MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Global Shea Alliance nearly doubled its membership in 2013. We now have more than 350 members from 25 countries including women’s groups, suppliers of shea butter products, international food and cosmetic brands, and non-profit organisations.

Demonstrating the power of collaboration, our members formed working groups in 2013 that have proposed guidelines and projects to improve quality and sustainability in our industry. It is an exciting year as we vote to establish these

initiatives that will set the course of GSA activities.

I’m honored to be a part of such a passionate and committed alliance. Together, we truly have the power to create positive change.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, our sponsors and contributors, and the Côte d’Ivoire organizing committee, allow me to welcome you to Abidjan and Shea 2014! We look forward to discussions with our guests and stakeholders and

welcoming new members to the GSA community.

USAID’s mission statement highlights two complementary and intrinsically linked goals: ending extreme

poverty and promoting the development of resilient, democratic societies that are able to realize their

potential. We fundamentally believe that ending extreme poverty requires enabling inclusive, sustainable

growth; promoting free, peaceful, and self-reliant societies with effective, legitimate governments; building

human capital and creating social safety nets that reach the poorest and most vulnerable.
