or the past 100 years, Shell in the Philippines has grown by leaps and bounds proving to all sundry that despite and in spite of obstacles and challenges, the leading energy brand

will continue its role as an able partner of the government, civil society and the private sector in helping build a nation. And the same agility, vigor, and tenacity will continue to be exhibited by Shell in 2015 and in the next 100 years. In this issue of Shell World Philippines magazine, Shell showcases its numerous projects that impact millions around the country.

One of the major features in this issue will make you appreciate how young engineering students from all over Asia Pacific displayed their ability in designing and building energy efficient cars that saw action on the tracks of the 2015 Shell Eco-marathon Asia which was the second successful run of SEM Asia in Manila. More than recognition, the students obtained knowledge and experience which helped ignite their interest in creating a better energy future in face of rising energy challenge.

Envisioned to further help boost economic potential of Visayas and Mindanao, Shell is completing its landmark project in Cagayan de Oro called North Mindanao Import Facility – a multi-billion peso fuel facility which will cater to the power and energy needs of millions of residents and industries in the area.

Shell in the Philippines also continues to fortify its position as a significant contributor to Shell’s global business with the outstanding performance of Shell Business Operations (SBO) – Manila. With close to 3,500 employees, SBO-Manila has gone a long way after more than a decade of delivering first class service and partnership to throngs of satisfied customers worldwide. Meanwhile, Shell Aviation in the Philippines continues to build a winning spirit across the global organisation with its relentless pursuit for improved performance by delivering exemplary practices in safety and operational excellence that were globally recognised.

In this issue, we also feature how Shell finds ways to provide excellent customer experience in every gas up. The Shell FuelSave story tells the story of how motorists do more in their everyday life by choosing the right fuel for their vehicles and make every road experience better.

Always aiming for excellence, Shell harvested numerous awards from prestigious award-giving organisations here and abroad for delivering best practices in communications and public relations. These achievements made Shell’s centennial celebration sparkle and strengthened Shell’s reputation as a top business communicator and a strong supporter of nation building.

Continuing its legacy of nation building, Shell continuously invests on various community development projects to ensure that its next 100 years remains a story of success not just for Shell but for communities where it operates.

Lastly, I wish to bid goodbye to all of you and say thanks for all the support you have given me and your CX/ER department. It has been a memorable three years and I will forever be proud and humbled at the same time for the chance to work with Shell locally, regionally, and globally.

Thank you to all the avid readers of Shell World Philippines magazine for making it your reading companion for many years. It was a pleasure and an honour to produce this magazine for you. As I move on to the next chapter of my life, rest assured I will never forget the years I, along with my other CX/ER colleagues, had spent defending and promoting the brand. I will always be buoyed by the happy moments I spent with Shell colleagues who I consider as friends and family. Sa inyong lahat, maraming maraming salamat… Signing off with a heavy heart,

hell has taken steps to actively participate in

boosting the potential of Visayas and Mindanao as primary economic centres by establishing a fuel import facility to help secure a stable source of energy for the said areas.

Dubbed as the North Mindanao Import Facility (NMIF), Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation is putting up this multi-billion peso fuel import facility in Cagayan de Oro which is expected to cater to the power and energy needs of millions of residents, motorists and industrial customers like mining and power plants in Visayas and Mindanao.

This development was revealed by the Philippine Ports Authority, and the owner and operator of the Cagayan de Oro port, which will serve as the vital site

of the import facility project. The announcement coincided with the commemoration of the centenary year of Shell in the Philippines, a frontrunner in gas technology and smarter mobility in the country. This landmark project supports Shell’s vision of establishing an import facility terminal in Mindanao to improve supply chain cost competitiveness and realise its long-term business growth goals.

WHAT MAKES NMIF DIFFERENT?While the facility is earmarked to serve the fuel requirements of VisMin area, NMIF is endowed with features that meet world-class standards. Commissioning only the best suppliers in building the facility ensures that it will be a showcase of innovation with its soil cement columns, huge tanks, motor-operated valves, terminal automated system using Omega

5000 for both truck and barge loading, and a control room with telemetering system. “This is the first import facility for Shell in the country,” said NMIF Project Manager Marlon Dejadina. “NMIF lives up to being a world-class facility with its fully-automated process from jetty loading to the tank loading using OMEGA 5000,” he added. Facility specifications show that it will use 16” and 18” pipelines for its products and 24” pipelines for its firewater system. NMIF is considered the most advanced in the East, and the first medium range vessel import facility in Shell’s Trading and Supply network.

Despite the daunting scale of the project, challenges encountered in the early stage were addressed efficiently by the Shell team behind this project. Constant dialogue with leaders of the surrounding communities ensured a smooth ground-breaking ceremony for the project and continuous project operations. Delays due to non-technical risks, such as protests from the informal settlers and objections from the local government, were mitigated with peaceful negotiations and engagements.

Shell has partnered with the Japan Gas Corporation Philippines, Bauer Foundations Philippines Inc., Riofil Corporation, CB&I, AG&P, ECDI, Barangay Puntod

Members, and the Philippine Ports Authority in Cagayan de Oro to ensure the completion and success of the NMIF project.

PUSHING FOR ENERGY SECURITYNMIF is aligned with the policy thrust of the Department of Energy (DoE) to promote investment in the energy sector. It promises to contribute to two of DoE’s directives under the Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016, which are to promote development and upgrade of the downstream infrastructure and to update the Oil Supply Contingency Plan through the establishment of oil stockpiles. Moreover, the facility will enable Shell to import Euro IV-compliant fuels by January 2016. The NMIF aims to provide an additional source point for fuels which will be distributed to depots in the Visayas and Mindanao. The facility will contribute to increased security of energy supply as it will provide additional storage capacity of finished petroleum products. At the same time, the facility will help reduce maritime risks as the source of petroleum products is closer to the intended distribution

points. The strategic location of Cagayan de Oro (CDO), being centrally-located in Visayas and Mindanao, continues to attract investors, making it a prime investment destination. It is the melting pot of Mindanao because of its accessibility, business growth, and tourism potential. Through the years, CDO has risen to become one of the most progressive and competitive cities in the country. While CDO shows promise in being one of fastest growing provinces, it is also a cradle of sustainable progress for Visayas and Mindanao as Shell Philippines builds NMIF today for a more sustainable energy future.

WORKING FOR ASUSTAINABLE FUTUREThe NMIF project has been reaping both internal and external recognition for delivering a sterling record on safety performance. It bagged an Award of Merit from the Safety Organization of the Philippines during its 47th National Industry Safety Convention themed “Facing Challenges: Gaining from Experiences” for achieving 1 million safe man-hours without

lost time accident (LTA). The convention aimed to motivate industries to prevail over occupational safety and health challenges by sharing best practices and strengthening the advocacy of a healthy and safe work environment. The project also bagged two Shell Global awards, namely the 2014 Trading and Supply Executive Vice President (EVP) Award and the Excellence Every Day VP Award. These awards recognise outstanding safety milestones as well as breakthrough performances that individuals and teams make across the business. For the inaugural Trading & Supply Award programme, only 12 winners were named from over 80 nominations. Despite having 800 work force in a complex and challenging environment, NMIF has achieved a sterling safety performance with close to 2 million man-hours lost time injury-free to date. The NMIF Team is committed to pursuing an injury-free and safe environment by continuously improving safety programmes to encourage employees and contractors to take safety personally. SWP

CONTINUING THE SAGA ON GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS

SHELL AVIATION PHILIPPINES:

Shell Aviation in the Philippines continues to build a winning spirit across the global organisation through a culture of frequent and visible recognition for its employees. The Philippine team is flying high with its relentless pursuit for improved performance by delivering exemplary practices in safety and operational excellence. By Josa Marie Salazar

which are delivered from the Shell Terminals (Tabangao/Pandacan) to JOCASP via road bridgers, are cleared into plane refuelling after their necessary certificates and safety processes are completed. There are three options to refuel a plane: first is using a refueller truck; the second one is refuelling using a hydrant dispenser; and the last is refuelling using a combination of both processes.

The first process of refuelling, using a refueller truck, is utilised on aircraft parking bays with non-operational hydrant lines or no hydrant system. The operations team employs this refuelling process for aircrafts that require minimal quantity of fuel. However, if the aircraft parking bay has an operational hydrant system, the hydrant dispenser is used instead. For any aircraft that requires large quantity of fuel, the tandem of hydrant dispenser and bridger truck refuelling is opted by the operations team.

As of August 2014, Shell Aviation Philippines has an average throughput of 923 kilo litres per day (klpd) in NAIA and 49 klpd in Clark, Pampanga. Every month, SAV PH refuels its airline customers with an average of 28.0 million litres and 1.5 million litres in

NAIA and Clark, respectively. In its years of operation, Shell Aviation Philippines is consistently delivering effectively to its airline customers. Because of the team’s reliable performance, it was able to win huge accounts and continuously earn the trust of various airline customers such as Philippine Airlines, Korean Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Japan Airlines/Jet Star Japan, Jet Star Asia and Jet Star International, All Nippon Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airways, China Eastern, Air China, China Airlines, Capiteq (Air North), Phil Air Asia, Air Asia Malaysia, Asiana Airlines, Virgin Australia, Lufthansa Airline, and other ad hoc customers.

With all the internal and global achievements that the Shell Aviation Philippines is receiving, Abina does not forget to give credits to his team. “These awards wouldn’t be possible without the whole SAV PH Team’s relentless pursuit for operational excellence in both HSSE as well as in partnering with our Sales and BD Teams in growing the Aviation business in the Philippines. These are very encouraging. To my team, let’s keep up the good work!” said Abina. SWP

n the recent years, Shell Aviation Philippines has been earning recognition and

awards for its outstanding safety and operational performance. Today, it is globally recognised for delivering world-class service to its growing number of customers, owing to its commitment to excellence reflected in all aspects of its operations. Recently, Shell Aviation Philippines was recognised with the Vice President (VP) Awards for its excellence in safety compliance and value delivery to the company. The VP Awards, which is given on a quarterly basis, aims to highlight the best and noteworthy examples of special contributions to the company. This year, the Global Shell Aviation (SAV) cited the Philippine team with second quarter (Q2) VP Awards on HSSE and Value Delivery.

GAINING TRUST IN AVIATION THROUGH OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCEOne of the two VP Awards Shell

Aviation Philippines received is the Value Delivery on improved margins in Q2. Through the collective effort of the team, they were able to bring the business to a higher ground – performing excellently in terms of better delivery of business targets.

According to Shell Aviation Philippines Operations Manager Melchor “Jun” Abina, Jr., they were able to achieve such feat through the support of Aviation Operations, all in a sustained level of operational excellence of into-plane operations.

Following highest standards in a day in-day out basis, Shell Aviation Philippines was able to gain the trust of airlines, which helped in their renewal of contracts in Manila airport for the second quarter of 2014. The win brought additional C4 margins of US$8.6 million annually.

“It’s a matter of performing well, doing it like it’s the only thing you are meant to do. We were

able to prove to them (airlines) that delivering excellently to them is what we value the most. They managed to see it and the trust to Shell Aviation Philippines was continuously built,” said Abina, sharing the formula behind their team’s outstanding performance.

SAFETY IS ON TOP OF EVERYTHINGIn June 2014, the SAV PH team recorded 1,000 days of no harm to people and no leaks in their operations. A testament to Shell’s focus and efforts for its Goal Zero journey, Shell Aviation Philippines was cited for achieving 1,000 Days of Goal Zero.

The team’s proactive Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) thinking went hand in hand with their top safety performance. The SAV PH Operations Manager explained that every day is not just “Aviation Operations” day. On top of everything is pursuing the goal of no harm to

I

people and reinforcing Shell’s commitment to HSSE and Social Performance (SP).

“The safety rules in Shell offices are not for compliance alone. Do it to comply with the standard process and the staff will become complacent. Complacence means danger – it is critical to always put our minds on the work and not work on it in a robot-like process. The secret here is to always think of the lives – yours and your colleagues and the people around you – that will be at risk if you become complacent with safety,” said Abina.

SHELL AVIATION PHILIPPINES AT A GLANCEThe Shell Aviation Philippines is located at the Joint Oil Companies Aviation Fuel Storage Plant (JOCASP) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) passenger terminal 1, and adjacent on the other side with the terminal 2 building. The primary role of Shell Aviation operations team is to ensure meeting of delivery objectives and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in line with its main business of providing into plane fuelling services safely and delivering on-time and on-specs products to customer for both domestic and international customers. SBO-MANILA: A PHILIPPINE-MADE BRAND OF EXCELLENCE After more than a decade of delivering excellent operations and throngs of satisfied customers worldwide, Shell Business Operations - Manila defines what world-class business process outsourcing is about. By Frandy B. Martir and Jun Jay G. Jimenez

hen Shell Business Operations (SBO) - Manila was

established 11 years ago, who would ever thought that a mere 49 staff who worked their way in servicing a small number of onshore business partners and stakeholders would pave the way for a stronger and now globally recognised organisation?

Now standing proud and successful with around 3,500 employees, SBO-Manila has gone a long way after more than a decade of continued global excellence and commitment to first class service and partnership.

“It was not an easy trek, though the odds were pretty clear at the start. Definitely, it was not a moment that we can easily call the shot at one glance,” said Edralin Payongayong, Shell Business Operations General Manager for the Manila Centre. “The employees who started and worked their way in ensuring that business continuity and operations were not disrupted especially during the critical migration phase were significant and instrumental to the success of the Centre. There have been many critical and challenging times, but I can assure you that these challenging times played an

important role for us to see which part of our operations we need to improve more and determine which ones our teams are stronger at. On the other hand, and more than anything else, I marvel on the many good times that we all shared which energised us to make the Centre successful as it is today,” he added.

MANILA MADE THE CUT Manila was not the lone choice when the time for selecting the right location came for Shell to establish its first Shell Shared Service Centre. It was the company’s first venture into the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)

industry, and the stakes were high.

“When the team came to the Philippines, we knew that they have pretty much settled down with one location and that was not Manila,” said Edgar Chua, Shell companies in the Philippines Country Chairman. “We were told that since they were already in Asia, the team decided to make a side trip to the Philippines. We met with them, we showed them what the Filipinos are capable of achieving, and the rest is what we now see as a globally recognised Shell Business Operations Centre based in Manila,” Chua enthused with pride.

Like the usual foreign traveler who gets mesmerised with the sights and sounds after his first trip to the Philippines, the Shell Team in-charge of putting up the Shared Services business made a 180-degree turn the moment they saw and realised

the potentials of the country.

With its strategic geographical location, Shell’s strong business presence, and a vast supply of professionals who are capable to communicate in English, Manila made its mark as a business-viable location that would advance Shell’s partnership and services to its customers globally.

BREAKING THE BARRIERS OF SILO OPERATIONS Championing the spirit of teamwork and collaboration, the Manila Centre started to roll swiftly with inspired, pioneering team members who were guided by the ideals and values of the company. “Looking back, we established who we are, and looking ahead, we define our journey. At present, our focus shifted from a service-oriented mentality to a mindset driven by partnership and business value,” said Noel Paraso, who was once General Manager

of SBO-Manila and recently retired from service as Shell Country Finance Lead and Global Operations Manager for Finance Operations Data.

“Management made sure that the transition was smooth and had value by equipping our team with the right skills and the requisite continuous improvement mentality which empowered them not just to survive the day-to-day challenges, but also embrace full accountability for the business activities after the critical migration phase,” Paraso added.

The changes to how the system operates and the dynamics of the team continued to outperform itself even after a successful kick-off. It was during the early years of the Centre that the value of sustainability came into the picture. “We have added the flavour of a true Filipino workmanship and

W

excellence, but what we then had to secure was to make these triumphs sustainable while keeping our people in good shape, safe, and living a balanced life,” said Payongayong.

Shell’s commitment to safety is its license to operate. But in the BPO context, it continues to be a challenge given the Centre’s diverse working hours and operational demands from customers based in time zones different from that of Manila.

Continuously making the Centre an ideal workplace, various resilience programmes were evident across all departments allowing people to shape up their growth according to what works for them, while maintaining their optimum operational delivery and at the same time enjoy the company of friends and extended family members.

HONING MY CAREER IN A PLACE I CALL “HOME” Growing in a company that takes care of its people is a familiar thought among Shell staff. As many of us now are able to connect to the world at a click of a finger, opportunities are endless and choices are vast. But what makes Shell a company to grow old with? We’ve asked some of our colleagues this question, and here’s what they have to say:

“Growth, stability and better opportunities like exposure outside of the Philippines – Shell being a global company.” – Liz Fernandez

“I believe in the company’s commitment to Ethics and Compliance and its rich General Business Principles – it is aligned with my personal

values. Shell takes care of its people in a similar way that you would do for your family. This is the reason why I stayed this long.” – Agnes Estopo

“A professional company who takes care of its employees…The Best.” – Vic Pascual

IN THE LEAGUE OF NATION BUILDERS SBO-Manila’s unique quality of being able to house the most number of staff at a given time and performing and delivering value-adding partnership to both local and global stakeholders is what sets it apart. With around 3,500 staff working on diverse hours and work shifts have earned for the Centre to be recognised as the biggest in the Shell global community.

Shell is also known for its advocacies supporting sports, arts, education, and environment preservation in tune with Shell’s commitment to sustainable development. Many of these social investment programmes and volunteerism projects are propelled due to the commitment of our colleagues in SBO-Manila that springs from their love for social service and community volunteerism. “Their simple acts of charity and volunteering their time for social and community service and projects are truly admirable,” said Jackie Ampil, Pilipinas Shell Social Investment Manager.

What began as their way of instilling fun at work created a wave of support from all staff across all Functions and Departments to Shell’s sustainable development projects thru internal fund raising activities such as the Search for Mr. and Ms. SBO-

Manila. These served as additional platforms for staff to voluntarily give something for environmental cause, education, and the community especially during disaster relief operations. “I am touched with how our colleagues in SBO-Manila has put their 3,500 strong workforce to help propel their corporate social responsibility projects in their own way,” added Ampil.

TO ANOTHER DECADE OF EXCELLENCE More than a decade of world-class performance has given SBO-Manila the platform to move ahead and look forward to another decade of excellence.

The humble beginnings of the Centre from 49 to 3,500 employees and growing is a testament to the trust and confidence of Shell management in its ability to consistently deliver quality service and in building world-class partnership.

In his message to SBO-Manila staff, Jawwad Cheema, Vice President–Shell Business Service Centres said, “This milestone is brought by the hard work, efficient and effective collaboration, and resiliency of our team in Manila – a clear testament on how the Centre has grown in the past decade. Our people made the difference real.”

Armed with Shell’s core values and commitment to safety while embracing the Shell General Business Principles which are exemplified in its daily operations, SBO-Manila is set to soar higher to deliver valuable milestones in the coming years. SWP

iming to conquer more miles with less fuel? Paired with good driving

behaviours, your best option to keep your car running smoothly and efficiently is here, Shell FuelSave – regular priced fuels designed to last longer. Available in 23 countries, Shell FuelSave Gasoline and Diesel contain active efficiency ingredients and are designed to improve energy efficiency from the very first tank.

With over 100 years of experience in creating some of the world’s most advanced fuels, Shell designed Shell FuelSave fuels to help motorists get to where they need and give them savings on their fuel cost.

FACT OR FICTION A study released by Edelman Berland in December 2014 uncovers the extraordinary lengths Filipinos are willing to

go to in order to save fuel and cut their driving costs. The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction report, which analyses the driving behaviours of 1,000 Filipino drivers aged 18 to 40, reveals that while 92% see being fuel efficient as important, 75% admit they don’t know how.

What’s even more interesting is that more than half or 53% of the drivers surveyed say they feel anxious trying to decide how best to save fuel, leading many to believe in a collection of absurd fuel saving myths.

The research shows 80% of drivers believe warming up their engine before setting off will make them more fuel efficient, while 57% think filling up at night does the same trick. Shockingly, nearly half or 45% even believe ‘burping’ their cars to release air pockets in the tank will help them save fuel.

Unfortunately for the majority of the country’s driving population, none of these fuel efficiency myths help in reducing fuel costs. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Vice President for Retail Anthony Lawrence Yam commented, “The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows just how important saving fuel has become to motorists, along with the incredible ways they try to be more fuel efficient. Some of the beliefs revealed through the study were actually wasting fuel rather than helping to conserve it.”

To help drivers differentiate fact from fiction, Shell aims to turn myth followers into fuel efficiency pros by encouraging drivers to use Shell FuelSave fuels that are scientifically designed to last longer and by demonstrating more effective ways to drive smartly.

The report also reveals that the confusion on the road is in stark contrast to what goes on inside Filipino homes, where Filipinos conserve energy by limiting their electrical use but not their fuel consumption. Indeed, while 88% of people say they frequently turn off the lights to save energy when leaving the house, only 4 in 10 or 42% frequently remove excess weight from their boot or backseat to make their vehicles lighter and effectively helping drivers to save on fuel. A CHALLENGE FOR FUEL EFFICIENCYA prelude to 2015 Shell Eco-marathon Asia was the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge held last February 11 where television personality Bianca Gonzalez was crowned as Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year for the second year. She drove a 130 kilometre route together with brilliant young minds to discover which driving practices are proven to help save fuel. Gonzalez faced the challenge with select media representatives who attempted to outwit their opponents on a road trip from Manila to Subic learning the difference between fuel efficiency facts and myths as they go through pit stops with challenges along the route. Inspired by the success of the celebrity driving challenge, a challenge among Shell staff was held where one representative per business unit was chosen to act as ‘ambassador” for fuel efficiency and was in charge of recruiting team members.

Three teams with four members from Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX), Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) and Shell Business Operations (SBO) went

head to head in a 218-km drive from Makati to Batangas and back, which tested their wits and driving practices. The whole-day activity was officially kicked off with a briefing of the teams, followed by their initial top-up and challenge in the first pit stop. The three team challengers immediately set out for their long, challenge-filled drive, keeping in mind lessons on fuel efficiency. Approaching the halfway point, they joined a small forum wherein Shell Fuels Scientist Mae Ascan, shared the significance of shifting to fuel saving practices, and disproved the common beliefs shared among drivers.

The 218-km drive concluded with the announcement of winners. Team White SPEX came in third with a total of 23 points. Clinching second place was Team Green PSPC by garnering 55 points. Lastly, Team Red SBO was declared champion by besting the competing teams with a total of 73 points.

MAKING A CHOICEMaking the right choice is always difficult when faced with countless decisions each day, but Shell makes it easier for motorists to make fuel efficient

decisions with Shell FuelSave. Driving on the road becomes easier for the motorists as they can easily pick out Shell FuelSave from among many choices as it offers value for money because it is designed to last longer, coupled with proper driving habits that help motorists accomplish more each day.

“We at Shell want to educate drivers on how they can make their fuel last longer,” said Yam. “We have shared countless tips on how to be more fuel efficient, but Filipinos always think of ingenious ways on their own.”

“The Driving Challenge allows our participants to experience Shell FuelSave, and the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows Filipino motorists what they should and should not do when it comes to being more fuel efficient,” Yam added.

All motorists can be more fuel efficient by driving smarter and use a fuel whose quality and efficiency they cannot doubt such as Shell FuelSave – a regular priced fuel designed to last longer.

With Shell FuelSave, motorists make the right choice to make their experience on the road better each day. SWP

As Manila once again opened its doors for the Asian leg of the Shell Eco-marathon, engineering students all over Asia Pacific took home more than just recognition but a wealth of knowledge and experience in facing the energy challenge. By Allenor Enciso and Warlou Joyce Antonio

undreds of great and young engineering minds across Asia set forth

towards the race for ingenuity. The Shell Eco-marathon Asia (SEMA) once again pooled together aspiring leaders of innovation to take on the challenge of smarter mobility.

In its 30th year globally and 6th Asian-leg edition, Manila successfully welcomed, for the second time around, more than 120 student-teams from 17 countries all over Asia. Prototype and urban concept student-built cars were showcased and designed to run the farthest distance with the least amount of fuel used. Being the host country for this grand festivity, the Philippines had 29 student teams coming from 21 universities nationwide.

“I’m proud to see more teams and nations joining the Shell Eco-marathon family this year. It’s very impressive that new starters from countries like Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bangladesh have made successful runs and recorded results in their first year, and I look forward to welcoming more newcomers in the next edition,” said Shell Eco-marathon Technical Director Norman Koch.

SHELL ECO-MARATHON ASIA: NURTURING YOUTH INGENUITY FOR A BETTER ENERGY FUTURE

While SEMA ultimately tests the fuel efficiency of the innovative vehicles, the underlying message of the event is enjoining the youth to collaborate towards a single goal – shaping the future of energy and mobility.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS AND PROPORTIONSStudent-teams set out to top their previous year’s record mileages, and new entrants attempt to make great strides in this year’s SEMA.

This time around, apart from attempts to conquer the competition, feats were recorded as entrants from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam have stamped new records in the street circuit challenge.

Participants witnessed as three teams broke records under the Protoype category. Japan’s Clean Diesel Team from Hyogo Prefectural Tajima Technical Institute drove 1,165 km/l equivalent on their first run, outdoing last year’s 717.6 km/l for the Diesel category. Thailand’s Team NSTRU Eco-Racing from Si Thammarat Rajabhat University also set the bar higher as they achieved 451 km/kWh for the Battery Electric Category. Lastly,

Philippine contingent takes pride in representing the country in this year’s street circuit challenge.

Malaysia’s Team UiTM Eco-Sprint from Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam surpassed last year’s record by driving an equivalent of 315 km/m3 for the Hydrogren Fuel Cell category.

Under the UrbanConcept category, Indonesia’s ITS Team 2 from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember doubled last year’s results as they registered 153 km/l for the Diesel category. Vietnam’s Team LH-Gold Energy from Lac Hong University, on the other hand, achieved 164 km/l on ethanol.

Philippines was also a force to be reckoned with as two local teams clinched a fair share of top awards under both categories.

Team UP from University of the Philippines-Diliman got the highest mileage in the Battery Electric (UrbanConcept) category. Team adviser for electronics Guadan Albert Chekov Castillo of Team UP took great pride in this accomplishment. “Our specialty really is battery electronics, and UP has the only laboratory in the Philippines that taught us how to produce industry grade motor controller,” said Castillo.

The Team TIP Mileage Proto from Technological Institute of the Philippines wins the Shell Helix Tribology Off-track Award for their brilliant execution of lubrication engineering principles.

Showcasing excellence in battery electronics, Team UP from the University of the Philippines Diliman bagged the first place in the Battery Electric – UrbanConcept category.

Another team which achieved the highest mileage for the Gasoline (Prototype) category was the De La Salle University (DLSU) Eco Car Team.

Apart from these impressive records, the Shell Helix Tribology Award was given to Team TIP Mileage Proto from Technological Institute of the Philippines for their clever use of lubrication engineering principles.

BEYOND RECOGNITION AND PRESTIGE Sharing mutual passion in shaping the fuel efficiency landscape, the teams believed that SEMA was more of a learning experience than a competition. Everyone’s a winner, regardless if they received an award or not, since what they consider more important was working together to address the global energy challenge.

“It’s not just all about competition, but about shared knowledge as well,” said driver and leader of Team Alfaisal from Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia Abdulmoshin Albabtain. “Several teams came to help us as we experienced challenges along the way. It was all for one and one for all.”

Aside from being a platform for healthy competition, it was a venue for youth empowerment which opened opportunities for discussion on energy security and sustainable mobility.

“The biggest contribution of Shell Eco-marathon is the production of 10,000 skilled and motivated students each year who take with them a wealth of knowledge and experience that they can use in the workplace. And it is not only limited to technical knowledge,” said Koch.

EXPERIENCING INNOVATIONWith this year’s huge turnout of over 47,000 attendees, SEMA served as a huge stage to celebrate bright young minds and engage the public about fuel efficiency and smarter mobility.

“Shell Eco-marathon is a crucible of innovation. A place where good ideas on energy efficiency and smart design can get their first real-world trials. Maybe one of these students will go on to design the car of the future,” said Shell’s Chief Human Resources and Corporate Officer Hugh Mitchell.

Apart from the street circuit challenge, SEMA showcased a “fan zone”, an interactive attraction where participants were taught the significance of taking responsibility in safeguarding the world’s resources and adopting fuel efficient habits.

Jeruz Gabriel Madlangbayan, a DLSU Dasmariñas student, expressed his excitement in being able to visit SEMA. “I’m happy to be able to go to this event. This is my first time here and there are a lot of innovations to see. It is very inspiring to be in this place as an engineering student,” he said.

SEMA serves as an educational platform which can help local and international visitors alike to realize that shaping a sustainable energy future starts with initiative and collective effort.

In the words of Shell companies in the Philippines Country Chairman Edgar Chua, “Shell Eco-marathon is about inspiring the youth to come up with solutions for the future. This innovation will help us look at smarter mobility, and explore new type of fuel which can be more sustainable.”

ABOUT SHELL ECO-MARATHONShell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the United States as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner of that contest barely achieved

50 mpg (21 km/l), and from these humble origins, a more organised competition evolved.

In 1985 in France, Shell Eco-marathon as we know it today was born. In April 2007, Shell Eco-marathon Americas event was launched in the United States, and in 2010, the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia was held in Malaysia. Malaysia hosted Shell Eco-Marathon Asia until 2013.

Since 2014, this street circuit challenge is being held in Manila, Philippines, which will continue to host the event until 2016. SWP

The De La Salle University Manila claims victory as it won the first place in the Gasoline – Prototype category.

Typhoon Yolanda survivors express hope and optimism as they steadily recover from devastation with the relief and rehabilitation programmes implemented by companies like Shell. By Marah Villanueva

RISING FROM YOLANDA’S WRATH: SURVIVORS TELL TALES OF HOPE

hen Typhoon Yolanda hit Tacloban, thousands of

residents lost their homes and livelihood. Here are stories of victims who are steadily rising from the catastrophe with the help that Shell provided. Aling Lolita, 56, is a resident of Barangay 69, Anibong, Tacloban. She used to support her family of nine through dressmaking until Yolanda destroyed her livelihood. “Our home was completely washed away, everything was gone, but we were still thankful because at least we were all safe and alive,” she said. In the aftermath of Yolanda, Shell companies in the Philippines extended assistance to typhoon victims. Relief goods were distributed in November and December in 2013. Aling Lolita was one of the beneficiaries of Shell’s relief and rehabilitation efforts.

“We received rice, coffee and spaghetti, which we ate during our Noche Buena and Media Noche. We’re very thankful to Shell for their help, for giving us goods and supplies. Of course, we were very happy to know that there are many companies like Shell that help Yolanda victims,” Aling Lolita shared.

Another beneficiary is Aling Remedios dela Cruz, 68, a salt farmer from Barangay 70 with a family of five. “Shell gave us canned goods, rice, and even clothes which really helped us in our daily living after Yolanda struck.”

At present, Aling Lolita, Aling Remedios and the rest of the residents from Anibong are gradually recovering from the devastation brought by typhoon Yolanda. “With my small

capital, I’m selling lumpia and other delicacies,” said Aling Lolita.

Likewise, Mang Kandido Moratal, 70, also a resident of Barangay 69, already managed to recover. “I have already repaired our house. When the typhoon swooped down our community, the roof of our house flew with the raging winds. Now, we’re living a normal life again in our newly repaired house,” said Mang Kandido.

More than a year after Typhoon Yolanda ravaged Central Philippines, Shell continues to extend help to Yolanda survivors by implementing a sustained rehabilitation programme. A total of 1,100 solar lamps were distributed to families in the barangays, and 22 of 63 boats were already

distributed to fishermen who lost their means of livelihood. “The solar lamps will be very helpful in lighting our homes since we still do not have electricity,” said 28-year old Renato Likit, a resident of Barangay 70. Renato is a security guard in one of the establishments at their barangay. He lives with his wife and his daughter. Aside from the solar lamps he received, Renato is also a beneficiary of Shell’s work-for-cash programme.

“I thank Shell for helping our barangay. The solar lamps that they gave will be of great help most especially in the evening,” said Aling Hanah Jacson, 46, a mother with a family of six.

Aside from its relief distribution, work-for-cash programme, and distribution of boats and solar lamps, Shell will also provide support to the city and barangay relocation programmes for those living in the “no build” zone, through the Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc., the social development arm of Shell in the Philippines. Close to 200,000 beneficiaries benefit from various livelihood and disaster training programmes as well as from educational and disaster facilities built by Shell, which help in making lives better for Taclobanons. LEAVING A VALUABLE PAMANA IN PANDACANby Allan Gamo, Dang Red, and Margaux Diaz

herever Shell goes, Shell touches the lives

of people in communities surrounding its worksites through its numerous social development programmes that address both immediate and long-term needs of its stakeholders.

In Pandacan, Shell companies in the Philippines and its social development arm, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), identified that health is one of the most pressing concerns of its residents. Although health formed part of the regular social development programme for Pandacan, it was not until 2004 when a more organised and holistic approach to promote the health of Pandacan residents was formed.

PAMANA SA PANDACANIn 2004, through one of the

regular Ugnayan sa Barangay Meetings of PSFI and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) with Pandacan leaders and residents, the “Programang Pangkalusugan ng Mamamayang Nagkakaisa sa Pandacan” (PAMANA) was formed.

Since then, more than 4,000 residents have benefitted from programmes that range from medical and dental missions, TB DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course), skills training and upgrading programmes for Barangay Health Volunteers, Supplemental Feeding Programme benefiting school-aged children, and awareness raising campaigns on wellness, dengue, cancer, responsible parenthood, renal health, and fire safety, among others. Other health promotion activities like good grooming,

proper hand hygiene, and PhilHealth orientation seminars were also organised under PAMANA. With assistance from PAMANA, Botika ng Barangay (BnB) outlets located in Barangay 834 was set up in 2009. BnB made essential medicines accessible to Pandacan residents at a low price.

PAMANA incumbent Secretary Roselle Roxas, who serves also as the Supervisor for the BnB located in Barangay 834, said, “PAMANA linked the community to the government’s programme for improved access to health information and services.” For Roxas, residents derive the most benefit from affordable or free medical services which can be costly.

Barangay 834 resident Nora de Jesus said, “My family

and I greatly benefited from PAMANA-led activities, most especially from the health orientation seminars and dental missions”.

For PAMANA Member and Barangay Health Volunteer Maryann Soriano, the most important contribution of PAMANA is in equipping her with the skills to become an effective health worker. Through PAMANA, Soriano participated in trainings on providing first aid and life-saving procedures. “Having credible technical resource persons as speakers interest many of us volunteers in attending skills upgrading trainings that, in turn, make us more credible health providers.”

Through the years, PAMANA activities have reached out to residents of Barangays 829, 830, 832, 833, 834, 838, and 839. PAMANA boasts of a robust network of partners that include the City of Manila Health Department, Department of Social Welfare and Development, PhilHealth, UNICEF, Philippine National Red Cross, Paibare Legacy, Inc., SC Johnson, Kalookan

City Dental Society, Reyes International School of Cosmetology, and the Bureau of Fire Protection, among others.

A TIME TO LET GOIn 2008, PAMANA was registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit organisation. This means that PAMANA has its own set of by-laws, operating principles, and financial system. Between 2008 and 2014, PAMANA has been primed to operate independently of PSPC and PSFI. PAMANA officers and members now have the skills in managing the organisation and in planning, implementing, and monitoring its activities.

“In the past two years, PAMANA has significantly stepped up its activities,” recounts PSFI Programme Manager Allan Gamo. “From only one or two activities in previous years, PAMANA activities are held almost monthly at present, and thus have become a

regular community event engaging both the partners and Pandacan residents simultaneously.”

By 2015, PSFI will no longer be involved in the operational management of PAMANA, and, the programme will be completely handed over to the community.

PAMANA President Catherine Gabriel says, “Through PAMANA, Pandacan residents now have better access to health information and services. Given the roster of partnerships we’ve forged through the years, there is no reason why the PAMANA Council should not be able to carry on with all the health activities that have been started.” PAMANA targets to conduct at least four services yearly, including medical and dental missions, and good grooming activities. he Malampaya offshore gas platform located on

the West Philippine Sea may be a marvel of modern engineering, but none of the valuable natural gas makes its way to power plant customers without the men and women who work under potentially dangerous conditions to keep the platform operating.

One of these modern-day Filipino heroes is Albert Emas, Operations Team Leader of the Malampaya offshore platform. Albert is described by his teammates and friends as a dependable, smart team leader and team player whose easygoing, down-to-earth, hardworking and positive attitude instantly earned the respect and trust of his colleagues in Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX B.V.)—Shell companies in the Philippines’ (SciP) upstream

T company that operates the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project.

Albert is the first from SPEX to be honoured with a prestigious Shell Crystal Award and to join the roster of most outstanding performers across SciP.

WORKING ON THE MARVEL OF ALL ENGINEERING MARVELSAlbert Emas, Offshore Team Leader, is the first SPEX staff to win a Crystal Award. Albert’s life changed when he joined SPEX in 2006 as a Graduate Operations Engineer. He was fresh from college at that time and little did he know that his job in SPEX would unfold into an exciting career that would literally light the homes of his fellow Filipinos.

As part of Shell’s Graduate Operations Engineer

Programme, Albert was assigned on the Malampaya offshore gas platform just a few months after joining SPEX. “Being in awe of the opportunity is an understatement,” said Albert. “I was overwhelmed to be actually working on the marvel of all engineering marvels. I saw the platform as a hi-tech, futuristic creation of the best engineers and I was part of the team. Working here is truly an honour and a dream come true.”

Albert recalls his first few years working on the platform. “It was a little intimidating yet very inspiring. The best engineers were here, most of them with extensive experiences abroad from various oil and gas plants. And there I was, inexperienced and everything was new to me.”

SECRET TO SUCCESSAlbert’s persevering attitude landed him different roles offshore. He became the Relief Operations Team Leader (OTL) onshore before going back offshore as OTL for Team A and finally as OTL for Team B. As OTL, Albert manages all operations activities—from the issuing of permits, frontline supervision to ensuring the steady production of the platform.

When asked about the secret to his success, Albert said it’s simply never giving up. “No beginner becomes an expert right off the bat. From my experience, and I think this is true for everyone, listening to those more experienced than you is very important. You have to ask those questions and learn from your mistakes. Then, you have to show them that you’re not just in it for the ride—that you’re determined to continuously learn and improve, and make good contribution to the team.”

“MALAMPAYA WEEKENDS”There are a lot of challenges in living on the platform. Working for two weeks straight and having a time-off for also two weeks is something that can take time getting used to, especially during what the team on the platform call “Malampaya Weekends”.

“Malampaya Weekends” is an occurrence that usually happens on a Friday afternoon, wherein the platform would experience operational hiccups and the onshore team supposedly leaving for home to take their well-deserved rest for the weekend would stay behind at the office to work hand-in-hand with the offshore team that is also working overtime to fix the problem. “This and

a lot of other challenges are some sacrifices that require a good attitude and teamwork to resolve. The platform requires a whole team performing well together. Indeed, the success of Malampaya is never done by one person and that is why I share this award with everyone in SPEX.”

A HUSBAND, LEADER AND FRIENDAfter a two-week, usually very challenging work offshore, Albert makes sure he spends quality time with his family, and recharges by getting lots of rest and working out at the gym. “I watch a lot of movies with my wife and sometimes we travel—we explore new places and experience different cultures. I especially enjoy going to museums and I find it interesting to look at historical items especially if they hold significance in the current times.”

Albert has always been regarded as the ideal balance of smart and funny. He is fondly known for his sense of humor that is part of the usual causes of loud laughter and gaiety emanating from the Malampaya platform in the middle of the sea. “Albert is a very smart guy and he is very focused on his tasks and deliverables. He can deal with all people across the organisation. In fact he is known to have excellent rapport with colleagues from Shell and contractors alike,” said Rodolfo Zarate, Senior Electrical Power System Engineer at the Pearl GTL. “Albert jokes around most of the time but is very professional when it comes to work. He is a good listener and a good adviser,” said Tina Ramboyong, SPEX Contract Specialist.

A down-to-earth guy, achievements never got to his head; he has always strived for something greater with his team, and has remained a dependable colleague and true friend. He had huge responsibilities as the leader of operations in a highly complex engineering facility, but these never hindered his infectious positive energy that inspired and motivated his team, nor wavered his strong set of values and principles. “A genuinely God-fearing and principled leader, Albert takes the “walk the talk” phrase to a completely higher level,” observed Dingdong Altajeros, SPEX Reliability Engineer.

“He is supportive and understanding. He will not think twice to lend a helping hand. An excellent team player as he is an excellent team leader, he does not take sides and always balances the situation,” shared Mia Marabur, Malampaya OR&A Engineer.

A FEAT FOR ALLThe Shell Centennial Crystal Awards may be dubbed as a “Salute to Shell’s Top Performers”, but for Albert, it should be a salute to all in SPEX. “I got the award because of the team, not just offshore, but also the steadfast support we get from the onshore team. It’s really the whole SPEX team that won the award. To me, everyone in SPEX should be given a Crystal.” In his eight years in Shell, Albert has earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues across the organisation. He works smartly by balancing work and life. His principles, humility, hard work and great leadership in operations make him someone to watch for as he pursues greater heights in the future. SWP

BE WELL FOR A HEALTHIER SHELL: TAKING A STAND FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

s Shell companies in the Philippines forges ahead to another century

of remarkable leadership in the energy industry, it is also serious in strengthening its workforce to sustain their productivity through employee development programmes.

Shell believes that its people are its most valuable asset, and by providing them channels to develop, the whole organisation becomes more energised and inspired to become stronger and better.

One of Shell’s employee programmes that are making headway in shaping a productive workforce is the Be Well Programme, a holistic approach to improving employee health and wellness by focusing on nutrition, and encouraging staff to wean from smoking, engage in various physical activities, and practice other health routines and activities for a healthier workplace and a fitter lifestyle.

CREATING BALANCE In the past years, Shell employees revealed in the Shell People Survey (SPS), an annual survey which determines Shell employees’ employment satisfaction, that majority of the employees were not aware of the existing

A health programmes that promote work-life balance and there was a need to reinforce it.

When work-related concern and lifestyle health-related issues are combined, work efficiency may be affected hence, together with the Human Resources Department, Shell Health and Internal Communications, Shell Be Well rolled out a campaign that reinforces health and promotes the well-being of staff. Challenges were gradually overcome by introducing various activities that were tailored around the preferences and availability of employees to dedicate time to engage in health and wellness.

“Shell consistently looks after the welfare of its employees. To help them enjoy a balanced life, creating and supporting employee programmes such as Shell Be Well is a long-term Shell commitment to encourage employees to take charge of their personal health,” said Shell Philippines Country Health Advisor Dr. Rose Rivera.

LEADERS FOR HEALTHTo achieve productivity in the workplace, the workforce needs to be healthy. In every company, healthy employees contribute substantially to

operational efficiency and growth.

In the recent survey, the SPS revealed that majority of the workforce recognise the effort of Shell management in implementing

programmes that promote employee welfare. Shell is continuously providing resources for existing health clubs and supports voluntary formation of clubs as it is essential in securing the success of the Be Well Campaign. Over the years, occupational health-related programmes have been carefully evaluated and improved according to the lifestyle and behavioural changes of staff, which resulted in intensifying commitment among Shell employees to their personal health.

Members of the Country Coordinating Team (CCT) led the launch of the Big Be Well campaign at all Shell worksites nationwide to encourage more employees to participate in wellness activities for a healthier lifestyle. It is a multi-pronged approach to enabling change in lifestyle among over 4,000 staff in Shell companies in the Philippines. Shell senior leaders led by Country Chairman Edgar Chua spearheaded the launch and joined the employees in the activities. REINFORCING WELLNESSBacked by strong partnership among Shell leaders and all business units, the Be Well campaign successfully enabled employees to take charge of their health by joining various health and wellness activities held at Shell worksites such as Luzon and VisMin outports, Shell House, Pandacan, Tabangao, SBO-Manila, SPEX Alabang Office including the Onshore Gas Plant and Shallow Water Platform, and Cebu Regional Office.

Using the power of technology, over 4,000 Shell employees were informed about the

various wellness activities which included the launch of the Be Well Fair at all Shell worksites, team registration to the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC), and the launch of the new Shell Be Well Check website (www.BeWellCheck.com). The Be Well Fair featured senior Shell leaders doing physical activities to keep themselves healthy which encouraged employees to participate in the challenging yet fun Be Well clubs—not only promoting health but also teamwork and mental fitness. The fair promoted taking accountability and commitment for one’s own health by participating in the formation of various activities and Be Well Clubs.

To ensure that employees embrace a healthy lifestyle, the new Shell Be Well Check website was launched featuring wealth of information on achieving a sustainable healthy lifestyle as well as corporate tie-ups that offer special discounts and privileges that are exclusive to Shell employees which motivate them to make fitness an essential part of their lives.

WHAT SUCCESS MEANSMajority of the employees are now on their journey in sustaining a healthy lifestyle change. Adding flavour to Shell Be Well’s success are the recently bestowed Quill and Anvil Awards for effective employee engagement.

“At present, Shell employees are actively participating in the activities of Be Well Clubs which resulted in improvements on their health risks based on employees’ feedback and testimonials. Nonetheless, getting better results is a work in progress,” said Dr. Rivera.

The strong support of Shell management in providing essential resources to sustain activities of employee clubs boosted participation among employees. A significant move by senior Shell leaders was their active participation in the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC), a programme strategically designed to boost the physical activities of employees. Three GCC groups from the Philippines are composed of Shell management team members. Close to 1,500 employees from Shell companies in the Philippines grouped themselves into 214 teams and took the challenge of achieving more than 10,000 steps each day. GCC involves a 16-week pedometer-based challenge that requires participants to monitor and record the steps they make each day. Across the Shell Group, Be Well Philippines ranked #1 in terms of employee participation in health activities.

Through the Be Well programme, bewellcheck.com recorded that 97.1% of employees said that the activities helped them take more personal accountability for their own health, while the same percentage chose to increase their activity levels to become part of their lifestyle.

Beyond these statistics are real stories of transformation by Shell employees who have discovered the benefits of embracing a healthy lifestyle. As Shell intensifies its support for employee development, the Be Well Programme remains a viable channel in motivating employees to take more personal accountability for their own health and live a better, more balanced life.
