The!most!important!mitzvah!in!Judaism!is!pekuach!nefesh!–!the!saving!of!a!life.!!We!are!taught!that!we!shall!not!stand!by!idly!while!a!neighbor’s!blood!is!shed.!!(Leviticus!19:16)!!According!to!the!Talmud,!this!means!that!if!one!sees!someone!drowning,!mauled!by!beasts,!or!attacked!by!robbers,!one!is!obligated!to!save!him.!

Nowadays,!we!don’t!usually!see!people!drowning,!being!mauled!or!being!robbed.!!But!we!do!see!people!suffering!and!dying!from!leukemia,!lymphoma!and!other!blood!diseases.!!Thanks!to!modern!medicine,!we!have!the!ability!to!save!some!of!these!people.!!We!can!see!leukemia,!lymphoma!and!blood!diseases!as!the!beasts!and!robbers!most!prevalent!in!our!day,!for!they!maul,!attack!and!take!away!life.!!We!cannot!stand!idly!by!and!allow!this!to!happen!without!a!fight.!

This!Yom!Kippur,!Temple!Beth!David!will!join!with!the!Religious!Action!Center,!and!over!sixty!of!our!sister!congregations!in!adding!as!many!people!as!we!can!to!the!Gift!of!Life’s!bone!marrow!and!blood!platelet!registry.!!The!initial!process!is!simple:!fill!out!a!form!and!swab!the!inside!of!your!cheek.!!It!will!take!less!than!ten!minutes,!and!has!the!potential!to!save!someone’s!life.!(cont.!page!5)!

Kehilla קהילה [Hebrew] n. (pl. kehilot קהילות):

Jewish+Community.++Used+to+refer+to+a+Jewish+community,+anywhere+in+the+world.+

In+my+letter+of+late+June+

(http://tinyurl.com/DMWletter2014)+I+spoke+about+the+Kehilla+or+the+community+that+unites+us.+I+was+obviously+focusing+on+Temple+Beth+David+and+this+is+

a+theme+I+hope+to+continue+throughout+my+Presidency.+However,+there+are+other+communities+to+which+we+all+belong.+As+we+pray+on+Shabbat+

morning:+For+human+community,+our+common+past+and+future+hope,+Our+oneness+transcending+all+separation,+our+capacity+to+work+for+peace+and+

justice+in+the+midst+of+hostility+and+oppression,+Modim+anachnu+lach.+

Whether+we+were+born+into+the+Jewish+faith,+chose+to+enter+the+faith+through+conversion+or+are+married+

to+someone+of+the+Jewish+faith,+we+are+all+part+of+the+Kehilla+or+the+Jewish+Community.+"Their"+successes+are+"our"+successes+(as+Adam+Sandler+characterized+

in+not+one+but+two+Channukah+songs).+Unfortunately,+in+particular+in+Israel+this+summer,+

"their"+struggles+are+"our"+struggles.+Whether+or+not+we+have+had+the+blessing+of+actually+visiting+Eretz+Yisrael,+it+is+our+spiritual+home.++

This+summer,+as+we+sat+in+relative+safety+in+

Massachusetts+our+"homeland"+was+under+attack+by+both+missiles+and+the+media.+As+I+write+this,+a+cease9fire+is+temporarily+in+effect.+As+you+read+this,+I+only+

hope+it+still+remains+so.+

+I+was+proud+to+join+the+Greater+Boston+Kehilla+at+a+

Rally+in+Support+of+Israel+at+City+Hall+Plaza+in+August.+Members+of+area+congregations,+including+our+own,+

joined+with+thousands+to+stand+up+in+support+of+Israel.++

At+our+Shabbat+morning+Torah+Study+and+service+this+summer+(another+Kehilla+to+which+all+are+welcome),+

we+have+been+reading+the+names+and+saying+Kaddish+for+the+I.D.F.+Soldiers+who+recently+died.+For+me,+it+is+a+very+moving+experience+and+a+reminder+that+we+all+

share+a+powerful+connection+with+Israel.+We+must+continue+to+pray+for+peace+in+Jerusalem+and+beyond.++

A+larger+community+to+which+we+belong+as+members+of+Temple+Beth+David+is+the+URJ+or+Union+of+Reform+

Judaism.+A+portion+of+the+dues+you+pay+to+TBD+goes+to+sustaining+our+membership+in+the+URJ.++We+may+all+have+our+opinions+on+the+relevance+of+some+

unions+in+today's+society+but+the+URJ+isn't+a+labor+union+and+it+is+still+very+much+relevant.+In+short,+the+URJ+is+OUR+union.+++

It+was+only+after+attending+the+Biennial+in+San+Diego+

and+the+Scheidt+Institute+in+Atlanta+that+I+understood+the+breadth+and+depth+of+resources+the+URJ+provides+to+member+synagogues+and+the+importance+of+the+

message+they+(we)+spread+to+the+entire+world.+Please+check+out+the+URJ+website+URJ.org+and+the+companion+website+reformjudaism.org+There+you+

This&Year&in&Jerusalem!&

Greetings!from!the!Galilee!!I!am!writing!this!Rosh!Hashanah!message!to!you!from!Tiberias!and!Safed,!where!my!Cantorial!colleagues!and!I!are!enjoying!a!restful!Shabbat!by!the!Sea!of!Galilee.!We!were!desperately!in!need!of!a!break!and!a!change!of!scenery,!having!been!confined!to!a!very!small!radius!inside!of!our!neighborhood!in!Jerusalem!for!the!last!3!weeks.!We’d!been!advised!to!stay!out!of!the!Old!City;!our!field!trip!to!the!City!of!David!was!cancelled!this!week,!as!was!our!trip!to!the!Tel!Aviv!museum!last!week.!The!concern!in!Jerusalem!had!to!do!with!rioting!and!“days!of!rage”!whereas!the!issue!in!Tel!Aviv!had!been!rocket!fire!from!Gaza.!Needless!to!say,!we’ve!been!equal!parts!stressed!and!stir!crazy!and!the!North!seemed!like!the!safest!place!to!be!at!the!moment.!Of!course,!getting!caught!driving!on!the!highway!with!the!potential!for!a!rocket!siren!to!go!off!had!its!own!risks.!However,!I!recited!the!traveler’s!prayer!in!Hebrew!and!English!as!we!ventured!out!of!Jerusalem!and!three!Cantorial!soloists!singing!some!beautiful!prayers!for!peace!in!improvised!3!part!harmony!in!the!car!kept!us!calm.!

Last!night,!we!enjoyed!a!lovely!Shabbat!dinner!at!a!neighboring!hotel!in!Tiberias,!surrounded!by!a!majority!of!Sephardi!and!Masorti!families!also!enjoying!Shabbat!together.!Each!one!of!us!began!our!dinner!singing!“Shalom!Aleichem.”!It!was!a!non`stop!chorus!of!“Shalom!Aleichem,”!as!each!family!arrived!at!their!table.!There!was!such!ruach,!I!could!feel!the!presence!of!Shechinah!(the!female!embodiment!of!God.)!I!felt!such!a!sense!of!belonging!and!peace,!despite!the!horror!going!on!not!far!away.!!!!!!!!!

After!dinner,!we!were!heading!back!to!our!hotel,!when!we!met!a!family!sitting!outside.!My!friends!and!I!struck!up!a!conversation!with!them.!The!father!told!us!they!were!taking!a!much!needed!vacation!as!they!are!residents!of!Sderot.!Sderot!is!a!city!in!the!Negev!and!it!is!located!only!a!mile!away!from!Gaza.!They!have!been!under!constant!

attack!from!Gaza!since!2001.!In!2007`2008,!the!residents!of!Sderot!experienced!3`4!rocket!attacks!daily!and!many!of!them!now!suffer!from!post!traumatic!stress!disorder.!Despite!all!of!the!daily!trauma,!this!family!has!no!intention!of!leaving!their!home!and!relocating.!The!father!explained!that!his!family!came!from!Sderot.!He!was!born!there!and!he!plans!to!die!there,!as!it!is!his!home.!In!typical!“Rachel!fashion”,!the!minute!I!heard!he!was!from!Sderot,!the!Mama!Bear!in!me!kicked!in!and!I!told!him!“you!need!a!hug”!and!threw!my!arms!around!him.!I!wanted!so!badly!for!God!to!watch!over!our!new!friends,!that!in!the!middle!of!the!sidewalk!I!proceeded!to!put!my!hand!on!his!head!and!recite!the!priestly!benediction.!!

“Y’varechecha!Adonai!v’Yishmerecha…May!God!bless!you!and!keep!you…”!

He!interrupted!me!and!said…”please,!my!son….”!!

I!took!my!hand!off!his!head!and!turned!to!his!son.!I!put!my!hand!on!the!young!boy’s!head!and!continued:!

“Ya’eir!Adonai!panav!eilecha!vichunekah…May!God!cause!the!divine!light!to!shine!upon!you!and!be!gracious!unto!you.”!

“Yisa!Adonai!panav!eilecha!v’yaseim!lecha!shalom…May!God!turn!toward!you!and!grant!you!peace.”!!

I!then!tousled!the!boy’s!hair!and!patted!his!cheek.!His!parents!thanked!me!and!I!told!them!I!would!keep!them!in!my!prayers.!We!wished!each!other!a!Shabbat!Shalom!and!parted!ways.!But,!I!will!never!forget!them!and!I!will!continue!to!pray!for!their!safety!and!for!God!to!bring!peace!to!the!nation!of!Israel.!(cont.!page!5)!

Director+of+Temple+Beth+David.+I+am+excited+for+the+opportunity+to+continue+the+excellent+programs+already+established+at+the+synagogue+and+to+continue+

to+develop+our+school+in+new+and+exciting+ways.++

My+commitment+to+Jewish+education+is+rooted+in+the+belief+that+each+of+us+is+created+b’tzelem+elohim+(in+the+image+of+G9d).+I+believe+that+education+involves+(to+

paraphrase+the+Piasczner+Rebbe)+unlocking+the+potential+in+every+person,+to+actualize+the+hidden+sparks+within+her.+My+goal+is+to+ignite+the+souls+of+

students+and+to+provide+them+with+a+carefully+crafted+education9+one+that+empowers+them+to+learn+about+

and+embrace+our+traditions,+strengthen+their+Jewish+identities,+grapple+with+religious+questions,+and+to+embrace+the+interests+of+the+community9+of+our+

Temple,+of+the+Jewish+people,+of+Israel,+and+of+the+world.+I+hope+to+engender+a+culture+of+engagement+and+joy,+in+which+students+are+growing+ethically,+

spiritually,+academically,+and+creatively.++

I+believe+that+each+of+us+has+the+deep+desire+and+capacity+to+learn.+Each+child+must+be+supported+and+valued+for+who+they+are+as+human+beings,+and+in+their+

different+learning+styles.+Our+school+needs+to+help+students+learn+to+value+and+learn+from+each+other.+The+ways+we+live,+learn+and+interact,+both+individually+and+

as+a+community,+must+be+infused+with+clear+Jewish+values.+How+one+acts+and+treats+others+is+of+utmost+importance.+Respect+(kavod)+and+care+for+each+other,+

kindness+(g’milut+hasadim),+individual+and+collective+responsibility+(achrayut),+tzedek+(righteousness)+and+tikkun+olam+(world+repair)+should+be+taught,+modeled+

and+lived+within+the+culture+of+our+school.++

I+feel+honored+to+join+the+Temple+Beth+David+family.+

I'm+passionate+about+inspiring+our+next+generation+to+embrace+Judaism,+and+working+

with+the+wonderful+teachers,+parents+and+temple+community+to+make+that+possible.+++

social+media,+both+pro+and+con,+in+a+way+never+before+seen.+I+urge+you+to+join+our+Temple+Facebook+Group+to+keep+informed+of+events+going+on+both+within+our+"four+walls"+and+without.+If+I+see+something+I+feel+is+relevant+to+the+congregation,+I+post+it+to+our+Facebook+group.+Some+is+serious,+some+not+so,+but+I+

hope+it+helps+us+to+feel+connected.+The+Rabbi,+Rachel+and+others+also+use+the+group+as+a+way+to+keep+the+congregation+informed.+I+know+there+are+those+of+you+who+"don't+do+Facebook."+However,+if+you+"do'"+please+consider+joining+the+group.+It+is+

one+more+way+to+feel+connected+to+the+Kehilla.+

Ze'ev+(+Vladimir)+Jabotinsky+is+the+most+important+Zionist+leader+that+people+don't+know.++Halkin+masterfully+introduces+this+complex+character;+informative+yet+easy+reading.+

Jabotinsky+was+the+founder+of+Revisionist+Zionism,+the+forerunner+of+the+Likud+party.+His+disagreements+with+Ben+Gurion+are+fascinating.+Jabotinsky+correctly+understood+the+nature+of+the+Arab/+Israeli+conflict.++

His+dogged+efforts+led+to+the+formation+of+Jewish+units+within+the+British+army+during+WW1.+The+Haganah+

emerged+from+this.+Jabotinsky+was+its+first+commander.++

He+was+a+territorial+maximalist,+yet+a+strong+supporter+of+full+and+equal+rights+for+Arabs+in+the+new+Jewish+state.+He+was+a+vigorous+supporter+of+democracy,+a+staunch+opponent+of+totalitarianism+yet+often+accused+by+his+enemies+of+fascism.+

He+was+a+fascinating+polymath;+a+journalist+and+fluent+in+seven+languages.+A+brilliant+writer,+he+authored+one+

of+the+great+Russian+novels+of+the+twentieth+century,+"+The+Five".++

Shmita!and!Climate!Change:!a!Theme!for!5775!

Throughout+this+year,+we+have+a+number+of+educational+and+social+action+programs+relating+to+ideas+about+Judaism+and+environmentalism.+This+year,+5775,+is+a+Shmita+year,+the+every9seven9year+Year+of+Release+commanded+in+Exodus+and+Leviticus:+as+Shabbat+is+the+day+when+people+are+to+rest,+Shmita+is+the+year+when+

the+land+is+to+rest.+The+Talmud+cites+failure+to+observe+Shmita+as+a+cause+for+exile,+and+indeed,+Shmita+has+been+obscure+for+many+centuries.+But+recently,+there+has+been+interest+among+Jews+worldwide+to+think+anew+about+how+Shmita+might+guide+us+in+stewardship+of+the+earth.+This+comes+at+the+same+time+that+dire+

assessments+of+global+climate9change+are+making+harsh+demands+on+any+sense+of+environmental+awareness.+How+do+we+cope,+how+do+we+respond,+how+can+we+care+for+creation?+Acceptance?+Protest?+Grief?+What+is+
