This spring, Sheffield Theatres presents a major season celebrating the work of David Hare, one of the most influential and prolific playwrights of post-war Britain.

Still Booking…

WelcomeIt’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since the Crucible Theatre re-opened its doors! What a year it has been – and the excitement continues…

Following our ambitious David Hare Season, Sheffield Theatres is proud to produce a thrilling series of plays by Albee, Brighouse, Beckett and Alexi Kaye Campbell. We’ve teamed up with Newcastle’s dynamic Northern Stage to present Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in March, and this classic American drama is followed by Hobson’s Choice, a brilliantly funny and moving Northern comedy on the Crucible stage. In the Studio, we mark 50 years since the first production of Beckett’s Happy Days with our own production, followed by one of the best plays of the last ten years, the Olivier Award-winning The Pride.

As we approach our 40th birthday we’re continuing to revel in the best of British theatre – I hope you will join us this season.

Daniel EvansArtistic Director

40th Birthday In autumn 2011, Sheffield Theatres will celebrate 40 years since the opening of the Crucible Theatre. As part of our birthday year, we will programme a host of special events in the theatre, in the city and beyond, celebrating the unique contribution that the theatre has made to the cultural landscape over the last forty years. Our work will be inspired by our vision for the future – a theatre that continues to inspire and entertain, that is at the forefront of the country’s arts scene and is firmly rooted in the heart of Sheffield.

If you would like to help support our work during the 40th birthday year, please email [email protected].

‘I swear, if you existed, I’d divorce you.’

George and Martha are magnificent sparring partners, cruel lovers and terrific company. They invite newcomers Nick and Honey to join them for late-night drinks. As the evening unfolds, a cocktail of lust, revelations and alcohol combine to make it a night that none of them will ever forget.

Set in the early 1960s, Edward Albee’s explosive play captures the mood of a society on the brink of massive change. Ferociously funny and emotionally raw, this is a compelling rollercoaster ride into the darkest depths of love and marriage.

Contains some strong language.

‘Oh you are going to talk to me today, this is going to be a happy day!’

Talkative housewife Winnie, and her husband Willie, spend their days together under the blazing sun. Winnie talks, prays and sings her way through life with nothing but a bell for waking and a bell for sleep.

‘Go back into your hole, Willie, you’ve exposed yourself long enough.’

Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Shameless, Jam and Jerusalem) stars as the irrepressible Winnie, in this extraordinary comedy about one woman’s determination to carry on against all odds.

A bold new production to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Samuel Beckett’s funniest play.

‘At present, I’m addressing a few remarks to the rebellious females of this house…’

Henry Horatio Hobson, widower, lives above his boot shop with his three increasingly independent daughters. When his eldest girl, Maggie, decides to set up a business to rival his own, stealing his best bootmaker in the process, Hobson’s life is set to change forever.

One of the most popular plays of the last century, Harold Brighouse’s brilliantly observed northern comedy is about growing up, moving on and getting out.

1958. Philip is married to Sylvia, but he’s in love with Oliver.

2008. A different love story is unfolding with a strangely familiar trio…

Alexi Kaye Campbell’s astonishing debut play, with its candid and heartbreaking exploration of what happens between men and women, exploded onto the stage in 2008. Passionate, heartfelt and gripping, The Pride is about loyalty, loss and having the courage to stand up for who you really are.

The stellar creative team that gave us last year’s smash-hit That Face return to the Studio with this Olivier Award-winning play.

Contains scenes of a sexual nature and strong language.

This production presented by permission of Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.

Robert, a commitment-phobic bachelor, is about to hit 35 and his friends think it’s time he settled down.

This brilliantly observed musical about love and marriage is sophisticated, fast-paced and funny. Packed with sensational songs, including Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch and Being Alive, Company will star Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Daniel Evans as Robert. Daniel has won widespread critical acclaim as an actor, particularly for his performances in Sondheim’s musicals (double Olivier Award-winner for Merrily We Roll Along and Sunday in The Park With George), and Sheffield audiences will remember Daniel playing Ariel in 2003’s hugely successful version of The Tempest at the Crucible Theatre.
