SHEETED SOMERSET Project
The above picture taken from an original painting captures the famous old breed
the Sheeted Somerset which became extinct during the 20th century.
Mr. Andrew Tanner is actively recreating the breed by utilising the same belted
breed of cattle that were imported to Somerset via the Netherlands many
centuries ago and crossing with appropriate beef cattle in order to produce the
native Sheeted Somerset in a beef variant.
This Dutch breed is the Dutch belted "Lakenvelder" and it just so happens that
KI-SAMEN's former export manager Reurt Boelema is an authority on the breed.
Reurt has not only been a breeder for most of his life but has written a book
which graphically details both the history of the breed up to the modern day.
The Sheeted Somerset project is now bearing fruit and the first calves are on the
BCMS breed code LVSP
The above picture taken from an original painting captures the famous old breed the 'Sheeted
Somerset' which became extinct during the 20th century through foot & mouth outbreaks.
Mr. Andrew Tanner is actively re-creating the breed by utilising the same belted breed of cattle that
were imported into Somerset via the Netherlands many centuries ago and crossing with a selection
of beef cattle in order to produce the native Sheeted Somerset in a beef variant.
This Dutch breed is the Dutch Belted Lakenvelder and it just so happens that former K.I.SAMEN
export manager Reurt Boelema is an authority on the breed having been a breeder for most of his
life and written a detailed book on the breeds history up to present day.
The Sheeted Somerset Project set up by Andrew Tanner is now bearing fruits with calves on the
ground and second crop animals calving also. Up to now 6 bulls have been trialled from the A.I.
station of K.I.SAMEN which are displayed in this catalogue.
Cattle Genie have also supplied straws of Lakenvelder bulls that display dairy qualities and the first
milking daughters from these crosses are expected in milk spring 2020. The milk from the Dutch
Belted Lakenvelder is noted for its very small globule size making it highly suited to ice cream, coffee houses and cheese production.

TOON is a Black & White Lakenvelder bull for those farmers who are looking for
a Sheeted bull with a difference. As with all Sheeted Lakenvelder's the belt is
always dominant and will highlight calves from the breed every time.
TOON is a perfect choice for any grazing herd however his shorter gestation
length makes him ideal for the end of block service period.
Lovely temperament in the parlour and super udder health are features of
TOON not to mention his beautiful conformation.

Functional traits
Lakenvelder bull GOLAT is a superb dairy character bull that has excellent
locomotion and width.
From the Dam line we see some of the best bloodlines from the U.S.A. where
dairy herds of pedigree Lakenvelder tracing back many decades to the earliest
importation are found. And on the Sire side of Golat's pedigree we trace back
to the famous dairy character Dutch Belted bull Dennis Shirley.
GOLAT has sired many breeding bulls in the Netherlands as well has produced
many milking daughters that have excelled within herds. Light birth weights
and calving ease coupled with high fertility and good udder health make GOLAT
a good choice.
