YAHRZEIT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM OUR RABBI AND RITUAL COMMITTEE

Rabbi Adler will be announcing the names of all loved one’s whose Yahrzeit (Jewish date of death) falls during the week to come. This will take place before the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer is recited each Friday evening and Sabbath morning. (Shabbat service times are listed to the left.) We encourage all family members who are commemorating a Yahrzeit to make an extra effort to attend Shabbat Ser-vices at least once either Friday night or Saturday morning to hear their loved one’s name recalled in our memorial prayer.

THE RABBI SPEAKS I am excited to announce three programs that I encourage you to share with me. Each unlocks different facets of the wonderful world of Jewish living and learning. All are without charge and open to all regardless of knowledge or background. They are in chronological order: Rabbi Adler’s Jewish film Institute Presents:

Tikkun Leyl Shavuot : 5 Values from Sinai Straight to You Erev Shavuot- Tuesday, June 3

rd at 7:45 pm

It is a time honored Jewish tradition to stay up late and study on the first night of Shavuot, the Festival of the Torah’s transmission to the world. Our class following evening services honoring our High School graduates and Kiddush will be based upon 5 important Jewish teachings that I hope will help transform your life. They are: Living in the Now, Defining Mira-cles, Stronger than Death, the Dangers of Projection, and Unconditional

Love. Let us start a new WJC tradition together. I will provide the caffeine and cheese cake (it’s a wonderful Shavuot tradition) you provide the thirst for knowledge.

Mazel Tov: We invite all graduating High School Seniors to join with us on Tuesday evening

THE CANTOR’S VOICE

5

On Shavuot, tradition tells us that Jewish Revelation occurred when G-d was revealed to the entire nation of Israel, men women, and chil-dren standing at the foot of Mount Sinai. In accepting the Mitzvot, the people of Israel were transformed from a wandering band to a people with laws governing its society. “Law and order” was established; so too, were some of our precious traditional synagogue melodies. Over 2,500 years ago, the Temple service in Jerusalem was graced by a musical service presented by a Levitical orchestra and choir. Each member of this group, it is said, had to receive five years of training be-fore being allowed to join this orchestra. When the Jews were driven out of Israel almost 2,000 years ago, most of this musical tradition was lost because The Levites refused to entertain their captors. We read their statements of refusal in Psalm 137, “How can we sing, the song of G-d on foreign soil (EICH NASHIR EETEE SHIR HASHEM AL ADMAT NEICHAR?).” Through our many centuries of exile, much of the music has been replaced by melodies and songs adapted from the countries where we lived. As a result, now that we have come together in the land of Israel, it is thrilling to encounter the range of musical styles that each group considers their “Mi-Sinai” tunes. During my many visits to Israel I have had the opportunity to attend services and experience the different music of Jews from different countries such as Yemenite, Iraqi, Persian, and other groups who have immigrated to Israel. The musical variations always inspire me and these musical tradi-tions go back all the way to Mount Sinai. As we approach the holiday of Shavuot, may G-d grant all Jews, each with their own particular view of Mount Sinai, to join together in one majestic voice to work for peace in Israel and through-out the entire world.

Chag Sameach Cantor Aaron Cohen

Dear Friends: I want to thank everyone of you who participated in the Gala that honored me on March 8, 2014. Your Journal Ads, well wishes and friendship were truly touching. It has been an honor to work with you, to represent you as President and, to serve on various committees for the past twenty-five years and, more importantly to be able to consider each and every one of you as my friend. May we all continue to move forward in strength as I look forward to working with all of you for the next twenty-five years! A Ziessen Pesach from my Family to yours!

FROM THE PRESIDENT About two months ago, our synagogue bookkeeper Silvia left me a form to fill out. It was a tax form from one of our banks. There was a question on it that I still think about. I don’t recall the exact phrase but the essence is as follows: “Can you please describe your organization?” I stared at the page not knowing what to say. Of course the obvious answer is that we are an egalitarian Conservative congregation who serve our community by providing education, sup-port, dedicated clergy and a house of worship for all daily needs and lifecycle events. Thinking more deeply into this, I realize we are so much more. We’re a network and a family. We’re a group of like-minded people trying to hold onto the traditions and rituals that our ancestors practiced. As a family we come together for one another in times of need and in times of joy. However, simcha’s and shiva minyans are not enough. We need to make the connection with G-d and our fellow congregants more than just a few times a year. Would you be able to stay close to a friend you only see but one or two days a year? I think the answer is obvious. I hope in my actions I can help unite our synagogue. I am encouraging everyone to attend a PJ Shabbat with your kids or grandkids. Come to a Sisterhood or Men’s Club program. Take a Shabbat morning off from your hectic life, turn off your cell phone, and spend the morning in prayer and reflection. You may come to enjoy the expe-rience, you'll never know this sense of peace and well-being if you do not even try. Please do. As we look back at the past month, I wish to extend a hearty mazel tov to Paul Chaskes and Benjamin Senzer recently honored by the WJC & the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs. Our gala was a huge success as over 340 came to honor our past president David Gaffner, as well as the 25th anniversary of the Woodbury Jewish Center. Thank you to the entire gala committee for a spectacular job; Debbie Daniels, Victor Hatami, Nancy Borg, Sharon Anesh, Mindy Smolevitz, Gayle Rotto, Michael Cohen, Sandy Schoenbart, and Elkie Rosen. A special thanks to Victor and Dolores Hatami and Great Neck Games for everything they did to make the evening run so beautifully. I can’t imagine where we would be without their constant, selfless support. Thank you to Drs. Alan and Michelle Multz for bringing in Rebbitzen Brocha Lipzsyc on March 30th for an interesting Sunday morning program. Thanks to Felice Linder for bringing in a wonderful program of meditation to help our busy WJC ladies learn to relax just before Pesach. The Sisterhood also donated clothes and food to the needy to help a kosher food pan-try. Our synagogue was booming with energy as we honored the new board at our Installation Shab-bat dinner on April 11th. Thank you to all who attended to make the evening such a huge success. Thanks to Elkie Rosen and Gayle Rotto for organizing the Yom Hashoah program on April 27th. It is always an emotional, yet important evening for all. As I write this, we are preparing for Passover. As we sweep the crumbs out of our cupboards, let us look forward to Spring and the beautiful holiday of Passover.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS As we are members of the NY Metro Region of Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, WJC participated in their Man and Youth of the Year Honoree Dinner that was held on Sunday April 6

th at the Crest Hollow Country Club. I want to give a shout out to our 2014

honorees, our very own, Paul Chaskes and Benjamin Senzer for their splendid achievements on behalf of the WJC. . Men’s Club held a successful wine sale prior to Passover, which went over very well. Thank you to those who participated. We also were pleased to provide the traditional breakfast for the Fast of the First Born on the morning prior to the first seder night. The Congregation also received their Men’s Club sponsored Yom Hashoah Yellow Can-dle that was lit on Sunday evening, April 27

th in observance of Holocaust Remembrance

Day memorializing the Six Million. We appreciate those of you who have made a contri-bution in support of this meaningful project. As for upcoming events: We have scheduled a golf outing at the Mill Pond Golf Course (in Medford) on July 21

st with Midway and Plainview

Jewish Centers Men’s Clubs. This will be an initial endeavor to expand our local community in a meaningful way. Additionally, save Saturday night July 12

th, when we hold our second summer barbeque with dancing under the stars

at the home of Adrianne and Eric Roth. If you attended last summer, you know what a warm, friendly event that was. We thank the Roths for opening their home once again. Ask your friends who attended to describe what an amazing night it was with friends, never ending food, open bar and a live DJ. Please check the synagogue’s future green sheets and emails for further information on these and other upcoming

events, as we look forward to your continued support.

Enjoy the Spring (finally),

SENIOR’S GROUP-SAGE Due to the Passover holidays, there was no SAGE meeting in April. However, I am very excited about our upcoming meeting on May 8, 2014. At that time, the president and founder of Heroes to Heroes, Judy Isaacson Schaffer, will talk to us about the work this amazing organization does with American soldiers who have returned from serving their country in active combat. The soldiers whom Heroes to Heroes helps are suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and are at risk of committing suicide. The program begins with a 10 day journey to Israel that develops social and emotional bonds between our veterans and their Israeli counterparts, and then continues to follow the American soldiers for one year, providing them with peer support and spiritual healing. I look forward to seeing you then. Our next two meetings will be held on: Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:30 AM in the Kiddush Room Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 10:30 AM in the Kiddush Room I hope you had a wonderful Pesach, and that with the winter behind us, we will enjoy the beautiful weather of spring together!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS May is a great month for special celebrations. It is a time when selected grades seize the opportunity to show the product of many months of seri-ous study and hard work. May is a time when parents and grandparents attend school programs and feel exceptional pride in their children’s achievements. It is also a time when parents realize that our school and synagogue offer an outstanding program of Jewish education and Jewish living. Join us at the following events and pause to appreciate the effort and dedication invested by our school staff and clergy in molding our chil-dren into proud and knowledgeable Jews. Attend Friday evening services on May 2, Gimel Shabbat. Our fifth graders will help lead the Shabbat adult service in the sanctuary. They will chant many of the Hebrew prayers, lead English prayers responsively, offer explanations of the liturgy and present a creative Dvar Torah. A festive Oneg will follow in the Kiddush Room in honor of our Gimel students. Excitement will be at a feverish pitch on Sunday, May 4, when our third graders participate in Alef Conse-cration. Beginning at 9 AM in the Sanctuary, our Alef students will offer a cantata reflecting on their stud-ies this year. Each student will then receive their own Sim Shalom siddur, which they will use during the next four years as their prayer text. A gala party will follow in honor of our Alef students. All students will celebrate Israel’s 66th birthday on Wednesday, May 7. At a special assembly, children will sing songs commemorating Yom HaAtzmaut and hear about the birth of the modern state of Israel in 1948. A taste of Israeli foods will be enjoyed by all. Here come the students from Bet. On Saturday morning, May 10, our fourth graders will take over leading the Family Congregation service in the Chapel. During the Bet Shabbat service, our Bet students will chant many prayers in Hebrew and English, participate in the Torah service and explain the significance of the Torah reading. A special Kiddush will follow. A double header is scheduled for Shabbat morning, May 17. It’s Birthday Shabbat for all children born May – August. Birthday blessings, gifts and birthday cake are part of the celebration. This is for the K-2 students who will participate in the final Family Shabbat program for this school year and Alef – Daled stu-dents who will meet for services in the Chapel. Also, special for this Shabbat will be a Holiday Jeopardy Game held in the Chapel. Grade 3 – 6 students will compete for bragging rights with their knowledge of the Jewish festivals. Moms and Dads will join their children for a fun-filled morning of Lag B’Omer celebration on Sunday, May 18. We will enjoy sports competition, races, singing, and refreshments. This year, for the first time, parents will compete in an adult softball game. Oil your gloves and practice your batting swings. It’s going to be a great event. A future Tiger Woods may be spotted on Tuesday, May 20 at the Bethpage Miniature Golf Course, when a number of WJC students participate in the Annual Miniature Golf Tournament. This event is sponsored by our Parents Association for students who attended a minimum of 15 Sabbath services. Ice cream, cer-tificates and trophies will be part of the fun for the day.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Woodbury Jewish Center Nursery School offers so many opportuni-ties for a child to learn about “being Jewish”. Our staff is constantly being challenged by a unique opportunity and a sacred responsibility. Not only are we tuned into each child’s developmental needs (emotional, social, physical, intellectual and moral), but we must also create a Jewish environment in which our children are sensitized to our rich Jewish heritage. One of our major goals is to help our youngsters to feel, to live, and to love Judaism. By weaving Judaism into our everyday curriculum, we hopefully will foster and nurture the Jewish identity of our children. However, as educators we influence our children for only a few hours a week. For the most part, our children’s attitude and Jewish education comes from the home. Try to reinforce what your children learn in school. By bringing the Jewish experience into your home, Judaism will become a natural part of your child’s everyday life and create a bank of Jewish memories. The school year will end shortly. Therefore, this is the perfect time to say thank you to so many people who helped make this a wonderful year of learning and fun. We thank Rabbi Adler, Cantor Cohen and, Dr. Gerry Meisel for their involvement with the children and helping to build a foundation for Jewish commitment. A huge thank you and great appreciation to our staff of dedicated, creative, and loving teachers. You gave us a great year. Thanks go to Linda Altman, Silvia Padron and Arnie Aprea and his cus-todial crew for keeping us organized. And, of course, our love and gratitude to Cindy Common! A very special thank you to Monica Cohen, Jen Schaefer, and our Parents Association for their efforts, support and, for providing us with wonderful enrichment programs and special equipment for our school. Most of all, we thank our parents for trusting us and sharing their adorable and precious children with us. We wish all of our “kindergarteners” ,good luck as they move on to new and exciting experiences. Have a pleasant, relaxing and safe summer. We look forward to seeing you in September.

Shalom, Vivien Grossman

The organization sends care packages to Chayalim Bodedim (soldiers without family in Isra-el). I will be hosting a fund raising event on June 1st at the studio where I train. Heaven is with you daddy come and play.

Mommy loves me so much but I need you.

Now is our time it’s still early today.

I miss your smile daddy come home to stay.

My hands are clean my heart is new.

Heaven is with you daddy come and play.

I know you can do it and find a way

to see me here in playlight’s golden hue.

Now is our time it’s still early today.

We can be together like Yesterday.

Hours of daylight are a precious few.

Heaven is with you daddy come and play.

Please rush home to me daddy don’t delay.

We are a first love and one that is true.

Now is our time it’s still early today.

You’re always my hero hug me I pray.

Youth News: Pre-Kadima, Kadima & USY In April PreKadima and Kadima came together for our annual “Chocolate Se-der”. Four cups of chocolate milk were had, questions were asked and answered and the plagues were recited – with a twist that includes: thirst, cavities, indigestion, cough, and more. This was a great way to get ready for Pesach! Post Passover there’s no better way to get back into the world of carbohydrates than with some “Breakfast for Dinner,” as we mixed and flipped some homemade pancakes and enjoyed a bit of morning delight for dinner. While PreKadima and Kadima were busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen, the WJC Teen Service Corp. volunteered to help out the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI,) at Huntington JC on Tuesday, March 25th. Through-out the winter months Huntington JC participated in the HIHI and provides shelter, food and toiletries to men who are not able to make ends meet. In an effort to lend a helping hand we made and packed lunches and set up the bedding for the men for when they arrived the following day. This was such an amazing experience that we are excited about partnering with HJC next year. Stay tuned for the final WJC Teen Service Corp. program in May! Interested in helping us plan for 2014-2015?? Email [email protected] today!! As we wrap up the year at the WJC Youth Department we realize that the last day of school is right around the corner, family trips are being finalized and summer vacations are so close. With only a few weeks left to the 2013-2014 year at the WJC Youth Dept., the year wouldn’t be complete without some great programs and of course a trip to wrap up the year…. Look out for the final PreKadima, Kadima and WJC Teen Service Corp (USY) May calendars – including a final trip AND end of the year party in May!!! Have a child/ teen who is going into 6th – 12th grade and have a few days to spare in August?? Send them to the METNY Kadima & USY Encampment from August 18th – 26th! This is an amazing 8-night; 9-day program at the end of the summer located at Camp Ramah Berkshires and is open to all incoming 6-12th graders. That’s right – if you’re not sure if USY or Kadima is right for your kids this is the program they need to get them hooked! Don’t waste any time- register your children for METNY Encampment today by visiting http://www.metnyusy.org/encampment1.html. Don’t forget – there’s no time better than the present to plan for next year! Have a child who is going into 3rd – 7th grade next year? Register them for the WJC Youth Department for 2014-2015 – request your membership form by emailing [email protected]. Have a teen who is going into 8th – 12th grade next year? Register them for the WJC Teen Service Corp!!! Interested in WJC Youth Dept programming??? Contact [email protected] to be added to our email list! Children in 3rd – 12th grade are welcome to join us for our programming @ WJC!!

In case of an Emergency………. Your rabbi wishes to guide and be of assis-tance to you in your time of need. In cases of serious illness or the death of a loved one: Please call Rabbi Adler at 496-9100 X 125 or at home, 509-9481 Please note that you must call the Rabbi before finalizing funeral arrangements. On Shabbat or Yom Tov, Rabbi Adler does not use the telephone. Therefore, you can convey information to him on these days at the synagogue during service times, by calling immediately after Shabbat or Yom Tov, or by going to his home.

The question has been asked “Can the rab-bi and/or cantor charge me for performing a funeral for my parent or sibling?” The answer is “Yes” they can. Neither the Rabbi nor the Cantor will charge for perform-ing the Funeral of a member or a member’s child. In this case a donation to the Discretion-ary Fund may be appropriate. However the term “member” does not include parents or sibling. Thus either is permitted to charge a fee for officiating at or participating in a funeral. While local Funeral homes, includ-ing Gutterman’s of Woodbury will include or tell you at the time you make arrangements of the clergy charge, please feel free to discuss it with either Rabbi Adler or Cantor Cohen at the time you make the arrangements with them.

Are you separated or going through a divorce? Would you like to speak to others who really understand what you are experi-

encing?

“I’ve never felt so alone in my life, that is until I went to the Separation/Divorce group at Sid Jacobson JCC,” said Carol.

Carol and her husband decided to end their long term marriage. Feeling lost, angry, and fearful, she felt she had nowhere to

turn. None of her friends were divorced and she knew she needed a place to speak confidentially to others who would under-

stand what she was going through. By joining the support group Carol was able to share her experiences comfortably, and to

have her feelings validated among peers.

Call to find out about our Separation/Divorce Support Groups. All groups are small, intimate, age and life-stage appropriate,

running in eight session cycles. Groups are facilitated by caring, experienced, professional social workers at Sid Jacobson JCC in

East Hills.
