In Memoriam

Smt Sundarbai &Shri Shankarlal Srisrimal

Shri Shankarlal Srisrimal shifted to Chennai, from Maharashtra, in 1935. Originally belonging to Rajasthan, he started his business here and was soon occupied in a number of social and community activities. One such activity was to take care of the students residing at the boarding home which was built on the site of the existing college campus.

In 2003, Sri S S Jain Educational Society mooted an idea to build a college on this property. The Shasun Family came forward and contributed for the fulfillment of their parents dream - building an educational edifice for young women. Hence, the college was born and named after them in the year 2005 - Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women.

The Namokar Mantra is chanted in Prakrit - the language in which it was composed many centuries ago. It consists of just five lines of

text and two appended lines:

Welcome

It gives me immense pleasure in welcoming you to Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women.

We started in 2004 with a vision to create an educational edifice for young women, where quality education and women empowerment would be of paramount importance. Hence, we embarked on a journey to create an institution which would bring pride to the founders, the stakeholders and the most chiefly - its students.

We are an eight years-young college, ranked consistently among the best in the city. It is our goal now to become a leader in women’s education. Moving ahead in this pursuit, we are on the threshold of yet another exciting journey - launch of a four year liberal education program in the academic year 2014 - 15.

Principal’s Message

Shasun College began after understanding the need for providing quality education to girls in the fields of Arts, Commerce and Science. It has grown leaps and bounds with two substantial achievements in the last academic year:

• NAAC accredited with ‘A’ grade. NAAC is the only autonomous body in the country which assesses the quality of the Institution. Though it is voluntary in nature the college has undergone the process showing that here quality is of prime importance.

• ISO 9001 : 2008 certification whereby the processes here are well defined and stands as a proof that the college believes in continuous improvement.

Shasun College is relentlessly striving in the pursuance of academic excellence and encourages the students to participate spontaneously in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The conducive ambience fosters creativity, confidence, liberalization and leadership qualities among the students for the development of versatile personality.

Why Shasun College?Infrastructure

Built on 2.5 acres of land, Shasun College is located at T Nagar, the college block measures approximately 50,000 Sq Ft and an additional 20,000 Sq Ft dedicated space for the VISCOM Labs.

NAAC Accreditation

Shasun College has been accredited as ‘A’ grade Institution by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The assessment by NAAC takes a holistic view of all the inputs, processes and results of the institution.

At the School of Commerce, we combine Academic Excellence and Superior Student Support to give the best commerce and allied education. Henceforth, this reflects in our yearly results where our students secured top 6 ranks out of 10 at the university in the academic year 2009 - 12.

Career Opportunities:

Unique Experiences:Presentation Day - Every Friday, students will have a Formal-Presentation Day. On this day, the students will be given a topic from their subject / current affairs and they’ll have to prepare and present their paper to their classmates and teachers. This can be a group / individual event. All students will need to be dressed in the formals, prescribed by the college, for this day.

Self Learning - We encourage students to break the shackles of life and be outward. They should not just learn in the classroom but also through exploring the world.

Threshold is an Annual Inter-college Management Fest organized by School of Management, Shasun College. The students of the school need to plan, organize and conduct various competitions under this event and make it a success, year after year. The event include competitions like ‘Best Manager, Business Plan, What an Idea’ et al.

School of Media and Communication

Shasun College’s School of Media and Communication is arguably Chennai’s most advanced institute, in terms of technology and equipments. The school currently runs a 3-Year Undergraduate Program based on Art and Visual Communications, in line with the curriculum prescribed by University of Madras.

The course is multi-dimensional and trains the student in Animation, Photography, Film Making, Film Editing, Drawing, Graphic Designing, Print Technologies and Media Studies. As diversified as it could be, at the end of the course, the students have an opportunity to create a career in any of these subjects.

Career Opportunities:As a Graduate in B Sc - Visual Communication, a student is expected to choose the field as per their liking and make a career in it. The fields being very diversified and vast, we assist our students in selecting the right path for them. Our students, in past, have been placed with Animation Studios, Film Production Companies, News Channels and Media Agencies

Unique Experiences:Learning in the field of Media and Communication is more through practical works than theoretical classes. At School of Media and Communication, we publish our students’ work on online platforms and help them to learn and meet the global standards of their field.

Field Trips - The students of 2nd Year are taken for 7 - 10 Days photography trips to various parts of the country. Apart from this, the students can also be a part of the expedition trips of the clubs and associations with which the institute is a member:

Science is just that: about research and in-depth knowledge in a particular subject. At School of Science and Computers, we encourage students to excel in the subject they choose through research. School of Liberal Education

Shasun Jain College, in response to the relevance and meaning of education of tomorrow, has designed an undergraduate program for women. This program takes into account the unique roles of women in social systems and settings as well as the emerging roles into the new sectors of growth in the country.

This education primarily shifts the existing focus on exclusive and silo streams of knowledge to the reality of continuity of knowledge and wisdom existing across millenniums. As such, this education emphasizes and focuses on the multiple roles and membership in various systems in which women are a part of. The SLE gives immense significance in preparing the young women to unfold their talents and at the same time preparing them to take care of both social and professional roles.

India UnboundIndia Unbound is the program which enlightens the student about the country, beyond the knowledge that they garner on a day-to-day basis. This unique program is designed to enable students to learn about the heritage and the culture of the country. It is meant to inculcate the principles of research methodology in the students and empower them to look at and analyze their own history and heritage scientifically.

Each project would be expected to contain deliverables in text and audiovisual form which would contribute to the SLE's research archives.

Social ConnectSocial Connect Activities provide a framework to the students to understand the importance of Social Work and NGO’s in our society. It also focuses on pressing issues in the country and the entire world which a student needs to understand for his/her holistic development.

The courses focuse mainly on NGO’s. Students learn the concept of why the Social Work is important, History of Social Work, Benefits of a Social Organization and How did it evolve? How can people get involved and Funding - Generation of Funds, Staffing etc.

Exploration in Life Space, Life Roles & Identity (ELRI)ELRI lab facilitates to explore the individual’s life experiences from childhood to adolescence to the present and discover that there are multiple meanings to the experiences at each stage.

The aim is to discover freedom from the bondage of past experiences and to find their relevance and relate to the world. As such, the ELRI focuses on societal values and the family socialization.

Clubs and Associations:

Enactus

Enactus, previously known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), is an international, not-for-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education. The main aim of the organization is to mobilize students to make a difference in their communities, while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN)

NEN provides critical support to start-ups and early-stage entrepreneurs through high-impact entrepreneurship education; access to mentors and experts; fast-track access to incubation and funding; and learning tools and materials.

ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT)

ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, an Initiative of Govt of India, Govt of Tamil Nadu and CII, is a not-for-profit autonomous organization focusing to improve the quality of students passing out of institutions in Tamil Nadu. The vision is to make them industry ready and immediately employable.

Toastmasters International

Want to develop speaking and leadership skills? Want to ace a job interview? Want to ignite your career? - Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. The members improve their speaking and leadership skills by evaluating one another’s presentations in a no-pressure atmosphere.

Community Initiatives:Owned and Operated by the Jain Society, community service is paramount for us. We conduct free of cost Look ‘n’ Learn classes for school students every sunday. More than 300 students have already been trained under this initiative and look to grow the number in coming years. Our other initiatives include Blood Donation Camps, Smoke Free Day, Health Check-Up Camps among others. We also look to adopt a village nearby in the upcoming academic year.

National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji's Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service.

Leo Club

The Leo Club’s objective is to provide the youth of the world (with) an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.

Rotaract Club

Originally Rotary International Youth Program began in 1968, their purpose is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance their knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.

Shasun Knowledge Centre - Discover KnowledgeShasun Knowledge Centre (SKC), which was established in 2009, is intended to promote the research interests and academic performance of the teachers. It conducts guest lectures to widen their imagination in different areas, and encourages them to write papers for seminars and publications in Journals.

A Half-Yearly Journal “Knowledge Economy” with registration under the RNI and ISSN has been brought out regularly since March 2011. The centre organizes Orientation Programmes for Young Teachers at the beginning of each academic year and conducts workshops / seminars on themes common to all teachers.

Shasun Shakthi Cell - Discover SkillsShasun Shakthi Cell is our centre for Extra-Curricular Activities and Developments. The cell offers and conducts 14 Add-On, 14 Liberal Arts Courses apart from 15 Sport Activities. The students need to select one of each department which helps them in excelling in different fields. Some of these courses are affiliated with IGNOU. Students opting courses by IGNOU can appear for exams separately for the certification.

Shri Shankaral Sundarbai Shasun Jain College For Women, built-up on 2.5 acres of land, is situated at the most buzzing location of the town – Theagaraya Nagar, famously known as T-Nagar. The built-up space of the college block measures approximately 50,000 Sq Ft and an additional 20,000 Sq Ft dedicated space for the VISCOM Labs. All together, the institute has a seating capacity for more than 3,500 students and 150 Staff Members. The entire campus is connected through Wi-Fi.

A new block is being built in the campus to offer Undergraduate Liberal Education Program. Once completed, this block will measure close to 100,000 Sq Ft, taking overall capacity beyond 5,000 students and 300 Staff Members.

Location:

Located in T Nagar, the most popular and opulent locality of the city, the college is at a stone-throw-away distance from some of the hottest shopping destinations of the town. Being centre of the town, it’s also very well connected to the rest of the city.

All roads connect to T Nagar. The various major roads to reach Shasun College that a commuter can take Burkit Road, North and South Usman Road, Madley Road, Anna Salai, Boag Road and CIT Nagar Road.

Mambalam Railway Station is just 5 Mins walk from the college.

The Upcoming Metro Rail will have as many as 5 Stations within 10 Mins walk from the college – Saidapet, Chamiers Road, Teynampet, Gemini and KK Nagar

Shasun College is the perfect place to pursue your sporting passion and combining it with studies. Our sports team includes Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Table Tennis and Football. Sports Scholarship – The College offers scholarships to help athletes who are competing at national and international level to meet the extra costs of elite participation. The scholarship is provided to an extent of complete tuition fee waiver and, in some cases, personal coaching services for the student.

The College Library is well-stocked, computerized & fully air- conditioned with more than 11,000 Books, Journals, and Magazines. We also have an audio and video library, along with reading facilities for students and faculty.

Visit the college

All prospective students are welcome to visit the college during the admission months which starts from mid April to mid June. On the other days, students are requested to pre-register to meet a counselor.

How to apply

Applicants are encouraged to use our paperless application system (www.shasun.edu.in/admissions/apply-online.php). Students who are not able to apply online, shall walk-in to the college and apply in person.

AlumniSince 2009, Shasun College has built a network of over 3,000 alumni, spread across the nation.
