Why an Asbestos code?

• Asbestos accounts for more work related deaths than any other single cause in the UK. In particular for those involved in building or building maintenance trades.• Electricians; plumbers; heating engineers; or joiners

• Requirements of the ‘Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations’, 2012 .

• STFC buildings are of an age that asbestos was employed routinely in their construction.

Key points• Asbestos surveys required for all STFC

sites, re-surveyed and checked annually.• Site Asbestos Registers required for all

STFC sites detailing location and containment of asbestos – including experimental equipment.

• STFC, and HSE recommended, policy is not to remove asbestos unnecessarily as removing it can be more dangerous than leaving it in place and managing it in situ.

Key points

• All removal and disposal of asbestos must be managed by Asbestos Control Officer (ACO) using certified and licensed contractors.

• Management & staff to inform ACO & SHE Group where unlabelled/unmarked or loose/unsealed asbestos found or suspected.

• Those managing work on buildings, Building Work Controllers, must consult site asbestos register prior to undertaking work – informing staff & contractors of asbestos locations.
