TRANSNET / ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY SHARED VISION
Two thirds of South Africa’s containers move through Durban, as well as a majorityof liquid fuel and automotive cargoes. In addition, Durban handles significant breakbulk, dry bulk and chemical cargoes, and provides facilities for cruise liners, theSA Navy, and for fishing, service and recreational craft.
The Shared Vision is a framework for the long term development of Durban asSouth Africa’s premier port city, providing for the maritime transportation needs ofthe greater Southern African economy; and describes a program of infrastructuralexpansions, land use plans and inland transport connections.

ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE OF THE DURBAN PORT EXPANSION
Shipbuilding activities provide a potentially rich source of employment andexpenditure, but the industry is a cyclically unstable one, and spendingbenefits are far outweighed by those associated with cargo handling
Ship repair activities also provide a potentially rich source of employment andexpenditure, and the industry is a more stable one in the long term. Ship repairactivities should be retained as an integral part of a diversified terminal port
“Engagements with the ship repair industry are proceeding with a view todetermining their long term plans, and to ensure that provision is made foraccommodating the needs of this vital maritime service industry” – 2050 Vision
