SHE Code 31 “Controlled and

Hazardous Waste”

Page 4: SHE Code 31: Controlled and Hazardous Waste Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group

Why a Waste code?• Most if not all of the waste STFC generates is

‘Controlled’, examples include:• Waste paper; empty printer cartridges, fluorescent tubes, oils• Scrap metal; batteries; electronic equipment - PCs• Waste from building sites, waste food, plastic cups, cardboard• Scrap scientific equipment, cabling, monitors

• STFC has a ‘Duty of Care’ to ensure that the waste we generate and dispose of is:• stored and transported appropriately, safely and securely; • Transported, handled and disposed of by businesses that are

authorised or licensed to do so; and • recorded and documented using Controlled Waste Transfer Notes

(CWTNs) - retained for at least 3 years.

Why a Waste code?• Some ‘Controlled’ wastes are

also Hazardous to transport, due to their flammability, toxicity or because they are carcinogens, for example: oils or chemicals

• STFC’s ‘Duty of Care’ is the

same except disposal is recorded using Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes (HWCNs) and retained for at least 3 years.

Waste, other than non-recyclable office wastes, should be disposed of via routes detailed on SHE website.

Key points

Page 7: SHE Code 31: Controlled and Hazardous Waste Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group

Key points• Any waste stored on sites must be secure –

and MUST BE LABELLED.• Establishes Waste Disposal Officers (WDOs)

to manage and advise on waste disposal:• All waste must only be given to authorised carriers for

disposal at authorised sites; and• All waste disposal must be documented - generally either

a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note (HWCN) or Controlled Waste Transfer Note (CMTN)
