Welcome to Fashion Stylist Access All Areas!

I have written this eBook to give you a taste of the Fashion Styling World and give you my insights into some of the different types of fashion styling jobs I have carried out in my career. If you are wondering if a career as a Fashion Stylist is for you then I hope you find the information useful.

Firstly, I would like to start by telling you a little bit about my life before I was a ‘Stylist’.

I grew up in a lovely part of England called Ascot and then at 19 years old went to university in Southampton to be ‘normal’ like my parents wanted and get a degree.

I graduated with a 2:1 Law degree and worked in a law firm, soon to find out this was NOT the life for me and I was bored, miserable and un fulfilled.

I would quite literally tell you that the most exciting part of my day was deciding what to eat for lunch and what herbal tea I would try in the afternoon.

Soon enough I realised I could not do this forever and if I did I would lose myself and live with huge regret for not following my heart. I quit and the rest is history… Bye, bye boss!

Personal Styling is where you will be working one on one with your clients to ensure they have a wardrobe full of clothes that:

-Best reflect their personality and lifestyle -Are in the correct colours to work with their skin tone, hair and eye colours -Are in the correct styles that work with their body shape -Are within their financial budget

Personal Styling is THE MOST rewarding career ever and is super fulfilling by giving clients confidence by introducing them to new ways of dressing. Your role will have a huge impact on their lives and this gives such a great feeling of purpose. The Fashion Stylist

Fashion Styling is very different. The job itself is different, the times you work are different, the way you are paid is different!

A fashion stylist which is often referred to as a Wardrobe Stylist, is a consultant who selects the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. As a Fashion Stylist you will usually be part of a larger creative team, collaborating with brands, photographer/director, hair stylist and makeup artist to put together a particular look or theme for the specific project.

There are lots of different types of roles you will be taking on as a Fashion Stylist and here I will talk you through the main ones.

W i th Spencer we went to the s to re and they d id a l l t he f i t t i ngs and w i th Danny we d i scussed wh ich l ooks and co lou r s he wanted w i th the ta i l o r and then he went back fo r f i t t i ngs once the su i t was made .

Another example of a Celebrity Styling job was for Ian Wright who wanted a linen suit for when he was presenting the World Cup in Brazil. This again was a tailored bespoke suit made for him where we went to the tailor together and decided what would work best.

It is an absolute blessing when your clients outfit gets listed in a 'best dressed' list and when Spencer Matthews was listed in GQ's top 10 best dressed men at the BAFTAS it was great for my credibility as a stylist.

Advertising Campaigns

Another type of fashion styling is Advertising Campaigns. This is where you will be asked to get the clothes for the shoot. In this case you can buy them and then return them when the shoot is over or you can loan them. A really great shoot I worked on was a ‘Wear It Pink' Campaign for Breast Cancer Now with tv personality Lisa Riley. C: I be l ieve you s tar ted work at Greys Anatomy in season two, how d id th i s opportun i ty ar i se?

M : I had worked w i th the execu t ive p roducer Rob befo re on a Dav id E Ke l l y show ca l l ed G i r l s C lub years befo re and when a j ob a rose here he ca l l ed me . The res t i s h i s to ry .

C: When you jo ined d id you change any ex i s t ing characters s ty le f rom what the prev ious cos tumer had done?

M: The show was s t i l l new so I j u s t deve loped them fu r ther . I had fun exp lo r i ng the charac te r s and work ing on them w i th the shows c rea to r Shonda .

C: Had you watched the show before you s tar ted to work?

M: Yes I was a huge fan and th r i l l ed to j o i n the team

C: What were you working on before?

M: I had just finished a show called Commander In Chief and before that a show called American Dreams set in 1965. That was a hard show as we were dressing people in period clothes and matching with real clips from the TV show which was black and white.

C: How much freedom do you have when creating an image for cast members?

M: I work closely with Shonda to try to create what she wants in a character through their clothes to help build the characters style. Once we pick a character I work with my team of personal shoppers, seamstresses and costumers to help build or create the look I want.

C: Do you find yourself shopping for yourself out of work mode yet still finding things for a certain character?

M: It’s hard to get out of work mode as we work 10 months a year on the show so I’m constantly thinking about it.

C: What does a typical week involve?

C: How wou ld you descr ibe your own persona l s ty le?

C: What ’ s your dress to impress out f i t ?
