population, maintaining levels of employment and creating new jobs. Finally, it is also interesting to note that local companies, supported and encouraged by local consumers, are more likely to offer financial support to community organizations and, in this way, give people in need a help-ing hand.
BUYING LOCAL products means stimulating the local economy, creat-ing jobs and injecting new money into local businesses.

Shop Local
Details make all the differenceLocal store owners have an innate
sense of customer service. Naturally and spontaneously, they never miss an oppor-tunity to demonstrate the advantages and benefits of shopping close to home. More often than not, they know our names by heart as well as those of our parents or our children, bringing a warm and friendly dimension to our daily shop-ping.
Better still, they remember our tastes and our expectations in detail. The butch-er, for example, knows exactly which cut of meat to serve to one customer and which to serve to another without for-getting their favourite type of ham and how thick it should be sliced. It’s true, of course, that these little details are not
essential to our survival, but they do con-tribute toward improving our quality of life and making our shopping experience that much more pleasant.
Moreover, the proximity of goods and services not only makes our daily lives easier but also allow us to save consider-able amounts of time and money.
Even though the ticket price may sometimes be a little higher at a specia-lized neighbourhood store, reducing the num ber of trips we make to large urban centres weighs the scales considerably. Indeed, once the cost of gas is added to the bill, some price reductions do not justify the trip. At the end of the day, buying local is often our best option, in economic as well as in human terms.

Shop LocalBuying local is healthy
The Canada Food Guide recommends the consumption of eight to 10 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. The more these foods are bursting with vitamins and nutrients, the health-ier you’ll be. But which fruits and vegetables on the shelves of your local grocery store or fruit and vegetable shop are the most nutritious? The answer to that is obvious: those which are produced locally.
FRESH = NUTRITIOUS — The fresher fruits and vegetables are the more vitamins and other nutri-tious elements they will contain; and the longer the time lapse between harvesting and consump-tion, the fewer nutrients there will be.
Local produce, hav-ing been transported over shorter distances before arriving at the store, will be much fresher than imported produce which has spent days or perhaps weeks in transit between the point of production and their point of sale. Packaging techniques and
use of preserving agents to keep food fresh will alter the nutritional qualities of imported fruits and vege-tables even more.
Moreover, in order to try and offer import-ed products which look as fresh as local prod-ucts, foreign distributors will often harvest fruits and vegetables before they reach full maturity. This early harvest alters the nutritional qualities
of these foods by not allowing them to fully develop.
MORE NATURAL PROD-UCTS — It should never be forgotten that the use of pesticides is strictly con-trolled in the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in this country. However, imported products run the risk of containing traces of chemical products which are harmful to our health.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES cultivated by your local farmer are fresh and bursting with vitamins.
Nature’s Fare Markets is locally owned and operated, and believes in supporting the communities we live in by building long-term relationships with our customers and suppliers. Our mission is to ethically assist you and your family on your journey to better to health. Our goal is to build a community of healthy, aware customers, working towards a common goal of sustainable real food, quality vitamins and supplements, and honest educa-tion from our staff and industry leaders. As a full service health and wellness store, we search out food that offers the freshest, purest and healthiest options available in today’s marketplace. We support fair trade prod-ucts, ethically grown and manufactured foods, and local organic producers. Throughout the years we have established unique and positive bonds with many local organic BC farmers, ranchers, and food artisans.

Shop LocalReduce your ecological footprint
Global warm-ing, glaciers melting, reducing the levels of greenhouse gas... These days, we’re all talking about the environment, its health, the dangers which menace it, our impact on the planet. While all around the world people search for ways to reduce their ecological footprint, one idea is gaining in popularity: buy-ing local.
FEWER KILO-METRES — Buying local has numerous advantages for our environ-ment.
First of all, items produced here help to reduce our production of green-house gases. It’s evident that local products are transported over much shorter distances than products coming from other countries. Thus, with the reduction in transportation, whether by truck, ship, train or plane, products from here will do a lot less damage to the environment than items originating elsewhere.
FEWER PESTICIDES — The consump-tion of local products also has certain
other advantages for the environment. As well as travelling shorter distances, food items from here need fewer pesti-cides and preservation agents to keep them fresh before they appear on our kitchen tables.
Mass production or stock breeding facilities in other parts of the world often use this type of product, many of which are now banned in this country. These substances can alter the nature and the health of animal populations. Our local farmers have a greater ten-dency to favour natural and healthier methods of raising stock and cultivat-ing crops.
BUYING LOCAL can help to reduce our impact on the envi-ronment.

Moving can be a huge upheaval, for adults as well as children: new sur-roundings, new routines, new friends. According to several studies, moving is the third most stressful event after mourning and job loss. If you have moved recently, here are a few tips to help you adapt to your new surround-ings.
Municipal websites and local news-papers can’t be beaten as ways of find-ing out all you need to know about all the services and activities on offer, such as swimming pool and library opening hours, summer festival programs, and sports and cultural facilities.
Next, visit the downtown area on foot. Even in suburbs, there is like-ly a commercial core somewhere. Frequented by residents and visitors alike, town centres are the place to find shops, cafés, and restaurants. Chatting with people at these places can open up many possibilities. Another good idea is to spend some time discovering the broader area on a bicycle or on a public bus.
Get to know your neighbours by inviting them for a housewarming party. This kind of get-together, big or small, will give your children the opportunity to feel more at ease in their new sur-roundings, and your new neighbours will certainly appreciate this type of thoughtfulness.
Finally, before school starts, look for clubs that your children may be interested in joining. This will allow them to make friends and to fit in more
quickly. Another way to help your kids is to show them, well in advance, the route they will take between home and school. See if neighbours can put your children in touch with others in the area, with whom they can walk to school.
NEW TO THE AREA? Spend some time dis-covering your new town, on foot, on a bike, or riding on the bus system.

Shop LocalTen reasons to support local business
1. LOCAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS.When you purchase at locally owned businesses, more
money is kept in the community because locally owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base.
2. NON PROFITS RECEIVE GREATER SUPPORT.Local business owners donate more to local charities
than non-local owners.3. UNIQUE BUSINESSES CREATE CHARACTER &
PROSPERITYThe unique character of your local community is
defined in large part by the business that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of you home and property.
4. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IS REDUCED.Small local business usually set up shop in the town/
village centre, providing a centralized variety that is
much friendlier to a community’s walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
5. MOST NEW JOBS ARE PROVIDED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES.
Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus the more jobs you have in your local community the less people are going to have to com-mute, which means more time and less traffic and pol-lution.
6. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS BETTER.Local businesses often hire people with more specific
product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to blow you off or be rude because they have to face you day after day.
7. LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS INVEST IN COMMUNITY.Local businesses are owned by people who live in
this community, are less likely to leave and are more invested in the community’s welfare and future.
8. PUBLIC BENEFITS FAR OUTWEIGH PUBLIC COSTS.Local businesses require comparatively little infra-
structure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores.
9. COMPETITION AND DIVERSITY LEADS TO MORE CONSUMER CHOICES.
A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long term.
10. YOU MATTER MOREWe talk a lot about exerting influence with your pur-
chasing choices, or “voting with your wallet.” It’s a fact that business respond to their customers but your values and desires are much more influential to you local com-munity business than out-of-town stores.
Courtesy of Local First.
Shop local for your summer pleasuresWith the arrival of the warmer weath-
er, you might find you’re still missing a few summer comforts.
You may be used to shopping in big-ger city centres, but much of what you need can be purchased locally. Shopping close to home is a great way to support the businesses owned by your townsfolk and to keep money circulating in your home town.
For most of us, what would sum-mer be without barbecuing? Fortunately, most hardware and department stores stock barbecues that are designed and manufactured here. Before making your
final choice among the many models on offer, decide what your budget is, how much room you have to store it, and the size of the cooking surface you want.
Next, decide on the type of fuel that will be best for you: natural gas, propane, or charcoal. The higher the BTUs available (British Thermal Units, a unit measuring the heat produced by a burner), the more your barbecue can handle.
If you’re thinking about investing in a swimming pool, talk to the consultants at your local pool store. You will have to decide if you want an above-ground pool
or an in-ground one, and if you want a chlorine-treated pool or a saltwater one. All have their advantages and varying prices. For an above-ground pool, good quality components — the wall, the out-side posts, the edge, the cover and the filtration system — will ensure that you receive the best value for money.
Choices are even more plentiful for in-ground pools; the shape, dimensions, and depth of the pool can all be adapt-ed to your requirements. Three basic materials can be used to construct your pool: concrete, concrete covered with a vinyl liner, or fibreglass.
BARBECUES, SWIMMING POOLS, spas, swing sets, picnic tables: local stores can help you stock up on essential summer equipment.

Shop LocalA successful renovationproject begins locally
Many people mis-takenly believe that they won’t be able to find what they’re looking for if they live in a small town. Therefore, they resort to going to huge shopping malls in large urban cen-tres only to return home discouraged. If you want to renovate this year, before spending a lot of money on gas, why not stop first at some of your local stores. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Even though your local merchants sometimes only have a small area to work with, they are often very well organized and may have the product you’re looking for even if you don’t see it on display. A store owner often con-centrates on the relevance and the diversity of items rather than on quantity. For example, they prob-ably won’t have 350 iden-tical handles for kitchen cabinets, but rather several dozen examples of various models. Who needs 350 handles anyway.
For very specific requirements, your local store will know how to best satisfy your needs. For example, if the majority of houses in your area have been built with stone or a specific type of wood, only businesses in your region will have what’s necessary to repair, replace or main-tain your home. What’s more, because they are generally very attentive
to the needs of their cus-tomers, if they don’t have what you are looking for it would be a pleasure for them to order it for you.
Finally, be sure to make use of your local experts’ know-how. They know their products and they’ll be able to give you lots of good advice. You’ll soon understand exactly what good customer ser-vice really means.
RATHER THAN SPENDING your money on gas, shop at local stores — you’ll be sure to fi nd what you need.
Supporting your community a logical choiceDuring the present economic slowdown,
buying local is becoming more and more the norm when it comes time to purchase all the necessities of day-to-day living. As well as encouraging the local economy, purchasing items which are locally produced brings num-erous advantages, making them the logical choice and, at the same time, lending support to our communities.
It goes without saying that buying local, first and foremost injects money directly into the local economy. This money helps to maintain or expand local companies, allowing them to keep their employees and even create new jobs. In return, this will increase the buy-ing potential of the local population and, just as a wheel turns, the money spent comes back
to us or to our neighbour. But buying local doesn’t just bring eco-
nomic advantages. It also has a positive impact on the quality of the environment, on the ties which bind people together and on their feeling of belonging in the community where they live.
Where fresh food products are concerned, living in the same area as the farms which produce them guarantees the availability of fresh, high-quality items. As for other con-sumer products, these will be better adapted to the people in the area if they are designed and manufactured locally by local people. Before purchasing anything, consider its impact and think about the importance of supporting our communities.
EVERY TIME we support the businesses in our community we are making a gesture that is profi table for our town and ourselves.
