New Members:
Mr. & Mrs. Wilson
Thank You Members! We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to our
Hillendale family for making the One Warm Coat Drive a
SUCCESS! We filled the coat room…over 200 coats were
collected and delivered to Anna’s House, a local homeless
shelter. They were so excited to receive our delivery. We
would also like to extend a special thank you to the Junior
volunteers, parents and the HCC staff who supported our
efforts.

JANUARY THANK YOU’S!
We appreciate your business to the
following Hillendale members who
recently held a private event here at the Club.
I had an interesting discussion the other night and the timing was perfect for me to write my message for this
month. Using Hillendale Country Club has a far greater impact than you may realize. As President of the
PGA of America, I was involved with the We Are Golf Coalition and was part of developing the messages for
the importance of facilities around the country. Hillendale is one of 16,000 golf facilities around the country
and is a prime example of a small business that our country is paying a great deal of attention to. Averaging
47 employees nationally, there is no greater example of a small business.
Golf last year in our nation provided almost two million jobs and sixty billion dollars in waged income for
Americans. And that’s not just the Tigers and Phils, that is average people who take care of the course, the
servers, bartenders, bag room staff and more; everyday folks putting food on the table for their family.
In Maryland alone there are almost 200 facilities that provide roughly 15,000 jobs, with over four hundred
million dollars being paid in wage income and a total economic impact for our state of 1.3 billion dollars each
year.
Beyond that, the charitable arm is far greater than all other sports combined. Golf last year raised $3.9
BILLION dollars for charities and foundations in the US, with over 140,000 events being held. Our state was
responsible for over thirty million of that number. Here at Hillendale, we worked with Pathfinders for
Autism, American Cancer Society, Leukemia Foundation, March of Dimes and more.
So when you are making your plans for this year whether a meeting with 12 people, golf
outing for 100, banquet for 200, or prospective members – please keep Hillendale, your
club, in the front of your mind. Give me a call to see what we can schedule at
410-592-8011 ext 230. Besides being one of the best facilities in the country (and I have
been to quite a few in my travels!) it will have a greater impact than you may realize.

Dear Members,
I want to take a moment to thank you for providing me the opportunity to manage and improve your golf
course. My wife and I are thrilled to be able to remain here and raise our family in the Baltimore area, and the fact
that Hillendale is the perfect fit for me at this stage of my career is extremely exciting for us.
I have already met many of you and everyone has left a great impression on me. The membership seems so
energetic, excited, and supportive of the positive direction I plan on taking the course. It will take a lot of hard
work, patience, and an understanding that change is necessary and seldom immediate.
This year, my focus will be on two things- Growing grass and enhancing the details around the course. Until
the soil is nourished and the turf is healthy, I will be focusing on the fundamentals of plant health. After that, I’ll
be able to confidently begin pushing the limits of the course providing a higher caliber playing condition.
Another skill set I will bring to Hillendale is the ability to complete parts of the Phase II Master Plan utilizing
our current staff and equipment. At times we will be installing drainage lines, building or reshaping bunkers, and
planting or removing trees according to the plan. These changes will benefit Hillendale by improving the
playability of the course and will also save the club money that we can direct to other projects.
I look forward to working with our new Head Professional, Jason Johnson. Collectively, we have a fresh set of
ideas to make the Hillendale Golf Experience more enjoyable. We both understand that the club experience starts
from the minute your car pulls into the parking lot and continues until the time you pull out onto Blenheim Road,
not just the time between the first tee and the eighteenth green. We will work as a team to make sure as you leave
the club you will think to yourself, “Wow, when can I come back.”
If you would like to learn more about my work experience and some of my philosophies, I invite you to look at
my website: www.BradNovotny.com. Also, I have begun a weekly “Superintendent Update” on the Hillendale
website for you to see what we are doing out on the golf course. I will be including pictures and descriptions of the
work our staff is doing, and hopefully, for this season, it’ll help answer the frequently asked question- “So what do
you do in the Winter?” If you ever have any questions regarding course conditions or turf maintenance, please
don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected].
The most repeated word of the past month has been “Excited”. I am, Jason is, and
hopefully you are excited too. There are good days ahead for Hillendale Country Club and I am
pleased to be a part of the transformation.
Sincerely,
Brad Novotny Brad Novotny

Dear Members,
My name is Jason Johnson and I gladly accepted the position of Head Golf Professional at Hillendale Country
Club. Being that this is my first letter in the club newsletter, I wanted to give you a little background on myself.
My journey to Hillendale Country Club started in Mokena, Illinois where I was born and raised. My passion for
the game of golf and business ledme to Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona where I graduated with a
business degree and a Class “A” PGA Membership. Most recently, I come to you from my positions at the
Country Club of York in York, Pennsylvania and Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida.
Above all, I am thrilled to be part of such a wonderful club that is so rich in tradition. As your golf professional,
I will be committed to deliver services and programs that will meet your needs. With the golf season just around
the corner, the golf staff is enthusiastic to get started. We will have many new programs to offer regarding junior
golf, women’s golf, instructional programs, and much more! These programs will be in addition to the 2013
Golf Schedule that will be posted in the March newsletter.
I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and thank you for allowing me to be a part
of the Hillendale Country Club family.
