Program Name: CAMP TREETOPS

Description: Camp Treetops, sponsored by Shelby County Schools Coordinated School Health, is a Free Summer Camp for Middle School Students. The purpose of this therapeutic camp is to teach skills that will help students “bounce back” from difficult life circumstances. Students participating in Camp Treetops will learn to respond to conflict in non-violent ways and identify personal strengths and resources to help them become more resilient and successful in school. The camp leaders are licensed mental health professionals employed by SCS Mental Health Center. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included; transportation is not provided. Camp Treetops’ activities occur in an environment that is friendly and accepting. Each child is given unconditional positive regard and encouragement. The design of Camp Treetops is to provide a fun and enjoyable experience. Program instruction occurs mostly through activities that include teambuilding, games, arts and crafts, music, dance, drama, and sports/physical exercise.

Description: The camp will consist of one day of guided instruction, and four days of collaborative and independent project work to culminate with presentation and assessment. Students will engage with the Common Core aligned software in a guided tutorial designed to navigate the coordinate planes (x and y axis with positive and negative coordinates), apply decimal values, and change the value of a variable. In addition, students will learn a problem solving strategy to apply as they work on independent projects, including identifying the problem, looking for patterns or parts, breaking the problem down into smaller parts to solve one at a time, adjusting after guessing and checking, identifying multiple causes to a problem, asking for advice, and persevering.

Description: The ESL Intervention Program at Dexter Elementary is for students who are learning English as their second language. English Language Learners (ELLs) will increase English skills, language acquisition and content knowledge in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and understanding. Classes will provide comprehensible vocabulary and content development activities. This program is for Dexter Elementary and the surrounding area schools’ students .The parents of recommended students will be notified prior to registration.

Courses Offered: Students will spend half of their time using the Imagine Learning computer-based instructional program. This program will assist your child with listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar, and other literacy skills. Students will also participate in lessons delivered by an ESL teacher. The teacher will design and facilitate lessons that address the needs of students and the weekly/daily objectives. A variety of teaching strategies, such as Total Physical Response, Cooperative Learning, Language Experience Approach, modeling, etc. will be used by teachers that will address the age, grade, and English level of the students/class.

Description: The ESL Secondary Summer Enrichment Program is for new immigrant students (grades 6-11) who are learning English as their second language. ELL students who are in their first year in an English speaking school will have first priority. The program will run 20 days in June. All materials and resources will be provided by the ESL Program. Eligible students and their parents are notified by the home school.

Courses Offered: English Language Learners (ELL) will increase English skills, language acquisition and content knowledge in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and understanding, Classes will provide comprehensible vocabulary and content development activities. In addition to Language, Arts, a sheltered math and science curriculum will be implemented by highly qualified teachers for ELL students. Music (guitar, drums, and vocal) and library/computer skills round out the daily schedule.

Description: The ESL Intervention Program is for new immigrant students and other students who are learning English as their second language. The parents of eligible Students are notified by letter.

Description: Many of our SCS students and families regard summer as an ideal time for socially enriching experiences, such as time with family and trips to museums, parks, and libraries.

Unfortunately, many of our students face anything but idyllic summer months. When the school doors close, many students struggle to access educationally enriching opportunities. Also, some families struggle to provide basic needs, such as healthy meals and adequate adult supervision. Extended Learning Opportunities and Programs are well equipped to close this gap by providing families access to safe and supervised learning environments. Extended Learning Opportunities and Programs understand the value of also providing our students with a “mental” break from a rigorous academic curriculum and high stakes testing.

Extended Learning opportunities and programs strive to provide well-structured and supervised programs that foster high expectations for school age children. We will provide supportive, healthy, and safe learning environments that are instrumental to the facilitation of positive outcomes in academic achievement, student behavior, school attendance, and parental involvement, while also meeting the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional needs of students from our district of rich cultures and great diversity. Program Name: Summer Robotics Academy



Registration Dates: Registration is open to incoming 4th – 6th grade students. Students must attend or be attending Whitehaven Elementary or Havenview Middle for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

Description: The Summer robotics Academy is a summer camp for incoming 4th -6th grade students who attend Whitehaven Elementary School or will be attending Havenview Middle School. The camp will challenge students to design, build, and program robots through various learning platforms. Students will learn STEM concepts through innovative, hands-on experiments.

Program Name: Vison & Hearing Summer Camp

Program Dates: June 6-30, 2016


Registration Dates: Registration and need is determined by the IEP TEAM during the academic school year.

Description: The Vision/Hearing summer camp is a unique program that is designed to place emphasis on the ability rather than disability of blind and visually impaired and deaf or hard of hearing individuals. The summer camp is conducted during the month of June and brings together students with visual and hearing disabilities from various schools throughout the Shelby County Schools district. The camp allows students to take healthy risks in a safe and nurturing environment. The goal is for the students to discover undeveloped potential and increase self-confidence. Students who meet the criteria set forth by the State of Tennessee to be considered blind or visually impaired and deaf or hard of hearing may participate at no cost to the parents.

Program Dates: ACT Workshop will be offered May 31, 2016 (no class on May 30, 2016 – Memorial Day Holiday) through June 20, 2016 in preparation for the June 11, 2016 ACT test. Program Name: Wooddale High School Aviation Careers Education Academy

Program Dates: June 20 – 24, 2016 OR July 11 – 15, 2016


Registration Dates: Visit: www.obap.org Under the Project Aerospace tab you will see Youth Program - ACE Academy. Click that link. Now click the OBAP ACE Academy Locations 2016 link. Select the Memphis ACE Academy I or II. Click “register now” once you select the camp of your choice.

Description: Students will be exposed to the different careers available in the aviation industry. They will have the opportunity to tour FedEx, fly the flight simulators at FedEx, climb aboard a C-17 aircraft at the TN Air National Guard, tour the Huntsville Space Center, build and launch a model rocket, and pilot their own airplane! Students will travel to different locations each day. These and many more activities are tentatively planned for each camp this summer.

Courses Offered: For grades 8-12. Must have completed at least the 8th grade at the time of camp and meet the requirements of the application. Students must have good conduct and attendance. Shelby County Schools students only. Please note: Students can only attend one camp and may not repeat if they have already attended a previous year.
