SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS
17th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST | September 19, 2021 | 10:00 am Parking Lot Worship
“ . . . to Reach, Ign i te , & Empower people fo r Jes us .”
James 3 :13 - -4 :3 ,7 -8a & Mark 9 :30 -37
Today we hear James warn against selfish ambition, while the disciples quarrel over
which one of them is the greatest. Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve.
Then, to make it concrete, he puts in front of them a flesh-and-blood child. We are
called to welcome the children God puts in front of us, to make room for them in
daily interaction, and to give them a place of honor in the assembly.

Passing of the Peace
Opening Prayer
Gathering Song Holy Spirit, Rain Down
Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down.
Oh, Comforter and Friend, how we need Your touch again.
Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down.
Let Your power fall, let Your voice be heard.
Come and change our hearts as we stand in Your Word.
Holy Spirit, rain down.
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind can know what God has in store.
So open up heaven, open it wide, over our church and over our lives.

Children’s Message Jilene Ylonen
Gospel Reading Mark 9:30-37
30They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know
it; 31for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed
into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise
again.” 32But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. 33Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What
were you arguing about on the way?” 34But they were silent, for on the way they had
argued with one another who was the greatest. 35He sat down, called the twelve, and
said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” 36Then he
took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to
them, 37“Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever
welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”
Word of God, word of Life. Thanks be to God.
Message Pastor Brice Bloxham
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Gathering of Tithes and Offerings
Offering Prayer
Words of Welcome to the Table
The Lord’s Prayer ELWs145
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and
ever. Amen
Communion Blessing
Communion Prayer Gracious God, we have received the elements of bread and wine. We have come to the table, and because we are loved, You in Christ Jesus receive us and offer to us healing
and hope. Forgive our stubbornness. Heal our brokenness. Challenge us to truly live lives
of faithfulness and discipleship. Amen.
Benediction
Sending Song How Can I Keep From Singing?
There is an endless song
Echoes in my soul
I hear the music ring
And though the storms may come
I am holding on
To the rock I cling
How can I keep from singing Your praise
How can I ever say enough
How amazing is Your love
How can I keep from shouting Your name
I know I am loved by the King
And it makes my heart want to sing
I will lift my eyes
In the darkest night
For I know my Savior lives
And I will walk with You
Knowing You'll see me through
And sing the songs You give
How can I keep from singing Your praise
How can I ever say enough
How amazing is Your love
How can I keep from shouting Your name
I know I am loved by the King
And it makes my heart want to sing
Dismissal Go in Peace, Serve the Lord! Thanks be to God!
I can sing in the troubled times
Sing when I win
I can sing when I lose my step
And fall down again
I can sing 'cause You pick me up
Sing 'cause You're there
I can sing 'cause You hear me, Lord
When I call to You in prayer
I can sing with my last breath
Sing for I know
That I'll sing with the angels
And the saints around the throne
How can I keep from singing Your praise
How can I ever say enough
How amazing is Your love
How can I keep from shouting Your name
I know I am loved by the King
and it makes my heart…
I am loved by the King, and it makes my heart…
I am loved by the King and it makes my heart
want to sing
