YES, YOU CAN WORK FROM HOME! Searching for jobs that you could do from home used to be akin to
scanning the Sunday classifieds for offers to get rich quickly by stuffing envelopes or flipping houses.
But now there are numerous legitimate opportunities for at-home
employment, both full and part-time. However, there are also plenty of scams and I want you to be very
aware of that. The website, Rat Race Rebellion, states that for every legitimate opportunity, there are 57 phonies and it actually has a
“Scam-O-Meter” that is updated daily. If you plan to apply to a particular company, please do your research.
When considering applying to a certain company for any at-home job, watch for the following positive signs:
• The company is well-established
• There is no fee to apply
• The ad includes the company name, not just an e-mail address • Human resources personnel are available for questions
• Benefits, pay rates, policies and procedures are listed
• There is an application and interview or testing process • Job functions and expectations are listed

A Note from Shelley:
When my father first came to live with me, I was a Registered Nurse, working 12-hour
shifts with the babies at the hospital. In just a few months, it became apparent to me that
I wasn’t going to be able to leave him at home alone. Several times during my shift,
my father was admitted to the same hospital by ambulance and I
was pulled away from my duties (much to the annoyance of my supervisor and colleagues who would now have to double their
workload) and then there came a time when my father called and yelled at the hospital operator “God Dammit, I know she’s there somewhere! Find her!”
Thus began my life as a full-time caregiver. I was fortunate that my
father was financially stable enough that he could contribute to his care but it was not comparable to my previous salary. That’s when I began searching for ways to earn money while working at home.
There are now legitimate ways to earn an income from home and the
opportunities encompass all sorts of skill sets. From administrative assistant skills, to education, to craft sales, to technology, to blogging, opportunities are available for you to earn money from
home while caring for your aging parent or loved one. There are many levels of care giving and they change over time so
not all of these suggestions will fit your needs. It’s my hope that you
can find at least one work-at-home opportunity that will enable you
to earn some pocket change (or even enough to make a living). You
may also be able to take one of these suggestions and expand on it
according to your expertise. As you explore these ideas, keep an
open mind and an open heart. I NEVER expected to be where I am
today. I was a BABY nurse.

Education-Based Options Many of us who are now care-giving have been
educated and/or worked in a certain field for an extended period of time. We can utilize this
expertise to provide an additional source of income while working at home.
Teaching On-line Courses for High Schools or Colleges Many colleges and even high schools are now offering courses on the
Internet. If you are good at developing a subject into a series of lesson plans and moderating forums in which students will participate, this could be a very good option for you. Check with your
local colleges and high schools. You might also try GetEducated and Elance.com which lists opportunities for those doing academic
writing, web research, translation and other work. Creating Materials for Educators TeachersPayTeachers is a website offering lesson plans, worksheets,
templates, activity ideas, and MORE for sale to all sorts of educators from preschool to adult education and even has a section called Lesson Plans on Demand where teachers can type in the content
they need and an author can respond. Costs for these materials are inexpensive but if a multitude of educators purchase your product(s),
it could add up to some significant income.
Translation Translation services are always in demand. With the world becoming
a smaller place and increasingly multi-cultural, businesses, schools, hospitals, churches, government agencies all need brochures, forms
Education-Based Options

and audio files translated from one language into another keeping cultural differences in mind. Again, try Elance.com or your local hospital, schools or place of worship.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Occupational Outlook Handbook of 2008-09 projects an employment increase of 24% over the 2006-
2016 decade. Private Instruction There are many types of subjects that could be taught in your home,
depending upon your previous experience. You could offer educational tutoring, instruction
in piano or another musical instrument. Hand-made talents
such as sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting are
making a come-back as evidenced by the popularity of the book “The Friday Night
Knitting Club” and many people are looking for instruction in these categories. Sign language is
another type of instruction that could be taught from home and since it is now recognized as an acceptable language course for high school graduation requirements, there are more students taking advantage
of learning it.
Class Instruction Many of the subjects mentioned under the Private Instruction section
could also be taught to a small group of people. I know of ladies in my area who teach gourmet cooking, bread baking, tai chi, yoga, arts
and crafts, scrapbooking, and “How to Use eBay” classes in their homes.
Education-Based Options

Home School Helper There are also opportunities to help out home-schooling moms by
teaching their children certain subjects that they would rather outsource. Again, there are also on-line agencies that need
instructors for home schooled subjects. Talk to your place of worship or your Chamber of Commerce to find a local Home School Association. You can find moms who homeschool by joining Twitter
and then by going to TweepSearch and typing in “homeschool.”
Proofreading Many people such as publishers, students, aspiring authors, and even
bloggers need their products proofread before they submit them. I even found one
site requesting a proofreader proficient in Russian. This is good for caregivers who
would do better with “deadline” work as opposed to having to carve our a specific time to be able to work.
Elance, Odesk, and Guru are good sources
for this type of work. Tutoring Because learning does not come easily to everyone, there will always
be a need for tutoring. Tutoring can now be done both in the privacy of your home or via the Internet with students from near and far. Advanced technology, collaborative multi-media software, and the
Internet make this possible. Check out GetEducated.com, etutor.com and also Liveperson.com for possible tutoring needs and to advertise
your services. If you happen to be a lawyer, tutoring for the LSAT is in big demand.

Research Assistant
Many business professionals, authors, lawyers, and professors outsource their research needs in order to make better use of their
time. There are home-based positions available for research on nutrition, gardening, and crafts, for legal research, for Internet marketing research and many others. Nurses are often needed for
medical malpractice cases. Check out Virtual Vocations for ideas.
Content Writing There are many websites and blogs that are constantly seeking new
and original material for their readers and are willing to pay for this service.
Many websites, blogs and authors are also
looking for writers willing to submit articles and allow others to take credit for them. This is commonly known as ghost-writing.
Textbroker.com is one such service that uses
ghost writers and pays at varying rates depending upon the quality of writing.
If you have experience in a certain field or would like to gain more knowledge on a subject by writing a series of
articles on it, you can also submit your articles to eZineArticles.com. They do not pay for this service, but it’s a great way to become known
as a writer or an expert in a certain field.
There are also some sites that accept writers for term papers to be submitted by high
Education-Based Options

school and college students but because I wouldn’t advise a student to use this service, I can’t advise you, as a writer, to submit your work there.
One example of an ad I saw on-line is the following:
“Wanted: Lead Blogger for a Crafts Site”
Description: (Company A) is interested in finding a lead blogger who can help establish the voice of a crafts site and develop its audience.
Only applicants who have an understanding of how to conceive and optimize content for search engines and social media outlets such as Facebook, Digg, and Reddit will be seriously considered……Coaching
members of the community will also be a regular part of the day-to-day tasks.
Qualifications:
• 2 years of experience writing about crafts online
• A knack for working on your own and being a self-starter • Experience negotiating traffic-trading deals with partner sites
• Detail oriented
• Excellent communication skills • Ability to generate numerous story ideas and complete
them”
Is this kind of work something YOU could do?

Internet-Based Options With the Internet being accessible to so many more people and with
the advancement of easy to use software applications, it has made working from home even more popular.
If you happened to be employed in an arena where working from home is possible, don’t hesitate to suggest the idea to your employer.
Article Writing Although earning money by blogging is not as easy as it used to be,
it can still be done. Blogs allow a writer to reach a huge audience - take, for instance, the recent book and film of the same title “Julie and Julia” where Julie Powell blogged about creating all 524 recipes (in 365 days) from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Another blogging project that turned into a book is from Robyn Okrant at LivingOprah.com. Robyn experimented by living an entire year by following Oprah’s advice and blogged about it daily, keeping
track of both the amount of time and money spent.
Writing for someone else’s blog is also an option if you’d rather not take the time to maintain your own. HomeWithTheKids.com is a good site to find some interesting writing opportunities. They also offer
other ideas and advice about working from home.
If you’d like to write articles, Journalismjobs.com has freelance listings and also some online classes. And don’t forget about
Textbroker.com. Desktop Publishing Because many companies don’t have the budget, hiring a full-time
Internet-Based Options

employee simply to manage their printing needs is not an option. If you have a fairly good knowledge of technology, a decent computer and printer, you can create professional looking flyers, newsletters,
business cards and simple magazines from home. These can be sent out over the Internet or by regular mail. There are some great
reviews of the 2010 desktop publishing software review here. Paid Surveys There are several companies that offer a small payment or “points”
that translate into free items (some good, some not great) for completing surveys.
E-rewards.com offers a certain dollar
amount per survey (depending upon length) that can be used to purchase
items from THEIR store such as magazine subscriptions, airline or hotel reward points, or even a gift certificate to
a store. I have to admit that I completed surveys at this site in order to get a subscription to the Wall Street
Journal for 6 months and to The Wine Spectator for a year. Opinion Place Surveys offers small monetary rewards, anywhere from
$2.50 - $15.00 per survey.
Three others that I’ve heard of are American Consumer Opinion (acop.com), National Family Opinion (mysurvey.com) and Survey Savvy.com.*
REMINDER: Never pay anyone a fee in order to take their surveys.

Computer Programming Computer programming is big business and can easily be done at
home. It is also a good match for caregivers because it can be done with a dead-line in mind, rather than at a specific time. If you have
talent in this area, you can definitely continue to earn money from home. Guru, Odesk, Rent-a-Coder and Elance are sites where you can look for opportunities. They are abundant.
Transcription, Medical Transcription and Coding Recorded medical, legal and web cast material needs to be transcribed and while much of the medical community out-sources
their transcription needs to other countries, there are still some smaller community-based hospitals and physicians offices that
require these services. While medical transcription is a highly demanding job because doctors have accents, mumble and even eat
food while dictating (I‘ve heard them!), it can be very interesting. Of course, you should be able to type quickly and also own a
machine that enables you to use a foot pedal in conjunction with the keyboard, but these can be purchased quite readily.
Medical coding is something that can easily be done from home. It does require some knowledge in one or more medical specialties and
some credentials from coding associations but education for this can even be found on-line. Aviacode.com does on-line training.
RatRaceRebellion.com is a good source for these types of jobs and also has many other home-based ideas.
Virtual assistants are often looking for transcriptionists to help with
their overflow work. We’ll talk more about virtual assistants soon.

Website Development If you are able to do website development, template modification
and redesigns, code updates, and reviews then there is a great opportunity for you to earn some extra money at home. Many
corporations are seeing the value of having an on-line presence but need someone to help them do that. Also as more and more people are learning that there is another option besides working for
corporate America, there are more and more websites being developed.
There are many people who have great business ideas but are not technically proficient enough to develop their own web site. I would
be one of those people.
Again, ELance, Odesk, Ratracerebellion.com, and Guru are good places to post your skills. Of the 15,000 new monthly work-from-
homes being posted at Odesk, web development is highest in demand.
Video Editing
Video Editing is another means by which to earn money from home. The success of YouTube and other video
sites supports this view. Corporations and Internet businesses like to use
video as a compelling way to show their clients who they are and what they are about. Check out the
resources under “website development” to advertise your
services or seek positions.
Internet-Based Options

Also, if you are a good photographer, there are sites where you can post your work so that Internet businesses, bloggers, students, and newsletter producers have access to royalty free images by paying a
price to use them. Sites such as Clipart.com, Gettyimages.com, istockphoto.com, Jupiterimages.com (which I’ve seen used on
Oprah.com) and Shutterstock.com are sites to explore. You will need a good camera and some patience but the opportunity is there. This may also be a good way to get your care recipient out of the house
and into the car for a scenic drive.
Virtual Assistant This is another high demand work-from-home job and can cover
many areas. You can determine your offerings
from what you know how to do. This can
encompass working with websites, transcription, handling scheduling
tasks, working with e-mail and/or snail mail,
social media marketing, customer service, blog maintenance, pod casts.
The possibilities are almost endless.
You can establish your own Virtual Assistant service or you can work for another company. There are also classes available to increase your knowledge in this arena.
This is another work-from-home job that can mostly be scheduled
around your care-giving needs. Check out HomeWithTheKids.com, RatRaceRebellion.com, Odesk and Elance.

eBay Auction Sales eBay is an online auction site (once known as the World’s largest
garage sale) where you can auction off almost anything! A recent Neilsen survey said that the average household has 52 unused items
that have a combined worth $3000.00 or more. I know that’s true in my case and I’ve actually done some eBay auctions in order to de-clutter my closets and earn a bit of
extra cash. You would be surprised at what sells on eBay. I have a dear
friend who makes quite a bit of money on eBay and one of her most sought after categories of items is
used Brownie and Girl Scout clothing. She also gathers some of her items
from garage sales (another good outing idea for your care recipient).
eBay has become much easier to use and now with almost every home owning a digital camera; it is easy to upload photos of those things that you’d like to sell. You don’t need the fancy backgrounds
that some “eBay stores” use; they have ready made templates that work just as well. After you’ve done a few listings, you should be able
to list an item in under 5 minutes. Once you’ve sold it, it MIGHT require a trip to the post office but you can also go to USPS.com and print your pre-paid postage label and in many cases, the post office
will pick up the package at your front door.
Etsy If you are crafty, have craft-making items for sale or have vintage
items that you’d like to sell, then Etsy is a good place to earn some extra money. Hand-made items such as aprons, jewelry, pottery,
curtains, knitted, and crocheted items sell well.
Internet-Based Options

(Yes, I know...WHO has the time….but perhaps you may be able to work on a craft while supervising or sitting with your care recipient.) If you have a favorite craft that you no longer have much time to do,
you could also sell that particular line of craft ITEMS - you would just need to obtain a resale license and purchase your items wholesale.
This is a photo of a hand-made apron that I recently purchased on Etsy from
Janet. Isn’t it adorable?? (I collect aprons.) You can find her shop at
theemptynest.etsy.com. She also has a very cute blog at Janet’s blog.
Again, you could utilize USPS.com to print your pre-paid shipping labels and
have them retrieve your packages. They will even deliver Priority mailing
supplies to your home for free. Customer Service/Call Center Representative
If you are able to block off a certain amount of undisturbed time each day or on scheduled days, this could be a good source of income for you.
In this work-from-home job, you would assist customers with sales,
service and technical support transactions depending on their needs and subject to your industry specific expertise.
Their pay is usually offered at per minute, per call or guaranteed hourly rates. Some are commission based.
For instance LiveOps.com lists the following categories:
Internet-Based Options

• Inbound Direct Sales • Commissioned Agent Services • Casual Dining Services
• Customer Care • Licensed Insurance Sales
• Outbound Consultative Sales • Bilingual Phone Services (Spanish & French)
Other sites that offer this kind of work are VIPDesk.com, WorkingSolutions.com, AlpineAccess, Arise, and WestatHome.com.
For this type of work, one could expect to earn up to $2000.00 per month for 30-35 hours of work per week.
Voice-over Work If friends have told you that you have a voice that would be great on
radio, you might be able to earn some extra money doing voice over work. My
friend recently earned quite a substantial amount of
money by reading a book aloud in order to make it an audio book that the author
could offer as an on-line download. Other types of
services that are interested in this work are radio and on-line advertisers, upstart radio stations, and on-line blogs.
Voices.com lists opportunities and has tutorials. Elance is also a good source for possible positions.

NOTES
Service-Based Options

Service-Based Options There are several service-based ways to earn money from home
while being a caregiver. Often these options are based on knowledge that you already possess and because they require very little
overhead, they are a good choice for caregivers. You can work at these jobs part-time or full time depending upon your care recipient’s needs and as THEIR needs change, you have the ability to modify
your schedule accordingly.
Tax Preparation
Tax preparation by professionals has become very expensive and tax preparation software for the computer is often confusing and unreliable for the average person when more than just simple
deductions are taken.
If you have worked in the past as a CPA or an accountant, then you probably have all the skills needed in order to do this type of work. If you have not had experience, but are good with numbers, there are
courses available from H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, and even the IRS. Professional software makes it even easier.
You could also utilize your knowledge to check the tax returns of persons who have done them on their own to see if they are missing
any deductions.
Prepare a flyer and advertise at the local community centers, in the paper, at your place of worship or even the senior centers in your
area. You’ll want to begin advertising well before tax season hits. Concierge Service Concierge services are a relatively new trend and run on the most
Service-Based Options

basic of principles. People want things done and either don’t have the time to do them or cannot do them anymore due to aging or disabilities. Everything from grocery shopping, picking up dry
cleaning, researching wine storage units on the Internet to delivering a present can be done by a
concierge service. The best part: you can take your care recipient along with you on most of the jobs.
You may also be able to transport other senior citizens to
appointments but check with your city laws and insurance provider before doing so.
Salon Services If you were previously a
cosmetologist, barber or manicurist, you may be able to continue doing this type of work in your home. Pet grooming could also be done in the home in some instances.
Check your local zoning laws for specifics. A license is required.
Speaking of Pets No, I’m not going to suggest dog walking or pet sitting because
unfamiliar animals and seniors could be a dangerous combination when walking side by side, but if you are good with animals, pet
bathing could easily be done from your home. It wouldn’t require much space and is another area where pet owners may not be able to find the time to do it themselves.
One gal I know makes homemade dog treats in various flavors and is
able to sell them at the local farmer’s market. Again, check your local ordinances in regards to what food items may be sold from
Service-Based Options

home. You can easily find a dog bone shaped cookie cutter at most craft stores.
Today’s pets also require a wardrobe, it seems, so if you are good at sewing,
fashioning clothing for our furry friends is another way to earn a bit of extra income. These items could be
sold on Etsy, craft shows or at local pet boutiques.
Home Storage Space
This is an idea I just recently heard about. If your children are grown and
gone and you have a spare bedroom, some room in the garage or even a parking spot, you can earn some money by renting out the
space! StoreAtMyHouse.com is a website where you can list your storage
possibilities. (This particular idea requires some caution and background checking but it might inspire you to think of other
interesting ways to earn some pocket change.) Or perhaps you could rent the space to a trusted neighbor.
Sewing and Alterations
My mother did this for many years to earn a bit of extra income while we were being raised. She also made Barbie
clothes….some absolutely gorgeous gowns, several of which I still have! She
also hand knit Barbie sweaters.
Service-Based Options
©2010 Shelley Webb R.N. 24 www.LessStressMovie.com
In fact, I must tell you this story. My younger sister, who would have been 3 at the time, was underfoot while an older lady was speaking to my mother about having a dress altered. She happened to pick up
the pin cushion, at which point, the lady said to my sister “No, no. Put that pin cushion down. You might get hurt with those pins.” For
the next 10 minutes, my sister hid in the closet and every few moments opened the door and shouted out “Stupid Gramma!” and slammed the door shut. My mother said that fortunately, the client
didn’t understand what my sister was saying. WHEW!
So if you have any talent in this area, there are always people who need pants hemmed, dresses or shirts taken in or out, buttons replaced and holes repaired. In fact, Oprah Winfrey advises that all
clothing should be tailored to the specifics of the wearer.
Quilting
I could probably have put quilting under the Etsy subheading which covers the
arts and crafts arena but quilting in and of itself is also
a service industry. There are many people who like to put quilts together but who
either don’t want to take the time to do the quilting
portion or they don’t feel that they have the talent it takes to do it well enough.
If you have talent in this area, this is another excellent source of
income and does not have to be done at a specific time.
Service-Based Options
©2010 Shelley Webb R.N. 25 www.LessStressMovie.com
A lady who lives in my area started out by doing this in her spare time. She then began carrying some material, threads, quilting books and patterns and before she knew it, she had a large inventory and
was conducting classes.
Mystery Shopping I was reluctant to bring up this option because there are so many
scams involved in this industry……BUT a friend of mine who worked as a mystery shopper enabled me to score an XBOX 360 for my son
for Christmas when there were NONE available so I became a fan. This type of work pays $5.00 - $20.00 per experience and often
allows you to keep certain products or eat for free. I think this would be a good way to determine how seniors are treated in our
community. Taking your loved one with you would be enlightening.
Probable legitimate websites for mystery shoppers: Mysteryshops.com, ExperienceExchange.com, MysteryGuestInc.com* and MarketForce.com.
*According to MSN Money Central at MSN.com
Elder Day Care
If you enjoy caring for your aging parent or loved one and you have a home that is appropriately designed for
eldercare (meaning bathrooms that are on the main floor and which are equipped with grab bars and other safety equipment, lighting in
the hallways, accessible entryways, etc.), you might be able to care for an additional elder or
two during the day. You would need to do some research on community licensing and
Service-Based Options

insurance requirements first, of course, but there will definitely be an increasing need for elder day care in the future. And wouldn’t it be nice if our elders could spend their days in reliable and safe family
care homes, rather than institutionalized settings?
Bookkeeping If you have a knack for numbers, you might consider being a home-
based bookkeeper. A bookkeeper’s job is to ensure that a business’ financial transactions are recorded appropriately and that all
supporting documentation is current and accurate. A bookkeeper can earn between $25.00 and $50.00 an hour in
another type of business that can be “chunked out” to fit your schedule as a caregiver. Because there are many small businesses
that cannot afford a full-time bookkeeper, this line of work is a good opportunity for home-based work. Software, such as Quicken and
QuickBooks, makes it even easier. Entrepreneur magazine gives some valuable hints as to starting a
home-based business in this article.
Repair Service Consumers need to be able to count on reliable repair services for all
kinds of things, from computers to lawn mowers to broken furniture. This is a business that could easily be operated out of your home or
garage and can be done during “down time”. The types of items which you offer to repair can be based on experience and knowledge. You could advertise by word-of-mouth or by posting flyers in
neighborhood shops and community centers. You’ll need to look into possible insurance and licensing needs for operating your repair
business in your local area.

Consulting Consulting opportunities are generally based upon your experiences
in the work force or on a passion for which you’ve spent a lot of time studying. Finding the consulting niche that fits in with your skill set is
the key to success. For instance, one might say that I am a consultant to caregivers, having experienced the care-giving role and also having had a 30 year career as a registered nurse. Other areas
of consulting may have to do with finances, travel destinations, wine, food, child rearing, crafts, pets, etc.
Sales Options

Sales Options For caregivers, home-based sales is an area that is limited by the
amount of time that your care recipient needs and/or by the amount of time that you are able to leave your care recipient in someone
else’s capable hands. So I won’t spend a lot of time on this area.
For instance, my father needed someone
around him at all times and I didn’t have family members close-by who could take
over for me. Therefore, my time away from home was very limited. Never-the-
less, I did not need to spend every waking moment hovering over him…so I began a home-based gift basket
business called Lambs and Ivy Gift Baskets (note the shameful plug).
Because this business had a web presence (known as e-commerce), it didn’t need a store-front in order to
receive orders. It did, however, need inventory and that was a bit costly upfront.
I’ve also noticed that some other home-based business partners have web presences and as such, don’t require the “home parties” that
they once used to do. My friend sells Avon products and has her information on a company sponsored site where products can be
ordered and sent directly to buyers.
Other companies that you might consider are Pampered Chef and Tupperware for kitchen utensils, Mary Kay, Color Me Beautiful and The Body Shop for beauty items, Shaklee for organic cleaning
products, Wine Shop at Home for wine, PartyLite, MiaBela and Scentsy for candles, CookieLee and Lia Sophia for jewelry, Monavie,

Usana, and again Shaklee for vitamin related products, Baby Crazy and Discovery Toys for child related items, and Essence of Romance for well…..you know.
I came across an interesting web site Host A Party Online.com where you can list your company (many of the above companies are
included) and people who visit the website can buy directly from you. They even have an international capability.
While these direct sales positions really require
quite a bit of time and energy in order to make a decent living, they
may be something that can be started part-time
and…when that sad day comes that conditions
change, they can be done on a full-time basis.

I hope that I’ve given you at least one idea that you can use or some information that will inspire other ideas from you. Only you know
exactly how much time and energy you can put into these activities.
But if there is something in here that helps you generate enough pocket change in order to buy yourself something pretty (or handsome as the case may be), or afford to go to dinner and a movie
or a sporting event with a friend, then it was worth reading.
Best wishes and remember: Always be intentional in taking care of yourself as well as your loved one.
