“al-mabaadee” (“The Principles”) whose synonyms are belief, attitude, opinion and value is
the name of our New Group Newsletter. This name was chosen as it actually represents the true nature
of our Directors, Business Partners and Staff.
Over the past few months the team that was assigned the task of producing the first edition of the news-
letter met several times. They collected articles, scrutinized each of them before selecting a few that are
featured in this the first edition. The end result is a fairly simple newsletter that seems unassuming and
easy to compile but the actual fact is far from this. The task was immense, as the deadline approached
some of the team members had to burn midnight oil to try and get the graphics right. Nevertheless, the
job was interesting and many of us in the team had the good fortune to learn a lot during this exercise.
The ultimate intent of this newsletter is to act as a bridge between the different companies that form Al
Rawahy Holdings LLC. This is a common platform through which each company in the Group can share
information and success stories. The first issue is dedicated to our founder Sheikh Hamed Bin Salim Al
Rawahy.
We thank all those who contributed and request other staff members of any company within the Group
to feel free to send us your articles which if appropriate will be featured in future editions of the newslet-
ter. I hope this newsletter makes interesting reading and we do look forward to your suggestions and
feedback which can be sent to [email protected]

Message from the board of directors
Sh. Aah H.S. Al-Rawahy
Sh. Abdul Rahim H.S. Al-Rawahy
Sh. Is-haq H.S. Al-Rawahy
Our diverse business activities share a common vision and mission and it is my de-
sire that this newsletter serves to strengthen these values. rough this newsletter I
would like to urge all our sta to remain steadfast to al-mabaadee – e principles
which we observe in the Group, they are “Commitment, Ethics and Cooperation”. I
pray that Almighty Allah may continue to lead us on the correct path and help us to
remain determined to achieve our objectives.
To all our sta I have just one advice, do good at all times, this is what Almighty
Allah expects of all of us. e Holy Quran teaches us that,
“Whoever does righteousness – it is for his (own) soul; and whoever does ……….”
“Our Group comprises of twelve companies and eight thousand sta spread
over two continents. In addition we have several successful partnerships with
multinational companies who have worked with us for over four decades.
Connecting all these myriad entities to each other and spreading the 0avour of
the Group is always a challenge. is newsletter therefore is an eort to forge a
bond and build camaraderie within partners and sta across companies of the
Group. We wish the Newsletter team well in this endeavour and hope that ‘al
-mabaadee’ will grow from strength to strength.”
“As a Group we have people of varied talents and skills, these are left
latent until they are explored, tapped and properly channelised for the
bene4t of the Group. e Directors of ARH have recently formed sub-
committees or small teams who meet and share thoughts in an informal
setting. e Rawahy Information Group or “RIG” for short is one such
group which met and came up with the idea of a Group newsletter.
Today, we see that this idea has become a reality. Congratulations to
everyone for making this possible.”

Built on a strong foundation… (A profile of our founder Sh. Hamed Bin Salim Al Rawahy)
T he villages of Wadi Bani
Rawaha, Sumail, Nakhal and
Mslimat are all located very
close to the foot of the Hajar
Mountain Range. Wadi Bani
Rawaha and Sumail are on one
side on the route to Nizwa while
Nakhal and Mslimat lie on the
other side of the mountain ac-
cessible from Barka on the Bati-
nah route. All these villages are
somehow connected to our Group
for it is from this region that Sh.
Hamed Bin Salim Al Rawahy, our
founder and his family originate.
They owe their tribe name to Wadi
Bani Rawaha which is a wadi close
to the foot of the mountain. Wadi
Bani Rawaha and Sumail are plac-
es where one may find people from
an entire village with the surname
“Al Rawahy”, although people of
the Al Rawahy tribe are also found
in many other regions of the Sul-
tanate of Oman. The forefathers of
Sheikh Hamed migrated first to
Nakhal and then later settled down
in Mslimat on the other side of the
hill where they built a large man-
sion and lived there for many
years. The mansion at Mslimat is
still standing, it is an imposing
structure despite decades of being
left unoccupied. Most members of
the Al Rawahy family now reside in
or around Muscat.
Sheikh Hamed spent a considera-
ble part of his early life in Zanzi-
bar, where he and his brothers had
vast farm land and extensive coco-
nut, clove and spice gardens. They
managed factories that processed
the produce from the farm and
some of the fac-
tory products
were exported.
He travelled ex-
tensively be-
tween Oman, the
East African
Countries and
India to develop
business. Those
days travel was
tedious and
most of it had to
be done by sea.
This did not de-
ter Sh. Hamed
who had many
interesting tales
to share about his travels and ad-
venture. The story of how the Al
Rawahy family came to live in Zan-
zibar is also very interesting.
Sh. Salim Bin Mohammed Al
Rawahy the father
of our founder and
his immediate fam-
ily members were
renowned for their
Arabic writing
skills especially
calligraphy. Their
reputation went far
and wide even be-
yond the shores of
Oman. During this
period which was
in the late 19th
century, the Sultan of Zanzibar,
Sayyid Sir Barghash Bin Said Al-
Busaid was constructing his new
palace and he wanted to inscribe
verses from the Holy Quran at
prominent places in this palace. He
thus sent a personal invitation to
Sh. Salim and his brother Sh Ab-
dul Aziz asking them to visit Zanzi-
bar and help in this task, which
they accepted. They then moved to
Zanzibar with their families and
settled there but continued to keep
in touch with their hometown in
Oman with frequent visits. The pal-
ace built in 1883 is now a museum
and known as “Beit Al Ajaib or
House of Wonders”, the famous
calligraphic writing of Sh. Salim
and his brother adorns one of the
high doors of this palace museum.
Adventure is next to nature for
members of the Al Rawahy tribe
given the terrain and territory they
lived in, every male in the tribe is
considered a warrior. It is this ele-
ment of daring and adventure that
Sheikh Hamed displayed all his life
during the course of which he laid
the foundation for a truly great or-
ganisation. His sons continue to
build on Sheikh Hamed’s vision
and the organisation he started in
the early seventies is now spread
over three Countries and two Con-
tinents employing over 8000 peo-
ple.

The ascension of His Majesty Sul-
tan Qaboos to the throne in Oman
in the year 1970 was a turning
point in the life of Sheikh Hamed.
He felt the urge to return to his
homeland permanently and con-
tribute his mite in nation building.
Equipped with the values of hon-
esty, respect, integrity and fair-
ness Sheikh Hamed returned to
Oman, set up the first Company in
the Group, National Engineering
and Contracting Co or NECC
which is involved in Civil Con-
struction. Thereafter, with the
support of his sons, he was suc-
cessful in setting up all the other
companies that are listed within Al
Rawahy Holdings LLC. Sheikh
Hamed was considered a dignitary
Sheikh by the Palace protocol and
in the year 1981 when the first
State Consultative Council was
constituted, His Majesty the Sul-
tan appointed Sheikh Hamed as
one of its first members.
Sh. Hamed was an astute busi-
nessman who believed in selling
on the merit of the product or ser-
vice. He insisted that our custom-
ers should be presented with the
real facts, even if some of them
may be seen to be detrimental and
may lead to losing the order. He
was a strong believer that honesty
would surely be rewarded. The
achievements of the Group over
the past forty years goes on to
prove that Sheikh Hamed was
right. Currently, his sons carry on
with the same spirit and have con-
tinued to build on the foundation
laid by their industrious father.
Over the past four decades, the
Group has gained an impeccable
reputation which is the real testi-
mony of the values that Sheikh
Hamed inculcated in the Group.
Sheikh Hamed passed away on
the 27th of July, 2013 but his
presence is still felt in the corri-
dors of the company. The values
he stood for still govern the opera-
tion of the Group. His values of
Honesty, Respect and Fairness are
strong pillars that direct all the
actions. The Era of Sheikh Hamed
may have ended but his legacy
still continues to be the guiding
light of the Organisation.
Sheikh Hamed is succeeded by his
six sons, a daughter, grandchil-
dren and great grandchildren.
Three of his sons, Sheikh Aflah,
Sheikh Is-haq and Sheikh Abdul
Rahim are on the Board of Al
Rawahy Holdings, his youngest
son Sheikh Ma’an and grandson
Sheikh Hisham Aflah are Deputy
General Manager’s in the Bin Sal-
im Group, while yet another
grandson Sheikh Mohamed Aflah
is Asst. COO in OIG.
The Board of Directors, Manage-
ment and Staff salute their vision-
ary founder. We believe that our
organisation has been able to
withstand the test of time because
it has been ‘built on a strong foun-
dation’ laid by Sheikh Hamed Bin
Salim Al Rawahy. May his soul
rest in peace.

The Good Samaritans
H eavy rains lashed the UAE on the 9th of March, 2016, the
worst affected was the Jebel Ali area of Dubai. The inten-
sity of the downpour and wind at high speed took the inhabit-
ants of the UAE by surprise. Life was thrown off gear and people
were stuck in traffic and floods for hours on that day. This also
impacted our staff in ARD who had to rough it up by walking home
to Discovery Gardens, Jebel Ali from their work place at DIP. On the
way home the team decided to live the values of the Group by help-
ing people in need. In the picture the good Samaritans of ARD can

Bin Salim Enterprises encourages further education

English Classes for the Omani staff
The Directors and Management of the Bin Salim Group are committed to Omanisation as it is a national objec-
tive and duty. The company realised that if young Omani’s are to succeed and take up higher positions in the
company, their English language skills need to be enhanced.
Initially, Omani staff were sent to language institutes to learn
English but this method did not prove effective. In-house
English language classes for Omani employees were thereaf-
ter introduced and attendance to these classes was made
compulsory for those who needed language skills. In order to
motivate the team to attend classes, the management has
tied in the bonus scheme to performance at English classes.
Those who are regular to class, show commitment to self-
development go away with high bonuses and qualify for pro-
motion as and when they reach the level of proficiency.
Currently, the company runs three levels of English classes
and approximately 30 employees attend these classes.
BSE sponsors students for completing their
studies
Bin Salim Group has devised a scheme to develop in-
house talents and give them the opportunity to take up
higher positions in the company. Every year the company
sponsors two Omani employees for a graduate level degree
programme. The entire course fees and incidentals are
paid by the company. The following candidates are cur-
rently pursuing a degree level programme.

was attended by more than 50
enthusiastic people out of which
BSE Employees constituted
about 25 numbers. Sh. Is-haq Al
Rawahy, who was also present
for the entire meeting, was im-

format. He emphasised that we
should start a club and
capitalise on the momentum
provided by the demo meeting.

Abdullah Rashid Mohammed Al Zaabi
Abdullah started his career with OIG as a truck driver in 2001. He was
not satisfied with being just a driver and he managed to move step by step
up the ladder by proving to his superiors that he was capable of more. At
first he was promoted to Site Assistant and then to General Office Assis-
tant for a whole year. He then moved to the Administration Department at
Head Office in 2005. In 2014 he reached the position of PRO Manager and
is proud of his service after 15 years with the company .
Haitham Hamed Saif Al-Rawahi
Haitham joined the Hilti AMS team of BSE in the year 2007. He was lucky to
be mentored personally by his Manager, Fahim Al Rawahy who spotted the
latent talent Haitham possessed. He worked hard, learnt quickly and was
soon one of the top performers of the division. The desire to learn new things
and to grow in his job encouraged him to take more responsibilities and to
venture into areas which others felt wary off. Haitham was awarded the
Best Employee of Hilti Oman during the year 2015.
Kirit Patel
For those who have interacted with the National Engineering and Contract-

name is synonymous with NECC. He is a man with a never say ‘no’ atti-
tude, if there is something that others say cannot be done, pass it on to Kirit
and he will find a solution for you. A civil engineer by profession, Kirit has
worked with NECC for over three decades and counting. His amiable nature
and his ability to deal with people of varied temperament makes him a very
effective person in managing construction sites. We thank Kirit for his dedi-

craving for sweets without adding extra sugar.
Serve them in a bowl with a dab of real whipped
cream or buy a good blender and make fruit smooth-
ies.
• Drink water – you need to stay hydrated. Not only
is it good for your internal organs, it also keeps
your skin healthy and lessens acne.
